We're having a BABY! A vegan baby that is and this pregnancy is the 'big project' I've been teasing. I'm beyond excited to share where I've been these past few weeks, how I faired the 1st trimester, our family's feelings about birthing and raising vegan babies, and so much more. Answering your questions about cloth diapering, vegan prenatals, and criticism. Ps. While away we surpassed 1 million downloads of Live Planted. Whoa! Thanks to everyone who's listened, passed the show on, and been a part of LP, I appreciate you! Kitty Cotten is a vegan mama working to share her life and approach to simple living online. Kitty lives in a 'duel household', meaning she's vegan and her husband is not- something I get asked about frequently. Today we talk about where to start with minimalism and building a more sustainable wardrobe. Plus, positive birthing and minimalist parenting, both have been labeled as nearly 'impossible' but Kitty shows us it's not always as it seems. The idea of being stretched too thin is oh so common in our current society. Often in a non-traditional lifestyle such as veganism or zero waste we're piling more onto our plate, it takes more work and consciousness to live like this. It's almost a badge of honor to be busy, but how do we slow down, lighten our mental load? Today's episode shares 3 ways to lighten your mental load, so you can ditch the guilt and live a little lighter. After sharing lots of cooking adventures over on Instagram stories recently (oat milk yogurt anyone?) I've gotten loads of questions about how to start a cooking at home habit. Cooking can help you control your waste, ingredients, and calories, AND it can save you boatloads of money. Brittney Kane founder of Foreverland Farm, an animal sanctuary in Ohio, and I bonded over our 30 something, childless role in society. A society where women, even in 2019, are valued for their reproductive role over everything else. In today's Mother's Day Special we're discussing the female animal body, it's valuable role in animal agriculture and how a seemingly infertile sheep got Foreverland Farm going. We're officially 1 year into the life motto 'Life's Not That Serious', a motto about forgetting perfectionism, being present, and leaving behind those insecurities that aren't serving you. It's a great motto for anyone trying to live sustainably or any lifestyle that isn't 'standard'. I'll spill the raw and honest details on what's changed in the last year for me with this motto and I'm talking about why I quit zero waste the first time I tried it and how LNTS could have helped me. Jenny Welbourn of Wear I Live is someone I've been wanting to share with the podcast for a while. She's carved out a unique little section of the internet for herself where she's able to show growth, challenges, and struggles in her life including mental health, veganism, and zero waste. In today's episode, we talk veganism in real life vs. veganism online (there's totally a difference), sustainable fashion & thrifting. There's a weird thing happening on the internet, the word healthy has been redefined into something new, something almost unattainable, something #goals. Today I want to, in true Live Planted form, define healthy in practical, logical, terms and bring it back to reality. Especially as more popular vegans are quitting saying they don't 'feel healthy', this is the perfect time to talk about what healthy really means and how does it fit into your life. Andrea Sanders of Be Zero Waste Girl and I both hear the question, "What do I do with all my 'stuff' when I go zero waste?", today we'll answer that question and more. It's hard to slow down in a world where sayings like, 'money doesn't sleep,' 'hustle 24/7,' and 'sleep when I'm dead' are the norm. Today's 'Life's Not That Serious' episode focuses on fighting against the 'hustle everyday' society. We validate stress and call it working hard. But what's the toll of this 'hustle'? Life's not that serious that we need to overload ourselves with an ever increasing to-do list and growing self expectations. We're all striving for something but in the internet world the struggle or reality can sometimes get lost. We've all heard the term 'Instagram vs. reality'. So today I thought Celia Ristow of Litterless was the perfect co-host for this episode exposing the reality of what we both still purchase as we work towards making less waste and living more sustainability. The idea of zero waste isn't to deprive yourself to meet some impossible standards, it's to make conscious decisions and do your best when making purchases while staying happy and healthy. It's a statement I've seen a lot over the years, 'it's hard'. It's even one I've said myself, but making a lifestyle change is a lot more than just a challenge, it can be such a joy. It's finally here!! The sustainable period episode I've been wanting to share forever, found it's perfect guest in Polly of Green Indy Blog. As Polly puts it, conversations about menstruation are more than just talking product options, it's about awareness, education, and options. The more we discuss, the more we have language for what's happening, the more we can feel normalized, and educated on what's happening to 50% of the population. The aim of the conversation is to bring awareness to women facing stigmas across the world, as well as share more environmentally friendly product options. PLUS, getting away from the militant idea of what zero waste is and are we justifying the use of plastic with brands like Everlane and Madewell doing 'recycled plastic' clothing lines? Is this a new form of greenwashing going almost undetected in the 'low impact/ zero waste' community? Let's let the conversation flow. Converting to veganism, zero waste, or any other life change can be a big deal. Today I brought back licensed mental health therapist Casey Hill to talk about working through making big shifts in your life. We're sharing coping skills to make changes easier, why being realistic with yourself is so important, and the idea of 'holding space' as a way to work through emotions in the moment. Casey shares her new virtual therapy resource for people who are looking for a community when making a transition to veganism. This episode edges into the LNTS (Life's Not That Serious) style of episodes. Growing Vegan Virtual Support Group: Growing Vegan is an 8 week long virtual support group that is geared towards new/transitioning vegans however anyone is welcome to join! It will be held Wednesday evenings starting mid-October. Have you heard about grass fed beef? There's an image of the idyllic cows roaming green grasses that comes to mind and the messaging behind grass fed meat is one of enviromental positivity, but is it true? Today environmental scientist and Harvard Farmed Animal Law & Policy Fellow, Matthew Hayek is on to talk about his new research into the sustainability of grass fed beef. We also touch on the terms sustainable, ethical, and humane- are they marketing or reality? Is lab grown meat sustainable? And the big 'p' word, protein, even comes up in today's pod. PS. We didn't touch on the cruelty that takes place inside the factory farms, grass fed farms, and any animal raising facility in today's episode. This episode was purely focused on the environmental aspect, more to come about the cruelty aspect in the future & there's plenty of past LP pods that focus on the topic of ethics. It turns out many people are confused about the connection between self-love and being selfish, so this week I'm discussing the distinction between the two with a 'Life's Not that Serious' spin. Plus composting in your apartment, is it possible? How to handle a situation where a friend is bragging about fast fashion, not being a perfect zero waster, and how our mindset affects everything- and what we can do about it. Sure, it's fun to imagine a fully sustainable wardrobe, but this week we're talking to someone who's actually been doing it for years. Ariana of Paris To Go is on the pod sharing her knowledge of sustainable fashion. What is it and why do we need to pay attention to shopping sustainability for clothing? We're talking about why a $10 tee doesn't actually exist, the marketing and quality (or lack thereof) to keep you in the buying cycle, and why it's so expensive. Plus, answering some of your questions on eco-fashion like can it be done a budget? How do I find professional and formal wear when shopping sustainability and more. It's official, you guys requested more 'Life's Not That Serious' episodes so I'm delivering. Today, we're talking about distancing ourselves from our goals, when I first heard this it gave me a total lightbulb moment. The concept makes goals more attainable if you're consciously or subconsciously putting distance between you and something you want. Plus, a great article on how you don't owe anyone an interaction, a concept especially valid for vegans or people living a 'different' lifestyle where others have a lot of questions. And how our ability to be kind erodes when we aren't kind to ourselves. If there's something you want to hear discussed on a LNTS episode, let me know over on Instagram.
