This week on Everything You Didn't Know About Herbalism, we're releasing a very special episode in acknowledgment of the annual Buy Nothing Day movement with the author, influencer, and Founder of Going Zero Waste, Kathryn Kellogg. Listen in as Kathryn and Thomas discuss what it truly means to be zero-waste, the problem with mass consumerism and its negative effects on environmental and mental health, and the importance and impact of the ever-growing Buy Nothing Day movement. Stay tuned next week for part two of this series where we are joined by another esteemed leader within the zero-waste lifestyle movement! As always, we thank you for joining us on another botanical adventure and are honored to have you tag along with us on this ride. Remember, we want to hear from you! Your questions, ideas, and who you want to hear from are invaluable to our podcast. Please send us an email at podcast@mountainroseherbs.com to let us know what solutions we should uncover next within the vast world of herbalism.  What is Buy Nothing Day you ask? Well, please allow us to explain!  Buy Nothing Day is our annually celebrated tradition in protest of Black Friday. In making this stand, we are joining tens of thousands of people across 65 nations for an international day of protest against mass consumerism and the throw-away culture that accompanies it. The Buy Nothing Movement has been growing since 1992 as overconsumption continues to consume our precious natural resources faster than we can replace them, putting our planet in real jeopardy. If you visit our website today, you will see that our entire website is blacked out in protest of Black Friday. Instead, we hope you will spend the day with your family and friends, sharing acts of kindness, discovering new zero-waste lifestyle tips from the Going Zero Waste Blog, listening to your favorite podcast (bonus points if it's this one!), or better yet, all of the above! This is a day to reach for meaning in our lives instead of stuff, and we thank you all for being part of the solution to reestablish a symbiotic relationship with the planet we call home. So please, do not shop with us today Friday, November 29th, 2024. Learn more about Kathryn and Going Zero Waste below!

When your phone or tablet or computer starts acting weird or gets glitchy, the conventional wisdom is to reboot. In other words, turn it off and on again. And usually, the recommendation is to turn it off for at least 10 seconds before turning it back on. Why 10 seconds? Is it really that important? Listen as I reveal the answer. https://www.howtogeek.com/165110/do-i-really-have-to-unplug-my-cable-modem-for-at-least-10-seconds/ So much food gets wasted – especially in the United States. Specifically, 40% of all food in the US goes to waste! How can that be? What's the problem? There are a lot of factors from the size of your fridge to the demand for “perfect” produce. Yet there is a lot we can all do to help solve the problem with very little effort – and you will save a lot of money in the process. Here to explain how is Kathryn Kellogg, owner and founder of https://www.goingzerowaste.com and author of the book 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste (https://amzn.to/3yfHSMV). Insects are an almost constant companion in the summer. Yet most of us don't know much about them other than the fact that they are annoying. There are millions of species of insects. They travel all over the world. Do they do the world any good? What's the difference between an insect and a bug? How long do they live? Why should we care about them? All of those questions and more are tackled by my guest Steve Nicholls, an Emmy award winning producer and director of acclaimed wildlife documentaries and author of the book, Alien Worlds: How Insects Conquered the Earth, and Why Their Fate Will Determine Our Future (https://amzn.to/4d1M1mP). It may not be practical, but taking an afternoon nap might just do you a world of good and make you smarter. Listen as I explain the benefits of a short afternoon snooze. https://www.trinityhealthofne.org/about-us/blog/midday-nap-could-leave-you-smarter-study Learn more about your ad choices. Everyday Rockstar (0:00:00)Lisa and Richie feature this week's Everyday Rockstar. We want to feature you! You can nominate yourself or someone you love by emailing thelisashow@byu.edu with “Everyday Rockstar” in the subject line.  How our Diets Affect the Environment (0:04:31)We Americans can sometimes be wasteful with our food. According to the USDA, it's been estimated that we waste about 40% of our national food supply every year, which equals out to about 133 billion pounds of food. You may be thinking, so what if some of my food goes to waste? I eat most of it! But it can have some serious environmental impacts. Joining us today is Kathryn Kellogg, founder of lifestyle website Going Zero Waste, to discuss how we can be more eco-friendly in our food consumption.  Turning the Tide on Ocean Loss (0:14:10)One place has recently become home to over five trillion pieces of plastic, but it's not a recycling plant, or even a landfill. It's the ocean. Our oceans hold some of our most valuable resources, and yet, each year they get a little closer to destruction due to pollution, overfishing, and the extinction of marine life. It's hard to feel like you're able to make a difference when you're just one person and the ocean is thousands of miles wide and thousands of feet deep. So we invited Cristina Mittermeier, a conservation photographer, often featured on National Geographic, and one of the founders of SeaLegacy. She joins us to share her insights into how we can help save our oceans.  Fighting for Forests (0:26:19)The rate of deforestation is shocking—we're losing approximately 27 soccer fields of forest per minute, which adds up to 18.7 MILLION acres of forested land lost each year. I feel like the importance of our planet's forests is something we all kinda get, but it's a hard concept for me to fully wrap my brain around. This is an important discussion for us to have, because if we don't truly understand a problem that's this big, why would we feel motivated to help? To help, we've invited Kerry Cesareo onto the show to answer our questions today. Kerry is the Senior Vice President of the World Wildlife Fund's Forest department .  The Science of Climate Change (0:34:57)Whenever you hear someone talk about “Climate Change” you might wonder if it's actually as dire as they say. You've heard people argue both sides on YouTube and the news. You've heard multiple opinions about how severe the problem is. And you've always heard people reference “scientific experts”, but who are these so-called climate experts and what do they really have to say about all of this? Well, allow us to introduce you to one. Dr. Michael Mann is a distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State and the author of several books on climate change. His work has been a vital part in proving the severity of the earth's rising temperature to people and politicians since 2001.  Enjoying the Environment (0:44:33)We all care about climate change in different degrees. Maybe you're doing everything you can to help preserve our planet but are struggling to get your friends on board. Or maybe you love the earth but have never felt motivated to get off the sideline and actually make changes. So, if the science and facts we read about aren't enough to change anyone's behavior towards the environment, what will? Maybe the key is to spend more time in the nature we are trying to save. Joining us today is Michael Brune, the executive director for the Sierra Club . The Sierra Club is the most influential grassroots, environmental organization in the United States, and they motivate people to get outside and enjoy the benefits of nature.  Helping Animal Shelters (0:50:38)While our pets are enjoying the extra attention from everyone being home so often right now, there are many pets that don't have a home that are requiring some extra attention. Many animal shelters have had to close their doors right now, but that doesn't mean that the animals they're housing have stopped needing help. So, what can we do to help out our furry friends? Here to share some of her tips with us, is Holly Sizemore, Chief Mission Officer of the Best Friends Animal Society.  Finances in Marriage (1:09:26)One of the top stressors that contributes to divorce today is finances. Dealing with debt and other financial difficulties puts a strain on marriages and leads to a lot of blaming rather than problem-solving. With this looming fact in the air, we wanted go get some expert advice on what couples can do better when handling money so they can eliminate stress and keep their marriages together. Our next guest, Rachel Cruze, is a #1 New York Times best-selling author and host of The Rachel Cruze Show where she helps people learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She joins us today to talk about how we can improve our finances for the sake of our marriages.  Home Before Dark (1:28:37)As we continue to be encouraged to social distance, it feels like we are in constant need of new shows to binge. Finding appropriate and uplifting programs that the whole family can sit down and enjoy together can be challenging. Luckily, Apple TV+ just released a family-friendly mystery thriller called “ Home Before Dark ” that we can stream now. Here to tell us all about this new show is Brooklyn Prince and Jim Sturgess. Music and Emotional Regulation  (0:00:00) Is music only for our ears? According to many decades of research, music can be used as a powerful emotional regulation tool. Sounds are a large part of how we perceive the world, so how do we take control of what we listen to and use it to our advantage as a coping mechanism? Genote Lab, an organization dedicated to music therapy, has set out to discover the effect of music structure on emotional responses. We are joined by Dr. Massimiliano Frani, a composer, pianist, and music pedagogue who founded the  Genote Lab.  Running a Business with your Spouse  (0:17:18) Alysha Milligan, the CMO of  Legacy Fables, a choose-your-own-adventure style game studio and online store, joins us to talk about what it's like to work with your spouse. She and her husband started the company this year, and we've invited her here to talk to us about how to be a full-time employee as well as a wife and mother.  Red Flags with Job Offers  (0:34:01) Imagine this: You're heading in to work on your first day at your dream job. You're nervous, but you're too excited to let the nerves ruin your mood. You walk into the doors, get to work, and it doesn't take long before you realize that this job is nothing like what you thought it would be. Where did you go wrong? How could you have known it would be so different? What could you have done differently?  Josh Doody, salary negotiation coach and expert in job interview strategy, joins us to share how we can identify red flags in job offers and make sure we get the job that we want.  Recycling Week  (0:50:34) We all know it's important to recycle, and we want to recycle--but did you know that there's a wrong way to do it? That when you put something in your recycling bin there's a chance you might be doing more harm than good? A new study shows that putting trash in recycling bins costs the US recycling system more than $300 million dollars each year. Now we don't want to discourage anyone from recycling—so in honor of American Recycling Week we've got Keefe Harrison, CEO of the  Recycling Partnership here to tell us how we can make a difference with our trash. Recycling Myths  (1:00:54) It's 2019, and we still have questions about recycling. Will it save the planet or is it lulling us into a false sense of complacency? And, are we even doing it right? Kathryn Kellogg is the founder of  Going Zero Waste and author of  “101 Ways to Go Zero Waste.” She's also the spokesperson for National Geographic on plastic-free living. She joins us to talk about recycling myths.   Customer Service Problems  (1:17:27) You've been on the phone for at least 45 minutes, and you've heard the same elevator music loop at least 100 times. It's almost not even worth it to wait and talk to someone – you know another machine will probably answer again this time and redirect you. It's just so frustrating! Why is customer service so bad these days?  Amas Tenumah is a customer service expert and owner of a consultancy that helps companies improve their employee and customer experience. So, whether you're the customer or the business owner, he has some helpful things to tell you. Smart Garages  (1:33:42) We have smartphones, smart TVs, and smart cars, but have you heard of smart garages? Making your garage smart could actually help ensure that you receive your packages this holiday season.  But what does having a smart garage entail?  Director of Delivery Tyler Leczuk and mother/daughter home renovation duo  Karen Laine and Mina Starsiak are with us to tell us everything we need to know about the benefits of smart garages.

Hey, it's Callee and this is a special episode of the Hippie Haven Podcast! If this is your first time listening here, I release a new episode every Wednesday, where I interview experts + everyday people about living an ethical + eco-friendly lifestyle. Our top 3 most-listened-to episodes are #10 - How To Go Zero Waste with Kathryn Kellogg of GoingZeroWaste.com, #21 - Secondhand Shopping with Alyssa of Live Planted, and #16 - 12 Steps for a Waste-Free Life in 1 Year with Polly Barks of GreenIndyBlog.com. If you haven't listened to those yet, I highly recommend that you add them to your playlist, as they've got tons of great zero waste tips! Now, I've been wanting to start doing special bonus episodes as well, a bit shorter + more personal than our usual Wednesday interviews, and also unedited, so please forgive me if I mess up here or there. Some big stuff happened in the sustainability field this week that seemed like a great topic to cover in my first bonus episode! Since you're listening to my podcast, I assume you're into the zero waste movement, which means you've very likely heard the recent news about the launch of Loop. Loop is a program with the mission of eliminating the idea of waste by creating returnable, refillable packaging for common consumer items, like Coca-Cola soda, Pampers diapers, Axe Deodorant, Haagen Daaz ice cream, and dozens of other popular products. But if you've heard about Loop, you've probably also heard people talking about if it's really as good as it's being made out to be. My friends Polly of Green Indy Blog and April aka Zero Waste Dork just did an IG live today where they discussed how they felt about it, and I wanted to share my own thoughts here as well. Learn more about Loop here: https://loopstore.com/ The Hippie Haven Podcast is hosted by Callee - a zero waste activist & business owner. Formerly a translator for the US Navy, Callee was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector in 2017 following an episode of severe depression & alcoholism fueled by not living in alignment with her core values. That same year, at age 23, she started Bestowed Essentials, a handmade line of eco-friendly beauty & home products that are now stocked in over 100 stores around the US & Canada. Callee began hosting this free podcast in August 2018, as well as speaking at events and teaching educational workshops across the country, as part of her life mission to arm you with the knowledge & tools you need to spark positive change in your community. After exploring our wasteful past and the reality of today's trash challenge, Australian journalist Alexandra Spring asks if we are on the tipping point of a rubbish free future. Alexandra joins blogger Kathryn Kellogg to find out more about San Francisco's growing zero waste ambitions. Encased in one single mason jar, Kathryn describes the tiny amount of waste she created over two years and how living without a trace has changed her life. Then, Alexandra meets the inventor Veena Sahajwalla, who shares her belief that we should consider our rubbish to be a resource for the future. As Alex discovers, this attitude and Veena's engineering skills have stopped millions of tyres from ending up in rubbish dumps, and could lead to cities around the world being built from recycled materials. In the past few months, I have interviewed over 16 amazing guests. I have personally learned so much from each of them, they all shared some great advice for all you crazy birds and I thought it well to give you a little recap on a few of them for today’s top tip Thursday. If you want to see some of the highlights of the episodes and recap on each guest, you would be able to do so in the show notes of each episode on our website MamaEarthTalk.com Episode Highlights Bea Johnson  (http://mamaearthtalk.com/beajohnson/) Learn to say no. Max La Manna (http://mamaearthtalk.com/maxlamanna/) Find a way to compost, reuse your food scraps as much as you can. Your leftovers, if you have leftovers or food that you want to throw away maybe there is somebody less fortunate that wants the food. Find another purpose for your food. If you can not compost it then see if you can give it to someone else. Kathryn Kellogg (http://mamaearthtalk.com/kathrynkellogg/) Really start to ask yourself questions. I always say, embrace your inner three-year-old. Elena Kinane (http://mamaearthtalk.com/elenakinane/) Consumers are very powerful and we need to be aware of that and your decision, every decision that you make count and inform yourself, be an informed consumer.  Don’t believe what people tell you. Double check, cross-check.  Marita Peters (http://mamaearthtalk.com/maritapeters/) Pick one thing that you would like to change and then just stick with that and see how that makes you feel and ones you got the hang of that automatically it will lead you to the next.  Dina Mustafa (http://mamaearthtalk.com/dinamustafa/) I would suggest go out and find one nice thing around you and just talk about it. Nice thing when it comes to an event when it comes to you found a recycling bin in your area. Find something positive. Key Take Away“Pick one thing that you would like to change and then just stick with that and see how that makes you feel and ones you got the hang of that automatically it will lead you to the next. “ There are so many different things that we would be able to do in our daily life that will allow us to live more sustainable, however, we are all different. What might be something that you view as wasteful could be the only source of food, water or hygiene products that some people have access too? Therefore start with one change that you feel you would be able to manage and that will be the start of your journey. The most import thing is to do this at your own piece and with what you feel comfortable. Living a more sustainable life is a journey and not a race.

Our guest today is a professional actor, the founder of the leading zero waste living blog, Going Zero Waste.com. She is also a spoke person for National Geographic’s Planet or Plastic campaign. Crazy birds, without any further ado, I would like to welcome, Kathryn Kellogg. Episode Highlights[00:19] How did your sustainable journey start? [03:00] When we talk about living a zero waste lifestyle, what exactly does that mean? [03:03] The simple definition is to send nothing to landfill, but the more complex definition, the one that I really like is to completely wright waste out of existence. [03:32] The goal with a zero waste lifestyle is to recycle less and not to recycle more. [04:08] How Kathryn’s GoingZeroWaste.Com blog start. [04:40] Halloween treats (https://www.goingzerowaste.com/blog/eco-friendly-halloween-treats-for-trick-or-treaters?rq=halloween) [05:24] Love a Lonely Banana: A Song About Food Waste. [08:29] I recommend to people to start with the big 4 and they are, say no to straws, bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store. Produce bags too and then to bring a full reusable water bottle with you whenever you go out and then the last one is to say no to coffee cups. [09:58] Planet or Plastic (https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/planetorplastic/) [11:43] The photographer Randy Olsen (https://www.instagram.com/randyolson/?hl=en) was actually on this assignment for two years. [13:41] Release of Kathryn’s new book 101 Ways to go Zero Waste (https://www.amazon.com/101-Ways-Go-Zero-Waste/dp/1682683311/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1539321616&sr=8-1&keywords=kathryn+kellogg) . [15:41] What has been one of your most important decisions that you have made around mama earth? I feel like every decision that we make is very important and I think that some of the traps that people fall into are feeling like one person and that the small things don’t make a difference but really the small things, when they are done over a really really long period of time, are some of the most impactful things that you can do. Final Five1.What is one social media account that you follow?   (https://www.instagram.com/thegirlgonegreen/?hl=en) (https://www.instagram.com/snapshotsofsimplicity/?hl=en) (https://www.instagram.com/litterless/?hl=en) 2.What is your hope for mama earth going forward?  I just really, really hope that people will learn to see that connection.  3.What advise can you give our crazy birds this week to help out mama earth?  Really start to ask yourself questions. I always say, embrace your inner three-year-old.  4.What is one sustainability fact that you like to use in a room with people not yet on a sustainability journey?  [20:15] The water footprint for all the items we use is just crazy. It takes 3 litres of water to make one litre of bottled water. It takes 37 gallons of water to make a roll of toilet paper. It takes 8 gallons of water to make a paper plate  5.Where can people find you?   (https://www.facebook.com/goingzerowaste/) (https://www.instagram.com/going.zero.waste/) (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM_g2f3EWOV-OEhG7cG_Lew) (https://www.goingzerowaste.com/) (https://twitter.com/goingzerowaste) Key Take Away“ Really start to ask yourself questions. I always say, embrace your inner three-year-old. “ Question everything! Find out where your clothing is made, what is the process, where is the fabric from, who is the farmer that grows your food? It is only when we start questioning items in our life that we realise that not everything presented as good is always good and that you need to be able to make those conclusions for yourself based on real facts rather than marketing campaigns influencing our decisions without doing our research to confirm.

Today we are going to have a look at a few people that I find very inspiring. When I first started with my sustainable journey, I found it very intimidating. There were so many things that I was learning and at times the more I learned, the more frustrated I got. There was a lot that I did not know and wondered about. I would look at the plastic packaging and wonder if it can be recycled, how do I recycle it, do I need to wash it before it goes into the recycle bin? How bad is the plastic for my health? I would hear about ethical clothing and start researching ethical clothing stores near me and then realise I do not even know what ethical clothing was. After reading the ingredients of our current cleaning materials and looking into what they are and the effects they have on us as well as the environment I was shocked. I found a few easy recipes for making my cleaning materials (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWpx3cvHdI0&t=11s)  and man was I proud of myself when I mixed my first kitchen cleaner, and it smelled amazing and worked very well. There were times that it seemed easy and then other times where I thought I had to transform our entire house into a minimalistic, plastic-free eco-friendly haven overnight. If you are listening to this and you too feel overwhelmed, not sure how or where to start or continue your journey, hang on there, there is hope. Firstly you do not have to start by doing everything at ones. This might be very hard and might discourage you to continue with the journey. Episode Highlights[02:47] I also realise that I do not have to do everything overnight or on my own, but rather to embrace this as a journey and take it step by step. [03:13] Rob Greenfield (http://robgreenfield.tv/) . Rob is an adventurer, environmental activist, humanitarian and a dude making a difference. He leads by example to create a more sustainable world. [03:47] He cycled across the US twice on his bamboo bicycle spreading his sustainable message across the US and have recently launched a book, Dude Making a Difference. 04: 00Rob also wore his trash for 30 days in New York, and he was the inspiration behind Marita Peters and me starting our WasteMeNot campaign in the UAE with his wonderful support. He is for sure a dude making a difference for Mama Earth. [04:18] Bea Johnson (https://zerowastehome.com/) , Bea is the woman behind Zero Waste Home a blog that turned into a best selling book. She and her family adopted a Zero Waste lifestyle in 2008, which changed their life for the better as they now lead more meaningful lives based on experiences instead of stuff. [04:42] One of the guidelines that she proposes is for people to follow 5’R Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot and only in that order. [05:18] She owns to only 15 items, and from these 15 items, she can create 50 different looks. [05:52] Going Zero Waste’s Kathryn Kellogg (https://www.goingzerowaste.com/) . Kathryn’s zero waste journey started when doctors discovered tumours in her breast after suffering from a lot of pain. Thankfully, everything was benign, but they did not recommend removing it as there was a good chance that it would grow back, so she had to live with the pain. [06:22] After moving to California, she was shocked at the amount of plastic in her area and realised that it is not only bad for her health but also the health of our planet. [06:46] She believes that small actions done by hundreds of thousands of people will change the world. You don’t have to be perfect to make a difference, you just have to try. [07:04] If you have any sustainability questions please do hesitate to let me know and I will try my best to help wherever I can. Happy Halloween everyone! I thought we could start the show today in Planet Money style with two numbers, 4.4 and zero. I’ll give you a second to guess their significance. Alright, ready?    If you said that 4.4 is the average number of pounds that we Americans produce as waste on a daily basis, you’d be correct. Kinda scary isn’t it?    As for zero, that’s the average amount of waste that Kathryn Kellogg (@goingzerowaste) produces annually!   Kathryn is part of something called the Zero Waste Movement. It’s something that, frankly, I didn’t know was possible until very recently.    I was curious to talk with Kathryn about how she’s able to live without producing trash. Does it mean living in a hut somewhere and growing all your own food? It turns out that’s not the case.    Kathryn was able to break it down in a way that I found to be really accessible and applicable. It got me thinking differently about the things that I purchase and consume and I’ve even made some changes, (composting is the big one), that I’m really enjoying.    This conversation really shifted what I thought was possible and left me feeling more empowered as an individual. I hope you enjoy it and if you decide to make any changes of you’re own, I’d love to hear about them!    Let me know on twitter @lifedonediffrnt.
