Episode 126 The Japanese Shigin Vocal Tradition—and Electronics Playlist Track Time Start Time Introduction –Thom Holmes 04:46 00:00 1. Mix of Susumu Yokota, “Saku” from Sakura (1999 Skintone) plus Abe Shũfu II, “Mount Fuji” from Music Of The Shigin: Chanting To Chinese Poetry (1975 Folkways). Album of electronic music from the late composer Susumu Yokota and a track from Folkways of Japanese shingin folk music. 05:42 04:54 2. Mix of Shiro Michi,“マドンナの宝石 (Intermezzo From "The Jewels Of The Madonna)” from エレクトーン 名曲アルバム (Electone Masterpiece Album)(1965 Polydor). Plus a female shigin performer accompanied by koto from a Japanese collection of shigin singers (1973 Toshiba TY-40077), side 2, track 6. Shiro Michi, Shiro Michi, was a popular Japanese Hammond organist in the 1950s, and Electone artist from the 1950s-2000s since 1958. This track was performed on the Yamaha Electone. 03:02 10:34 3. Mix of Shiro Michi, “ドナウ川の漣 (Danube Waves Waltz)” from エレクトーン 名曲アルバム (Electone Masterpiece Album)(1965 Polydor). Plus a male shigin performer accompanied by bamboo flute and koto from a Japanese collection of shigin singers (1973 Toshiba TY-40077), side 1, track 2. 04:46 13:34 4. Mix of a fragment of Shiro Michi and shigin, which I have called “Shigin Skip Organ” because of the prominence of the LP skip throughout. “ドナウ川の漣 (Danube Waves Waltz)” from エレクトーン 名曲アルバム(Electone Masterpiece Album)(1965 Polydor) plus a skipping record of a male shigin performer with koto. 04:08 18:17 5. Omoide Hatoba, “Alternative Funkaholic” from Kinsei (1995 Earthnoise). 02:30 22:24 6. Omoide Hatoba, “Satellite Groove” from Kinsei (1995 Earthnoise). 03:53 24:52 7. Neohachi, “Dog More Than Cat” from Lovecadio Hearn (2013 White Paddy Mountain). Neohachi is a Japanese female duo, formed in 2005 and featuring Lily (Shigin Vocals) and Elly (Synthesizers). 06:09 28:40 8. Neohachi, “Eternal, Eternal, Eternal” from Lovecadio Hearn (2013 White Paddy Mountain). 02:31 34:36 9. 和楽器バンド (Wagakki Band), “Akatsuki no Ito”from 八奏絵巻(Wildflowers Scroll). Bass, 亜沙 (Asa); Drums, 山葵 (Wasabi); Guitar, 町屋 (Machiya); Koto, [箏], いぶくろ聖志(Ibukuro Masashi); Shakuhachi, [尺八], 神永大輔 (Kaminaga Daisuke); Shamisen, [津軽三味線], 蜷川べに(Ninagawa Beni); Taiko, [和太鼓], 黒流 (Kurona); Shigin Vocals, 鈴華ゆう子 (Suzuhana Yuko). Suzuhana Yuko provides the shigin vocals in this convergence of hard rock and traditional Japanese music. The whole outfit is outstanding but I like the pre-eminence of female musicians. For example, check out this Japanese video of Ninagawa Beni shredding the Shamisen. Here's a 2023 performance by Wagakki Band featuring a vocal by Yuko. 03:28 37:22 10. 和楽器バンド (Wagakki Band), “Nadeshiko Zakura” from 八奏絵巻(Wildflowers Scroll). (Farao (Pharaoh) No Haka)” from Digital Trip ファラオの墓 シンセサイザ ファンタジ (Digital Trip Pharaoh's Tomb Synthesizer Fantasy). Composed By, Synthesizer, Shigenori Kamiya (神谷重徳). 03:12 45:28 12. Gagaku Shigenkai, Ryōō from Unesco Collection, A Musical Anthology of the Orient: Japan II (1962 Musicaphon). "Ryōō" was recorded in Tokyo in 1962. Shigenkai, was a traditional Japanese music ensemble attached to the Imperial Household Agency, playing flutes, drums, and string instruments. I did a remix of this, adding delay and some droning tones and then double-tracking the whole piece as a way to transforms these lovely, acoustic tonalities into an electronic mélange. 07:18 48:38 13. Otomo Yoshihide (大友良英), “Film Maker From Kreuzberg,” from We Insist? (1992 Sound Factory). Turntables, Sampler, Tapes, Guitar, Otomo Yoshihide. 02:55 55:50 14. Engineer, Producer, Voice, Synthesizer, Tape, Koto (Miniature 13 String, Taisho-goto), Plastic Flute, Percussion, Haco. Vocalist/lyricist-composer/multi-instrumentalist/sound-artist. Album compiled for the UK release from the original Japan records known as the Glass Tube LP and an After Dinner 7.” 04:11 58:42 15. The second part of this combination track is a different of “On the Floor” that is sung by Mishio Ogawa. The version I am most familiar with was sung by a man so this is a refreshing variation. Computer, Takafumi Fuse; Effects [Sound Effects], Fujio Akatsuka; Engineer, Kazuhiro Tokieda, Takafumi Fuse; Guitar, Shigenori Kamiya; Keyboards, Shuichi Chino; Percussion, Kiyohiko Senba; Saxophone, Voice, Akira Sakata; Voice, Mishio Ogawa. 11:57 01:05:09 Opening background music: Ryuichi Sakamoto, “Nuages” from Heartbeat (1991 Virgin Japan). I've been planning this mix for months now and so excited about it...so it brings me huge joy to finally get it to you. I'll tell you about the influences that helped me create it and then I'll tell you about why I envision it as "Fire Island" house music. First, the influences. I was lucky enough to live in Philly during the glory days of clubbing (the 90s). Because of my close proximity to NYC I was going to clubs on a near-weekly basis listening to internationally famous DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, DJ BUC (RIP), Hex Hector, Louie Vega, Danny Tenaglia and Morabito to name a few. I was going to clubs such as Sound Factory, Roxy, Limelight and Sound Factory Bar(and of course the Pavilion on Fire Island). Those DJs were the most influential to me -- and largely molded me and my style of DJing from the very beginning. So that's a quick bit about where my influences come from. About why I envision this music as "Fire Island" house music: It was almost always a guarantee that me and my friends would stay in the clubs and parties until the very last note rang out -- usually in the wee hours of the morning. During the Autumn, Winter and Spring the above-mentioned clubs were the places to be. As the nights turned into mornings the sound would transition to a spin-chilling sound that was laden with pianos, horns and sweeping melodies. Morning music was a thing and it had a most definite sound. It was jazz, funk, disco and urban influenced. During the summertime the center of gravity in New York moves out to the most magical paradise of the Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove. That same clubbing blueprint is enacted at the Pavilion in the Pines. I have been fortunate to spend more nights than I can count experiencing that glory. But it isn't just about clubbing on Fire Island. House culture is a huge thing on the island. One can walk the boardwalks at 3PM or 3AM and it is guaranteed that there will be music wafting through the air. And it's not just any music. It's *THIS* music. Because this music is melodic and rooted in "real" music...it is also versatile and perfectly aligns itself with not only early morning clubbing but also lazy days by the pool and on the beach. About this particular mix: I hope you love hearing it as much as I loved creating it. It's something of a tale of two sounds (that perfectly belong together). The first half of the mix is made up of stunning piano house pieces. I then transition into a more vocal-centric sound the second half of the mix that is influenced by that jazz, disco and funk that I speak about above. Every note you hear...started in my heart. As I always say...from my HEART...to your EARS. Love. #/Artist/Title/Remix01. Moon Rocket/Main Piano/Piano & Strings Intro02. Wayne Cooper/The Piano Song/Teddy Douglas Remix03. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us." Three New York visionaries discuss the city's '90s heyday. '90s nightlife in New York conjures images of Party Monster, jacking disco house and a rotating cast of mega clubs that saw thousands of revellers pass through their doors each weekend. From Limelight and Sound Factory to Palladium and countless others, clubbing was hitting its stride in New York, while producers like Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones and Damon Wild were producing game-changing 12-inches. But it was also the beginning of a decline, catalysed by the rollout of Mayor Rudy Giuliani's discriminatory policies that slowly gutted the club scene and the communities that called it home. To honour Resident Advisor's partnership with Wire Festival in Brooklyn this weekend, we're revisiting a panel recorded at our 24/7 party at Nowadays in 2018. We tasked the beloved Brooklyn fanzine Love Injection with presenting discussions covering five decades of dance music history. In this panel, Strictly Rhythm cofounder Gladys Pizarro, DJ and producer Lenny Dee and drag superstar and vogue performer Kevin Aviance spoke with journalist (and former RA staffer) Max Pearl about the rise and fall of the city's club scene during its golden decade. They also discussed how the city was sequestered, forcing many artists at the vanguard of '90s-era techno to make music and throw their own parties as the scene grew and shifted beneath the weight of city-wide reforms. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us," said Lenny D. "So when we were doing it, we were making parties out in Brooklyn. A lot of music at that time was made here in Brooklyn—Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones, Tommy Musto, Damon Wild. So we had this scene where we're making great music, but no one's letting us play, so we're just going to do it ourselves." Listen to the episode in full.

In the 1990's, Manhattan's booming dance club scene was hit by two massive trends: Ecstasy and Techno. With the eye-patch wearing Canadian nightlife impresario Peter Gatien standing watch, massive clubs like limelight and Sound Factory became debaucherous drug dens ruled over by the ever-weirder club kids. Soon enough, though, a techno pioneer who would later go on to be involved with Wu Tang Clan saw the potential for massive profits and brought in roughneck junior mafia farm teams from south Brooklyn and Staten Island and things starting getting dark, quick. An infamous tabloid murder, a massive mafia bust and a lurid drug kingpin trial followed, but not before some of the major players relocated to Miami for a bit and made a name for themselves there. Once some former associates started talking, however, it all came crashing down, not just for Chris Paciello, but for the top level five family bosses he testified against. It's time for the men to take centre stage on the dance floor and in this special edition of Men for World Pride in Sydney, that's exactly what they do. Keeping with the Pride Men theme, I've selected tracks from male artists who identify as gay, bisexual or non binary. The set kicks of with the incomparable George Michael and his mega hit song "I Want Your Sex" given a modern spin by Huffnpoof. Division 4 creates a fantastic cover of "You Don't Treat Me No Good" and Sam Smith's new track "I'm Not Here To Make Friends" is a club anthem. Darren Hayes features twice in this set, first up with his Savage Garden collaboration "I Want You" and later with "Step Into The Light". Dirty Disco features two excellent mixes for Erasure and Years & Years respectively. Magnus Carlsson released a song for Stockholm Pride with a great remix by SoundFactory and Ross Alexander covers "I Love My Radio" released in the 80's. One of my favourite male artists is Matt Zarley and his uplifting song "Somebody 4 Everybody" is brilliantly remixed by Moto Blanco. Chris Willis' hit "One Life" features here (I do love me some Chris Willis) and Tommer Mizrahi delivers two top mixes for Jason Walker and Kevin Aviance. The set closes out with the exquisite 7th Heaven remix of "Feel The Music" by Sean Ensign and an updated version of Sylvester's classic disco track "Mighty Real" mixed by Jet Boot Jack. Feel the music and feel the Men in this special World pride edition of Pride Men. Episode 82 Psychedelic Japan, Part 2 Playlist Wha Ha Ha, “On the Floor” from Wha Ha Ha (1983 Recommended Records). This group released three records in 1981, all in Japan. Recommended Records, the UK-based record maker, released this compilation of tracks taken from all three of those records. The group Wha Ha Ha ended at that point but its four principle members went on to varied musical careers. Akira Sakata is an alto saxophonist, Kiyohiko Semba is a percussionist, Mishio Ogawa is a vocalist, and Shuichi Chino is a keyboardist and electronic musician. 10:08 Merzbow, “Untitled 1” from Material Action for Two Microphone (sp) (2nd version) (1984 artist cassette). Masami Akita is one of my long-time favorite Japanese electronic/noise practitioners. He would send me cassettes back in the 1980s and I've always tried to keep up with him. Not strictly a Japanese psychedelic artist, I include him here primarily because, like some of the other artists in this podcast, he has widespread influence on other genres of Japanese electronic music. This prolific Japanese noise artist has released over 500 recordings since 1979.Recorded at Merzbau. Tape, Recorder, Synth, Effects, Kiyoshi Mizutani; Tape, Violin, Electronics, Effects, Masami Akita. Early cassette by Akita. 22:30 Yoshiaki Kinno, track 4 from unknown cassette, 1984.Japanese guitar and saxophone improviser. In the 1980's he established a cassette label featuring a wide range of improvised music. 3:32 Boredoms, “Boil Out UFO” from Boretronix 88' (1988 Mega Scum Groove Inc.). I think this is their first cassette release, going back to 1988. Boredoms (ボアダムス), alternatively known as V∞redoms, is a Japanese experimental/noise/space rock/tribal drumming band from Osaka, founded in 1986 by Yamatsuka Eye. Known for their extended jams and heavy drumming, it is remarkable that they had some mainstream success in the 1990s. Bass, Hira; Drums, EDA; Drums, Vocals, Yoshimi P-We; Guitar, Yamamotor; Music by, Boredoms; Words By, Vocals, Tibetan Bell, Effects (EQ-phasing), cassette tape manipulation, electronics, Eye. 2:18 Boredoms, “Untitled” (excerpt) from Boretronix 3 (1990 Ltd.). Another early cassette release from Yamatsuka Eye on his private label. This cassette consists of remixes of unreleased Boredoms material and fully explores the noise and rhythmic aspects of their work. This is an interesting prelude to their latter, more cohesive works. Bass, Hira; Drums, EDA; Drums, Vocals, Yoshimi P-We; Guitar, Yamamotor; Music by, Boredoms; Words By, Vocals, Effects (EQ-phasing), cassette tape manipulation, electronics, Eye. 12:01 Otomo Yoshihide, “We Insist? A) Rinko-Gun; b) x-Day” from We Insist? (1992 Sound Factory). Japanese experimental musician, turntablist and guitarist. Additional musicians on these tracks, Bass, vocals, Numata Jun; Guitar, Saito Ken-ichi; Vocals, performer (Junk), Lim Soowoong. 5:37 Omoide Hatoba, “Satellite Groove” from Kinsei (1996 Birdman). Well we guess if you've won 5 Grammys, been nominated for "Producer of the Year", engineering and producing every famous artist of his day along with running the forefront of sound and studio recording techniques and innovations it's probably hard to remember a couple of interactions with "The Cowsills" who were just struggling to stay relevant when our paths crossed twice in 1972 and 1978 ("The Cocaine Drain Album" and "Covered Wagon"). Watch us hold it together as we hear, "Uh, well no I don't remember".... "Covered Wagon" and "This Here Is A Love Song" and "Down In The Valley" was a 6-hour session at the Sound Factory in Hollywood late one week night with Val at the controls and we were thrilled. It was a great night of recording more isolated and remembered in our sparse history but buried in Vals incredible life and experiences. 100 gold and platinum albums. Val Garay is an icon and important historian for the history of rock and roll.

Louie Vega shouldn't need an introduction, but we'll do it anyways. The Bronx-born Puerto Rican artist embodies the soulful sound of New York house music, and he's been doing it since the '80s. His history features a litany of legendary names and clubs, from the Devil's Nest to his much-vaunted residency at The Sound Factory in Manhattan, and he's made music with the likes of Todd Terry, Mood II Swing and Barbara Tucker. But it's with Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez that Vega made his most cherished and influential work as the duo Masters Of Work, putting out huge singles and making house remixes for some of the most iconic names in '90s pop music. To listen Vega's discography, especially as part of Masters At Work, is to hear the evolution of house music and garage (yes, both US and UK). It's difficult to overstate the impact those '90s records had on New York and beyond, and they're still some of the most swinging, undeniable house records ever made. Just try playing a MAW Dub for a newbie and see their reaction. House music has been Vega's lifelong mission, and almost four decades in, he's still refining his craft, moving towards ever-jazzier, ever more soulful sounds. His RA Podcast shows off some of his favorite tracks from contemporaries like Mood II Swing, as well as his band Elements Of Life and a handful of new tracks from his forthcoming album, Expansions In The NYC, which aims to capture the sound of his club night of the same name. You'll hear lush live instrumentation, powerful vocals and, of course, those addictive, sometimes skippy house beats—the sound of a master at work. https://www.mixcloud.com/horatioofficial/horatio-preents-ibizaholic-radioshow-episode-52-special-guest-mix-oscar-g/ Save the best for last. I have the honour and privilege to have as guest star in my radioshow the LEGENDARY DJ AND PRODUCER , MR"DARK BEATS" himself, OSCAR G . If you were to get out a map and track the history of house music – with endless lines sprouting from New York, Chicago and Detroit to points all over the world – you'd have to make a big, red circle around Miami, Florida, and start drawing. Miami was never ground zero to a full-fledged subcultural movement. But it is where Oscar Gaetan, better known as Oscar G, has lived every day of his life. And that fact alone makes it a hub on the global underground. An award-winning songwriter, producer, and DJ, Oscar is one of dance music's brightest and most enduring stars. As part of seminal production teams Liberty City, Murk, and Funky Green Dogs, he boasts hits – Billboard chart-toppers as well as underground smashes – in every decade, every trend, and every market. “Some Lovin',” “Fired Up,” and “Dark Beat” are more than just tracks: They are moments, shared by clubbers worldwide. They're the kind of moments Oscar still creates at Space Miami, his hometown superclub, where he's been a resident DJ for a staggering eight years – coming full circle after a globetrotting career. Oscar and longtime friend and production partner Ralph Falcon grew up in a Miami enlivened by the fresh spirit of hip-hop. “Break dancing, graffiti and the music that went along with it: That's really what got me into DJ-ing in the first place,” he says. By the age of 12, he was already spinning at school dances. Oscar and Ralph started working together at the end of high school, blending the sounds of their youth with the beginnings of house, like Ten City and Blaze; and the darker Euro bands of the time, like Depeche Mode and New Order. “We were always big on doing our own sound, with our own feeling and vibe in every aspect of it; from the way we mixed things to the sounds we chose,” says Oscar. “I remember being obsessed with that for years, and then people started to listen.” The early years bore some of the work for which they're still best known, like often imitated, never duplicated vocals “Some Lovin',” “If You Really Love Someone,” and “Reach For Me” (Tribal). Upon their release in 1993, the pair became instant superstars. “Europe kind of grabbed us,” says Oscar, so they spent a good amount of time touring overseas, eventually visiting every major and minor outpost of the global dance scene, including Zouk Singapore, Ministry Of Sound London, and Stereo Montreal. “Fired Up!” (Twisted), their biggest hit ever, followed in 1996. It topped the Billboard Dance chart, and even cracked the Top 100, peaking at No. 80. They would go on to remix countless major pop artists, from Madonna to Cher to Donna Summer; and appear on mainstream outlets like MTV and Top Of The Pops. The boys also cut two complete Funky Green Dogs albums for major label MCA, “Star” (1999) and “Super California” (2001). But their own measures of success were still decidedly underground: “Once Junior Vasquez played our records at Sound Factory [in New York], we felt like we could retire, and at that point we were like 20,” says Oscar. In March 2000, Space opened in downtown Miami with Oscar as the Saturday night resident, just as the world was paying its annual visit for Winter Music Conference. The club – with its cavernous main room, pummeling German sound system and nitrogen blasts – was the talk of dance world, and the legend of Oscar's residency began to grow. The year 2003 was a big one. Oscar released the “Live @ Space” (Star 69) compilation, and won the Club World Award for “Best Resident DJ” (which he won again in 2007). Murk set a new Billboard Dance chart record, with five No. 1's in a single year: Four singles from their self-titled artist album on Tommy Boy Records, and “Dark Beat” (Twisted), tribal house's first real vocal anthem, which found its way from dance floors onto mainstream radio. “We came up with ‘Dark Beat' in about 15 minutes. Whenever things come that quickly, you know there's something to them,” says Oscar. “But we didn't think radio or anthem; we were thinking more like, ‘Oh man, Danny Tenaglia's gonna be all over this!'” In 2006, Oscar became one of Pacha New York's only non-NY-based monthly residents, strengthening his bond with his home-away-from-home, and its rich dance history. He released a second installment in the Space series in 2007, starting new relationships with Nervous Records in the U.S. and CR2 in the U.K. CR2 also snapped up the Murk catalog, and commissioned new remixes of the classic tracks, including Paul Woolford's takes on “If You Really Love Someone” and “Reach For Me.” And in 2008, after nearly two decades making music, Oscar released out his first solo album, “Innov8” (Nervous). Last year Oscar released a mixed CD “Beats” on Nervous Records and working with his Murk partner Ralph Falcon produced one of the undergrounds anthem of 2012 – Amame – which was released worldwide on Defected. He and Ralph also re-activated the seminal label Murk Records. Even though his passion for music creation is undeniable, it's in his DJ booth where Oscar feels most at home. “On the music side, I've felt pretty energized lately, because the changes in the industry really enable you to be a lot more experimental and take more chances,” he says. “But DJ-ing to me always comes first: I really believe in it as an art form. Having a residency like Space, with a regular crowd, it's the ultimate.”
Mike recalls memories from 1993. Early on Christina held the coveted position of guarding the velvet ropes for some of New York City's most famous nightclubs including Studio54, The Palladium and 1018. One of her proudest accomplishments was creating and owning one of New York City's most legendary dance clubs, The original Sound Factory on West 27th Street. She still enjoys producing events, many which benefit her favorite AIDs charities and various dog rescues.

On July 12, 2018... I released the first ever episode of Philosophy 101… 3 years later.. here we are… Philosophy family.. can you believe it?! I have 3 things to say to all of you; THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! & THANK YOU!!! There are not enough words to express the copious amounts of gratitude that I have for every single person who has supported from the start... From the team who has helped me transform Philosophy 101 into what it is today.. to anyone who has listened to every episode or just one episode.. and most importantly; the universal gratitude that I have for EVERY.. SINGLE.. House-Head that I've ever had the pleasure of having a conversation with, or just simply having shared a dance floor with you over my 29 years of existence… Seriously if you were to tell me 3 years ago, that not only will this podcast be listened to on every continent, throughout 75 different countries, & will have generated over 10K listens... Swear on my moms I would have told you; “Pass me whatever it is that you're smoking on because that sounds like some real fire shit & I want some”… And thennn... if you were to tell me that 6 months into releasing this podcast series, I would then be presented the opportunity to transform Philosophy 101 into an event series. That would not only take over some of Las Vegas' biggest nightclubs, but would enable me to headline open-close sets playing all different kinds of underground noises… And thennnnnn.. that would help to facilitate bringing Philosophy 101 back to my hometown of NYC, & most recently assist in being booked to be the headlining artist for a promenade record label's first 2021 label showcase in Los Angeles representing the Philosophy|CLV moniker... All the whilst, morphing Philosophy 101 into a DJ Collective consisting of likeminded individuals; some of whom I've known for over a decade... But were chosen not based off of how great their DJ skills are, or how well known they are, or where they have played, or how many people they can put through the door... But rather on the purest fact of; real recognize real… This music is who I am… This music has been shaping my life ever since I bought my first underground house 12” vinyl nearly 16 years ago… DJ Pierre aka The Godfather of acid house himself, once said; "Anything that starts off underground is house.. I don't care how big it gets.. if it started out underground.. then it's house!" House isn't just a type of music..it's a way of life..it's a culture..it's an ideology..and for those of us who started chasing this rabbit a long long time ago..we haven't left the rabbit hole since... This is the first Philosophy episode that I can truly say I left a piece of my soul inside of forever. Not only is this mix completely different than how I normally play... It is a beautiful, only can happen in the moment, on the fly, type of journey that explores my 3 favorite era's/decades of house... We starting off with what's closest to my heart.. the 2005-2010 golden era of NYC's tribal that I spent countless hours inside the walls of Pacha NYC, Cielo, & Asseteria listening too… Then rewinding back into the late 90s-early 2000's with that real Sound Factory era type sounds of Johnny Vicious, Jonathan Peters, Robbie Tronco, Sal Parm aka Plasmic Honey, & so on… And finally to round it out by ending off with what started it all; disco classics, original house classics/remixes/edits/reworks, & of course timeless vocals laid over a beautiful 4x4 beat... I hope you enjoy this 3 hour pilgrimage through the sounds of house as much as I did… I love you all... -Nick

Up until the last decade, New York nightlife was the standard bearer of the global underground party scene. Studio 54 and The Sound Factory were era-defining clubs and ground zero for fashion and culture movements in New York. Then came members-only establishments and scene killing bottle service of the naughts and New York nightlife was declared dead. ‘It's all moved to Brooklyn' has been the refrain, but to where exactly - Does New York currently have a thriving nightlife scene worth talking about?
Welcome back to another episode of Universal Rhythm Sessions. This week we bring you a local up and coming talent, Danny Boak. He continued promoting and paying his dues after a few years he started promoting and djing events at Pacha NYC in the Bassment, Deko and Club Abyss, NJ. The hard work was beginning to pay off and was asked to come and dj/ host the Mirf room at NYC's District36. Since the closing of D36 he has been focusing his time and energy in the studio and will be starting a new residency in April 2013 with his new team Wolfpack. Welcome back to another Universal Rhythm Session. This week we welcome...ADAM FREEMER. DJ. Producer. Sound Engineer. Not many can claim to be truly successful on "both sides of the mixer", but besides being a world renown dj and producer, Adam has worked on and engineered some of the world's finest nightclub sound systems. His skills are often requested in the studio by other producers wanting to tap into his 15+ years of music production and Pro Tools experience. Adam's maintained consistent support from some of dance music's heaviest hitters such as Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed & Victor Calderone to name just a few. After filling in for Danny Tenaglia at his now infamous “Be Yourself” party at Vinyl, New York and playing at New York staple clubs such as Twilo, Limelight and Sound Factory over 10 years ago, Adam has gone on to tour the world several times over as a dj. With a production career that now spans two decades, Adam's first major release, H2O, was released on TWISTED records back in 2002. H2O featured house legend Alan T. providing the vocal snippet to this club stomping first effort which received support from some of dance music's biggest names of the time such as Anthony Pappa, DJ Vibe, and Tom “Superchumbo” Stephan. Adam has since gone on to release many chart topping singles including Underground Baby! which achieved top 5 download status on Beatport. On the remix front, with multiple Billboard charted remixes under his belt including two #1 Billboard remixes of the legendary Yoko Ono and a long list of remixes by respected names such as DJ Chus, Cevin Fisher, D-Formation and Mistress Barbara, Adam has solidified his standing as a respected dance music producer and re-mixer. In 2008 Adam started his own label, Mecha Recordings and besides releasing his own work, the label has released remixes and singles from artists such as Lance DeSardi, D-Formation, DJ Simi and D-Unity.Across North America, from Stereo, Montreal, Ruby Skye, San Francisco and staple clubs in New York, Miami and his home town of Philadelphia, Adam has been touring as a dj for over 10 years. On a global level, the list is even longer from all over South America to Europe and throughout Asia where he recently visited Womb, Tokyo. Adam continues to evolve as a dj incorporating new sounds into his sets which have their roots in techno, house and soulful deep grooves. With a full-length remix album about to released this Summer on TWISTED and many other remix and original projects in progress, Adam's touring schedule is about to become busier then ever.As a sound engineer, Adam's knowledge spans from engineering tracks in the studio to engineering top notch nightclub audio systems. In recent years Adam's been designing and engineering sound systems around the world and has helped create a resurgence in nightlife in his home town of Philadelphia by bringing quality nightclub audio to the city as never before. He's currently working on his own nightclub project which will take prominence as the premier nightclub & sound system in Philadelphia and also be one of the best nightclub sound systems in North America. A techy feast to sink your ears in to for this months guest mix, presenting RAZE (Neil Castle) he has graced the decks at many events across the South West UK for years, his mix is proof of this guys skill in tune selection and mixing..... Enjoy! xXx DJ Raze debuted in the South West in 1993, a few months on from when he first ever touched a pair of record decks. The Plymouth Warehouse proved to be of a huge influence with Raze diligently collecting the records he had heard every week from the big names he saw. This passion and enthusiasm lead to a set playing for Speed Promotions alongside Slipmatt, and a chance encounter following this meant he also span an impromptu set at the legendary Plymouth Pavilions for long standing rave promoters 'Obsessed' From Hardcore, as the years went on, the progression into Trance followed, and Raze landed a set at 'Bossanova' (Sound Factory) and continued to play for some years before taking a short break to raise his family. Now to the present, and the mixing bug has been caught again, with Raze holding residencies for TranceFormNation (Exeter) and Liquid Pulse (Plymouth), where he has performed alongside Mark EG, M-Zone, Signum, Joey Riot, Nick The Kid, Kidd Kaos, Tek-Tonic and many more.
