And for those of you who know Nika, Nika has been on our podcast many times and so we're always thrilled when she has time to be with us. She has a masters of Theology from Dallas Seminary. She actually went to Oklahoma University, but we don't really care about that part. And she has a Doctor of Ministry degree from Northern Seminary. So she's Dr. Spaulding. But I will not call her that. I will call you Nika. Nika >> Thank you. Kay >> Nika is really sort of our go to person for hard questions and about teaching the Bible. And so today we are talking about teaching the Bible, and we're going to talk about using teaching aids in teaching the Bible. So Nika why do teachers need to use teaching aids? Nika >> Yeah, it's such a good question. And I don't know, Kay, if you've had like your philosophy of teaching develop on this. I would say for me, this is a more recent addition to how I teach the Bible, and that is—when I was a young teacher, I kind of wanted to teach all these cool, nifty things that maybe people didn't know on their own. And now I really, really just want to make the Bible stick. I want when people leave for them to remember what we talked about, for them to be able to meditate on it. And what I have found is, you know, you probably think back to your experience when you were in elementary, junior high, high school, and you think about lessons that really stuck. There's a chance that your teacher used some sort of teaching, some sort of illustration, or maybe they brought something in the classroom or something like that. I have discovered just over the years that using teaching aids, whether it's props or engaging the senses or something like that, really allows us to help the Bible stick and that's really the goal with the teaching aids. Kay >> Great. So what are what are some of the things that you do see things in the Bible that are teaching aids? Nika >> Yeah, no, absolutely. I think that's what's interesting about it is when you think about even let's say you want to teach wisdom, you go to the Book of Proverbs so often what you see from the Proverbs is they take stuff you already know, stuff from nature, stuff that you've experienced in life. And then they say, “Hey, this, this is what that's like.” So a perfect example is you might talk about honey is how the Word of God is. It's so sweet, right? And if you've ever tasted honey, especially pre modern food where we have sugar at our fingertips at all times, you kind of think about how like, am I? I'm sure in my pantry right now I can eat sugar, but in the ancient days, having that ability, honey, was a really sweet experience. So to compare that to the Bible, we see how the Bible also uses teaching as Jesus does. This in his parables all the time.

So here's the thing. I know I talk a lot about reading. It's pretty important to me. But all week I've been trying to prepare a different podcast, one NOT about the uncrackable justification for choice reading. But recently I heard from several teachers over in CHSE about thriving reading programs they had going, only to get shut down by folks who felt like reading in class was a waste of time. And then I kind of ended up in a rabbit hole, as I am wont to do. It's like researching the justification for choice reading became my guilty pleasure, sucking up all my time. I listened to audiobooks on my walks, pored over research roundups and articles at the coffee shop, hit up the hammock with my Penny Kittle, and stared and stared and stared at the growing evidence mounting in my endless Google doc of notes. The evidence is clear. The need for help for kids who don't read, don't like reading, and don't want to read is great. And yet STILL we are prioritizing reading snippets and drilling for tests to "improve" our readers' reading. I want you to have the information you need to fight. So here I am. Again. Despite my efforts to focus on something else this week. Let's dig deep. Nuclear weapons have been with us for 80 years.  There are fewer today than was the case at the height of the Cold War, but there are more countries with nukes than ever before.  Some heads of state have been, of late, threatening to use them.  If you've seen Kathryn Bigelow's recent film, “House of Dynamite,” you'll know that human psychology is the linchpin on which the entire system of nuclear deterrence rests: would the President (or Premier or whatever) exchange their capitals for others?  Trade Washington, DC for Moscow or Beijing?There is reason to be concerned about this question: The United States is planning a $1.7 trillion overhaul of its entire nuclear arsenal, designing new warheads and investing in new bombers, missiles, and submarines to carry them, all in the name of “modernization.”  It's not that the current generations of platforms and warheads won't work; it's more that Admirals, Generals and Presidents don't trust devices put into operation when they were very young and that there is a lot of money and prestige in having the latest generation of gadgets and lording that over the competing services.  Oh, and new weapons are “manlier” than the old ones.Join host Ronnie Lipschutz for a conversation with Dr. Dylan K. Spaulding a senior scientist in the Global Security Program of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics! Julia, Thom, and Anthony were supposed to record 2025's "Jingle Bell Heist" this week, but as happens sometimes - especially during this busy time of the year - life got in the way and they couldn't get their schedules to align. Emily is an Assistant Professor at MDI Biological Laboratory where she studies neurodegenerative disease-associated genes using super-resolution imaging of living, adult worms. Nate Bibaud was born in 1984 in Amesbury, Massachusetts, where he grew up skateboarding and playing goalie in hockey. After studying architecture, he moved to St. Croix to work in print and graphic design. In 2010, a car accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, with limited arm movement and no hand function. During rehab at MGH and Spaulding, he began drawing with the help of a recreational therapist. Over time, Nate gained enough shoulder strength to paint independently, experimenting with watercolor, acrylic, and oil. Since then, he has battled through paralysis, infections, a blood clot, and cancer—and now works full time as an artist.
