Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Jackie shares her inspiring journey of earning the Girl Scout Gold Award through her project titled "Single-Use Less Plastic." She discusses her advocacy against single-use plastic pollution, highlighting the importance of public policy, education, and art in driving change. Jackie reflects on how the COVID-19 lockdown prompted her to notice the overwhelming amount of plastic waste generated by her family, leading her to participate in the Plastic Free July challenge. She created an art curriculum inspired by artist Aurora Robson, teaching students to make collages from plastic debris. Jackie also founded her school's environmental club, where she organized assemblies and engaged with local officials to promote legislation against plastic straws. Throughout the episode, Jackie shares the challenges she faced during the project, including the transition to virtual learning, and the valuable lessons she learned about self-expression and advocacy. She discusses her current endeavors as an art and design major at the University of Michigan, where she has launched her clothing brand, Vinny, which focuses on environmental themes and donates a portion of profits to conservation efforts. Listeners will gain insights into the Gold Award process, the importance of creating a website for projects, and the impact of Girl Scout experiences on personal growth. Jackie encourages future Gold Award candidates to pursue their passions and reach out to others for support. More About Jacqueline: Jacqueline Vinson, 13 year Girl Scout earned her Gold Award through raising awareness of the environmental hazards of single use plastic and how we can take environmental action in our communities. Through her extensive work interviewing New York Council Members and artists, designing a curriculum and petitioning, she received the Girl Scouts of Greater New York Carmen Dubroc Scholarship in 2023. Jackie's project made a difference in her community by raising awareness of Bill A90A, a law, banning plastic straws in NYC restaurants. She also successfully petitioned to end the use of plastic cutlery and plates in her school cafeteria. As a high school senior, her environmental art won a Scholastic Art and Writing Gold Key for her portfolio, “Single-Use Less Plastics”. She now studies Art and Design at the University of Michigan where she has continued to make environmental art. This summer, She started her own naturalist streetwear company, “VinNy”, selling shirts with her captivating geometric designs of nature and birds. VinNY's aim is to connect urban life to the natural world, and 10% of the profits go to urban environmental conservation organizations including the NYC Bird Alliance.   https://singleuselessplastic.com https://www.vinnylabel.com   Key Takeaways from this episode: Advocacy against single-use plastics through art and education. The importance of community engagement and public policy. Personal growth and self-expression through creative projects.

Diana Condylas is a community connector, food lover, plant lover and plastic activist. Growing up in a multicultural family, she was used to herbs being used medicinally and in cooking.  She practiced as a naturopath, herbalist, nutritionist and massage therapist for 12 years until having babies. Permaculture came into her life in Sydney in 2007 and transformed how she saw and processed the world. In 2010, Diana returned to Townsville after a few years away and founded the Food for Thought - Townsville community, with an intention of finding her tribe, successfully.  With an active Facebook group and gatherings of people sharing meals and produce, as well as workshops, speakers and movie screenings, she loved the connections made between members of the community that have rippled out beyond Townsville.  As of 2020, Diana has been the Project Coordinator for NFP Boomerang Alliance's Plastic Free Places NQ (formerly known as Plastic Free Townsville), assisting local takeaway hospitality businesses, events and organisations to eliminate over 1.5 million pieces of single-use plastic cups, lids and other packaging. She wants her children to be healthy, enjoy and care for the world, and understand that we all need to minimise our impact to make it fair for everyone.  She recently won People's Choice in a vegan sausage roll bake off and loves picking fresh mint from her garden and making it into ‘aguita de menta' tea as a pause and a tonic. Takeaways: Permaculture is a versatile design system that can be applied to all aspects of life. Plants and herbalism can be integrated into daily life, even without a garden. Lemon balm is a versatile and nourishing herb that can be used for various health benefits. Plastic Free Places NQ helps businesses and events eliminate single-use plastics and transition to reusable solutions. Circularity and reusable solutions are vital in reducing plastic pollution. Plastic Free July is a global movement encouraging individuals and organisations to reduce plastic consumption. Consumer awareness and behaviour change are crucial to eliminating single-use plastics. The Plastic Free Places program is a resource for finding plastic-free businesses and events. Using renewable resources, such as banana leaves and papaya stems, can be an alternative to plastic plates and straws. Every small action contributes to a cleaner and healthier world. Transitioning to a Plastic-Free Lifestyle Permaculture is a great design system that's inclusive and collaborative and that whole repurposing and not wasting. "Share Waste" is a global program connecting people with scraps to share. It's that embedded energy for a single-use item is something that we don't think about in the same way as when we throw something away." It is currently the middle of July, or as we at REV like to celebrate, Plastic Free July, where we look for solutions and alternatives to this highly polluting material. I could not think of a better or more inspiring guest to bring on to speak to us about how we rid ourselves of fossil fuel derived plastics and into a much more beautiful, cleaner world, than Julia Marsh, co-founder of Sway, which harnesses the power of seaweed to create home compostable replacements for plastic.  We cannot wait to get into this conversation that spans plastic free innovation, community and creativity with Julia who is truly one of the most articulate speakers on the subject we've ever been privileged to chat to, but first I want to say a quick merci to today's sponsor - Seed.  Since our collaboration with Zach Bush and Farmer's Footprint, I have been focusing a lot on the connection of a healthy microbiome as it relates to the food we eat and time spent connecting to the earth, but for extra support in my routine I turn to Seed. Seed's DS-01® Daily Synbiotic is a broad-spectrum probiotic and prebiotic for whole-body benefits including gut, skin, and heart health. As I am really focused on my gut health through eating as close to the source and soil as possible, Seed's additional benefits for digestive and whole body health really complete my routine for a thriving body from the inside out. - Cora Hilts Learn more about seed's probiotics and get 25% off your first order with the code REVE25 below: https://seed.com/daily-synbiotic?utm_source=reveenvert&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=25p&promo_code=REVE25&utm_source=Discount+Email+Feb+2020&utm_campaign=c20baa78e0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_02_26_01_45_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_9758eff4c2-c20baa78e0-107229021&mc_cid=c20baa78e0&mc_eid=198ddb6d27 So now a bit more about our guest today, Julia Marsh of Sway.  Seaweed is the foundation of all Sway products, which mimic the compelling qualities of plastic without the downsides. Utilizing the natural polymers abundant in seaweed, they are able to optimize and scale the solutions nature has already given us. While traditional plastics contribute to climate change at every step of their toxic existence, Sway materials are made with process in mind. Sway sources responsibly cultivated, ocean-farmed seaweed grown in harmony with the ocean. They use a diverse set of red and brown seaweeds from around the world as the base of their packaging technology. Sway works exclusively with suppliers who provide dignified employment to farmers, meaning fair wages and good treatment. They are hard at work to support and help scale up suppliers for whom impact is the number one priority, such as supporting the transition to climate-resilient coastal economies with indigenous communities around the world and lobster fishermen here in Maine. We actually learned of Sway through their work with Atlantic Sea Farms, an incredible female owned cooperative that is helping to mainstream kelp farming as a sustainable solution to food, packaging and beauty issues whilst preserving our oceans and drawing carbon down. More on them to come but for now, I can't wait to get into this deep dive with Julia in honour of Plastic Free July and we hope you are all as inspired as I am to know that we do have solutions in the world, solutions that can even be regenerative in their nature, if we just believe in our own creativity and have faith in our ideas.

By Selva Ozelli It is Plastic Free July. The campaign originated in Australia to draw attention to the global problem of plastic waste, resulting in the world's first Plastic Treaty that is still being negotiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastics Pollution. "The treaty presents a crucial opportunity to tackle plastic pollution from a fresh perspective and adopt innovative problem-solving methods. We are hopeful that the treaty will introduce novel solutions and align policies that have proven effective" explained Betsy Bowers, Executive Director of the Global EPS Sustainability Alliance (GESA). The Impact of Plastic Waste on Nature Plastic pollution is causing serious problems for animals, nature, and people's health. Drawing attention to this are several environmental artists with physical and digital art shows around the world. These artists during the fall will also be part of Climate Week NY's Pink and Blue Art Show held at Howland Cultural Center Beacon, NY from Aug 10 to Sep 29, 2024. 1. UN Ocean Decade Tides of Change Waves of Hope Art Show at Art on the Ave NYC at Fulton Center New York City - April 1 to July 6, 2024 Internationally acclaimed photographers Ian Hutton from the Lord Howe Island Australia, Zinnia Gutowski from the Philippines/US, and Alfons Rodriguez from Spain and award winning oil painters Selva Ozelli from the US Semine Hazar, Fatma Kadir and Ihan Sayin from Turkiye draw attention to the impact of plastic pollution on sea slugs, water birds and whales with their work on exhibit to the public at Fulton Center New York. Waves & Tides According to a study by Alexander L. Bond , Ian Hutton and Jennifer L. Lavers plastic production and pollution of the environment is rising rapidly and outpacing current mitigation measures. The temporal changes in the amount and composition of plastic in boluses from Flesh-footed Shearwaters during 2002-2020 showed a generally decreasing pattern from 2002 to 2015 and increasing again to 2020 which suggests shearwater boluses to be a low-effort, high-statistical power monitoring tool for quantifying progress against environmental policies in Australia. How plastic litter is killing wildlife on Lord Howe Island by Ian Hutton and Jennifer L. Lavers: 1. Healing Hudson Art Show by Selva Ozelli for the Putnam History Museum Coldspring, NY June 8 to Sep 30, 2024 Artist Selva Ozelli with her Healing Hudson Art Show for Putnam History Museum draws attention to the impact of plastic pollution on sea/harbor animals who live in the Hudson River and often eat microplastics which contains toxic chemicals, that can increase the chance of disease and affect reproduction. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries marine plastic debris also entangles at least 260 marine species, including marine mammals, sea turtles, and seabirds so if you see a sea animal strangled in plastic let NOAA Fisheries know. Plastics have become so embedded in our society they can be hard to avoid, but with some simple swaps you can make a big impact on reducing plastic pollution. Today I'll share my top ten swaps and dig into the current state of plastic pollution. Takeaways Plastic pollution is a major crisis caused by the widespread use of plastics. Plastics do not biodegrade and break down into smaller pieces, polluting the environment. Plastics contain toxic chemicals that can harm wildlife and pose health risks to humans. To address the plastic pollution crisis, we need to reduce plastic consumption, improve recycling rates, and innovate on plastic recycling. Those votes are compiled at the end of the year to create the Celtic Top 20, your pick of the best music of the year. I don't just make the podcast. I'm a fan of it too. So here is another favorite from recent episodes. 6:36 - Ed Miller “More Than Just a Dram” from Lolander From Irish & Celtic Music Podcast #660: Drowsy Dancing Bear 10:56 - THE STORY OF BUTTERCUP'S LAMENT I wrote this song in December 2000. It began with the idea of a woman who's True Love was lost at sea. But as the story developed, it reminded me of Buttercup's "True Love"--Wesley--in the cult classic, "The Princess Bride"a, so I named it after her. It's a sad, but beautiful song, sung great a cappella or as I play it, with a solo autoharp. 15:24 - Marc Gunn “Buttercup's Lament” from Soul of Harper Buttercup's Lament lyrics and music by Marc Gunn There's a leaf on a tree and it's swaying And a girl 'neath the tree tears in her eyes. There's a wolf on the run saying 'Where have ye gone?' 'Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine.' Oh wind, cruel wind, bring and end, an end To the storm that took me love afore his time Oh wind, cruel wind, bring and end, an end I long for him. Will ye bring my true love back to me side There's a puddle on the ground and it's growing And a girl above the pond tears in her eyes There's a fox on the run saying 'Where have ye gone?' 'Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine.' There's a woman on the run saying, 'Where have ye gone? Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine? Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine? Oh where oh where? I long for ye here. Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine? 19:09 - SUPPORT THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my supporters on Patreon. What do bed sheets, hessian and bacteria have in common? They might help us reduce the amount of plastic we use in our veg plots!  Award-winning author, gardener, peat- and plastic-free advocate Sally Nex shares fascinating advice for reducing, reusing and recycling the 500 million pots, seed trays, and other bits of plastic we get through in our gardens every year in the UK. “When we chip a pot and it goes directly into our soil, it's going to stay there for the next 400 years,” says Sally. “Experiments have shown that earthworms, which are living in soils high in microplastics, lose weight and soil biodiversity is a fraction of what it is in clean soils.” Also in this episode… Chris and Fiona chat about the delay in germination and plant growth due to the cool start to the summer – and reassure that it's not too late to sow now. From the postbag, Anton advises on using organic slug pellets, and the team mull over what creature might be creating ‘strawberry piles'!

So who better to talk to than the founder of this very movement, Rebecca Prince-Ruiz. I am honestly so excited to talk to Rebecca and hear all her wisdom, advice, tips and even a few kernels of optimism about the plastic pollution problem. In this episode Rebecca shares:  -         Her background and how she got into plastic free July -         Why she found her first experience with a recycling facility so confronting -         How difficult she found her first plastic free month -         How plastic free July grew to the size it is now -         The impact she has seen of Plastic Free July have since it started. -         What the global plastics treaty is -         If she thinks politicians are doing well with this the plastics issue -         Why a tax on virgin plastic products could help -         Whether she has companies pushing back against Plastic Free July -         Why the solution is to have plastic companies involved in the full life of their products, not just until the point of sale -         Some good news about the plastic pollution problem  Key Quotes “For me visiting a recycling facility was really confronting”  “We're just creating a growing problem that we're always playing catch up and we're never going to be able to recycle our way out of”  “We have states in the US where there is legislation to ban a plastic bag ban”  “It's still cheaper and easier for manufacturers to use virgin plastics than it is to use recycled content” You can get involved with the podcast online Find our full podcast plus our sister podcast via the website here: https://www.briannewest.com/podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nowthatswhaticallpodcasts/ You can follow me on socials on the below accounts. Have you ever read Lord of the Rings and noticed that each time the hobbits meet a new race along the road, it's the OLDEST RACE EVER?! I wrote a song about that bragging. There are a lot of famous male composers in history. Apryl Knight will introduce you to some of the incredible female composers that you may not have heard of. This is Pub Songs & Stories #287 0:21 - Marc Gunn “The Lady of Setliff Manor” from Soul of Harper 2:41 - WELCOME TO PUB SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. I'm a Sci F' Irish musician and podcaster living in Atlanta, Georgia. If you're new to the show, please subscribe. You can do that PubSong.com or Just send me an email to follow@celtfather. Will you be part of Plastic Free July by choosing to refuse single-use plastics? 5:46 - CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. That is usually how it rolls. But at the end of September, we're invading Scotland's Whisky distilleries in between hiking throughout the country. It's gonna be epic. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. Learn more about the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ 6:12 - MY FAVORITES OF CELTIC TOP 20 Every week, the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast asks fans of the show to vote for your favorite songs in the podcast. Those votes are compiled at the end of the year to create the Celtic Top 20, your pick of the best music of the year. I don't just make the podcast, I'm a fan of it too. So here is another favorite from recent episodes. 6:34 - Emma Langford "Sailor's Wife" from Sowing Acorns From Irish & Celtic Music Podcast #656: Plant Your Boots for Freedom 9:32 - THE STORY OF MIDDLE EARTH BRAGGING SONG Original name “Never Give Up the Mountain” Wrote while visiting my mom and reading Lord of the Rings in Italy Middle Earth Bragging Song lyrics and music by Marc Gunn January 27, 2003 We're the Race of Men Conquer valleys and glens We build huge towers in the sky We're strong and we're bold, Though it be or it be cold We'll fight everyone till we die Oh, we'll never give up the mountain As long as hope remains And you will never see A race as important as we… We're the race of Dwarves In dark caverns we forge And shape the ore that we mine We're stout with beards But give us a beer, And we'll drink to the gold that we find Oh, we'll never give up the mountain As long as there's money to be made And you will never see A race as important as we… We're the race of Elves In forests we dwell At one with earth and the sky We're the race first born And our only concern Is how close to our gardens you lie Oh, we'll never give up the mountain At least until our time is done And you'll never see, A race as old as we… We're the race of Ents And we're what was meant When they said there are shepherd's to trees We've been stuffy and slow Since our women left home And many have fallen to sleep But we'll never give up the mountain Our trees are there to defend And you will never see A race as old as the trees… I am Tom Bombadill I can never stand still There's too many creatures to see. I've many songs to sing And a wife in the stream So whistle a diddle-diddle to call me. Oh I'll never give up the mountain Or say I'm the oldest alive For you'll probably see A hobbit climbing a tree And it won't matter diddle [whistle] It won't matter diddle [whistle] It won't matter diddle how high! 17:46 - Marc Gunn “Middle Earth Bragging Song” from Soul of Harper 20:19 - SUPPORT THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my supporters on Patreon. But I can't name even one woman. So I got really excited to talk with Apryl Knight at Sherwood Forest Faire a few weeks back. She had me captivated by her knowledge of women in music through centuries. Apryl Knight has been playing music since she was 3 years old. She plays the bowed psaltery and the hurdy gurdy at Renaissance festivals, SCA events around the country. She does it solo as well as with her band Tulstin Troubadours. She started telling me about women in music in history. I decided to sit down and find out more through an interview. She shared some of her favorite medieval women in music, plus thoughts on traveling as a solo female on the road. And her favorite app while traveling as a vegan too. Jackie Wassilie emailed: “So..just listened to my first podcast..it was the absolute fastest hour! Totally entertaining in my early quiet morning hour. Awesomeness!” Ryan Weyls shared a photo from Wolfe Tones in Norwalk, CT on March 13: “Hi Marc, here's a photo of the Wolfe Tones from what they say is their last tour of the US. In a nod to our modern era, they had a keyboardist playing bass lines and synth strings, and a laptop was visible onstage as well. The Mac might have been for the slide show or a click track, or both. I'd prefer a live bassist but their extra man made it work with his Roland. Have a great weekend. Patrick Rieger emailed photos right before St Patrick's Day: “Hello Marc, Celtic Pittsburgh was part of the Saint Patrick's Day parade for the first time this year, and it was also my first parade on such a scale. I was part of two tiny parades for other occasions, but nothing like this. Pittsburgh Public Safety estimated 200,000 spectators would be lining the 1.4 miles route, and it certainly looked it. Emerging from under a railroad bridge to reach the start of the parade route and seeing the sides of the streets of downtown Pittsburgh packed with so many people cheering and whooping was a thrill. Some people were even watching from a parking garage. We had seven people marching. Three members marched, as well as some people who volunteered to march with us. Two people were from the Lady MacGregor Lodge #73 of the Daughters of Scotia based in Youngwood, PA. Besides groups honoring Irish and Celtic culture, there were other groups in the parade, including a Ghostbusters fan group. The radio program who interviewed Susan Borowski and I, The Saturday Light Brigade, asked people downtown for the parade to call in and let them know how the parade was going, so I called while we were waiting in the staging area. I have attached some photos, most to show the size of the crowd, and one of the reviewing stand.”

We heard some Celtic music along our route!” Michael Maloney emailed a St Patrick's Day photo: “Morning Marc! Happy belated St. Patrick's Day and Birthday! I feel like I'm still recovering. I play solo at Hugh O'Neill's in Malden, and several shows with my bandmates, The Boston Harbor Bhoys (Waltham Sr. Center, Medford's Ford Tavern, Framingham Elks fundraiser, Quincy's Assembly, and Boston's Green Dragon). So many songs, so many memories. I loved playing Hugh O'Neill's, where a table of young people requested The Saw Doctor's "N17" and ran out from their tables on the refrain each time to shout out "and the grass is green!". To the Sr Center in Waltham where the ENTIRE room of 100 people got all the hand - claps right on "Wild Rover" by the 2nd refrain, and the beautiful emotions expressed from our rendition of Danny Boy. To guests at the Framingham elks getting up to do all the dance moves to "The unicorn song", to seeing old fans from the South Shore of Boston that we haven't seen in 4 years requesting "Raglan Road", to jumping around The Green Dragon with my harmonica and tambourine leading hand claps on 'Finnegan's Wake" getting the whole bar clapping together. Agh, it was all so wonderful, went through a range of song styles and eras in the Celtic music catalogue, and it was wonderful connecting with audiences from the 20's up to their 90's, who all appreciated the music and experience in their own ways. It was one for the books! “

I'd love to see a  picture of what you're doing while listening or of a band that you saw recently. Email me at follow@bestcelticmusic. Stan Berry emailed: “Good morning from Northern Alberta. I just got back from another trip into the wilds of Northern British Columbia. It snowed last week while I was driving up but cleared up in a couple of days leaving everything very wet and sloppy. There must have been over 100 pounds of mud on my vehicle. The bears are out and I have seen a couple of black bears along the roads. The bush is very dry this year and one place where I normally see trumpeter swans and other aquatic birds is completely dry. I will include a couple of photographs from this time last year. There is great concern about the potential wildfire situation this summer. I truly enjoy listening to the podcasts while I drive. Unfortunately, I have been unable to download the last couple of them. Has there been a change in the way they are posted? Please give my warmest regards to your family. I regret that I was unable to journey to the states this spring as there have been a number of changes on behalf of some of my clients.” Carl C emailed: “I'm disappointed you needed to do this after all these years. It detracts from the quality of the podcast.” Thank you Carl for writing. I really appreciate the feedback. As I emailed when you wrote, I am still testing the ads. I have decided I don't prefer them at the beginning of the show. So at present, at least, I'm not doing that. As I continue to test, I will only have them at the end of the show. Right now, I am leaning on the idea of keeping those on the show. Because even a little bit of money helps with finances. But I will make a final decision in July or August when I should have some better understanding of the results of my tests. Timothy Potts of Clay Babies emailed a photo: “Hi Marc, You played one of our songs last year on your show. We just released a NEW ALBUM of CELTIC FIDDLE TUNES!!! We are very excited! We recorded the whole thing live on New Year's Eve as if we were playing at a session. Here is a link to the Bandcamp page: If you play any of the sets, I'd recommend track one or track three. On November 1st my wife gave me a Celtic Podcast shirt, pint glass and some recordings for my birthday. I've been enjoying them (see attached pic)!”

Plastic Free July is attractive to sustainability-minded folks for a number of reasons, but I wanted to highlight all the lessons Iʻve learned along the way so you donʻt have to learn them the hard way - all from my backyard (sorry for wind!) Gray whales have an incredible story to tell. They also are a species that demonstrates clearly what is happening to our oceans with climate change. Once nearly hunted to extinction and knocked out of the Atlantic Ocean, Gray Whales were on the brink. They are a model species for conservation as they went from around 1000 whales to nearly 25,000 whales in 2016. However, with a rapidly changing climate and a diminishing food supply due to their incredibly unique ecologically niche, Gray Whales have suffered a setback. In 2019, thousands of Gray Whales perished and now their population is around 15,00 whales. Yet, there is hope and we do bring that up in this week's podcast. A special whale to help us promote our Plastic Free July. Another thank you to all our Patreon supporters. We now are hosting monthly Zoom meetings with them, answering questions and getting ideas on which species they want covered. You too can join for one cup of "good" coffee a month. Look for that and enjoy this oldie but goodie episode on Great White Sharks. By far the most iconic fish, the Great White Shark, was made a legend by the movie Jaws. Yet, it was a play on the strongest human emotion, fear, that made this creature on of the most infamous of modern time. Eddie Olschanski is on a mission. Five days a week, year-round, Eddie can be seen fishing for trash in his kayak on the Cuyahoga River in the Flats. Outfitted with just a life jacket, a trash grabber, and garbage bags, Eddie and his volunteers have plucked over 50,000 lbs of trash from the shipping canal, the last place the trash can be removed before it drains into Lake Erie. Eddie founded Trash Fish CLE in 2017 to keep our lake clean, educate people about plastic pollution, and encourage people to get out and enjoy the water. For this episode, we joined Eddie on the river, along with two recruitments, Laura and Cheri. To celebrate Plastic Free July, Mary and Emma are bringing back one of their favorite episodes on sustainable living: episode 86 with Danielle Alvarado which first aired on April 8th, 2022.    Learn to make space for what truly makes you happy using the power of refusal and conscious choice, with Danielle Alvarado of Sustainably Kind Living. Danielle's educational online collective for the conscious consumer provides alternative resources to the harmful fast fashion, home, and beauty industries. Moved by the horrific stories she heard first hand from garment workers in Southeast Asia, Danielle found her calling by advocating for sustainable fashion and for a rejection of harmful and toxic industrial systems. After making the move to Italy to begin her family, Danielle found herself in a small Italian village where sustainable slow-living was simply the norm. Amazed by this new way of life and inspired by her experience in Asia, she began a blog to educate and advocate for a paradigm shift towards simple living. She now preaches about the power to bypass consumerism by asking, “What truly makes us happy?” and “What defines actual need?” Danielle knows that beneath all of the things we think we want, we are really longing for acceptance and connection back to each other and the Earth. She also knows that if we have the privilege to consider sustainable options, then we have the responsibility to select those options. Ultimately, she argues that slow living is, at its core, a call to show ourselves and the world greater empathy.   Please be advised, this episode contains mention of sexual assault and sexual violence.  Topics Discussed • Sustainable Fashion  • Consumer Culture  • Fast Fashion  • Child Labor  • Social Inequality  • Minimalism • Conscious Consumerism • Slow Fashion • Slow Living Episode Resources: Elizabeth Kline Good Dirt Episode  Fashion Revolution  The True Cost Documentary  Wildling Shoes  Plastic Free July Follow Plastic Free July on Instagram @plasticfreejuly Connect with Danielle Alvarado: • Website: www.sustainablykindliving.com • Instagram @sustainablykindliving and @sustykindliving  • Facebook, Sustainably Kind Living • Facebook, Danielle Alvarado  • Pinterest, Sustainably Kind Living ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
