There's a weird thing happening on the internet, the word healthy has been redefined into something new, something almost unattainable, something #goals. Today I want to, in true Live Planted form, define healthy in practical, logical, terms and bring it back to reality. Especially as more popular vegans are quitting saying they don't 'feel healthy', this is the perfect time to talk about what healthy really means and how does it fit into your life. I'd love to hear your thoughts after listening to the episode. How do you define healthy? Hippie Haven Podcast: How To Live An Ethical + Eco-Friendly Lifestyle
Hey, it's Callee and this is a special episode of the Hippie Haven Podcast! If this is your first time listening here, I release a new episode every Wednesday, where I interview experts + everyday people about living an ethical + eco-friendly lifestyle. Our top 3 most-listened-to episodes are #10 - How To Go Zero Waste with Kathryn Kellogg of GoingZeroWaste.com, #21 - Secondhand Shopping with Alyssa of Live Planted, and #16 - 12 Steps for a Waste-Free Life in 1 Year with Polly Barks of GreenIndyBlog.com. If you haven't listened to those yet, I highly recommend that you add them to your playlist, as they've got tons of great zero waste tips! Now, I've been wanting to start doing special bonus episodes as well, a bit shorter + more personal than our usual Wednesday interviews, and also unedited, so please forgive me if I mess up here or there. Some big stuff happened in the sustainability field this week that seemed like a great topic to cover in my first bonus episode! Since you're listening to my podcast, I assume you're into the zero waste movement, which means you've very likely heard the recent news about the launch of Loop. Loop is a program with the mission of eliminating the idea of waste by creating returnable, refillable packaging for common consumer items, like Coca-Cola soda, Pampers diapers, Axe Deodorant, Haagen Daaz ice cream, and dozens of other popular products. But if you've heard about Loop, you've probably also heard people talking about if it's really as good as it's being made out to be. My friends Polly of Green Indy Blog and April aka Zero Waste Dork just did an IG live today where they discussed how they felt about it, and I wanted to share my own thoughts here as well. Learn more about Loop here: https://loopstore.com/ The Hippie Haven Podcast is hosted by Callee - a zero waste activist & business owner. Formerly a translator for the US Navy, Callee was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector in 2017 following an episode of severe depression & alcoholism fueled by not living in alignment with her core values. That same year, at age 23, she started Bestowed Essentials, a handmade line of eco-friendly beauty & home products that are now stocked in over 100 stores around the US & Canada. Callee began hosting this free podcast in August 2018, as well as speaking at events and teaching educational workshops across the country, as part of her life mission to arm you with the knowledge & tools you need to spark positive change in your community. In December 2019, she opened The Hippie Haven in Rapid City, South Dakota - a zero waste retail store & community space with a little free library - the first of its kind in the state. She’ll be opening a second Hippie Haven in Salem, Oregon in Feb 2021. We talk about all things hippie, including eating vegan, reducing your trash, starting an ethical business, eco-activism, gardening, beekeeping, tiny house living, and so much more. In today's episode, I'm chatting with Alyssa of Live Planted, a popular podcast about a practical vegan lifestyle. Yesterday, she interviewed me on her podcast, where we discussed owning an ethical business, being zero waste while traveling in a van, and more about me, you should definitely go listen to that episode on the Live Planted Podcast if you haven't already, and now I'm chatting with her about fast fashion, thrift store shopping, the ethics of secondhand wool + leather, the intersection of veganism + feminism, how she applies her favorite motto "life's not that serious", and so much more. Resolutions, are they all it's cracked up to be? As great as a fresh start can be, New Year's can get overwhelming. So this week Ana Alarcon, of Ana Goes Fit, and I are sharing how we're approaching New Year's differently this year in an effort to be kinder to ourselves and create more long term healthy habits. And one of the most common questions I hear is, "how to manage 'meat eater' social situations?" So I'm breaking it down, how not to go hungry, how to have a good time, and why I attend 'meat eater' parties. Plus, Ana answers the biggest vegan FAQ of them all, "where do vegans get their protein from?" Together Amy and Billy started the Cleveland chapter of the Save Movement, the Cleveland Farmed Animal Save. They are two of the kind souls who dedicate their time to expose what the animal agriculture industry doesn't want you to see, working to connect the disconnect between animals in farms and photos and animals on our plates. Recently Amy & Billy came back from bearing witness at Anita Krajnc, of Toronto Pig Save's, final court date. This duo does all of this with love and positivity, citing a strict 'non violent' stance in their work. In this episode Amy & Billy share their experience with Anita's 'pig trial', how they work to chisel away at the idea that animals are property, and their response to Gary Francione's opinion that save movements aren't helpful to veganism. Plus they give some helpful advice on why a non violent approach can deescalate any situation. Happy 50th Episode! This episode is the '50th Episode Recap Extravaganza' where we'll be recapping 12 of the past episodes with diverse perspectives, good advice, and noteworthy outtakes. In this episode you will hear clips from Timothy of Mississippi Vegan, Mark Devries of Specieism the Movie, Caitlin Shoemaker of From My Bowl and more. We'll look back on conversations such as why vegan cooking is for everyone, how to start a self love practice, what 3 items a chef thinks you need in a vegan kitchen, why we should celebrate plants, how to become more positive and so, so much more. Honestly, I can't believe we're at 50 episodes. When I started this thing I didn't know where it was going, but I knew I had to get my voice out there and spread the 'practical vegan' message. I wanted other people to know that there is not one way to do it. You can be vegan in many different ways, they are all correct! I am so grateful to all the wonderful people who have come on and shared their knowledge and time. It's unbelievable that we're had people from all over the world on the podcast as well as people listening from all over the world. The whole point of this thing was the spread the practical vegan message and to make vegan friends. I think at episode 50 we can say it's happening! I can't wait to see where we are at episode 100 and 150! Thank you for joining me on this journey, without you we wouldn't be at 50. Want to help celebrate 50 episodes? After growing up in a meat eating household and never quite feeling right about it Ashley of Crazy Urban Vegan went vegetarian. Once Ashley realized her health woes of ulcers, uterine fibroids, acid reflux, and weight gain, needed some extra attention she decided to go vegan. She relates the switch in herself to an immediate frequency change, a good feeling she says she was instantly addicted to. Since going vegan she has lost 50 lbs, gotten off all medications, cured her ulcers, and reduced her fibroids to almost non existence. The most impressive thing about it all is that she never focused on the weight or the way her body looked, she focused on how she felt and everything else fell into place. Ashley has completely changed her life with veganism, and attributes some of that change to positive thinking. She wasn't naturally a positive thinker, but has changed into someone who practices mindful meditation, yoga, and hosts 24 hour positive thinking challenges on her Instagram. In this episode Ashley shares her thoughts on how to best transition to veganism (should you go cold turkey or not?), how she switched her thinking from a negative and worried space to a positive and loving mindset, and Ashley talks about something she manifested that is happening in her life now. Plus we talking about how 'choosing happiness' can make the biggest difference in your day. Once you listen to this episode, try out choosing happiness, tag Ashley and I (@CrazyUrbanVegan & @LivePlanted) and tell us that you're going to #choosehappiness for the day. In some ways Emilie of Emilie Eats is your typical college student, super busy, fitting in a little bit of everything, making it all work. In other ways she is not. Emilie is 20 years old running a successful vegan recipe blog. She is self aware beyond her years, noting that she has fallen into the perfectionist mindset of trying to eat perfectly 'clean'. Saying that instagram and youtube can put unrealistic body image ideas into your head. This sort of mindfulness that Emilie has, being cognizant of media influenced thinking and knowing when to step away, is inspiring. In this episode Emilie shares why she thinks veganism & minimalism go hand in hand, we talk about why people have mistaken thoughts about what a vegan body looks like, and Emilie shares her secret to eating vegan with a busy schedule. For this episode my husband Eric joins the conversation. Since we're all just voyeurs at heart, wanting to know what other people are doing, I thought I would fill you in on how we do the holidays. I didn't want to give a bunch of tips- do this, don't do that, because I already have ep28 for that. I wanted to tell you what we really do for the holiday season. We've been vegan for 4 years, we're working on our minimalism, and I'm an introvert, so we've got a lot going on. In this episode you'll get the low down on how we do gifting, parties, food, travel, and alone time. Hear about Eric's theory on baking if you're an unconfident baker, what our minimalist alternative to gift giving is (hint we're still participating), and the famous sugar cookie mystery. It was a really fun episode to make so I hope you enjoy it and get some ideas for your holiday out of it. One of the biggest myths about going vegan is that it's expensive. Well, it is simply not true. Compare the cheapest cuts of meat, such as ground round, on average it's $3 a pound and up. In contrast, dried beans cost on average $1 per pound. Rice and potatoes are both less than $1 per pound. A 10lb bag of potatoes costs $1.99 total at my grocery store, that equals 19 cents a pound. Even if you're a vegan who buys more convenient, pre-packaged goods you can still save money compared to someone who loads up on the animal goods. In this conversation we're only talking money, we're not adding in the extra factors like health care costs, irreversible environmental strains, as well as the lives of millions of animals. No matter the monetary savings, each year a vegan saves more than 100 lives. If you're still debating on going vegan because of cost, know that you can do it on a budget big or small. In this episode you'll find 4 main ways to save, including practices to put into place that help you save big. The more you practice something the more it becomes a habit, before you know it you'll be saving money all over the place. Lets continue the conversation on Twitter, if you have a money saving tip tweet it to me @LivePlanted. Everyone wants to be justified in eating french fries, onion rings, and pasta AND still lose weight. The thing is Will did just that following the Starch Solution- a whole foods, no oil, plan. (The same book that former guest High Carb Hannah lost weight from.) He went from 205lbs from 171lbs, losing the weight and keeping it off for the past few years. Will shares healthy, simple and delicious recipes on his website, Youtube, & instagram at Potato Strong. In this episode Will shares why potatoes are key in weight loss, how having a narrow focus when thinking about nutrition can have an impact on health & weight loss, & why you might not be losing weight when you feel like you're giving it 100%. Recently I went to a speech Erin was giving on veganism. One of the slides was on Paleo and it really got me thinking about the cross section between Veganism and Paleo. A lot of people qualify them both as 'fad diets' and see them as a temporary way to loose weight/become healthier/ etc. The truth is veganism is not a fad, it's a lifestyle, a whole mind set and has science behind it to prove that it not only helps your body, but also the earth and (most importantly) the animals. If vegamism is not a fad, then what is Paleo? I wanted to get to the nitty gritty of Paleo today-what is it? What is the true information on the health aspect? In this episode we break down the 'anti-nutrient' foods that Paleo restricts, why people loose weight, why people feel better, and the truth behind what Paleo does to your body and the earth. As icing on the cake, her tone, on her blog and in this conversation, makes you feel like you're talking to a long lost friend. We also share how to get past the hangups, registered nurse and dietitian Erin brings some nutritional advice for those hurdles. First we talk about how to not fall for the vegan hype... don't believe people when you hear "you'll NEVER get a cold" as a vegan or "you will lose a ton of weight!" while some things may be true for some people, we don't want folks to get discouraged if they don't see x,y,z outcome. Veganism is much more than a diet or fad, and it's important to remember the main reasons to go vegan. We were so excited to talk to Mark Devries, Producer and Director of Speciesism, The Movie (2013). We talk to him about the everyday pain farmed animals feel, if he wishes he could re-enter the Matrix, when and how to make the comparison to slavery and the holocaust, and much more. Before talking to Mark, Sarah reads an article, My first day at the slaughterhouse (http://www.veganaustralia.org.au/my_first_day_at_work_at_the_slaughterhouse).
