Our guest is Rebekah Scott, from South Dakota. Her whole vibe reminds me of Chip and Joanna Gaines on HGTV but on a whole different level of cool. I was first introduced to Rebekah in the November 2018 Issue of the Handmade Seller Magazine. In this episode, Rebekah shares her story to help other women lean into their power and give themselves the permission to pause and slow down. Here a few main things Rebecca and I talk about during this episode: Why and How to slow down, How to look at yourself as an expert, and Really getting clear on what you're good at and finding inspiration in that. Last but not least Rebekah shares with us how important mental health is to her and her family and how she’s turned a very difficult pain into a passion to help save many. Prayer 2021

February 4  Scripture of the Day:    Acts 21:5 “They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.” Group Prayer When I first started to attend Full Gospel services, I was not used to this idea of everyone in the building praying out loud, some in other tongues, some in English, praying at the same time for about 5 minutes or more.  That just seemed weird to me. Even when I was a Bible School, some instructors would come in and we would do this. I didn't like it. Not at all. But, I was at least willing to acknowledge that “I did not know everything” and, after all, I was at Bible school to learn, right?  I also understood that true Church was meant to be fashioned after the FIRST CHURCH – which was the Church in the Book of Acts.  In the Bible, it is called the “Law of first mention” and if the Church of Acts was the first church that the Holy Spirit set up after the ascension of Jesus and the Day of Pentecost, it must be how He wants it to operate  (despite man's best attempts at doing otherwise). So, I decided to study this out for myself. And when I did, I found this verse and others like it (Acts 2:1; 4:24: 16:25 and others) that showed me there was POWER in the unity of prayer like that! Praise God! I was onto something! These scriptures referred to “THEY lifted their VOICES…” This was not one man praying out loud and everyone else remaining silent… Now, don't get me wrong. I love my one on one time with the Lord in prayer. I tend to receive Wisdom and Inspiration on matters that I lift to Him in my private prayer time. But there are times when we need to be united in prayer and everyone “lifting their voice in one accord.” Amen. Another example is when Paul and Silas were praying while in prison. This scripture also references they were praying, out loud, together, at the same time. Amen! Don't shout me down when I'm preaching good!  What happened? An earthquake hit that opened every single door in that prison…but nobody escaped!  That was unheard of – back then and today! Amen! But what else happened? The jailers entire family was saved!  And don't you know the reason none of the prisoners escaped? All of them were born again, too! They didn't want to leave that prison because, for the first time in their lives – they were TRULY set free! Glory to God! And, for further proof of that, Paul wrote a letter to the “Church of the Phillipians.” This was the church the jailer founded – with the prison inmates! Glory to God! What else happened?  I'll get more into this aspect tomorrow… but I want to zero in on one more thing as an example of the power of a united prayer – out loud in front of everyone – and how God responds… The Bible says an earthquake occurred that opened the doors to the prison, right? Did you ever notice there is no record in the Bible of an earthquake shaking anything else except the prison? Right where Paul and Silas were praying? How's that for answered prayer? Nobody except those who were praying received that kind of answer to their prayers!  I believe some of the prisoners, hearing Paul and Silas talking and then singing and praising God and praying out loud – I believe some of them joined in as well. This is what brought God on the scene! Amen! If He did it for them, what does the Bible say, He will do it for you! For God is not a respecter of persons, Amen!  Glory to God. So – YES – a united group prayer is important. It is effective. It does work. But, as with everything else, DO NOT make this a doctrine or a religious activity. That will never work.  But when the inspiration of the Holy Spirit says to do it – then GO FOR IT!  Amen! Let's Pray! Why TOP TEN LISTS are BULLSHIT ... and why we should STILL HAVE THEM | MUSIC is not a GENRE - Season 2 Episode #11

MUSIC is not a GENRE

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2021 15:45

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Everybody loves top lists. They're easy to digest. They give you immediate reasons to love/hate them, agree/disagree with them. They spark all kinds of responses. We can't help ourselves, even though we all know they're subjective and arbitrary. Even though we all know they're COMPLETE BULLSHIT. If you've been following along with my podcasts or live concerts, you've heard me talk about my top favorite music artists. If you've REALLY been following along, you'll also recall two weird things about my top artists list. FIRST, my TOP 5 includes about 15 listings. And SECOND, it changes ALL THE TIME. So if that's the case, is my list an actual “best-of” at all? Yes. And no. YES, because my list absolutely represents my favorites. The artists at or near the top will always be at or near the top. If you expand my list to – say – the top 100, there's a chance that 95% of it will never change. But also NO, because those rankings are always in flux. My number one will likely always be my number one. But my numbers two through ten are constantly shifting. The #2 band might be #3 or 5 or 7 on a different day. An 11 thru 20 band might pop into the top ten next month, and then pop down to #28 the month after. And that's not just okay, it's honest. It accounts for natural human rhythms, changes in mood or context or emphasis, even shifts in opinion or judgment. We all have our unquestionable beliefs, ones that won't be shaken no matter who says what, or what new experiences or information we bump into. The mistake we OFTEN make, though, is to believe that ALL of our beliefs are unquestionable, immutable, unshakable. If we allow ourselves to be more open to our natural rhythms, to let our vulnerability poke through, we become more aware of how often our minds & hearts shift from one small belief to its opposite. Or more likely our belief shifts one way or another on the spectrum, as the idea of hard & fast opposites is often as delusional as top lists themselves. When we see that these shifts aren't just there AND THAT'S OKAY, but are actually MORE honest and positive, we start to plug in more to the fullness of our minds & hearts, and how much more dynamic and vibrant the world is. Try it. Instead of making a numbered list, make a GROUP of favorites and a GROUP of second favorites, etc. etc. The inclusiveness and variety of it feel amazing. You'll start to see the walls of categorization & division dissolve, and possibility expand to a limitless capacity. Whether it's music or movies or people or politics, we should never have to limit our choices & “favorites” to only those at the top – the ones we're pressured to pick and stick to. We should be able to choose a group of anything or anyone, and say, “THOSE are what I like, love, respect, agree with, believe in.” So YES, we SHOULD make our lists. We SHOULD deliberate and decide on what matters to us. But let our top picks come with a revolving door. Let our voting be ranked instead of either/or. And as with so many of the things I talk about, we'll find that we have way more connection, way more in common, than we ever thought before. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

Bitcoin will hit $65,000 due to a combination of low supply and “tons of new buyers,” major BTC investor Mike Novogratz says. In an increasingly popular Twitter debate on Nov. 17, Novogratz, who is well known for his prominent Bitcoin plugs, told actress Maisie Williams not to hesitate in buying the cryptocurrency. Williams had released a poll asking Twitter followers whether or not she should invest in BTC. At press time, the verdict was split, with 47% of the roughly 750,000 responses supporting an investment. The poll soon caught the attention of famous Twitter users, among them Tesla CEO Elon Musk. “I bought more BTC last night at 15,800. It’s going to 20K and (then) To 65K,” Novogratz commented. “The network effect has taken over. I see tons of new buyers and there is very little supply. It’s an easier trade here (than) at 11K. So YES, buy it.” For complete show notes and for the full premium experience with video, visit our YouTube channel at http://CryptoNewsAlerts.net

Greetings Gunn Runner Pub Songs Podcast on the charts. New singles gaining traction. Coffee with the Celtfather is back. And finishing up the Selcouth CD. And a rant on voting. It's all on Celtfather Monthly, show #269 Before we start, I want to remind you to register to vote. It looks in most states, you have until about October 5th to register, but it does vary. And just because you think you're registered, does not mean you are. Georgia has a lawsuit against it because there were over 200,000 people illegally purged from the voting record. Go to vote.org to check your registration and to register. 0:36 - PODCASTS Four episodes of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast were released in September, including a Celtic Women's special for Halfway to St Patrick's Day. I had a lot of great comments about that episode. Coming up is a Celtic Fusion episode and a Samhain or Celtic Halloween episode. I'm still debating how to theme the show. The first episode of the Pub Songs Podcast in September was a performance I recorded for Virtual Dragon Con. It was a fun show. Though as always, it's weird doing shows without audiences who respond. But I feel like I'm getting good at it. At the end of the month, the Pub Songs Podcast topped the Music Commentary Charts on Apple Podcasts. That's because I did the first big push I've done for the show in a LONG time. It was all a part of the Hobbit Day show I released on Sept 22. It features hobbit songs as well as the second single from the Dancing With Hobbits album I'm recording with Sam Gillogly. It's called "Brandywine River Reel". I feel like that was a good episode where I share my love of hobbit origin story. I created a couple themes for the October shows. One is about coming together. And the other is Firefly-related in time for the single release of "Tough Times" which I hope to get done before the election. It's also time to start thinking about the Celtic Christmas Podcast again. I know that sounds early for you. But in the music biz, bands should start submitting Christmas music tracks to radio and such in October. So that's one thing I hope to start on next month. 2:39 - VIDEOS I released several new video singles this month. There's one for "Whiskey in the Jar". This one is just me and the autoharp. It seemed like a good idea for a video to record since I released a single at the beginning of the month too. Another features two toy sheep I got for my daughters last summer. It's called "Sinead & Saoirse at Killarney National Park" and features the music of "Hobbit Hornpipe". The videos are all from my Celtic Invasion of Dingle last summer. We had a side trip to Killarney which was a lot of fun. And got silly too! My favorite video was "Lords of the Run". I go running with a couple friends 2-3 times per week. We decided to run in costume on the Saturday of Dragon Con to celebrate the Dragon Con parade that didn't happen this year. It was SO MUCH FUN to record. The video also features the music of "Brandywine River Reel". Coffee with The Celtfather is BACK for Season 7. This time it's on YouTube every Thursday at noon eastern. So far, I am feeling really good about the move from Facebook. Most of my regular viewers made the transition. The time seems better. Attendance feels up. And those who watch actually stick around (unlike on Facebook). Oh! As a cool bonus, I have themes for many shows. I've no problem coming with theme ideas too because of all the singles I'm releasing. So woohoo!!! I also am now notifying Coffee fans every Thursday via email. If you haven't signed up, please do so! 5:06 - IN THE STUDIO Last month, I scheduled 12 different singles I planned to release. I have new tracks coming out every 2-3 weeks through January. So far, the results are encouraging. I'll tell you more about the stats in a wee bit. But each of my singles is doing better and better. This test is looking very positive. Meanwhile, I'm still working on my next CD Selcouth. I have three new songs finished. But I still have some big tracks I need to finish recording. My goal was to release the album to fans by November. I'm starting to doubt whether I will achieve that goal. Songs that need work include: Breathing Bright Side of Everything Genetic Counseling Song By Amazing Grace? Serenity Valley Waltz Kilty Pleasure I'm so proud of all of those tracks. Which is why I find myself coming to a mental block to completing them. But I hope to make more progress tomorrow. 7:11 - MERCH The Sainted Song Hengers Collection is back in my store. This features this year's Irish & Celtic Music Podcast shirt, some pint glasses and more. It's only available for a limited time. I also added some two new USBs: Cats 'n' Celts and Rise of The Celtfather. Oh! And if you're subscribed to my mailing list, you'll get a discount code to save 15% in my store. Shop at magerecords.com. If you're a Brobdingnagian Bards fan, then you might want to pick up one of the last copies of "Songs of Ireland". We have finally almost sold out of that physical CD. I think there's only five copies left. You can get it in the Bards store. 9:12 - CELTIC TRAVEL Join my in 2021 for the Celtic Invasion of Scotland. We're staying in a castle in Helensburgh, Scotland. I updated lyrics for the Irish Song Lyrics website, including: "We'll Have A Pint", "Everybody Needs A Drinking Song", "Prettiest Hobbit" and "Whiskey in the Jar" since I added a new video. 10:05 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR OCTOBER THURS: Coffee with The Celtfather, YouTube (Season 7) @ 12:00 PM EST OCT 3: Interstellar Ginger Beer & Exploration Co in Alabaster, AL @ 6:00 - 8:00 PM EDT OCT 17: The Lost Druid in Decatur, GA @ 7:00 - 9:00 PM EDT OCT 22: Celtfather Live on YouTube @ 8:00 - 9 PM EDT 12:00 - STATS Mailing list subscribers = 1203 is up from 1171 Celtic Music Magazine = 4008 is up from 4003 YouTube Subscribers = 4790  is up 52 from 4738 Facebook Likes = 3759 is up from 3755 Instagram = 1851 is up from 1838 Spotify followers: 1632 is up 24 from 1608 is up 29 from 1579 # Number of listens on Spotify: 2588 is up from 2280 Latest Spotify Single Stats: "Hobbit Hornpipe" released Aug 26: 801 is up from 18 "Whiskey in the Jar" released Sept 8: 160 "Brandywine River Reel" released Sept 22: 22 Most-popular songs on Spotify: The Widow and the Devil (1.4K), Hobbit Hornpipe (789), Doctor of Gallifrey (469), A-Working in the Garden (251), Hero of Canton (200) Most-popular songs on Amazon Music: Hero of Canton (454), Doctor of Gallifrey (280), The Widow and the Devil (78), Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster (39), Bring Me Home, Boys (39) 16:33 - PATREON Patreon Subscribers: 162 is up from 159 Patreon Monthly Income: $1196 is up from $1178 We'll see what happens to those numbers when I finish this podcast on a rant. But I feel like it's now necessary to encourage you to vote in November.  Some people are talking about voting fraud. Some are talking about foreign interference in our elections. Some don't think voting makes a difference. I want to share a few hopefully bipartisan thoughts on the topic. The statistics say that voting fraud is immaterial. Anyone who tells you otherwise is committing voter fraud by making you think your vote doesn't count. It does. So don't believe those liars. We already know that Russia and China are trying to manipulate the outcome of this election. We know that Russia succeeded in the last election. They're using social media to manipulate us. How? They share memes and fake news that appeal to you. And you end up sharing them. My suggestion. Stop. Put a moratorium on sharing news or memes until December. Instead, share who you plan to vote for and why. That said, I will vote for Joe Biden in November. And I will tell you why. I want to bring kindness back to the White House. I want stability. I want a return to Law and Order. Trump promises that but makes things worse Every time. Vice President Biden will do that. He's not the candidate I want. But he's the candidate our country needs. He's a moderate who will actively try to serve ALL Americans. Not just his people. Trump is threatening our Constitution. He said he will refuse to leave office if he loses. That is the definition of a coup. That is treason. And right now, the polls have him with a 22% chance to win. A landslide victory is the only way America will have peace and prosperity back in our nation. It's the only way Trump will willing leave and our country will remain intact. So Yes, I do want you to vote for Joe Biden in November. Our country depends on it. Thank you for supporting Sci F'Irish music at Celtfather.com! #CFMonthly

How to Love Your Body

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 24, 2020 11:38

This week on How to Love Your Body we are diving HEAD ON to what we know is the #1 fear in UnDieting and that is weight gain.   It doesn’t matter when or where we ask, almost every woman’s concern and fear is weight gain or another body composition worry which is all the same thing in the end.   Before we get into our conversation today we want to share with you a resource we created to DEEP DIVE into this fear called the “Weight Gain WTF” video series. The series begins Monday July 27th so be sure to sign up before then to receive all 5 videos. This series is only happening July 27th - July 31st 2020. Go to bit.ly/weightgainwtf   As we talk about the fear of weight gain you may be thinking YES this is the biggest thing holding me back OR you might be thinking no that’s not my biggest fear it’s actually: Eating too much Never stop eating Being unhealthy   We get that, those are other fears that people have but at the root, these fears are based on weight as well.   Here’s why:   Any food fear is really about what we believe food DOES to our body. Really be honest with yourself right now - if you do have a food fear, eating fear - would you be worried about food at all if it never affected the way your body looks?   We both know the answer is no. :)   As for the health concern - there may be the rare person who has a medical issue that they are genuinely worried about when it comes to letting go of food rules etc BUT contemplate this as well - if your internal health remains intact but you gain weight is that 100% good with you?   We find when people are concerned about food or “health” it usually equals a weight concern.   But here’s the thing - that is SO NORMAL and expected. The root of dieting is a weight obsession - an obsession with losing it and an obsession with avoiding gaining it, so when you’ve come from that line of thinking for decades OF COURSE that is going to be the main concern.   It’s not vanity, it’s not self centered - it’s what we’ve been taught. That weight loss equals success, beauty and acceptance and weight gain equals shame, embarrassment and failure. So YES we are going to be preoccupied with our weight.   But it’s time for this to end. The fear of weight gain has run our lives for way too long.   It affects everything - the way we eat, exercise, socialize, our relationships, careers - everything!   Especially as women we have been so distracted in changing our bodies its taken vital time and energy away from us to be able to change the world!   And this truly is a societal issue that needs healing - and that healing starts with us individually finding peace in our bodies and at whatever weight our bodies want to be.   We know it might seem like your healing wont make a difference in this world but it will. Imagine if 50% of women healed their relationship with weight and their bodies. Imagine the industries that would change over night - pretty much anything that is sold to women to “fix” them would have to rework how they do business. Think: diet pills, diet programs, WW, Myfitnesspal app, cellulite creams and even makeup. All of these things are developed and sold to cure an insecurity that we can heal from!   YOU will make a difference in our world by healing so this isn't just about you anymore, being at peace in your body will affect your children, mother, friends and loved ones in an impactful way.    We hope this gives you inspiration to PUSH THROUGH the fear and actively work on healing it so you can finally move on with your life and begin experiencing wellness without the obsession. To push through the fear be sure to grab our 5 day Weight Gain WTF video series starting Monday July 27th. Go to bit.ly/weightgainwtf

This is an epic interview with Isabel Friend, International Water Advocate, public speaker, Reiki master, & teacher. Today we are talking all about Sacred Water. I was so excited when I came across Isabel's work, as Water has been showing up in my Akashic Record readings often, and one of the things that has very clear to me when I'm working with clients, particularly when I open up their Records around their health, is that there is an epidemic of dehydration... The topic of this episode is so critically important and relevant to every living being on this Earth that I really encourage you to sit in, even if you feel like you don't have an interest in water.    Quick disclaimer: Isabel is residing and calling in from beautiful Bali, and in Bali there is a plethora of roosters that love to sing so throughout the episode you're going to hear a lot of these beautiful rooster crows. Sometimes they can be quite loud so I encourage you to stick with it and stay for the entire interview because there is so much we cover!  We start off with looking at the best kinds of water to drink and filtration systems Isabel recommends, and the difference between wild living water and filtered water. Isabel shares her personal philosophy around water and why we need to begin to cultivate a different relationship and view of water as a whole well-rounded living being.    Isabel takes us on a magical journey of wild water... Do you know where your water comes from? Isabel is going to talk about that natural journey from the womb of Mother Earth rising to the surface and into your cells. We touch on the importance of drinking local wild water, how you can source wild water, the most important resource that Isabel wants you to know.    Beyond the health aspects of water and hydration, Isabel goes into the new biology of water looking at structured water, what that means, how do we get access to structured water, how do we create structured water, and why drinking unstructured bulk water is problematic for our health. We weave into the cosmic and esoteric aspects of water, and communion with water as a spiritual act that feeds our health on a very deep level. Isabel shares the origin stories that contain water from indigenous perspectives and the ways that humans have been communing with living water as a source of information, Divinity and tapping into the memory of the universe. So Yes - we talk about crystals, water scrying, hydromancy and working with water to tap into the answers of all of our greatest questions!    Of course, we also discuss the very real problems that we are seeing from our distorted relationship with the elements and with Mother Earth... Isabel talks about the political situation, privatization and accessibility issues around water, the water wars, and how we can step up as water guardians and embrace water activism in our daily lives.  I also share an Akashic Record reading on water that I channeled just before we hopped on the call for the interview -  it's so beautiful to see all of the parallels that have been woven in throughout our discussion.    *Special Discount for FYW Listeners!* Isabel is doing some amazing work and teachings around water, and she has many offerings including a special discount for listeners for a water e-course that I'm totally going to do and I want you to do it with me! Stay tuned to the end to hear all about her ecourse and how to access your special discount.    We'd love to hear your feedback and please share this episode out with your family and friends - one of the best things that we can do is share this information out so that more people awaken to the importance and critical matter that is Water and how we really need to show up for water with our full hearts and warriors spirits.   Click here for full show notes: http://www.wildlyrooted.com/fywpodcast/waterislife    >> SUBSCRIBE :: Sign up for newsletter to receive updates on upcoming programs and events >> GET WILDLY UNSTUCK :: Sign up for Wildly Unstuck audio program (it’s free) + learn the top 5 things sabotaging your health goals & what to do about them. ***** SUPPORT THE PODCAST Your support means the world... Key points:YES - most Canadian banks are making the ability to defer your mortgage payments available for eligible applicantsYES - the ability to defer for UP TO 6 months seems to be the generally promoted tenure of deferring your paymentsYES - for those that are anticipating hardship, you need to inquire and apply with, or at the very least inform your lender that you may possibly be defaulting on your next payment. Whatever you do, don’t do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. If you have already missed a mortgage payment and haven’t had the chance to be proactive about it, continue on the path and try to reach them to explain your situation and proceed to formally apply for the programYES - lack of action from you PRIOR to your first missed mortgage payment will likely impact your credit score. The key is to be forthcoming and proactive - I can’t stress this enough.YES - you will be on the phone or waiting for an online response for a very long time...this is normalYES - you may possibly have to re-apply for the deferred payment every monthYES - most lenders will simply be tacking on your missed mortgage payment on to your existing mortgage principle. So YES, you will technically be paying interest on interest...but seriously, who really cares at this point. If this is a main arguing point for you...you can’t have your cake and eat it. Just get over it.NO - the program is not and was never called TheMortgageFORGIVENESSProgram. It is known as the DEFERREDMortgagePaymentProgram...and as the name implies, the interest payments that are not being paid will most definitely be deferred in to the future (more on this later)NO - not everyone will qualify for a mortgage deferral. it is possible that the lender will contest your degree of hardship and decline your application for itNO - not every lender will allow as high as 6 months in deferred paymentsNO - if you are NOT in immediate hardship and are just kind of hoping for extra insurance, just in case things get a little challenging, you want to pre-apply for the deferred mortgage program...no, don’t call and clog up the pathway of communication, you will be declined for it anywayNO - you will NOT qualify for this if you are still employedNO - you will likely NOT qualify for this if you have a good amount of cash in the bank or even other sources of unused credit that are available to tap in to (like existing home equity lines of credit & personal lines of credit)***listen to the episode for more details!Guest Contact: n/aMarko Gelo Garage Band Sessions: (produced and performed my Marko)"Isolation" ...intro song (2:30)Contact Marko, he's a Mortgage Broker:604-800-9593 direct Vancouver403-606-3751 direct Calgarymarkogelo.comhomefinancingsolutions.caApply for a MortgageFacebook@markogelo (Twitter)MarkoMusic (SoundCloud Account)...all podcast music tracks are performed and produced by MarkoClick Here to download Marko's Mortgage App (information, rates, calculators, etc) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Have you been hoping for something to keep your mind off this whole Global Pandemic business? Well, then do we have something for you! For Episode 30 of the Nebraska Wedding Podcast, Kelly sits down with Karly Jurgensen of Karlyn Music to discuss all of the unexpected ways music plays in to the big day.  Fun fact, “Karlyn” is actually Karly’s full name – which, of course, explains her business’ name.  She’s been playing the piano since she was 8 years old, and decided pretty early on she hoped to make a career of music. She attended Berkeley College of Music  in Boston, where she received a Bachelor of Music with a major in Songwriting. ( So YES – she totally knows what she’s doing.) After college she moved to NYC where she was part of the big city grind… until she met a Nebraska boy that swept her off her feet. The rest is history! (Some pretty cool history that includes a national TV appearance and subsequent musical career with Mannheim Steamroller (1:50) ) Once in Nebraska, Karly realized there was a legitimate lack of customized music in the wedding industry… one SHE wanted to fill. She now does 50 to 75 weddings in the Nebraska and Iowa areas per year. (2:50) Karly talks about the challenges of running a business while raising two very young children (8:00) and as we usually do around here, she reveals three things her clients may not know about her. (Her FIRST fact involves hanging out Billy Joel and Don Henley. Yeah, really.) Karly dives in to what questions she wishes brides and grooms were asking when booking her services, (11:49) as well as unique ways they can incorporate customized music into their big days. (15:40) She talks through some of the really cool stuff she can put together for both the reception and ceremony, and honestly, we’re shocked we haven’t heard more of this. It’s genius. (17:30) She also goes over what kind of music is best during which parts of your wedding, and how to determine what equipment is needed (because you want your guests to actually hear the vows you worked so hard on!) She also discusses some amazing ideas about incorporating your favorite songs in an entirely unique way you may not have ever thought of! You can find out more about Karly’s work, as well as listen to her absolutely stunning arrangements at Karlynmusic.com, on Instagram @Karlynmusic, or on Facebook.

[MUSIC PLAYING] Welcome to JCO's Cancer Stories-- The art of Oncology brought to you by the ASCO Podcast Network, a collection of nine programs covering a range of educational and scientific content and offering enriching insight into the role of cancer care. You can find all of the shows, including this one, at podcast.asco.org. [MUSIC PLAYING] Welcome to today's version of the ASCO Cancer Stories podcast. Today, my guest on the podcast is Dr. Clara Bloomfield. Dr. Bloomfield was instrumental in the early studies investigating the biology of leukemias and lymphomas, and also the interaction between various molecular markers and treatment. She founded the Correlative Science Committee of The Cancer and Leukemia Group B, which is now designated the Alliance in the 1980s. And I believe that was probably the first such committee in the cooperative groups, and she chaired it for at least 25 years. Her work resulted in numerous groundbreaking insights that led to changes in practice. Personally, and having worked with her for several of those years in CALGB, I really consider her one of the first investigators to perform what we now blithely called, quote, "translational," end of quote, science in cancer. Dr. Bloomfield was born in New York City, but her father, who was an expert in labor and industrial relations, moved the family to Washington, DC during World War II. And after the war, he then took a position at the University of Illinois, leading Dr. Bloomfield to have a nearly lifelong association with the Midwest. She attended undergraduate school at the University of Wisconsin, but then graduated from San Diego State College during a brief foray to the West Coast. She returned to the Midwest to attend medical school at the University of Chicago, and then completed her internal medicine residency and her medical oncology fellowship at the University of Minnesota, where she stayed on faculty until 1989. She then became chair of the Department of Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo for the next eight years, and then moved to the Ohio State University, where she accepted the position as director of the comprehensive and now designated the James Cancer Center. She's remained at OSU and is currently a distinguished university professor and the William G. Pace II professor of cancer research and a senior advisor at the OSU James Cancer Center. Dr. Bloomfield has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed papers. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. She's, frankly, won just too many awards that I can name here. But importantly, she served on the ASCO board of directors, and in 2009, she gave the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Lecture, the highest honor our society can bestow. Clara, welcome to our program. Thank you. You know, I have a lot of questions for you, many of which I thought about that I should have asked you 30 years ago or so when we first started working together in CALGB. But I think the biggest one is, how did you get interested in leukemia in the first place? Were any particular personal insights that resulted in the basis of your career? Or was it just happenstance? I think it happened because in grade school, I had a number of classmates who developed leukemia. And they were sent to the National Cancer Institute because people in those days didn't treat leukemia. And they returned with steroid-bloated faces and soon died. And I thought, well, wouldn't it be cool to develop medicine that could save kids from dying? I'd already decided to become a doctor, so seeing the real-life effects of cancer helped shape my early desire to become an oncologist. So that must have been about the same time, a little bit after, that Drs. Frei, and Freireich, and Holland started combination therapy for leukemia. They must have had a big impact on your career then. I don't remember. [? No, ?] I'm kidding. Actually, the other question-- I know that you spent some time at Stanford and ran into Henry Kaplan. And there was a cute anecdote, I think, about how you presented with his backing at one of the conferences. Can you tell us a little bit about Dr. Kaplan and your work with him? Sure. During my junior and senior years in medical school, I did a sub-internship at the University of California at San Francisco. And I saw a patient with Hodgkin's disease who was not being treated with curative intent. And I said to the attending, you're not giving this patient modern therapy. And the attending replied, well, if you're so smart, we'll have you do grand rounds on how to treat Hodgkin's disease. Remember, I was a medical student. So I called Professor Henry Kaplan at Stanford for advice. And he was great, and he said, well, they never want me to come. I'd be happy to come and help you give grand rounds. So to the surprise of my attending and awe as a medical student, I conducted grand rounds at the University of California at San Francisco with Professor Kaplan. That must have been a big surprise. Yes, I think it was. Actually, one of my interviews has been with Saul Rosenberg, and he also had some great stories about Dr. Kaplan when they first started giving chemotherapy at Stanford. And Kaplan was apparently quite supportive of doing this. So-- Yes, he was. --I never got to meet him. Yeah. Another question, again, about the time you entered the field, I referred to what I consider the big three, Frei, Freireich, and Holland, but their therapy was really pretty empiric for leukemia. It was just hoping that giving more drugs would be better than one drug. But you really got us into genetics. What made you do that? I mean, what made you think that we could treat people, really, with precision medicine better than we did in those days? Well, my second research project I had as a fellow, which was presented at ACR in May of 1972 and published in April of 1973, involved daunorubicin-prednisone therapy for AML. And in that, the question was raised in patients without Auer rods, the question were these of CML in blast crisis was raised, so chromosome studies were done. And this got me started studying cytogenetics in leukemia, and subsequently molecular genetics. And also, you asked if I had a role model, and the answer is no. I did not have a role model. I know that very early on in your career, you published a very controversial paper suggesting that the Philadelphia chromosome could be found in acute lymphocytic leukemia, which at the time, I think, was probably heresy, since it had been associated with CML. I understand that you interacted with Avery Sandberg, the [? tube ?] giant. I remember hearing about Avery Sandberg when I was a freshman in college in genetics, and he supported you. What was the background behind that? At the 1975 ASH meeting, I presented an abstract, I gave a talk on the Philadelphia chromosome-- on Philadelphia chromosome positive acute leukemia. And after that talk, many prominent cytogeneticists raised questions about the validity of my findings. However, Avery Sandberg, while surprised by the findings, said, she may be right. Sometimes these youngsters get things that we've missed. And did you walk out beating your chest? That must have been quite a moment. I was happy that he-- I was happy that he supported me. Well, I want to go on to some of your other work, but I'm going to tell you that in our fellows clinical conference here a couple of weeks ago, which I attend every week, one of the fellows started talking about FLT3 leukemia. But his comment was leukemia is described as the most genomically defined cancer. And I didn't bring it up at that meeting, but I thought, you owe Clara Bloomfield for that statement. You should be really proud of your work. I almost picked up the phone to call you to tell you that our fellows don't know that you did the work. They should, and that's why we're doing these podcasts. So the only thing-- I know you challenged dogma was the treatment of older patients with leukemia. And as you and I both get older, I think it becomes more near and dear to our heart. Can you give some insight into that? I mean, my impression, when I was a fellow, was we just kind of said, oh, you're over 60, it's not worth treating you. But I think you really challenged that and changed that dogma. So ASH [INAUDIBLE] the third paper I published and project that I started on when I started as a fellow, because I was asked to do this by one of my attendings, was to look at treating older patients with acute leukemia. In the early 1970s, which we're talking about, it was considered that standard intensive treatment of patients with acute leukemia over the age of 40 or 50 years of age was malpractice or at least wrong. So when I was asked to look at this, we had a few patients over the age of 60 with AML treated with what was then standard intensive chemotherapy. So I compared the outcome of patients aged 21 to 40, 41 to 60, and 61 to 86 years. And what I found was that patients aged 41 to 60 and greater than 60 responded equally well. As a result, we said that patients over 60 should be treated. This meant that what we did was told major researchers in leukemia that they were wrong. This caused quite a stir, as you might imagine. And interestingly, within the next five to 10 years, they all came back to me and said they had been wrong. In that regard, I watched you in CALGB. I was on the solid tumor side, obviously, but you were really a pioneer in organizing and conducting translational research and correlative research in leukemia in the cooperative groups. When you started, I don't think there was any of that, was there? Were there a lot of obstacles to doing that? I think everybody just takes it for granted now, especially with so-called precision medicine. But what did you have to do to get that started at CALGB? From 1982 on, I was chair of the Correlative Science Committee in Cancer and Leukemia Group B. In 1984, I actually started to have NIH grant to support correlative science in the CALGB cooperative group. In 1984, we already had a trial in Cancer and Leukemia Group B to do cytogenetics in acute leukemia. I mean, a lot of this work was based on my work in cytogenetics. And while there may have been clinicians who were opposed, I had the support of important people like Professor Janet Rowley and the cytogeneticists at the CALGB institutions. And there really were not significant obstacles that I can remember. Of course, if there were people who tried to block me, I probably didn't care and worked around them. I'm sure that's true. I am too. This is part of what-- when you're one of the few women, as I was when I started in the field, I mean, I suppose I was always getting blocked about things, I just don't think much about it. I didn't then and I don't now. That segues into my final question, actually. And these days, more than half of our medical students are women. More than half of our residents are women at the University of Michigan. More than half of our fellows in hem-onc are women. Increasingly, the faculty is there. But when you started, you were really a pioneer, I think, in introducing women into clinical and laboratory research in oncology and academic medical leadership. And I just want to list the things, because I don't think you will, that I think you've done. First, I understand you were the first woman chief resident at the University of Minnesota, the first woman full professor in medicine at the University of Minnesota, one of the first women chairs of medicine in the United States when you were at Roswell Park, the third woman to be director of an NCI-designated Cancer Center. And frankly, as I was preparing this, I was on an airplane and I was watching A Matter of Sex about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and I thought, this is a really familiar story. Do you have any war stories that you thought were particularly telling when you began? And especially, for example, I know you have a story about what the dean told you when you were considering becoming an academic professor. Do you have anything to inspire the people listening to this podcast? I'm sure there were some probably pretty aggressive war stories that I don't remember. And as I said, I don't tend to think about what happened in the past since I'm trying to keep up with the present. But I guess there are a couple of stories. Unbelievably, when I was a medical student, I always sat in the front row in class because that was the only way I could see the slides. And the dean, medical school dean, called me into his office and said it was not ladylike to sit in the front row. And I told him-- it's unbelievable really-- I told him that when he became a lady, he could tell me how to act like one, and walked out on him. But the more important story, I suppose-- that I can remember-- is that when I was appointed an associate professor, which occurred three years after I became an assistant professor, so the head of medicine called me in and said, congratulations, Clara. This is a great accomplishment. He went on to say, however, that since your husband is on the faculty and gets a good salary, we are not going to increase your salary. So when I came home, I told my husband, where upon he called the dean, who called the University president, who said, you be sure she gets the same salary or higher than the highest one you've ever given a new associate professor in medicine. Thus, my pay issue was immediately resolved. It's hard to believe that's a true story, except I saw similar things myself as I was going up, and they were getting corrected, at least. Well, anyway, we're running out of time. And I just want to thank you for all the things you've done, the contributions you've made to the field. Your legacy is incredible, in my opinion. And I think people will long remember what Clara Bloomfield has done in terms of changing how we treat leukemia, changing the treatment of leukemia into groups of patients who traditionally weren't treated, like older folks, and probably the pioneering work you did in bringing women into science and medicine, especially in oncology. So thanks for taking time to speak with me today. And I think people are going to be really thrilled to listen to your story as they drive to work and say, wow, I didn't realize that that's what it was like back in the old days. So thanks so much. And I think, especially, our young and translational scientists, particularly women, and also, most importantly, our patients deserve to give you credit for all of the things you've done and [? thanks ?] you've done. Today's guest is Jenna Free, who is one of the two lovely ladies behind The Body Love Society! Listen in as we discuss thoughts on diet culture, intuitive eating when you want to lose weight, and how to accept your body! Jenna is passionate about body love, and uses the terms "un-dieting" as she shares about her passion for self-love and self-acceptance on this wonderful episode. (Be sure to check out IG to learn more about The Body Love Society's free challenge too!) Wellness Without Obsession The Body Love Society works with women who are interested in intuitive eating and un-dieting. Usually, their clients have struggled with social messaging that tends to lead to obsessions around food, which includes eating, dieting, and body image. At The Body Love Society, they're passionate about living a life of wellness without obsession. Jenna also clarifies that intuitive eating and un-dieting are not code words for "just give up" or "quit caring". Choosing to eat intuitively is a way of honoring and caring for yourself, and is not about just throwing in the towel! Jenna and her partner desire to live an abundant, vibrant, and energetic life....but without restricting or obsessing about it! They've found that women are often fearful about letting go of control of their food. This seems to be connected to the idea that we can achieve some sort of "ideal state" when focus on our weight. The reality is, however, that there is no connection between losing weight/controlling food intake and being abundant, energetic, and feeling great! Dieting isn't saving you from food obsessions. It is CREATING your food obsession. And as you've probably experienced for yourself, dieting never "ends" with you feeling wonderful and being free to live your life. Instead, it constantly requires more, more, more. It's never ending, exhausting, and. completely unnecessary! The BIG Question Everyone Has "Is intuitive eating just eat whatever you want, whenever you want?" Well....yes and no. If you've had a dieting mindset for most of your life, you've internalized so many messages about what you can and can't eat, what foods are "good" and "bad", and how you can control your food intake. You've also gotten used to constantly restricting and binging. A lot of obsession and control are involved! If you move from that dieting mindset straight into intuitive eating, sometimes you do start eating everything...but you miss the whole "listening to your body" part. Instead, you're in "rebellion mode". (That can be part of the process, but it's not where you'll stay!) As you do the mindset work and recalibrate yourself, you begin to experience the freedom of eating anything you want as a part of listening to your body and its needs. So YES -- once you've done the mindset work, intuitive eating does mean eating whatever you want. It's just that the way you understand that (and practice it) is significantly different once you get out of your "dieter's brain". The next most common question is often: Is intuitive eating healthy? Intense, Restrictive, Consuming Jenna describes herself as the "cute chubby one" as a 16 year old. Looking back she can see just how cute she was...but at the time she decided she needed to get on a diet and start exercising. And if eating more veggies and moving more was where it stopped, it would have been fine! However, weight loss and dieting lends itself to a "never enough" mentality. In her life, this led to food regimens and workout routines that became more intense, more restrictive, and more consuming. (Can you resonate?) Jenna became all too familiar with the dieting lifestyle, and experienced falling off the wagon (and climbing back on) over and over again. She found that her world was her body, and she was consumed with thoughts about food and eating. During this time she would have "cheat days" and binge on huge amounts of food, then not eat anything for the rest of the week. As an intuitive eater, she's been able to move towards mindfulness, creativity, and awareness of the present moment instead. Rather than obsessing about food consumption and rule following, she is able to release all that in favor of practices that actually make her feel good! Reaching a Place of Peace While trying on her bathing suit years ago, Jenna realized that her preoccupation was with the 5 pounds she needed to lose so that everything would be "perfect". Rather than focusing on how fun her upcoming vacation would be, she was devising ways to lose weight. It was an "aha" moment to recognize that every moment seemed to be marked with what she needed to fix or change before she could fully enjoy her life. After a few of these "aha" moments in a row, she decided that her body looking a certain way wasn't going to "fix" her life in the ways she kept thinking it would. As she journeyed through this process towards becoming and intuitive eater and un-dieting once and for all, she realized that she had suffered through the dieting lifestyle for nothing! Dieting is like holding on to a ledge SO tightly, with extreme fear about falling or losing control. And then when you finally let go... the ground is 3 feet away. All that fear, control, and obsessing are unnecessary. When you're engaged in the dieting mindset, what you're searching for (weight loss) isn't the answer you need. What you truly desire is usually something like: worthiness, love, acceptance, energy, wellness, confidence, and more. And you can have ALL of those things without having to diet or be a certain size. Weight Gain Fears Sharing about intuitive eating and un-dieting isn't as simple as showing before and after pictures that show weight loss! After all, that's not the point of this lifestyle. So what attracts people to it, and what fears threaten to hold them back? Well, many women express lots of fears about possibly gaining weight if they give intuitive eating a try. Jenna shares that The Body Love Society approach is to remove the hyper-focused attention on weight. After all, many women have lived in that weight-based mindset for 10, 15, 25 years. Years! So if your biggest concern is weight gain, the first question for you to consider is... What has your obsession with weight given you so far? When you can recognize that it hasn't provided anything desirable so far, you're free to choose somewhere else to focus your time and energy. And remember: You're not just giving something up. You're gaining something too! With intuitive eating, your body may lose weight, gain weight, or stay the same. However, that is the LEAST interesting part of this journey. The newfound sense of freedom (and the dieting baggage you leave behind) is where the fun is! It can be scary to STOP focusing on something you've obsessed over for years... but it feels SO good once you finally let go. Consciously Make the Choice At some point, you can decide to change your mindset and refocus your life. Every single day you can shift your thoughts from control, restriction, fear, and obsession. Instead, you can choose to embrace freedom, self-love, courage, and acceptance of your body exactly as it is. Just a reminder - this is not about giving up on taking care of yourself. When intuitive eating, you still get to think about feeling good, and you're still taking care of yourself. You're just doing it from a place of self-care and compassionate listening, rather than pursuing weight loss as the magic cure. When you stop dieting, you might experience changes in your body. That's to be expected! Coming off of years worth of dieting is going to involve some shifting and recalibration. That's normal, and nothing to stress over! Let your body find its groove, and prioritize balance and self-care. Expect ups and down, and learn to listen to your body's needs through the process.

You can't find true wisdom from a textbook, but you can find it in this week's moment of Zen.  Moment of Zen  0:39  When you see a good person, Think of becoming like her or him. When you see someone not so good. Reflect on your own weak points.  Larry Burden  0:49  In an effort to develop a more professional palette, we've consulted the experts on how to better prepare, This, this week's meat of the show, making PD better professional development better. We've all been there. We have been into that session, and that keynote. Depends on your level of politeness. Do you sit through the whole session? Or do you get up and...  Danelle Brostrom  1:12  I sit through the session.  Larry Burden  1:14  I respect, see now I can go in and I'll have like a camera or something trying to get some shots are record it. And I have to go to the next session because I you know, I have to try to get a swath of information out of this, so. Danelle Brostrom  1:28  Yeah, but sometimes you can't choose. Sometimes you're stuck in that bad PD because that's the PD you have to take. And then you're stuck. Larry Burden  1:35  There is that yeah,  Danelle Brostrom  1:36  yeah, Larry Burden  1:36  The initial pod topic that I was going to talk about, Danelle Brostrom  1:39  that I ditched, Larry Burden  1:41  Which I thought was going to be a winner, because we're going to talk about your favorite subject, Liz Kolb. She had a keynote this year at WiredTC. And I was actually going to talk about her keynote and the fact that she did not...she wasted no time. She basically came up there. And it was it was a different, a different vibe than most keynotes that I've been to because she was basically like, I'm a professional, you're a professional, you're here to get some information from me, I am giving you that information. Let's do this. Let's act like professionals. And I was looking through some of the resources that you had brought up. And I'm like, Yeah, like that. Danelle Brostrom  2:22  Yeah, yeah, she was amazing. And, you know, the reason I ditched your topic, Larry, Matt Miller had a great post the other day on Twitter. And he's the writer of, "Ditch that Textbook." And he talked a lot about PD, and how sometimes it can be awful. And we've all sat through it. So he gave a ton of ideas on ways to make PD better, and then throw it out to the group. And it just kind of got me thinking that we do need to talk about this since the beginning of the year, and we're all a little rusty. So it's a good time to bring this back. And I'm guilty of this too, you know, you I've gone in and I've had so much information to present and very little time to do it. So I went wide instead of deep with a few topics. And I just, I bored them to death as I read from the slideshow, because I, I got nervous. And I knew I had a lot to cover. And, oh, ick, I hate that I falter to that if I'm not careful. So I think it's something to be aware of and really, really think about. And when you know better you do better. So Let's, let's go through some of these things.  Larry Burden  3:26  Make it useful.  Danelle Brostrom  3:26  Let's make it useful.  Larry Burden  3:27  So there's 21 I don't know if we're gonna make it through all 21.  Danelle Brostrom  3:29  No, I didn't want, I want to talk about the big ones. Larry Burden  3:33  Okay, the first you have one specific one, because I want your explanation on this. So Danelle Brostrom  3:38  The first one, I think he talked about this in a couple different ways. But I really think you need to think about your audience. And like you mentioned, Liz really did that she talked to her audience like they were professionals. But I think you need to find out where your audience is at, try to figure out what they're thinking, read your audience. Don't just read from your slideshow, look at them and kind of see how they're taking in the information. And I think just really trying to connect with them. So, you can ask them questions while you're there. You can try to ask them questions beforehand and a survey. But I think just finding out where your audience is coming from, and then trying to connect with them is like the number one thing you need to remember with doing PD, always.  Larry Burden  4:21  I have a feeling a lot of these are going to also apply to being a classroom teacher. It's kind of the same thing. It is kind of funny that oftentimes, especially in our field, the people that we're getting professional development, who are running these sessions are teachers, and then they get into this environment, and all those pedagogical... Danelle Brostrom  4:41  Good word  Larry Burden  4:42  Skills kind of seem to go, sometimes, tend to go out the window. So anyway, I just wanted to... Danelle Brostrom  4:47  No, I'm so glad you brought that up. Because yes, 100%. We are amazing educators and we deliver content to students in a way that is creative and interesting. And we make it fun. And we do all, we do it hands on, and then we get into PD mode and we go back to that lecture base. And I don't know why we forget all those things. You know, adults do learn differently. And there are some things that we can talk about at a later date. But for the most part, the adults deserve that same respect, and they should also...  Larry Burden  5:25  Taller children, with a shorter attention span. Danelle Brostrom  5:28  True, especially teachers. But they deserve that same respect. They deserve PD that is creative, and inspiring, and interesting, and hands on, and I think Jennifer Gonzales covered this in a Cult of Pedagogy podcast, a while ago. But, she said the same thing. Like, treated just like teaching. Make a hands-on, differentiate, use guided practice. Like all those things that you know how to do with children, do them with adults in PD to. And yes, we should 100% be doing that. Larry Burden  6:00  Got you off track, sorry. Danelle Brostrom  6:01  No, that was that was on track, always.  Larry Burden  6:04  One time, one time I kept us on track. Danelle Brostrom  6:08  And I think, I think and Matt Miller mentions this too, when he talks about giving them hands on practice, and giving them time to talk about what they're learning, and including a variety of examples. Like, again, all those are teacher tips that we shouldn't be doing. If, if you just deliver your content, and they never get a chance to talk about it. I think if you look at the research from Joyce and Showers, this resource on, research on coaching, but it's still says if you're just giving them theory all the time, it, only like five or 10% of the people are going to retain it and actually use it. So, you obviously want more than that, if you're taking the time to do a PD wasting everyone's, not wasting everyone's time, I did not mean that. But... Larry Burden  6:49  Maximizing their time. Danelle Brostrom  6:49  Maximizing their time, you have to make sure that you're doing more. You need to give them a chance to talk. You to give them a chance to try the tool with you there, walking around. Or just giving them a bunch of examples about how this, this can apply to these different situations. How can this apply to you as a third grade teacher? How Can this apply to you as an 11th grade teacher? Like how does this, how does this work? Like let's actually dive in and look at it instead of just, here's what I need to teach you. Larry Burden  7:18  Earlier, I had mentioned that, you know, Liz Kolb had kind of gone directly into the topic and into the research very quickly. It doesn't mean you have to ditch the narrative. It's okay to tell a story and include the learning in, in a story. That's going to be more compelling, it's going to be, oftentimes that the person that session, or listening to that keynote, is going to have five more that day. There's a lot of information coming in, you're going to have to have some kind of a hook for it to be retained. Danelle Brostrom  7:53  For sure. And I want to see us make PD more fun. Like, I sometimes I dread seeing those PD blocks on my calendar, those things that I have to go to because I think that it's going to be two hours or so that I'm going to be missing away from my family. How can, how can we make PD more fun? How could we, as presenters, could we, you know, change it up with a game or give them a short funny video. Like, when they're having fun, and research will tell us this one learning is enjoyable, better learning takes place. So, that goes for adults and for kids. So, never design a training you and want to set through yourself. You know, let's let's make it, Let's make it fun. Larry Burden  8:42  While then going back to what you had said, I think, your first point, have some empathy as well. Recognize that it has to be fun for you or something that you see as fun, but take yourself out of it for a second and recognize that other people might have different interests or different points of view, and at least have that level of empathy.  Danelle Brostrom  9:01  For sure.  Larry Burden  9:01  What else Danelle Brostrom  9:03  I really liked one of the topics or one of the tips that Matt Miller mentioned was to be your own unique self. And I think that this is something I really don't do. And I think it was something that I'd like to start. It just, he just talks about if you have a skill or talent, how can you use that to enhance your professional development? If You can sing or play an instrument? Could you create a song? If you can draw, or at least are willing to try, could you sketchnote your session as it's being presented? If you have a knack for making videos, make some of your own videos to include. I think that those are great ideas, because it just helps people connect with you. Especially if you're willing to be a little silly, or a little, a little different. I think that will help them remember what you're doing as well. Larry Burden  9:47  As long as you’re topical. Danelle Brostrom  9:48  Oh, of course. Larry Burden  9:49  As long as your on topic that, I think  Danelle Brostrom  9:51  100% Yes,  Larry Burden  9:52  I'm going to guess you're gonna get to this. No to Edutainment. If you're up there just trying to grandstand and look at my video that I made.  Danelle Brostrom  10:04  Right, right. Right. Right. Right,  Larry Burden  10:05  It might be compelling. But if it's, if it has nothing to do with your topic, or maybe kind of does. They're spending time with you, make sure that time is well used. Danelle Brostrom  10:16  Yes. 100%. Yes. And then the other one that I really thought was important. Just to keep the conversation going. They're, typically when you deliver a PD is something that you want them to do in their classrooms. So, how are you going to keep that conversation going, They're going to struggle, they're going to have, need, they're going to need you. They're going to need that group of learners that they learned with. So how do you keep that conversation going after? Do have them connect with you on Twitter? Do you have a Google Classroom setup so that way they can come on and ask questions later. It's just a nice way for people to have that recurring conversation and actually move the needle. Larry Burden  10:52  I don't know what this one was. I'm gonna throw it out there.  Danelle Brostrom  10:54  Yeah.  Larry Burden  10:55  Speed dating activity. I have not witnessed this. I don't know what it actually it was. It was in his list. Yes. Did you read it? And have you done it? In a professional development setting. Want to clarify. Danelle Brostrom  11:09  Going back, Larry, I did. I have done that before? I don't love that one. Honestly, unless I'm comfortable with the people around me. I don't always like... Larry Burden  11:21  Because you're such an introvert. I recognized Danelle Brostrom  11:23  sometimes I am. Sometimes, I don't know. Larry Burden  11:26  Every, everybody that knows you right now is like...right. Danelle Brostrom  11:29  You asked me. Sometimes I don't like it. Because sometimes I'm talking to people that I don't know about topics that I don't feel comfortable talking to people about. But I guess it gets people talking, which is what you want. You want people to be talking, you want them to have conversations, which it does. So Yes, Larry Burden  11:46  It would push me out of my comfort zone as well. But sometimes you do have to do, if you're going, if you're going to go to a professional development seminar or professional development situation, you should be willing to be pushed out of your comfort zone.  Danelle Brostrom  11:57  Yes, yes, yes. But there's also some ideas that I think that connect to this PD topic. Things that I personally want to try. Gamestorming is a new thing that's kind of been making the rounds within the ed tech leaders. And it's a way of looking at, it says it's a set of co-creation tools used by innovators around the world, is what it says on their website. But it's really just, it's games, games, for opening, games for fresh thinking and ideas, games for team building, game for vision and strategy building. And I think that a lot of these ideas that they use on the gamestorming site, could be very easily adapted to PD. So I'm, I know I'm ordering the playbook. So that way, I can have some more ideas on how to use these resources. But that's definitely something that I'm going to be doing some personal research on, because I think that could help enhance PD. And again, include that conversation, we got people talking. And then another thing I want to mention on the METS Group, the Michigan Educational Technology Specialist, they are doing a session at MyGoogle this year. And it's a workshop session. It's on November 4 in the morning. And it's, now it's made for ed tech coaches. It's a session on ed tech coaching. But man, if anybody, If anybody locally, I say locally, statewide, knows how to deliver a good PD. It's that METS Group, that's kind of their specialty. Every PD I've ever gone to, and anything I've done with that group, they've been amazing at making PD not stink. So I think if you want to go, even if you're not an ed-tech specialist, if you are in this coaching role, or you are in an administrative role, and you deliver a PD, go to this with with, with that lens. They're going to talk about gamestorming. And they're going to go through some different ideas on how to deliver PD better. But, also kind of watch them and how they deliver PD because I think that you can learn a lot sitting in something that is really, really good. Larry Burden  13:48  Not only take notes on the content, take notes on the presenter. Danelle Brostrom  13:50  Because they're going to be amazing. Yeah, I'm sure of it. They deliver amazing PD. And that's kind of their thing. So go and learn what they do.  Larry Burden  13:57  Anything else? Danelle Brostrom  13:58  I have nothing else on that.  Larry Burden  14:00  All right, Tech Tool of the Week.  Techtool of the Week  14:04  Kind of related, Remote for Slides. This is a game changer. It is a Chrome extension. So you add it on to your device. And then there's a website that you go to, and you go to that website on your phone, and then you can control your Google Slideshow through your phone. So all of a sudden bye bye clicker. I cannot tell you how many times I have lost, when I've been presenting out and... Larry Burden  14:35  What's it called?  Danelle Brostrom  14:35  without the dongle. I have lost that I've left it plugged into machines. And then I've had to go say to Mr. Hicks, I need a new clicker. And It's really embarrassing. But, all I do is I just pull it up on my phone, and then I can run through my Google slideshow from anywhere. And It's amazing. And it's kind of a game changer for those who deliver a lot of PD.  Larry Burden  14:56  If you're presenter that's...  Danelle Brostrom  14:58  Yeah, Larry Burden  14:59  Invariably your batteries are out. You forgot the dongles. Somebody else brings a clicker in, it doesn't quite work. It doesn't sync, it has to down, it has to download the app, it has ya know, firmware issues. It's always something that goes wrong with the clicker. So to actually have it on your phone and just bink, bink, bink. That's awesome. Danelle Brostrom  15:17  Crazy easy. Crazy fast to setup. I think, from when I found it to when I was rolling through walking around the office telling everyone I know hey, check this out, guys. Maybe like four minutes. It's amazing. Larry Burden  15:30  Tutorials and updates. We did a BiblioTech pod just a few days ago with Melissa Baumann on middle school libraries. That was really really interesting. Danelle Brostrom  15:39  The better Baumann, I like that. I listen. Larry Burden  15:42  Sorry, Andy. TechNollergist is actually up next week, first TechNollergist of the year. Very excited about that. I had a really interesting experience before I came down here and this is as far away from edu-tech as you could possibly get, I think. And it was a Stone Soup gathering. And I don't know if you're familiar with the Stone Soup parable, I'm sure everybody is, you've read the books. It's been around obviously for ever. But, an entire school, classroom, by classroom was going in and adding things to the big soup pot and you know, they put a stone in. Every, every class got to put one stone in. And it's a great way to A, incorporate the idea of sharing and caring into your school community. But also a great way to include the entire community, not just the school, but your local farmers. The school that we were at at had their own community gardens, so they actually used a lot of their own herbs and spices and things that they had grown. But we also had, they also had some local vendors come in and help with ingredients. It was fabulous. And they've done it for two years now. And it was neat to see the older students commenting on what it means. Any comments on Stone Soup? Your'e all, I wanted to be there. Danelle Brostrom  16:58  I did want to be there. Larry Burden  16:59  It smelled great by-the-way. Danelle Brostrom  17:00  It's a good reminder that it takes a team to make something awesome. Larry Burden  17:02  Yeah, yeah. Andrew Rappaport's Rapp Report Daily

Rapp Report Daily 0385 Is God Fair? Now, this often comes up when speaking of the extermination of the Canaanites, and somehow, God is not fair, that He would basically wipe out a whole group of people. Let us deal with the first issue of is God fair? Then we will deal with the Canaanites. So is God fair? Absolutely! He must be because of the very definition of what is fair comes from the nature of God. That is how we know what fair and unfair is, it comes from the very nature of God. Therefore, there is no way to even have a standard to judge what is fair and unfair without first precluding God. And the only absolute, universal standard that you can have to judge what something is fair is God Himself, His nature. So Yes, God is fair. But what about the Canaanites? Wiping out a whole group of people? That does not seem fair? Well, those Canaanites should have been killed? The moment they disobeyed God's law, they should have had justice. God was long-suffering with them, but they were so rebellious they ended up having even their children killed. Yes, even the animals. Yes, because they were so wicked. They were training children as young as four, five years old, to be raped to be having sex with animals. The animals did not know the difference between the animals would keep having sex with humans. The whole population had been wiped out because that was God's justice on a wicked population. Hello Friends… I’m so happy that you’ve joined me!  We’re going to dive into discovery together with my awesome, fun guests today- Denise Straiges and Alastair Gray   I often start the top of the show with a quote that I particularly like from the interview- and it typically isn’t me -BUT-  in this case, it seemed really apropos because some really cool connections followed my interview with Denise and Alastair that kind of illustrated what I was sharing in the quote about how I build my content organically.   Regular listeners may have listed to  my interview in August with Karen Allen E034- which was so fabulous and please take a listen if you haven’t yet- and in the interview Karen spoke about her Start up to Stellar class for homeopaths to create an outrageously successful practice.   She was gracious and generous and offered my listeners 25% off the class enrollment fee- such a beautiful gift which I did take advantage of, as I have been wanting to take that class for years.   So- I signed up for this cohort which just started this past weekend   (totally mind blowing first session- if you didn’t hop in this time, I’m sorry for you- honestly!- but join her mailing list for when the class opens again because its amazing and i’m only 2 hours in).   and I had recorded the interview with Denise and Alastair this past week. And as it goes- Karen referenced some of Alastair’s work he did on his Masters’ degree about what makes homeopaths successful, and in the class, with me,  are some of his students *and* 1M podcast listeners-   it was such a neat cross section of the homeopathy community, and I know we’re a small one, all things considered, and so it's not a HUGE coincidence, but I thought it was cool and wanted to share how these threads braided together over these 2 episodes for me.   I also wanted give share a little of that behind the scenes chat and how I do this, which, now you know, is very haphazard in an inspired kind of way :)   So- YES! Denise and Alastair. Listen- do yourselves a favor and follow their Facebook page if you are not already- at the Academy of Homeopathic Education, NY- World. They post all manner of fun and inspiring and educational bits. They are truly a dynamic duo- a very complimentary pair- you’ll hear in our interview how in sync they are with each other, and that harmonizing they do together obviously potentizes their work because WOW, so much is happening with them, for homeopathy, and for the benefit of the world, really, because of their heart and passion and smarts and experience. You can learn more about them individually at their Whole Health Now bios:  http://www.wholehealthnow.com/bios/denise-straiges.html http://www.wholehealthnow.com/bios/alastair-gray.html Denise's practice site Alastair's practice site  I love what they’re doing, and you’ll hear a bit in the interview that I’m pretty gung-ho to discuss educational philosophy- as I have many times here on the podcast- because it is also where my heart is, next to actually practicing.  Alastair shared his thoughts about the technology of education now, and it's so relevant. I’ve mentioned before, I think, on the show that my husband is a consultant. And he was at a meeting this last week at a University. We talk a lot about our work and he was telling me that the University is being challenged because a majority of their students fill out their application forms -to college- on their mobile devices. And, they are writing papers on mobile devices! And here, so many institutions have invested millions of dollars in their platforms and what have you, but they have to be optimized for mobile- at least, that was my take-away. How do they make this shift from having put so much energy and resources into the desktop and online experience, into mobile? I think its more complex than that, but that was one point.   Now- some people may think this is weird, or not understand this. Why would people be using phones, if they can use a computer? And I started thinking- you know, I am of the generation that got the first computers as kids. We grew up with the Apple2cs (bear with me- i’m going somewhere with this, its relevant I promise!) and Commodore 64s. Smart phones didn’t come around until I already had kids.   But MY kids, have had smart phones in their lives for as long as they can remember. As far as they are concerned, a computer is a tablet, is a phone. They don’t have this investment in a computer base. Why would you be tethered to a machine plugged into a wall, if you can do the same thing with something in your pocket the size of a wallet? THIS is our world. THESE are our future homeopaths. Not to mention the fact that in low income families, if there is access to the internet at all, its likely though a mobile device. Computers are still expensive. Mobile devices are not.   Think about the effort of Jeremy Sherr in Tanzania and HWB in Haiti- places where we often hear that people don’t have access to adequate food often, or medicine, but there are mobile phones. Just think about that. What that means for education, and access. YES, people need food and water- no question. But if we as homeopaths understand how these devices and technology can assist us in providing homeopathic education and tools and services-I know the Tanzania project uses Firefly, a mobile repertory app that I also recently downloaded and am trying to find my way around— it’s essential that some of us are working the field in this way.   I believe that homeopathy is the medicine of the past present and future, and the present and future are indisputably, integrated with technology.   Listen, sometimes a scoffing of technology, or a wistfulness of the good old days of pre-smart phone and computers is heavy in the mix with alternative and natural trends, and I understand the concerns there, but if we can leverage technology to bring homeopathy through the 21st and into the  22nd century stronger than ever before, I bet that all of you listening, are behind that.   So- that is just ONE REASON why I am so excited to bring you this conversation with Alastair and Denise because they are on the leading edge of this *and* holding onto the heart of homeopathy and our history while they do it. And finally- I have a queue of awesome shows coming up. In fact, I might end up putting out some extra mid-month shows because I don’t want to hold on to them for too long

Hey everyone! Welcome back to episode number 84 of the Fitlandia Podcast. We are rounding out the month with the announcement of The Mind Zoning Academy. If you are having ANY challenges with mental obstacles, then this is the place for you. Every single month I am doing a LIVE webinar with me that is one part focusing on a mental obstacle, one part guided meditation, and one part group coaching so you can learn how to apply these principle and strategies to your life and keep moving forward on your fitness journey. To sign up, you can head over to fitlandiafitness.com/mind-zoning and you will be able to register for either the webinar version or the in person version with me held in Portland, Oregon. Everyone that registers will get a playback of the webinar itself, as well as professionally mixed Mind Zoning session so you can listen to it over and over again whenever you need it. TODAY, I am going to talk to you about Ending Body-shaming and Fat-shaming so that we aren’t hating and self loathing anymore, which really prevents us from getting all the health benefits we are looking for. With that, on to the show! My goal with today’s episode is that I give you enough education and insight to start intellectualizing more what is happening in your body with food and movement and mood and end the body and fat-shaming cycle that is NOT serving your fitness goals...it is really holding you back. When people come to 30 Days to Thriving Program, I would say that every single one of them have the intention of weight-loss. I like to make sure that they leave the program more focused on health and vitality and improvement in all areas of their life. Whether that is their resting heart rate or their blood pressure or their blood sugar levels, whatever it is that is also going to support them, rather than simply focusing on weight loss. But inevitably, we still live in a culture that is very much focused on body image and the shape that we are in and having ripped abs and being cut...and even I myself find that I am pinching and poking at myself. It is not something to hide from, but something to explore and understand what is really going on. More importantly, I hope that you can start to end body and fat-shaming today because really, our bodies are miraculous and beautiful and incredible and we come in ALL shapes and sizes! And part of our journey is accepting that. What I first want to start out with is a little bit of understanding about when we fat-shame someone. We’ve all heard it or done it. Whether it is something like, “Hey, put the cookie down,” or “Go for a walk,” or “Quit being so lazy.” I just want to say this first and foremost: to anyone who has been fat shamed, I am SO sorry that that has happened to you. I know that it is a very painful experience, I’ve experienced it myself, even people yelling out on the street to me, and I just have to say this: they are ignorant...they are completely ignorant. Not only is that a cruel thing to say something but they also lack the knowledge to understand what is happening in the body. So let’s back up a little bit first and talk about out of control eating, emotional eating, and what leads us to a lot of weight gain. We have this beautiful part of our brain, our reptilian brain, that is always trying to keep us safe. Then we have the prefrontal cortex that says, “Hey, I know I need to be moving everyday and I know I need to be cooking healthy meals.” But then there is that part of us that just can’t execute on it, right?! All of our good intentions, at the end of the day, is to cook a healthy meal and we are grabbing a cupcake or grabbing a bottle of wine, whatever it is! And that is because our primal brain is literally just trying to keep us safe. We have a lot of stress in our day, we have a lot of emotions that many of us haven’t dealt with, traumas and triggers from childhood that haven’t yet healed, and so our primal brain is kicking in to make us feel safe. And the ways that it knows to do that is to fire up the pleasure center in our brain and that usually comes in the form of sugar, refined carbs and alcohol. Whatever kind of addictive behavior that means. For some people, it’s drug abuse, for some people, it’s gambling or a sex addiction...but our brain is trying to find a way to serve us. But bringing it back to Fitlandia and my audience, most of us are struggling with an emotional connection to food. What we also don’t realize is that a lot of the processed foods that we consume are actually geared to make us addicted to it...and we might not even know that! For some of you, this might be the first time that you’re hearing that processed foods are made to be addictive and make us crave more of them. So when I say that it isn’t your fault, it truly isn’t your fault if you lack that knowledge and don’t know how to get out of it, then you can’t blame yourself for it, you can’t shame yourself for it, you can’t hate on yourself for it when your brain is designed to keep you safe. So, that’s just one tip of the iceberg, we could do a LOT of education in food addiction alone to help support you, but now it’s the “What’s Next?” right? What do I need to do to move forward on my journey? If I have this one little sprinkle of knowledge today that my brain is trying to keep me safe so I’m craving and firing up that rewards center in my brain and oh, by the way, what I’m eating is keeping me in an addictive pattern...now what? And that’s where my 30 Days to Thriving program comes in. We actually do a food elimination program of the commonly addictive foods, the inflammatory foods, that are going to help you do a body reset. But I also call it a nutrition and mindset program because we also help you reshape your thoughts around craving a lifestyle of health that is sustainable. So during that process, and the program while you’re learning how food is processed in the body, how to make good choices, how to break that craving cycle, that addiction cycle, learning how to starve the bad bacteria in the gut so you get out of this incessant craving need. Also comes this opportunity to really love on your body as it is TODAY...and I know for a lot of you, that’s a really tough one to swallow. We are programmed to hate on ourselves...we motivate ourselves through this shaming process and I want to get us out of that because when we shame our body, we actually keep it in this same state that it’s in. Many of you have heard the quote, “What we resist, persists. And where our attention flows, that’s what we create.” So if we are constantly looking at our body, looking at what we don’t like, we are actually feeding our brain to maintain that. So what I’m going to be teaching in the Mind Zoning Academy for July, is actually how to end that shaming cycle. It doesn’t matter what weight you are at, what your shape is, where your goals are and what you want to achieve, I’m going to walk you through a beautiful meditation that teaches you how to really appreciate your body as it is today. And I can’t stress this enough...it is a critical component in long-term weight loss, health, and vitality. Being able to accept your body today, while at the same time, lovingly release the weight, the guilt, the shame, the triggers, the trauma, everything, that got you to this point. So, I’m going to speak to the exercise that you can do at home BUT I hope you’ll all join me for this Mind Zoning Academy, because when we are in that relaxed, focused, meditative state, our brain slows down and we are actually able to access our subconscious mind much more readily so that we CAN start to change these thought patterns. So YES, do this exercise everyday, but also sign up for the Mind Zoning Academy at fitlandiafitness.com/mind-zoning so that you can also experience the meditation BUT you will also get a professionally mixed version of the recording too so you can play it over and over again. Okay, so here’s how it works: Stand in front of a mirror every morning, make it a habit, let’s say, when you are brushing your teeth. Usually, we are in the bathroom brushing our teeth, most of us have a mirror in front of us, it’s a great time to look yourself in the mirror, look at yourself in the eyes and say, “I love you today, as you are, while we are making these changes. I accept every part of you, today, while we make these changes.” And then do a scan from head to toe, focusing on gratitude, and being mindful of everything you love about yourself and your body. And it goes something like this… “Oh, I LOVE my forehead, and the wrinkles that are there just show the joy that I’ve experienced in my life. I like the color of my eyes. I am grateful that I had braces in my teenage years for a straight smile. I love the development I am getting in my shoulders for the strength that I have. I love that my arms are getting stronger everyday to lift more and feel muscle tone and strength, but I accept where it is today. I love my core and my torso, even with my rolls and the extra fat and tissue that I have, I love that my body is still moving everyday, that I have growing flexibility and strength. I love my hips, that I can get out on a dance floor and shake it! I love my quads, that are SO strong. They are the strongest part of my body. That get me out of bed everyday, that get me moving, that walk me to every task that I do. I love my calves that are also getting stronger and connect my quds to my ankles and my feet. And my feet, ah my feet! That bear the load of my entire body and still keep me moving forward. I thank you body, I honor you body, as you are today and as we are moving forward to grow our strength and vitality.” So that is how the exercise goes. Like I said, when we are doing this in the Mind Zoning Academy, we will take time to get really relaxed. We will do a progressive relaxation technique that helps us loosen the muscles in our body and really get into it and FOCUS on this wonder that our bodies are! That we get to move everyday! That we get to celebrate what IS good about our body and end the fat-shaming and the, “I wish I was this, I need to be that, I hate that I’m this.” We need to END that and make a practice of it, so that it isn’t holding us back to getting to our ideals and goals and dreams that we have for ourselves. Because really, we are a walking miracle everyday. OUr heart is beating, our brain is thinking, we are seeking new opportunities and we are executing action in our lives and THAT is something to celebrate in our lives. So, I will leave you with that positive energy. I can’t wait to see you all in either the webinar or live in Portland for ANY of the Mind Zonings because we are going to be doing this every single month so head over to fitlandiafitness.com/mind-zoning, sign up for the the next Mind Zoning Academy and I will see you all soon!
