Many people, especially in the time before the internet, depended on the radio to hear new music, or any music for that matter, for the most part. For me, growing up on military bases, specifically in Germany most of my childhood, radio wasn't an option unless I wanted to hear Top 40. Once I heard Hip Hop, and my vow to "find everything that sounds like this", I heavily relied on trading and dubbing tapes with fellow music lovers and enthusiasts, and the most prized possessions of the 80s...tapes of New York Radio. There's a list of amazing, impacting, pioneering, and influential shows/DJs that come to mind, such as; Mr. Magic, Marley, Zulu Beats with Afrika Islam, The World Famous Supreme Team Show, Kool DJ Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Awesome Two, Vandy C and Bill Blast, Awesome 2, and so on. This episode details those days, the passion and struggle to track down the latest tapes, and meeting all sorts of challenges along the way. And, eventually focuses on the radio station tapes that I most often got my hands on; WBLS and 98.7 Kiss FM, two rival New York stations. I also touch on a few other key radio shows that I was able to get tapes of or hear live, in the 80s, including Lady B and Mimi Brown in Philly, Electrifying Mojo, The Wizard a.k.a Jeff Mills, WKKC in Galesburg, and WNUR in Chicago. In Breaks in the Air: The Birth of Rap Radio in New York City (Duke UP, 2022), John Klaess tells the story of rap's emergence on New York City's airwaves by examining how artists and broadcasters adapted hip hop's performance culture to radio. Initially, artists and DJs brought their live practice to radio by buying time on low-bandwidth community stations and building new communities around their shows. Later, stations owned by New York's African American elite, such as WBLS, reluctantly began airing rap even as they pursued a sound rooted in respectability, urban sophistication, and polish. At the same time, large commercial stations like WRKS programmed rap once it became clear that the music attracted a demographic that was valuable to advertisers. Moving between intimate portraits of single radio shows and broader examinations of the legal, financial, cultural, and political forces that indelibly shaped the sound of rap radio, Klaess shows how early rap radio provides a lens through which to better understand the development of rap music as well as the intertwined histories of sounds, institutions, communities, and legal formations that converged in the post-Civil Rights era. John Klaess is an independent scholar based in Boston. John on Duke University Press. Both Murphy and Frank created their musical magic and pioneering sound not only for other artists but also for themselves, under the name, THE SYSTEM, with popular songs like, "Don't Disturb This Groove," and "You Are In My System." And do radio 'tastemakers' similar to Crocker still exist in today's digital music landscape? Join us for a first-ever public media conversation with '80s synth-pop duo, THE SYSTEM. Hook&Bass Radio Sessions
Classic Soul Mix by Dj Derick Spaulding

My earliest influential musical memories stem back to childhood where my parents would listen to WBLS every morning while getting ready for school. Being exposed to various forms of rhythm & blues, classic soul and early hip hop growing up, had a profound influence on my musical palette. Another huge impact on my musical perception was my father's record collection that spanned so many artist genres from James Brown, Hector Lavoe to Christopher Cross. I eventually  used his music and the records I “borrowed'' from my college radio station to spin my first basement fraternity party. They asked what name to put on the flyer and I said.. Dj Derick Spaulding because I had no cool Dj name; and it stuckThe strong, driving force behind deciding to buy my own set of 1200's was a desire to record mixes with the specific records I wanted to hear and in the order I wanted them played. Learning to spin and master mixes was not easy. My friends would throw objects at me if my mixes were off-beat...LOL... Looking back, this unique lesson taught me how to effectively hold a blend for extended periods of time, which would eventually form the base of my dj style; blends over scratches. All the musical influences growing up allowed me to be a chameleon of music genres. I learned to spin and eventually fuse odd elements of music together to develop my own Dj style. Blending hip-hop with fused rock loops, mixing reggae and salsa together, while seamlessly navigating numerous  levels of house music allowed me to grab gigs all around the city favoring whatever type of music the crowds wanted me to play. I made my name as a hip-hop dj, but could step in and flip house, reggae, rock, merengue, salsa, bachata like it was my specialty. I was known as the Dj that would flip records fast, playing mostly hooks to create that crazy crowd energy all night. It worked! My club experience and collaboration list is long because I had the benefit of growing up in the golden age of hip-hip and clubs. Playing venues like Latin Quarters, Palladium, Roxies were a regular part of my Dj lineup.  I was blessed to work with so many key promotional teams around NYC and beyond that gave me access to many key venues to promote my name. I have been on the same Dj lineup with OG's like Kool Herc and Peter Parker to modern day legends like Camillo, AM and Enuff. I have earned my Dj stripes and now listen with enthusiasm and encouragement to the next generation of turntablist.
