Episode 126 The Japanese Shigin Vocal Tradition—and Electronics Playlist Track Time Start Time Introduction –Thom Holmes 04:46 00:00 1. Mix of Susumu Yokota, “Saku” from Sakura (1999 Skintone) plus Abe Shũfu II, “Mount Fuji” from Music Of The Shigin: Chanting To Chinese Poetry (1975 Folkways). Album of electronic music from the late composer Susumu Yokota and a track from Folkways of Japanese shingin folk music. 05:42 04:54 2. Mix of Shiro Michi,“マドンナの宝石 (Intermezzo From "The Jewels Of The Madonna)” from エレクトーン 名曲アルバム (Electone Masterpiece Album)(1965 Polydor). Plus a female shigin performer accompanied by koto from a Japanese collection of shigin singers (1973 Toshiba TY-40077), side 2, track 6. Shiro Michi, Shiro Michi, was a popular Japanese Hammond organist in the 1950s, and Electone artist from the 1950s-2000s since 1958. This track was performed on the Yamaha Electone. 03:02 10:34 3. Mix of Shiro Michi, “ドナウ川の漣 (Danube Waves Waltz)” from エレクトーン 名曲アルバム (Electone Masterpiece Album)(1965 Polydor). Plus a male shigin performer accompanied by bamboo flute and koto from a Japanese collection of shigin singers (1973 Toshiba TY-40077), side 1, track 2. 04:46 13:34 4. Mix of a fragment of Shiro Michi and shigin, which I have called “Shigin Skip Organ” because of the prominence of the LP skip throughout. “ドナウ川の漣 (Danube Waves Waltz)” from エレクトーン 名曲アルバム(Electone Masterpiece Album)(1965 Polydor) plus a skipping record of a male shigin performer with koto. 04:08 18:17 5. Omoide Hatoba, “Alternative Funkaholic” from Kinsei (1995 Earthnoise). 02:30 22:24 6. Omoide Hatoba, “Satellite Groove” from Kinsei (1995 Earthnoise). 03:53 24:52 7. Neohachi, “Dog More Than Cat” from Lovecadio Hearn (2013 White Paddy Mountain). Neohachi is a Japanese female duo, formed in 2005 and featuring Lily (Shigin Vocals) and Elly (Synthesizers). 06:09 28:40 8. Neohachi, “Eternal, Eternal, Eternal” from Lovecadio Hearn (2013 White Paddy Mountain). 02:31 34:36 9. 和楽器バンド (Wagakki Band), “Akatsuki no Ito”from 八奏絵巻(Wildflowers Scroll). Bass, 亜沙 (Asa); Drums, 山葵 (Wasabi); Guitar, 町屋 (Machiya); Koto, [箏], いぶくろ聖志(Ibukuro Masashi); Shakuhachi, [尺八], 神永大輔 (Kaminaga Daisuke); Shamisen, [津軽三味線], 蜷川べに(Ninagawa Beni); Taiko, [和太鼓], 黒流 (Kurona); Shigin Vocals, 鈴華ゆう子 (Suzuhana Yuko). Suzuhana Yuko provides the shigin vocals in this convergence of hard rock and traditional Japanese music. The whole outfit is outstanding but I like the pre-eminence of female musicians. For example, check out this Japanese video of Ninagawa Beni shredding the Shamisen. Here's a 2023 performance by Wagakki Band featuring a vocal by Yuko. 03:28 37:22 10. 和楽器バンド (Wagakki Band), “Nadeshiko Zakura” from 八奏絵巻(Wildflowers Scroll). (Farao (Pharaoh) No Haka)” from Digital Trip ファラオの墓 シンセサイザ ファンタジ (Digital Trip Pharaoh's Tomb Synthesizer Fantasy). Composed By, Synthesizer, Shigenori Kamiya (神谷重徳). 03:12 45:28 12. Gagaku Shigenkai, Ryōō from Unesco Collection, A Musical Anthology of the Orient: Japan II (1962 Musicaphon). "Ryōō" was recorded in Tokyo in 1962. Shigenkai, was a traditional Japanese music ensemble attached to the Imperial Household Agency, playing flutes, drums, and string instruments. I did a remix of this, adding delay and some droning tones and then double-tracking the whole piece as a way to transforms these lovely, acoustic tonalities into an electronic mélange. 07:18 48:38 13. Otomo Yoshihide (大友良英), “Film Maker From Kreuzberg,” from We Insist? (1992 Sound Factory). Turntables, Sampler, Tapes, Guitar, Otomo Yoshihide. 02:55 55:50 14. The second part of this combination track is a different of “On the Floor” that is sung by Mishio Ogawa. The version I am most familiar with was sung by a man so this is a refreshing variation. Computer, Takafumi Fuse; Effects [Sound Effects], Fujio Akatsuka; Engineer, Kazuhiro Tokieda, Takafumi Fuse; Guitar, Shigenori Kamiya; Keyboards, Shuichi Chino; Percussion, Kiyohiko Senba; Saxophone, Voice, Akira Sakata; Voice, Mishio Ogawa. 11:57 01:05:09 Opening background music: Ryuichi Sakamoto, “Nuages” from Heartbeat (1991 Virgin Japan). I've been planning this mix for months now and so excited about it...so it brings me huge joy to finally get it to you. I'll tell you about the influences that helped me create it and then I'll tell you about why I envision it as "Fire Island" house music. First, the influences. I was lucky enough to live in Philly during the glory days of clubbing (the 90s). Because of my close proximity to NYC I was going to clubs on a near-weekly basis listening to internationally famous DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, DJ BUC (RIP), Hex Hector, Louie Vega, Danny Tenaglia and Morabito to name a few. I was going to clubs such as Sound Factory, Roxy, Limelight and Sound Factory Bar(and of course the Pavilion on Fire Island). Those DJs were the most influential to me -- and largely molded me and my style of DJing from the very beginning. So that's a quick bit about where my influences come from. About why I envision this music as "Fire Island" house music: It was almost always a guarantee that me and my friends would stay in the clubs and parties until the very last note rang out -- usually in the wee hours of the morning. During the Autumn, Winter and Spring the above-mentioned clubs were the places to be. As the nights turned into mornings the sound would transition to a spin-chilling sound that was laden with pianos, horns and sweeping melodies. Morning music was a thing and it had a most definite sound. It was jazz, funk, disco and urban influenced. During the summertime the center of gravity in New York moves out to the most magical paradise of the Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove. That same clubbing blueprint is enacted at the Pavilion in the Pines. I have been fortunate to spend more nights than I can count experiencing that glory. But it isn't just about clubbing on Fire Island. House culture is a huge thing on the island. One can walk the boardwalks at 3PM or 3AM and it is guaranteed that there will be music wafting through the air. And it's not just any music. It's *THIS* music. Because this music is melodic and rooted in "real" music...it is also versatile and perfectly aligns itself with not only early morning clubbing but also lazy days by the pool and on the beach. About this particular mix: I hope you love hearing it as much as I loved creating it. It's something of a tale of two sounds (that perfectly belong together). The first half of the mix is made up of stunning piano house pieces. I then transition into a more vocal-centric sound the second half of the mix that is influenced by that jazz, disco and funk that I speak about above. Every note you hear...started in my heart. As I always say...from my HEART...to your EARS. Love. #/Artist/Title/Remix01. Moon Rocket/Main Piano/Piano & Strings Intro02. Wayne Cooper/The Piano Song/Teddy Douglas Remix03. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us." Three New York visionaries discuss the city's '90s heyday. '90s nightlife in New York conjures images of Party Monster, jacking disco house and a rotating cast of mega clubs that saw thousands of revellers pass through their doors each weekend. From Limelight and Sound Factory to Palladium and countless others, clubbing was hitting its stride in New York, while producers like Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones and Damon Wild were producing game-changing 12-inches. But it was also the beginning of a decline, catalysed by the rollout of Mayor Rudy Giuliani's discriminatory policies that slowly gutted the club scene and the communities that called it home. To honour Resident Advisor's partnership with Wire Festival in Brooklyn this weekend, we're revisiting a panel recorded at our 24/7 party at Nowadays in 2018. We tasked the beloved Brooklyn fanzine Love Injection with presenting discussions covering five decades of dance music history. In this panel, Strictly Rhythm cofounder Gladys Pizarro, DJ and producer Lenny Dee and drag superstar and vogue performer Kevin Aviance spoke with journalist (and former RA staffer) Max Pearl about the rise and fall of the city's club scene during its golden decade. They also discussed how the city was sequestered, forcing many artists at the vanguard of '90s-era techno to make music and throw their own parties as the scene grew and shifted beneath the weight of city-wide reforms. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us," said Lenny D. "So when we were doing it, we were making parties out in Brooklyn. A lot of music at that time was made here in Brooklyn—Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones, Tommy Musto, Damon Wild. So we had this scene where we're making great music, but no one's letting us play, so we're just going to do it ourselves." Listen to the episode in full.

In the 1990's, Manhattan's booming dance club scene was hit by two massive trends: Ecstasy and Techno. With the eye-patch wearing Canadian nightlife impresario Peter Gatien standing watch, massive clubs like limelight and Sound Factory became debaucherous drug dens ruled over by the ever-weirder club kids. Soon enough, though, a techno pioneer who would later go on to be involved with Wu Tang Clan saw the potential for massive profits and brought in roughneck junior mafia farm teams from south Brooklyn and Staten Island and things starting getting dark, quick. An infamous tabloid murder, a massive mafia bust and a lurid drug kingpin trial followed, but not before some of the major players relocated to Miami for a bit and made a name for themselves there. Once some former associates started talking, however, it all came crashing down, not just for Chris Paciello, but for the top level five family bosses he testified against. It's time for the men to take centre stage on the dance floor and in this special edition of Men for World Pride in Sydney, that's exactly what they do. Keeping with the Pride Men theme, I've selected tracks from male artists who identify as gay, bisexual or non binary. The set kicks of with the incomparable George Michael and his mega hit song "I Want Your Sex" given a modern spin by Huffnpoof. Division 4 creates a fantastic cover of "You Don't Treat Me No Good" and Sam Smith's new track "I'm Not Here To Make Friends" is a club anthem. Darren Hayes features twice in this set, first up with his Savage Garden collaboration "I Want You" and later with "Step Into The Light". Dirty Disco features two excellent mixes for Erasure and Years & Years respectively. Magnus Carlsson released a song for Stockholm Pride with a great remix by SoundFactory and Ross Alexander covers "I Love My Radio" released in the 80's. One of my favourite male artists is Matt Zarley and his uplifting song "Somebody 4 Everybody" is brilliantly remixed by Moto Blanco. Chris Willis' hit "One Life" features here (I do love me some Chris Willis) and Tommer Mizrahi delivers two top mixes for Jason Walker and Kevin Aviance. The set closes out with the exquisite 7th Heaven remix of "Feel The Music" by Sean Ensign and an updated version of Sylvester's classic disco track "Mighty Real" mixed by Jet Boot Jack. Feel the music and feel the Men in this special World pride edition of Pride Men. Episode 82 Psychedelic Japan, Part 2 Playlist Wha Ha Ha, “On the Floor” from Wha Ha Ha (1983 Recommended Records). This group released three records in 1981, all in Japan. Recommended Records, the UK-based record maker, released this compilation of tracks taken from all three of those records. The group Wha Ha Ha ended at that point but its four principle members went on to varied musical careers. Akira Sakata is an alto saxophonist, Kiyohiko Semba is a percussionist, Mishio Ogawa is a vocalist, and Shuichi Chino is a keyboardist and electronic musician. 10:08 Merzbow, “Untitled 1” from Material Action for Two Microphone (sp) (2nd version) (1984 artist cassette). Masami Akita is one of my long-time favorite Japanese electronic/noise practitioners. He would send me cassettes back in the 1980s and I've always tried to keep up with him. Not strictly a Japanese psychedelic artist, I include him here primarily because, like some of the other artists in this podcast, he has widespread influence on other genres of Japanese electronic music. This prolific Japanese noise artist has released over 500 recordings since 1979.Recorded at Merzbau. Tape, Recorder, Synth, Effects, Kiyoshi Mizutani; Tape, Violin, Electronics, Effects, Masami Akita. Early cassette by Akita. 22:30 Yoshiaki Kinno, track 4 from unknown cassette, 1984.Japanese guitar and saxophone improviser. In the 1980's he established a cassette label featuring a wide range of improvised music. 3:32 Boredoms, “Boil Out UFO” from Boretronix 88' (1988 Mega Scum Groove Inc.). I think this is their first cassette release, going back to 1988. Boredoms (ボアダムス), alternatively known as V∞redoms, is a Japanese experimental/noise/space rock/tribal drumming band from Osaka, founded in 1986 by Yamatsuka Eye. Known for their extended jams and heavy drumming, it is remarkable that they had some mainstream success in the 1990s. Bass, Hira; Drums, EDA; Drums, Vocals, Yoshimi P-We; Guitar, Yamamotor; Music by, Boredoms; Words By, Vocals, Tibetan Bell, Effects (EQ-phasing), cassette tape manipulation, electronics, Eye. 2:18 Boredoms, “Untitled” (excerpt) from Boretronix 3 (1990 Ltd.). Another early cassette release from Yamatsuka Eye on his private label. This cassette consists of remixes of unreleased Boredoms material and fully explores the noise and rhythmic aspects of their work. This is an interesting prelude to their latter, more cohesive works. Bass, Hira; Drums, EDA; Drums, Vocals, Yoshimi P-We; Guitar, Yamamotor; Music by, Boredoms; Words By, Vocals, Effects (EQ-phasing), cassette tape manipulation, electronics, Eye. 12:01 Otomo Yoshihide, “We Insist? A) Rinko-Gun; b) x-Day” from We Insist? (1992 Sound Factory). Japanese experimental musician, turntablist and guitarist. Additional musicians on these tracks, Bass, vocals, Numata Jun; Guitar, Saito Ken-ichi; Vocals, performer (Junk), Lim Soowoong. 5:37 Omoide Hatoba, “Satellite Groove” from Kinsei (1996 Birdman). Japanese psychedelic, alternative, experimental -rock band. Alto Saxophone Isamu Kawamura, Yoshimi Yamazaki, Bass, Vocals, Drums, Percussion, Synthesizer, Drum Machine, Atsushi Tsuyama, Drums, Takashi Ogushi; Drums, Computer, Tape, Chew Hasegawa, Guitar, Vocals, Violin, Percussion, Piano, Synthesizer, Drum Machine, Seiichi Yamamoto, Tenor Saxophone, Satoshi Kawanishi, Trumpet, Yoshimi, Written by, Omoide-Hatoba. 3:53. Omoide Hatoba, “Alternative Funkaholic” from Kinsei (1996 Birdman). A&R, David Katznelson; Alto Saxophone Isamu Kawamura, Yoshimi Yamazaki, Bass, Vocals, Drums, Percussion, Synthesizer, Drum Machine, Atsushi Tsuyama, Drums, Takashi Ogushi; Drums, Computer, Tape, Chew Hasegawa, Guitar, Vocals, Violin, Percussion, Piano, Synthesizer, Drum Machine, Seiichi Yamamoto, Tenor Saxophone, Satoshi Kawanishi, Trumpet, Yoshimi, Written by, Omoide-Hatoba. 2:30 Yasunao Tone, “Part I” from Solo for Wounded CD (1997 Tzadik). Yasunao Tone was one of the founding members of Japan's Fluxus movement and has also been an organizer and participant in many important music and performance groups such as Group Ongaku, Team Random (the first computer art group organized in Japan). Well we guess if you've won 5 Grammys, been nominated for "Producer of the Year", engineering and producing every famous artist of his day along with running the forefront of sound and studio recording techniques and innovations it's probably hard to remember a couple of interactions with "The Cowsills" who were just struggling to stay relevant when our paths crossed twice in 1972 and 1978 ("The Cocaine Drain Album" and "Covered Wagon"). Watch us hold it together as we hear, "Uh, well no I don't remember".... "Covered Wagon" and "This Here Is A Love Song" and "Down In The Valley" was a 6-hour session at the Sound Factory in Hollywood late one week night with Val at the controls and we were thrilled. It was a great night of recording more isolated and remembered in our sparse history but buried in Vals incredible life and experiences. 100 gold and platinum albums. Val Garay is an icon and important historian for the history of rock and roll.

Louie Vega shouldn't need an introduction, but we'll do it anyways. The Bronx-born Puerto Rican artist embodies the soulful sound of New York house music, and he's been doing it since the '80s. His history features a litany of legendary names and clubs, from the Devil's Nest to his much-vaunted residency at The Sound Factory in Manhattan, and he's made music with the likes of Todd Terry, Mood II Swing and Barbara Tucker. But it's with Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez that Vega made his most cherished and influential work as the duo Masters Of Work, putting out huge singles and making house remixes for some of the most iconic names in '90s pop music. To listen Vega's discography, especially as part of Masters At Work, is to hear the evolution of house music and garage (yes, both US and UK). It's difficult to overstate the impact those '90s records had on New York and beyond, and they're still some of the most swinging, undeniable house records ever made. Just try playing a MAW Dub for a newbie and see their reaction. House music has been Vega's lifelong mission, and almost four decades in, he's still refining his craft, moving towards ever-jazzier, ever more soulful sounds. His RA Podcast shows off some of his favorite tracks from contemporaries like Mood II Swing, as well as his band Elements Of Life and a handful of new tracks from his forthcoming album, Expansions In The NYC, which aims to capture the sound of his club night of the same name. You'll hear lush live instrumentation, powerful vocals and, of course, those addictive, sometimes skippy house beats—the sound of a master at work. https://www.mixcloud.com/horatioofficial/horatio-preents-ibizaholic-radioshow-episode-52-special-guest-mix-oscar-g/ Save the best for last. I have the honour and privilege to have as guest star in my radioshow the LEGENDARY DJ AND PRODUCER , MR"DARK BEATS" himself, OSCAR G . If you were to get out a map and track the history of house music – with endless lines sprouting from New York, Chicago and Detroit to points all over the world – you'd have to make a big, red circle around Miami, Florida, and start drawing. Miami was never ground zero to a full-fledged subcultural movement. But it is where Oscar Gaetan, better known as Oscar G, has lived every day of his life. And that fact alone makes it a hub on the global underground. An award-winning songwriter, producer, and DJ, Oscar is one of dance music's brightest and most enduring stars. As part of seminal production teams Liberty City, Murk, and Funky Green Dogs, he boasts hits – Billboard chart-toppers as well as underground smashes – in every decade, every trend, and every market. “Some Lovin',” “Fired Up,” and “Dark Beat” are more than just tracks: They are moments, shared by clubbers worldwide. They're the kind of moments Oscar still creates at Space Miami, his hometown superclub, where he's been a resident DJ for a staggering eight years – coming full circle after a globetrotting career. Oscar and longtime friend and production partner Ralph Falcon grew up in a Miami enlivened by the fresh spirit of hip-hop. “Break dancing, graffiti and the music that went along with it: That's really what got me into DJ-ing in the first place,” he says. By the age of 12, he was already spinning at school dances. Oscar and Ralph started working together at the end of high school, blending the sounds of their youth with the beginnings of house, like Ten City and Blaze; and the darker Euro bands of the time, like Depeche Mode and New Order. “We were always big on doing our own sound, with our own feeling and vibe in every aspect of it; from the way we mixed things to the sounds we chose,” says Oscar. “I remember being obsessed with that for years, and then people started to listen.” The early years bore some of the work for which they're still best known, like often imitated, never duplicated vocals “Some Lovin',” “If You Really Love Someone,” and “Reach For Me” (Tribal). Upon their release in 1993, the pair became instant superstars. “Europe kind of grabbed us,” says Oscar, so they spent a good amount of time touring overseas, eventually visiting every major and minor outpost of the global dance scene, including Zouk Singapore, Ministry Of Sound London, and Stereo Montreal. “Fired Up!” (Twisted), their biggest hit ever, followed in 1996. It topped the Billboard Dance chart, and even cracked the Top 100, peaking at No. 80. They would go on to remix countless major pop artists, from Madonna to Cher to Donna Summer; and appear on mainstream outlets like MTV and Top Of The Pops. The boys also cut two complete Funky Green Dogs albums for major label MCA, “Star” (1999) and “Super California” (2001). But their own measures of success were still decidedly underground: “Once Junior Vasquez played our records at Sound Factory [in New York], we felt like we could retire, and at that point we were like 20,” says Oscar. In March 2000, Space opened in downtown Miami with Oscar as the Saturday night resident, just as the world was paying its annual visit for Winter Music Conference. The club – with its cavernous main room, pummeling German sound system and nitrogen blasts – was the talk of dance world, and the legend of Oscar's residency began to grow. The year 2003 was a big one. Oscar released the “Live @ Space” (Star 69) compilation, and won the Club World Award for “Best Resident DJ” (which he won again in 2007). Murk set a new Billboard Dance chart record, with five No. 1's in a single year: Four singles from their self-titled artist album on Tommy Boy Records, and “Dark Beat” (Twisted), tribal house's first real vocal anthem, which found its way from dance floors onto mainstream radio. “We came up with ‘Dark Beat' in about 15 minutes. Whenever things come that quickly, you know there's something to them,” says Oscar. “But we didn't think radio or anthem; we were thinking more like, ‘Oh man, Danny Tenaglia's gonna be all over this!'” In 2006, Oscar became one of Pacha New York's only non-NY-based monthly residents, strengthening his bond with his home-away-from-home, and its rich dance history. He released a second installment in the Space series in 2007, starting new relationships with Nervous Records in the U.S. and CR2 in the U.K. CR2 also snapped up the Murk catalog, and commissioned new remixes of the classic tracks, including Paul Woolford's takes on “If You Really Love Someone” and “Reach For Me.” And in 2008, after nearly two decades making music, Oscar released out his first solo album, “Innov8” (Nervous). Last year Oscar released a mixed CD “Beats” on Nervous Records and working with his Murk partner Ralph Falcon produced one of the undergrounds anthem of 2012 – Amame – which was released worldwide on Defected. He and Ralph also re-activated the seminal label Murk Records. Even though his passion for music creation is undeniable, it's in his DJ booth where Oscar feels most at home. “On the music side, I've felt pretty energized lately, because the changes in the industry really enable you to be a lot more experimental and take more chances,” he says. “But DJ-ing to me always comes first: I really believe in it as an art form. Having a residency like Space, with a regular crowd, it's the ultimate.”
Mike recalls memories from 1993. Early on Christina held the coveted position of guarding the velvet ropes for some of New York City's most famous nightclubs including Studio54, The Palladium and 1018. One of her proudest accomplishments was creating and owning one of New York City's most legendary dance clubs, The original Sound Factory on West 27th Street. She still enjoys producing events, many which benefit her favorite AIDs charities and various dog rescues.

On July 12, 2018... I released the first ever episode of Philosophy 101… 3 years later.. here we are… Philosophy family.. can you believe it?! I have 3 things to say to all of you; THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! & THANK YOU!!! There are not enough words to express the copious amounts of gratitude that I have for every single person who has supported from the start... From the team who has helped me transform Philosophy 101 into what it is today.. to anyone who has listened to every episode or just one episode.. and most importantly; the universal gratitude that I have for EVERY.. SINGLE.. House-Head that I've ever had the pleasure of having a conversation with, or just simply having shared a dance floor with you over my 29 years of existence… Seriously if you were to tell me 3 years ago, that not only will this podcast be listened to on every continent, throughout 75 different countries, & will have generated over 10K listens... Swear on my moms I would have told you; “Pass me whatever it is that you're smoking on because that sounds like some real fire shit & I want some”… And thennn... if you were to tell me that 6 months into releasing this podcast series, I would then be presented the opportunity to transform Philosophy 101 into an event series. That would not only take over some of Las Vegas' biggest nightclubs, but would enable me to headline open-close sets playing all different kinds of underground noises… And thennnnnn.. that would help to facilitate bringing Philosophy 101 back to my hometown of NYC, & most recently assist in being booked to be the headlining artist for a promenade record label's first 2021 label showcase in Los Angeles representing the Philosophy|CLV moniker... All the whilst, morphing Philosophy 101 into a DJ Collective consisting of likeminded individuals; some of whom I've known for over a decade... But were chosen not based off of how great their DJ skills are, or how well known they are, or where they have played, or how many people they can put through the door... But rather on the purest fact of; real recognize real… This music is who I am… This music has been shaping my life ever since I bought my first underground house 12” vinyl nearly 16 years ago… DJ Pierre aka The Godfather of acid house himself, once said; "Anything that starts off underground is house.. I don't care how big it gets.. if it started out underground.. then it's house!" House isn't just a type of music..it's a way of life..it's a culture..it's an ideology..and for those of us who started chasing this rabbit a long long time ago..we haven't left the rabbit hole since... This is the first Philosophy episode that I can truly say I left a piece of my soul inside of forever. Not only is this mix completely different than how I normally play... It is a beautiful, only can happen in the moment, on the fly, type of journey that explores my 3 favorite era's/decades of house... We starting off with what's closest to my heart.. the 2005-2010 golden era of NYC's tribal that I spent countless hours inside the walls of Pacha NYC, Cielo, & Asseteria listening too… Then rewinding back into the late 90s-early 2000's with that real Sound Factory era type sounds of Johnny Vicious, Jonathan Peters, Robbie Tronco, Sal Parm aka Plasmic Honey, & so on… And finally to round it out by ending off with what started it all; disco classics, original house classics/remixes/edits/reworks, & of course timeless vocals laid over a beautiful 4x4 beat... I hope you enjoy this 3 hour pilgrimage through the sounds of house as much as I did… I love you all... -Nick

This is Draw The Line Radio Show with Jacki-e, featuring my mix in the 1st hr of music made by women and then, for the 2nd hr, I hand the decks over to a female DJ. Helping me Draw The Line this week it's Rebecca Sin who’s based in Denver, USA. Starting to DJ, in 2000, Rebecca was given a residency at the Exchange nightclub in Boston. She split her time between the studio, gigs on the radio and her day job at the Sound Factory record store. Beyond the DJ booth she is head of operations at Wantickets, and has managed the front-of-house at events like Ultra Music Festival. She’s in the 2018 movie Girl, where she was featured as one of seven top female DJs. Every week Rebecca releases a new mix on her Soundcloud page. Link for Rebecca Sin:- Soundcloud:- https://soundcloud.com/rebeccasin In my mix in the first hour I’m playing tracks from the new album from Marie W Anders. FROM TODAY’s EPISODE: Making something out of nothing Promoting your art without losing sight of your art Detaching from outcomes Overcoming distractions and focusing on your art Connect with Mike: http://www.michaelalanart.com/ RESOURCES: Podcasting Together: www.heatherparady.com/podcastingtogether Join our Private Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/2lPut5A Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/heatherparady Michael Alan is a native NYC 1977 NON STOP creative force who’s roots lie in old NYC underground culture, running events and clubs from a young age in the early 90s. Ties and connections from his endless drawing publicly all around the city. He ran shows at the Palladium, Club Expo, Sound Factory, Remote Lounge, Pyramid, to name a few and his own club Michael Alan’s Playhouse. He bridged the gap with Sunday school which took place every Sunday throughout New York where anyone could come display their art or perform, he kept no percent. As a very young kid club promoter he was drawing live at all these huge shows which led him to his path to show at galleries from a very young age. He went from DJing, running performances, spray painting backdrops and helping his friends to showing in Chelsea as a kid. He is famous for his signature line work that has made an impact on NYC. His work varies from drawings, paintings, sculptures, prints, collage, murals, installations, music, and performance. He has various gallery representation, as well as commercial clients (HBO, ABC, DJ Atrak, Cormega, SVA etc.) Michael Alan’s work occupies a living, color coordinated, extra dimensional, linear stage, where everything is happening at the same time. He creates multiple overlaying and underlying techniques to create a beautiful, yet raw and fragile visual language. Various figures and abstract elements pulsate and unfold at the same time in his work. He defines it in Alan Ket’s short film as “figurative abstraction”. Michael’s work ranges from comedic, satyrical, and sinister to lovely and kind, raw and emotional to punk, fashionable to unfashionable, and destructive to harmonic. It contains colorful overlapping continuous detailed line work. The subject ranges from beautiful figures to raw New York commentary. There are paintings inside paintings inside paintings. You can look and see a homeless man fighting a knight on a horse from the Renaissance, or just see what you want to see. Michael’s main goals as an artist are to represent New York City, to never give up, never stop growing, and to create work every day and every night. Every use of material from oil to ink to pastel to spray, even cut ups of the artist’s own drawings are combined into epic visions of emotional forms inhabiting inviting puzzles, or serene complex linear structures connected by looping bolts of pure pigment. They are alive. You are alive. Alan is extremely prolific, laboring away for 12 hours each day, working anywhere in NYC from home, on the bus, his studio, his performances, friend’s hangouts, even doctor’s visits. He has produced over 2,500 completed artworks in spite of enduring massive trauma to his physical body. “I am Michael Alien, an alien who wants good and to exist with a twist of chaos and a big splash of toxic paint!”— Art Info For Michael Alan, art is a combination of harmonious opposites, close observation, catharsis, a means of communication and a radical juxtaposition of dimensional elements. He challenges everything: concepts of figure, composition, media and movement, including the language of drawing. Exploring the ambiguity of time and history, Alan’s work focuses on translating energy into images. Alan was born in the summer of 1977, in Bushwick during the New York City blackout. His work has been featured in 9 New York solo shows, over 200 group shows, and over 200 Living Installations. His work has been discussed in over 200 publications, books and media sources, including the New York Times, The Huffington Post, Bomb Magazine, Art 21, NBC’s Today Show, Marie Claire Italia, Frank 151, Art+Auction, the New York Post, Fox Channel 5, the Village Voice’s “Best in Show”, The Creator’s Project, Art Forum, the Gothamist, Time Out New York, Vice, Frame, American Artist, Animal, Hyperallergic, Curbs and Stoops, Cacao and many more. In addition to his work as a multi-media artist, Michael is the founder and director of the Living Installation, where human beings are transformed into unique, living art objects. These happenings are often set to Alan’s original music, which is recorded featuring artists such as Tim “Love” Lee, Mike’s mom and dad, Renaldo of Renaldo and the Loaf, The Krays, Jello Biafra, Jesse from Yuppiside, The Residents, Tommy Ramone, Ariel Pink, Meredith Monk, Japanther, Ramsey Jones, Geneva Jacuzzi, 3 Teens Kill 4 (remix), Odd Nasdam, and Satellite Jones.
Junior Vasquez who was born Donald Gregory Mattern (really?) is an American DJ, record producer and remixer. With ambitions of becoming a fashion designer, he moved to New York City in 1971. His enthusiasm for DJ Larry Levan at the infamous Paradise Garage led him to Shep Pettibone (another DJ/producer begging for a Legacy induction) where they edited mixes for multiple artists like Madonna, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Pet Shop Boys, and more. Several of his earliest underground house hits like "Work That Pussy" and "Drag Queen" were under the moniker Ellis D with the latter featured here. In 1989, he co-founded the Sound Factory and simultaneously became an in demand remixer for several big label artists. After the Sound Factory closed in 1995, he held multiple residencies including at the Tunnel, and subsequently returned to the former Sound Factory now called Arena. IF MADONNA CALLS Junior introduced Madonna to vogue at the Sound Factory, which served as an inspiration to massively successful song in 1990 by the same name. At the time, she was making a name for herself on the dancefloor by embracing the emerging House Music sounds and flipping them to a more commercial audience. She has long been associated with dance music trends by associating herself with underground names like Shep Pettibone and William Orbit before latching onto Junior Vasquez to remix several tracks from her "Bedtime Stories" album. It was around this time she had allegedly agreed to perform at one of Junior's Sound Factory shows and bowed out at the last moment. Queens being queens, Junior took one of the messages she left on his answering machine and looped it into the deep house groove "If Madonna Calls" without her permission using the phrase "this is Madonna" "are you there" "call me in Miami." The bitch track went all the way to #2 on the Billboard Dance Club charts and spawned multiple remixes — including anniversary remixes. Afterwards, any chance of reconciliation and working together again went out the door. This actually turned out to be lucky move on her part as she went on to introduce the world to Victor Calderone and Peter Rauhofer (who was already riding high with Club 69). Nevertheless, neither of them are getting any younger and clearly Madge is going through some things at the moment. It's time to come together and bury the hatchet. Life's too short for former besties to hold onto grudges. This set does not really reflect any official Junior remixes of Madonna other than "Secret" and the fabulous Marvin Gaye rendering of "I Want You" where Junior was commissioned to remix the track but it never received an official release. DIVA DIVA DIVA Scroll through the list of of diva's in the Party Favorz "Diva Hall of Fame" and you will be hard-pressed to find anyone Junior hasn't remixed. From Annie Lennox to Whitney Houston and every diva in between, there's hardly anyone in there that he doesn't know or hasn't remixed. Seriously! These two volumes honoring the master DJ are nowhere near as comprehensive and representative of this man's work and barely scratch the surface. It would take probably 10 sets to really showcase his amazing talent. Drugs, Sex and Dance In 2006, Junior gave an interview to A&U (America's AIDS Magazine) about a 5 year period where everything was a blur due to abusing crystal meth. I remember this article very well but it appears to have been taken down and his Wikipedia page omits it entirely. While he's clean and sober now and starting a new chapter in his life — this is an important story that shouldn't be buried. There are excerpts and message boards dedicated to this dark period in his life but it's not fair to quote any of them without the original interview as a source. I understand there is currently a biopic being made about his life. Considering how long he's been in the industry and how many artists he's worked with — it's my hope that they don't whitewash an important factor of...

I remember when I fell in love with Trance. It was in the early turning of the millennium in February of 2001 in the middle of the brutal New England cold when I got picked up from work by a friend. He was listening to some amazing music, it was fresh, atmospheric, chill, beautiful with warm vocals. I couldn’t resist asking who that was. He handed me the double CD, ATB Two Worlds. That was the moment my heart opened to feel something through music I never felt before. It spoke a new language I never heard before. I knew electronic dance music through the lens of Eurodance, but this was something else, it was different, it was magic, it was running waters to my soul and warmth to my spirit. I knew at that moment that the dream I captured of being DJ years prior, and eventually try to make some music like that was confirmed. The next day I walked into my local music store and bought the most magical piece of music I’ve ever experienced. The journey began. After Two Worlds I bought anything and everything I can find that was in the same category or similar until I came across Nyana in the summer of 2003. It sealed the deal for me with another magic moment. I was graduating High School that same year, so it meant that I would have a lot of time in my hands. Indeed I had, and during that time I bought two cheat turntables and a cheap mixer, some vinyl and started the lessons by teaching myself the art of mixing two or more great tracks together and figuring out my taste. During that search, I came across a mix album titled Last Dance. It was 3 discs pack including two mixed CDs by Jonathan Peters with a bonus DVD recorded inside Sound Factory in New York City. At that time, Sound Factory was the hottest club in NYC. That opened up my mind to the New York underground scene. A scene I wanted to be part of it. I never made it there, but I always enjoyed the New York sound. As the journey progressed I started to feel comfortable behind the desk in my bedroom. I had a friend, perhaps my biggest supporter, that was always with me. He loved Trance as much as I did. He supported me when I messed up, as well as when I did well. When I got my first beat match, he was the first one I called. It as around 3AM one night, he drove to my place, and we listened to the whole 3 hours set I recorded just so he can hear my progress. He believed in me sincerely. Sometimes all you need in life is one of those friends that truly believe in you. In 2005 I launched a weekly podcast featuring 2 hours of some of the best trance and progressive music I could find. Two years later, I joined an internet radio and held a weekly radio show that ended up being broadcast all around the world. Internet radio was in its infancy back then, so everyone was trying to figure out how to make it work. DI.FM was the biggest and still is to this day. Looking back now, I’m so proud I was involved in that early stage. In the summer of 2008, I was celebrating the 100th episode of my radio show and I wanted to do something special. The first classics edition was born. In the radio show I was limited to a two-hour window because, of course, other shows needed to be broadcast. But I wanted to do an extended episode. I wanted to include every track from all of those years of discovery into one very long episode. To honor my radio show, I recorded a shorter, 2-hour Classics Episode, and then a 7-hour episode exclusive to my podcast subscribers. And that is the show you will listen to. When I was thinking about the Classics Edition for 2019, I wanted to do something big and special as well. It’s the end of a decade, and the start of a new one and I wanted to go back to my roots. So I was listening to that 100th Episode from 2008, and said, “this is it. I’m going to publish this show”. For the last two months, I have been working on this episode, rearranging the tracks a bit, cutting some from the original show, and adding others that brings even more meaning. To make it even more special, I stretched out to the maximum, 8 hours of deeply rooted music that made a huge impact in my earlier years. I even included one track from the Last Dance album, one of my favorites. In closing, I just want to say that, this is not a tribute to the so-called “Golden Age Of Trance”. It is more like a personal diary I want to keep because these tracks have so much meaning in my life. Even though today I play a very different type of music, I believe my taste matured to another level. I enjoy listening to music that brings meaning and takes me into an emotional journey and lately I find them in the slower BPM. I don’t believe there ever was a Golden Age, it was just music. At that time for me was Trance, today, the genre progressed forward so as I progressed forward involving and developing my taste to these beautiful sounds. Music is music and it speaks to us all in different ways and leaves its mark in our story. These tracks represent the mark that those sounds from the 2000s left in me. I hope you enjoy this extended Classics Edition. Happy Holiday and may we all have an amazing new decade exploring and creating even moments like this. Pyramids of sand march into the distance as night began to settle over the dunes... Hailing from Montreal with Lebanese/Persian roots, formerly known as BiG AL, BiGz is surely one of the longest serving, globally renowned and respected Middle Eastern DJs on the planet, starting his extensive career back in 1989. Having fallen in love with music at a very young age, his journey evolved naturally, leading him to the New York underground house sound. BiGz was among the first to import western club music and culture back to his native Lebanon where he hosted the primary radio show spoken in the English language; playing underground House Music and Disco imported from the USA and Europe. But in a civil war torn country, it was time to spread his wings and search for the source. Arriving to the USA in the early 90’s, BiGz became a regular club kid at the Sound Factory, Red Zone, Limelight, Shelter, Tunnel, Twilo, Palladium/Arena, Arc/Vinyl and other seminal venues, soaking up sounds laid down by Junior Vasquez, Danny Tenaglia, Masters At Work, Roger Sanchez, Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries, Francois K. and more. His warm demeanor, powerhouse work-ethic and boundless talent have kept him at the epicenter of electronic music for almost three decades, with absolutely no signs of slowing down. Whether behind the decks, in the studio, touring or showcasing new artists via his networks, BiGz continues his ceaseless mission: to tell a story, educate, diffuse good vibes, be the liaison between the old-school and the contemporary while always pushing the sonic barriers to bring exceptional sound quality and music to the world. Up until the last decade, New York nightlife was the standard bearer of the global underground party scene. Studio 54 and The Sound Factory were era-defining clubs and ground zero for fashion and culture movements in New York. Then came members-only establishments and scene killing bottle service of the naughts and New York nightlife was declared dead. ‘It's all moved to Brooklyn' has been the refrain, but to where exactly - Does New York currently have a thriving nightlife scene worth talking about?

Never did he imagine that someday it would help shape his career. It was the early 2000's that he first was introduced to House Music. He attended clubs in New York like Exit, Arc, and Sound Factory. One night he was at Arc for Danny Tenaglia's "Be Yourself" party and all it took was one moment and one song set him on the path to become a DJ. Spending the most of that decade learning the art of beatmatching and mixing with vinyl, he eventually started to gain local attention with some promoters. In 2007, under the name "Cheric" he landed his first residency at Rebel NYC. A year later, he went to become a resident for ILoveHouseMusicNYC.com which eventually led to his first big break in 2010 with the Groove Cruise Miami. 2010 was also the same year he decided he wanted to produce the music and not just play it. While learning how to produce, he created a group called Static & Bass with a childhood friend and Trance DJ. The duo went on to become residents at Pacha NYC and in 2013 they won the Discovery Project and was invited to play his first Festival at EDC NY. Uninspired by the direction his music was taking him, in 2015 he went solo and completely changed his sound. "I wanted to go back to my House and Deep House roots, I wasn't enjoying the music anymore" The past 2 years Eric has "matured" his sound to the Progressive and Deep influences that started it all... ссылка ссылка

A new mix, Inspired by my Sunday mornings listening to Junior Vasquez at Sound Factory and Arena.
Factory! Factory! Werk me goddamnit! It's time to pay our respects to one of the finest dj's of all time who also once went by the name of DON — the legendary DONALD MATTERN a.k.a. Junior Vasquez. This mix takes us back to the original Sound Factory era when Junior was laying down the sounds of the NY vogue scene. Some of these are his productions, and some are tracks he just used to play out all the time. Either way it is a massive win for humanity. Enjoy. It was recorded in a seven and a half hour set featuring David Morales with son Brandon Morales and an opening set by Richard Vasquez. The evening was so charged with emotion it just seemed like the dance floor was floating its way right up to the heavens. Every track and mix was inspired by the unmatchable talents of Frankie Knuckles. I felt so honored to be asked to do the opening by both David Morales and Carmel Ophir, owner of The Vagabond. And when I accepted I did not tell them that I was sick as a dog with the “Plague” that was the aftermath of the Winter Music Conference. I have never demanded antibiotics for flu. But this time I described to my doctor how important this was to me and demanded that he give me whatever antibiotics that would make me functional on that night. One would hardly believe that Frankie and David with the Def Mix family had been there several days before for the WMC Def Mix party which was the hottest ticket of the week… never imagining that Frankie was not to return to us. Being one of the pioneers of house music in the eighties, naturally I knew Frankie early on. When he came to spin as a resident at my club The Choice I could scarcely believe that he was actually in my house working that all analogue sound system on a Friday night. Later I got to hear him spin regularly at SoundFactory… then SoundFactory Bar and then RedZone. We both lived in the neighborhood known as The Lower East Side. He a few doors away from Dance Tracks record store. I lived one block away on Second Street… and The Choice was three blocks east of us on 3rd Street. We formed a strong brotherly bond when we were talking about our upbringing and found that we both attended the same church in the seventies. A church that had the best choir in Manhattan... Faith Temple Church of God in Christ up on Sugar Hill in Harlem. the minister of music was Professor Herman Stevens. I got my style of playing the Hammond organ from Professor Stevens. The spirit of C.O.G.I.C was all up in Frankie’s music and is best demonstrated in his classic “The Pressure” Please excuse my two tripped up mixes… it was a miracle that I was actually on my feet that night. David Morales’ segment of the evening can be found posted on Mixcloud in two parts. photo: RichardVasquez.DavidMorales.CarmelOphir.TheVagabond

Welcome back to another Universal Rhythm Session. This week we welcome...ADAM FREEMER. DJ. Producer. Sound Engineer. Not many can claim to be truly successful on "both sides of the mixer", but besides being a world renown dj and producer, Adam has worked on and engineered some of the world's finest nightclub sound systems. His skills are often requested in the studio by other producers wanting to tap into his 15+ years of music production and Pro Tools experience. Adam's maintained consistent support from some of dance music's heaviest hitters such as Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed & Victor Calderone to name just a few. After filling in for Danny Tenaglia at his now infamous “Be Yourself” party at Vinyl, New York and playing at New York staple clubs such as Twilo, Limelight and Sound Factory over 10 years ago, Adam has gone on to tour the world several times over as a dj. With a production career that now spans two decades, Adam's first major release, H2O, was released on TWISTED records back in 2002. H2O featured house legend Alan T. providing the vocal snippet to this club stomping first effort which received support from some of dance music's biggest names of the time such as Anthony Pappa, DJ Vibe, and Tom “Superchumbo” Stephan. Adam has since gone on to release many chart topping singles including Underground Baby! which achieved top 5 download status on Beatport. On the remix front, with multiple Billboard charted remixes under his belt including two #1 Billboard remixes of the legendary Yoko Ono and a long list of remixes by respected names such as DJ Chus, Cevin Fisher, D-Formation and Mistress Barbara, Adam has solidified his standing as a respected dance music producer and re-mixer. In 2008 Adam started his own label, Mecha Recordings and besides releasing his own work, the label has released remixes and singles from artists such as Lance DeSardi, D-Formation, DJ Simi and D-Unity.Across North America, from Stereo, Montreal, Ruby Skye, San Francisco and staple clubs in New York, Miami and his home town of Philadelphia, Adam has been touring as a dj for over 10 years. On a global level, the list is even longer from all over South America to Europe and throughout Asia where he recently visited Womb, Tokyo. Adam continues to evolve as a dj incorporating new sounds into his sets which have their roots in techno, house and soulful deep grooves. With a full-length remix album about to released this Summer on TWISTED and many other remix and original projects in progress, Adam's touring schedule is about to become busier then ever.As a sound engineer, Adam's knowledge spans from engineering tracks in the studio to engineering top notch nightclub audio systems. In recent years Adam's been designing and engineering sound systems around the world and has helped create a resurgence in nightlife in his home town of Philadelphia by bringing quality nightclub audio to the city as never before. In 2008 Adam started his own label, Mecha Recordings and besides releasing his own work, the label has released remixes and singles from artists such as Lance DeSardi, D-Formation, DJ Simi and D-Unity. Across North America, from Stereo, Montreal, Ruby Skye, San Francisco and staple clubs in New York, Miami and his home town of Philadelphia, Adam has been touring as a dj for over 10 years. On a global level, the list is even longer from all over South America to Europe and throughout Asia where he recently visited Womb, Tokyo. Adam continues to evolve as a dj incorporating new sounds into his sets which have their roots in techno, house and soulful deep grooves. With a full-length remix album about to released this Summer on TWISTED and many other remix and original projects in progress, Adam’s touring schedule is about to become busier then ever. As a sound engineer, Adam's knowledge spans from engineering tracks in the studio to engineering top notch nightclub audio systems. In recent years Adam’s been designing and engineering sound systems around the world and has helped create a resurgence in nightlife in his home town of Philadelphia by bringing quality nightclub audio to the city as never before. He’s currently working on his own nightclub project which will take prominence as the premier nightclub & sound system in Philadelphia and also be one of the best nightclub sound systems in North America. Welcome back to another Universal Rhythm Session. This week we welcome... ADAM FREEMER. DJ. With a production career that now spans two decades, Adam’s first major release, H2O, was released on TWISTED records back in 2002. A techy feast to sink your ears in to for this months guest mix, presenting RAZE (Neil Castle) he has graced the decks at many events across the South West UK for years, his mix is proof of this guys skill in tune selection and mixing..... Enjoy! xXx DJ Raze debuted in the South West in 1993, a few months on from when he first ever touched a pair of record decks. The Plymouth Warehouse proved to be of a huge influence with Raze diligently collecting the records he had heard every week from the big names he saw. This passion and enthusiasm lead to a set playing for Speed Promotions alongside Slipmatt, and a chance encounter following this meant he also span an impromptu set at the legendary Plymouth Pavilions for long standing rave promoters 'Obsessed' From Hardcore, as the years went on, the progression into Trance followed, and Raze landed a set at 'Bossanova' (Sound Factory) and continued to play for some years before taking a short break to raise his family. Now to the present, and the mixing bug has been caught again, with Raze holding residencies for TranceFormNation (Exeter) and Liquid Pulse (Plymouth), where he has performed alongside Mark EG, M-Zone, Signum, Joey Riot, Nick The Kid, Kidd Kaos, Tek-Tonic and many more. JOACHIM GARRAUD @ SOUND FACTORY - LYON (Feb.2012)
Сейчас Ben уделяет больше всего внимания progressive саунду, мелодичному, чистому, глубокому и темному ... 01.Shopping Therapy - Sofia Diaries (Original Mix) 02.Juan Deminicis - Dark Conscience (Original Mix) 03.Alex Villanueva - Better For You (Original Mix) 04.Tom Eales - Illuminate (Arnas D & Kastis Torrau Remix) 05.Tropical Highlight - My Orbit (Original Mix) 06.Wav-E & Paul Key - Clear Skies (FranzisD Remix) 07.Easy Groove - Dubble (Alejo Gonzalez Remix) 08.Sound Process - Simple Chords (Nikko Z Remix) 09.Maxplay - Silent Whisper (Inner Solution)
Episode 2 of the DeepSoulMusic Podcast features a VINYL ONLY early 90´s garage house music from new york city set.At the late 80s and beginning of the 90s new york producers and dj´s started mixing electronic house beats with r´n´b grooves. The sound was named after the legendary night club Paradise Garage - Garage House.Let´s get back into time, when producers like Frankie Knuckles and David Morales got Grammy´s for remixing r´n´b artists and their club mixes was published all over the world. In clubs like Paradise Garage, Zanzibar, Sound Factory and The Shelter the Party didn´t stopped.I found my love to this music by listening to recordings of the legendary Mastermixx of Tony Humphries and some mixes by Frankie Knuckles and collected a lot of records from this era of house music.I am sorry, some of the records have some scratches and so you hear some leaps. One leap is inside a transition, so the beat isn't right… Take the time machine and listen to the sound of the early 90´s. Thats not just music, it´s a state of mind!Playlist:The Sound of Blackness - The Pressure (Frankie Knuckles Mix)Carolyn Harding and Damon Horton - Sing A Song (Masters At Work Instrumental)Ira Levi - Live Your Life Banji Boys - Love ThangAlthea Mc Queen - Changes (Blaze on King Street Club Mix)Black Magic - Let It Go (KenLou Mix)Deep Zone - It´s Gonna Be AlrightHeavens Gate - Paradise ColoursDarci - Let´s Talk About it (Deep Metro Mix)Alison Limerik - Where Love Lives (Knuckles & Morales Classic Mix)DJ Disciple - That Whats Life All AboutX-Fade - Good & Plenty Love (DJ Pierre´s Wildpitch Mix)Urban Soul - Until We Meet Again (Urban Soul Original Mix)Frankie Knuckles pres. SOUND FACTORY 2011 (Lyon, FRANCE)
Today Milly De Mori, aka DJ millydemori, is considered one of the upcoming female international DJs in electronic music. Between club gigs, radio, production work and now her personal label SoundSelective Records, her career has been steadily growing to a rounder artist profile. HIGHGRADE REC., FLASH, MALATOID, PRSSLAB REC., LANDED, KRITICAL NOISE REC. or STRIKE are some of the labels she's released with, besides her own SOUNDSELECTIVE RECORDINGS. Fascinated more with tecky sounds and funky basslines than with vocals, Milly De Mori finds her roots in house music in the late 80's/beginning 90's, when hanging out in Ibiza she was first exposed to the 4/4's that changed her life. Italian born living in Milan, Milly decided to move to NY in '93 where she spent 12 years, until 2005. During her US stay Milly bloomed as a DJ artist, and the exposure to a effervescent 90’s New York dance scene with clubs like Sound Factory and Twilo (Danny Tenaglia) or Body & Soul (with Francois K, Clausell and Krivit) or the teck house Matter-Form parties (with Adult Napper, Mr C) contributed to shape her sound to a true mix of electronic and organic elements, thus creating a very personal style that quickly found a great response in the hottest markets like NYC, Atlanta and Miami. In 2009 Milly started her own record label SoundSelective Records with base in New York and distributed by Straight Distribution (Germany).Besides herself, she's also featuring artitst like Luca Doobie, Monopolar, Alex Costa, PToile and Landed, and exploring the boundaries between Teck House, House and Tecno. Supported by Coccoluto, Ivan Smagghe, Laurent Garnier, Ellen Allien, Mark Knight, Cristian Varela, Simon & Shaker, Technasia, Francesco Farfa, Loco Dice.. more infos & sounds: www.djmillydemori.com/djmillydemori.com www.myspace.com/millydemori www.soundselectiverecords.com www.myspace.com/millybar Tracklist: 01. Part 2 of this series takes us into the depths of New York nightlife in the early 90's, when clubs like the original Sound Factory, the Palladium and Red Zone were the breeding grounds for new forms of dance music. What was most striking about this era was the unique blend of mainstream artists with underground house remixes, resulting in accessible yet innovative grooves and hooks. Unlike the dance music of today, the tracks were actual fully developed "songs" rather than snippets of usable material, and their ability to remain fresh 20 years on is truly a testament to the quality of their productions. Back to the 90's - Pt. 2 01 :: Yesterday & Today - Danny Tenaglia 02 :: Feel Like Singin' (Erotica Mix by David Morales) - Sandy B. 03 :: Vibeology (Hurley's House Mix) - Paula Abdul 04 :: Sweat (Sweat The Club) - Jay Williams 05 :: I'm The One You Need (Extended Club Version) - Jody Watley 06 :: Women In Love (Women In Lust Mix by David Shaw) - TMT 07 :: Don't You Want My Love (Street Style) - Jomanda 08 :: All We Got (It's Not Enough, Never Enough) (Never Enough House Mix by Shep Pettibone) - Michael McDonald 09 :: Work This Pussy (Hurt Me Mix) - Ellis D 10 :: I Wanna Be Free (The Higher Mix) - Luna Project 11 :: Love & Happiness (Yemaya Y Ochùn) (12" Club Mix) - River Ocean feat. I know I said I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to get this mix complete, but I sat down yesterday and knocked it out in about an hour. The problem I knew I was going to have was the Janet Jackson and the Mary J. Blige tunes. The HQ2 mix for Janet's "Someone To Call My Lover" is not very DJ friendly by any aspect. No intro and the outro begins to slow down making it useless for beatmixing, much less keying the song with another. "Family Affair" by MJB is more user-friendly but requires a very specific song to key into, which I knew I didn't have. So, I just did the easiest thing possible and performed a start/stop on the Janet and managed to beatmix the MJB. Nothing special, but it works. From that point on, this thing just flowed flawlessly! Overall, I'm not only surprised by how well this set came out by I am very pleased as well. What you have in this final mix is a 2001 house lovers dream come true. As previously stated, it contains several songs that I couldn't work in the rest of the mixes and several alternative versions from those previously used. For me, one of the sweet points is "In These Shoes" by Bette Midler. It's been a while since I listened to these mixes, but it dawned on me that the "Mark" in the "Mark's Heel to Platforms Vocal Mix" is actually Mark Picchiotti. Probably one his earlier mixes that I never appreciated as much as I do now. It's a perfect t-dance alternative to Jonathan Peter's big room Sound Factory remix featured earlier. The other surprise was Warren Clarke's sweet and funky take on J-Lo's "I'm Real". Obviously, I didn't pay much attention to these back in the day, but they sure are nice additions this go 'round. In fact, the same can be said for Friburn and Urik's "High Pass Mix" of PSB and Peter Rauhofer's "Break 4 Love". However, I was disappointed in Crystal Waters' "Come On Down". I'm not familiar with this version, which is sort of an Alex Gaudino Ibiza structured mix. I was hoping for the original or the Tamperer mixes which use the "Price is Right" theme for the groove. Though I'm not familiar with this version, it's decent enough to be included and I thank Eric for that. I'm still waiting for the used maxi to show up, but couldn't wait any longer to make the mix. You might also be wondering why I didn't go with the Ralphi Rosario Classic House mix of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going". For one, typical of Rosabel and Ralphi, they used a lot of what I call "dirty beats" back then. They were uneven and had way too much percussion, resulting in my having to painstakingly go through each beat to ensure they match up. Frankly, I always thought that the Junior Vasquez mix was way underappreciated anyway, so I went ahead used that take instead. The end result of that decision is outstanding. Another song I fondly remember is Junior's bootleg take on the massive Blu Cantrell song "Hit'em Up Style" from that year. It was never an official release but it was hot! I want to thank Klaus for that long lost gem. After checking it out, it was much slower than I remember, so I had to speed it up to fit in with the rest of the mix. I don't think anyone will mind. So there you have it. My take on 2001, the year that was. I think the next Chrome Edition will go back and focus on some heavy hitters from the 90s before getting on to 2002. Regardless, that will still be several months away. For now, I think I'll start working on the next BPM Edition before getting into the Spring Edition. I'm holding out for a few hopefuls for that mix, but I should be able to get it out by Easter. I've got a busy week this week and have to make up for lost time from the last. Thankfully, the rain finally stopped yesterday afternoon and it's shaping up to be a gorgeous Sunday before the rain comes back on Wednesday. I hope everyone liked this throwback as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you. I've got no firm dates for the next mix, just know that it's coming up. So,
