Nathan Runkle would have been a fifth-generation farmer in his small Midwestern town. Instead, he founded our nation’s leading nonprofit organization for protecting factory-farmed animals Mercy For Animals. In his new book, Mercy For Animals, Nathan brings us into the trenches of his organization’s work; from MFA’s early days in grassroots activism to dangerous and dramatic experiences doing undercover investigations to the organization’s current large-scale efforts at making sweeping legislative change to protect factory-farmed animals and encourage compassionate food choices. But this isn’t just Nathan’s story. Mercy For Animals examines how our country moved from a network of small local farms with more than 50 percent of Americans involved in agriculture to a massive coast-to-coast industrial complex controlled by a mere 1 percent of our population—and the consequences of this drastic change for animals as well as our global and local environments. We also learn how MFA strives to protect farmed animals in behind-the-scenes negotiations with companies like Nestlé and other brand names—conglomerates whose policy changes can spare countless lives and strengthen our planet. Since founding MFA over a decade ago, Nathan has overseen the organization's growth into a leading international force in the prevention of cruelty to farmed animals and promotion of compassionate food choices and policies. Imagine a world free of cruelty, a world in which we nurture our bodies, minds, and spirits with wholesome, healthy food that is kind to animals and sustainable for our planet. MFA believes that world is possible. In fact, it is inevitable if we work together to elevate humanity to its fullest potential.  Tune in. Be inspired.

Cows, pigs, and hens are sentient beings, just as intelligent as we are. They feel loss, love, pain, shame, fear, and solidarity. They want to be free, nurture their young, and play. Yet the factory farming industry is built with total disregard for these animals’ needs. It’s all about maximizing profits. The good news is that there are amazing people doing ground-breaking work to expose animal abuse and change legislation.  Cody Carlson heard about Mercy For Animals when he was a private investigator for a business intelligence firm. Moved by their work, he reached out to the founder, Nathan Runkle (check out his episode). Before he knew it, Cody had quit his job, grown a goatee and become an undercover animal rights investigator. It was a wild ride. Working undercover as a farm hand is exhausting physical work and emotionally intense. He witnessed how over 4,000 cows were kept constantly pregnant, saw newborn calves torn from their mothers and left to die, or sold for slaughter. He saw how much the animals wanted to play, to be loved. His footage of workers’ cruelty and the atrocities committed in the farm was broadcast by the media and resulted legislation that changed how these animals are treated. And that was it. He was hooked. He went to law school and is now one of Mercy for Animal’s attorneys. Part of the work Cody is doing with Mercy For Animals is overturning ag-gag laws. Instead of reforming, the animal farming industry lobbies to amend legislation and keep their inhumane practices within the law. From around 2010, ag-gag laws made it a crime to conduct undercover investigations that reveal what goes on in factory farms. Mercy For Animals is winning the fight against ag-gag laws, but some states still have them: Montana, Utah, North Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and North Carolina. If you’re a resident of one of these states, you can help overturn these laws by contacting your local representative and encouraging them to speak out.   Are we ever going to see a world without slaughter houses? YES! With the rise of plant-based milks, dairy profits are plummeting. With growing public support, a radical movement away from meat and towards plant-based eating, changes in legislation and corporate policy, and delicious plant-powered options, we’re going to see the end of factory farming in our lifetimes. Additionally we can all be healthier, protect the environment, help the animals, and feel better than we’ve ever felt by ditching factory-farmed meats and adding more plants to our diets. What can you do today to help the animals? Contact your law-maker and encourage them to speak out about animal cruelty and ag-gag laws. Join an animal activism group. Mercy For Animals is the leading international farm animal protection organization. You can sign up on the website and check out how you can get involved. Share Cody’s video of footage of how dairy and animals are produced in modern farms. You can check out the viral video at http://www.whatcodysaw.com/. Join Hen Heroes to take part in animal activism. Reach out to the Oink writers’ group if you want to get involved with writing letters to the editor and raising awareness. If you’re a California resident, you can help get legislation passed that would change the game for animals raised in California. Half a million signatures are needed—you can volunteer at com/volunteer to sign up. Please share the link with your friends! You can also donate. Donations help Mercy For Animals run undercover investigations and petition for real change in animal protection legislation.  Cody and Leslie’s tips to eat healthier and plant-based wherever you live: Veganize your meal when you eat out (for example, you can order Denny’s scrambled egg platter and swap the eggs for potatoes). Stop eating processed foods. Eat real, whole foods. Always look at the ingredient list. If it doesn’t read like a recipe, put it down.   This is our last episode of 2017… happy almost new year!! “It’s not just about being against cruelty. It’s about being for compassion.” Nathan RunkleReared on a farm in rural Ohio, Nathan Runkle's connection with farm animals runs deep. So deep, he always knew his life would center around the protection and care of these sentient beings. After a local farmed animal abuse case involving a piglet slammed headfirst into a concrete floor during an agriculture project at a nearby high school, Nathan founded Mercy For Animals to give “food” animals a much-needed advocate in his local community. He was just 15 years old.Today, Nathan is the very person he was always meant to be: a world renown animal rights advocate; a nationally recognized speaker; and the man who has tactfully shepherded Mercy For Animals from that high school project into a leading international force in the prevention of cruelty to farmed animals and the promotion of compassionate food choices and policies.Named one of the country’s “Top 20 Activists Under 30 Years Old” and the youngest person ever inducted into the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame (he was 25), Nathan has been featured in hundreds of prominent media outlets and has spent decades working alongside elected officials, corporate executives, heads of international organizations, academics, farmers, celebrities, and film producers to pass landmark legislation and implement animal welfare policy changes.Nathan is also the author of the new and aptly titled, Mercy For Animals*. A fascinating call-to-action memoir, the book chronicles Nathan’s personal story from grassroots activist to global animal rights leader while elucidating the history and current state of U.S. factory farming and animal welfare; the environmental and human health implications of food policy; and the compassionate future he envisions.Today I go deep with someone who always knew exactly who he wanted to be and what he wanted to do with his life.We dig into Nathan's early interest in animal welfare, the founding of MFA in his teens and the undercover work that followed. We discuss the current state and implications of factory farming on animal, human and planetary health. And we review the regulatory landscape that governs our food systems and the implications of the clean meat movement on the future of food. But ultimately, this is a conversation about being who you are. It's about turning compassion into action. It's about the ethical and environmental implications of our daily food choices. And it's about the power we all hold to create change and forge a more compassionate and sustainable world for generations to come. For the visually inclined, the video version of the podcast is also available on YouTube.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Soundcloud | See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Every second, 300 animals are killed for food. These animals are the ghosts of our food machine. Tortured, exploited, abused and murdered, farm animals are voiceless and unable to defend themselves which is why we need to stand up for them. That’s exactly what today’s guest, Nathan Runkle, has dedicated his life to doing. No one would stand by and watch a puppy or kitten get slammed head first into the ground yet that’s exactly what happens to piglets. It’s considered a standard agricultural practice and as such, is exempt from animal cruelty charges. The law doesn’t provide protection for “food animals” however, the only difference between pets and animals for slaughter is our perception. Some are simply unfortunate enough to be born as a species that society says doesn’t matter. Nathan grew up on a farm in a small town. At 15 years old, after witnessing the brutal murder of a piglet, he founded Mercy for Animals. He started by carrying out open rescues: going into farms’ undercover and rescuing injured animals. Trawling through manure pits, witnessing first-hand the cruel conditions, and investigating the horror of slaughterhouses made him even more determined to give animals a voice and drive positive change in the world. Today, Mercy for Animals is an internationally recognized organization dedicated to animal rights and putting an end to the cruel and unsustainable factory farming industry. Let’s face it, slaughterhouses don’t have a place in a humane, peaceful world. In order for us to survive as a species, we need to switch to a plant-based diet. The good news is that on top of a growing vegan movement, cellular agriculture is growing quickly—it won’t be too long before clean meat (meat without murder) makes it to supermarket shelves! Nathan has just written a book entitled “Mercy for Animals” to inspire people to take action on behalf of farm animals. It tells the story of the unsung heroes of the animal advocacy movement who risk their lives, physical safety and emotional wellbeing to shine a light in some of the darkest places in our society. This book will empower you and show you how you can make a difference to animals and help create a kinder, more sustainable world. Get involved! Here are some of Nathan’s tips for animal advocacy: • How you can live your own values to the fullest? How can you embody loving compassion and respect? • Adopt a vegan diet—it’s the best thing to do to help planet and the animals. • How can you be more proactive in driving change? • Get involved in animal rights: animals can’t lobby for new laws; we need to do that for them. Check out Mercy for Animals for initiatives. • Use social media to spread information, hold companies accountable, and demand change. • Find your own unique voice; use your own perspective and talents to drive change for animals. Make donations. Money is energy. Taking on the 1 trillion-dollar global meat industry takes resources. Animal rights organizations need support. We also learn how MFA strives to protect farmed animals in behind-the-scenes negotiations with companies like Nestlé and other brand names—conglomerates whose policy changes can save countless lives and strengthen our planet. Alongside this unflinching snapshot of our current food system, readers are also offered hope and solutions—big and small—for ending mistreatment of factory farmed animals. From simple diet modifications to a clear explanation of how to contact corporations and legislators efficiently, Mercy For Animals proves that you don't have to be a hardcore vegan or an animal-rights activist to make a powerful difference in the lives of animals. Pigs, cows, chickens, fish, and other farmed animals are smart and unique individuals just like the dogs and cats we share our homes with. But behind the closed doors of modern farms they endure brutal cruelty. Most spend their entire lives in dark, crowded, waste-filled sheds. Some are locked in cages so small they can barely turn around. Because many animal cruelty laws do not protect them, farmed animals are often beaten, mutilated, and painfully slaughtered. Book Link:  Together, we can expose and end this abuse. Join us in helping protect farmed animals by inspiring compassionate food choices and policies.

Raised on a farm in rural Ohio, Nathan has long had a deep connection with farmed animals. After a local farmed animal abuse case involving a piglet slammed headfirst into a concrete floor during an agricultural project at a nearby high school, Nathan founded MFA to give "food" animals a much-needed advocate in his local community. Since founding MFA over a decade ago, Nathan has overseen the organization's growth into a leading international force in the prevention of cruelty to farmed animals and promotion of compassionate food choices and policies. A nationally recognized speaker on animal advocacy, factory farming, and veganism, Nathan has presented at colleges, conferences, and many other forums from coast to coast. Through his work with MFA, Nathan has been an outspoken advocate for animal rights, featured in hundreds of television, radio, and newspaper interviews, including on ABC's World News Tonight, Nightline, and 20/20, CNN, and National Public Radio, and in USA Today, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune. Nathan works closely with MFA's diverse group of members, supporters, and employees to develop and fulfill objectives within the organization's four areas of focus: education, legal advocacy, corporate outreach, and undercover investigations. Nathan has worked alongside elected officials, corporate executives, heads of international organizations, academics, farmers, celebrities, and film producers to pass landmark farmed animal protection legislation, raise public awareness about vegetarianism, and implement animal welfare policy changes. VegNews magazine has recognized both MFA and Nathan for making substantial contributions to the vegetarian movement, naming Nathan one of the "25 Most Fascinating Vegetarians" and one of the country's "Top 20 Activists Under 30 Years Old," and twice naming MFA "Non-Profit of the Year." In 2009, at the age of twenty-five, Nathan became the youngest person ever inducted into the US Animal Rights Hall of Fame.
