Every day, billions of people consume animal products without considering the impact on their health, the environment, and animals. Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, celebrated advocate and bestselling author, dedicates her life to unraveling this disconnection. Known as the "Joyful Vegan," she has transformed countless lives through her books, podcasts, and innovative approaches to promoting compassion and ethical living. On the NHA Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Colleen shared her personal journey and the pivotal moments that shaped her commitment to a plant-based lifestyle. From her early experiences to her groundbreaking projects, Colleen offers a blueprint for creating a more compassionate world. The Social Disconnect: Why Compassion Is Suppressed From childhood, most people are taught to love animals through stories, toys, and films. Yet, these same animals often appear on dinner plates, leading to a subconscious compartmentalization of compassion. This societal norm not only numbs empathy but also perpetuates harm on a massive scale. Colleen explores this phenomenon in her work, helping people recognize and reconcile this internal conflict. Pivotal Moments: The Journey to Advocacy Colleen's journey began with a profound awakening sparked by reading Diet for a New America by John Robbins and later Slaughterhouse by Gail Eisnitz. These books exposed the grim realities of industrial farming and the culture of violence it perpetuates. These experiences led her to align her values with her actions, igniting her passion for advocating for animals and ethical living. A Multi-Faceted Approach to Advocacy Through her seven bestselling books, including The Joyful Vegan, and her long-running Food for Thought podcast, Colleen provides practical tools and inspiration for those seeking to make more compassionate choices. Her Joyful Vegan Trips further illustrate how plant-based living can be abundant, joyful, and culturally enriching, breaking down myths about veganism being restrictive or inaccessible. Upcoming Projects and Expanding Impact Colleen's upcoming book, A Year of Compassion: 52 Weeks of Living Zero Waste, Plant-Based, and Cruelty-Free, set to release in March 2025, is a comprehensive guide for anyone seeking to live more ethically and sustainably. This work reflects her ongoing commitment to empowering individuals with knowledge and practical steps to align their values with their daily lives. A Call to Action Colleen's message is simple yet powerful: Start where you are. Change doesn't have to be all or nothing. Small, consistent steps toward reducing harm and embracing compassion can lead to transformative outcomes for individuals, animals, and the planet. In this episode, host Colleen Patrick-Goudreau dives into the complex but crucial task of understanding why people vote the way they do—and what that means for how we advocate for animals. In it, she shares insights into the psychological differences between conservative and progressive mindsets explores how these perspectives shape beliefs and actions and discusses how we can use this understanding to refine our message for animals She looks at ways to engage with people whose views and choices may challenge us, all while prioritizing our mental well-being and staying true to our values. By understanding the stories people tell themselves and the fears and values that drive them, we can communicate more effectively, craft impactful campaigns, and create meaningful, lasting change for the animals and the causes we care about. —————— Join our awesome community and support this podcast through Patreon or as an Apple Subscriber for bonus material, early access to episodes, and other perks, depending on the option you choose. In today's episode, host Colleen Patrick-Goudreau talks all about omega-3s—those essential fats we all need for heart, brain, and overall health. But here's the catch: instead of getting them through fish, which has ethical, environmental, and health concerns, we can go straight to the source: marine plants like algae. Omega-3s aren't included in a regular blood panel, so we'll dive into why it's important to get tested, what the optimal levels are, and why you don't want to fall below them. Let's get into it! Colleen Patrick Goudreau lives a life of compassion. She has compassion for animals, which influenced her to choose a vegan lifestyle (on which she is a leading authority). She has compassion for other people, which influenced the message she spreads to the world. In this episode, Colleen and I have a powerful conversation on the practice of manifestation, self compassion and the truth behind how we make a difference in this world (spoiler: you are ALWAYS making a difference, the question is whether you're providing value or taking it away). Eric Lindstrom once ate 68 chicken wings in one sitting. Today, he works full-time in animal advocacy and has written two books on veganism. What changed? The self-proclaimed carnivore adopted a plant-based diet over a bet with his wife. While he admittedly grumbled the whole time, what was intended to be a 30-day health kick turned into a lifelong passion. Once Eric discovered that he didn't have to give up his favorite meaty, cheesy foods, he stopped grumbling and embraced the plant-based way of life. With his relatable personality and relaxed humor, Eric encourages others to adopt a plant-based diet by illustrating its bounty of delicious options and its accessibility. A father of two young children, Eric also helps parents navigate a family-wide switch to plant-based. Tune in for some laughs, insight, and practical tips to make the switch. “The first third of my life, I was eating animals. I was unapologetic about it. It was part of my culture. It was part of my upbringing. It was part of my every day, and Alexandria almost half joking about meat-eating a hippo because I ate a lot of weird and exotic animals and thought nothing of it. And so at, I think, around the age of 43, 42, or 43, I made the switch overnight to 100% plant-based vegan diet and haven't looked back. So yeah, I wouldn't need a hippo tonight. I would love to get a hippo hug, though. Sounds like that's too dangerous, though. You were, but I mean, you're not just you're even your average meat eater because, in one sitting, you ate 68 chicken wings. So you were you're a meat eater and proud of it.” – Eric Lindstrom What we discuss in this episode: Eric's past as an adamant meat-loving omnivore and his “reluctance” to go plant-based. The bet between him and his wife that triggered his overnight adoption of the plant-based diet—and how he only thought it would be 30 days instead of the rest of his life. The book that sparked Eric's curiosity about diet change—Colleen Patrick Goudreau's The 30-Day Vegan Challenge. What to eat if you live in a rural area and don't have access to alternative foods? The bounty of plant-based options available in stores and online, including Eric's favorite products—Tinkyada Gluten-Free Pasta and Bob's Red Mill Protein Powder. Basic kid-friendly family meal ideas. Eric's two books—The Skeptical Vegan and The Smart Parent's Guide to Raising Vegan Kids. Send us a voice message and ask a question. We want to hear from you! The work of fighting to make the world a better place for all sentient beings can be fraught with adversity, leaving even the most resolute of us disheartened at times. Always optimistic, extremely persuasive, and very quotable, we are super thrilled to welcome her to the show today! “We have cognitive dissonance, and that means we're having difficulty holding two ideas at the same time. And that creates dissonance. That creates discomfort. And in order to reconcile that discomfort, we have to either change our behavior or we have to change our thinking about our behavior. And so that's what we do when it comes to the animals we love and the animals we eat.” - Colleen Patrick-Goudreau What we discuss in this episode: Colleen's upbringing and how she became vegan. How we become conditioned to eat meat, and how we can change our behavior. Why some people experience fear when considering a plant-based diet. Colleen's tips for anyone considering going vegan. Click here for the show notes:In today's episode, we'll be talking to Sofie and Tony who founded and run an elephant sanctuary, in fact, the first-ever Elephant Sanctuary in Europe. Seb and I met Tony and Sofie way back in 2018 when we went to visit The Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary in France. We had been in contact with Tony asking if our group might visit the sanctuary for our Dordogne trip in 2020 and if we might visit during a scout. They kindly agreed to show us around one beautiful spring day and what a lovely day it was. Now, I should add, that at this time, there were no elephants at the sanctuary yet. They spent a couple of hours showing us what they had built so far, their story, and their goal to try to be a place where elephants will live the rest of their lives in a much better situation than they were before. As usual, Seb and I were in absolute awe of the work these people are doing. Of course that Dordogne trip in 2020 did not go ahead, but we have actually rebooted that trip and you could be visiting this sanctuary, a sanctuary that is not open to the public on our trip on our A Taste Of The French Countryside: Romantic Villages & Valleys with Colleen Patrick-Goudreau that is happening in September 2023! This trip still has a few spots available and you can join us and visit The Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary in France and meet Gandhi and Delhi! In this episode, we discussHow Sofie and Tony got involved in animal protectionWhy there is a need for an elephant sanctuary in Europe Why they decided to create this space for elephantsWhat their long-term goals are for this sanctuary
If you are a regular listener you are going to realize that this episode is a little different! First of all it is not edited at all and there isn't even music or show notes for this episode. So why? I really wanted to create a little 2022 travel reflections and 2023 travel intentions episode and to release it just before the new year so that hopefully you will be inspired for your travel! I normally record my podcasts in advance especially when traveling, but I wanted to record this close to release because I knew that many of our reflections and favorites would be from my travel right at the end of the year and I wanted to make sure that they would be in the running but the tradeoff is that I cannot edit it as I normally would. At the time of recording this introduction, we have two of our 4 Africa trips. We said goodbye to our Botswana one folks and tomorrow we welcome our Garden Route travelers and after that, we'll have one more Botswana trip before heading home. IIn this episode, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau and her husband David Goudreau are my guests and they will share their 2022 travel reflections and 2023 travel intentions.I do want take this time to thank you, the listeners who have been listening in to this podcast in 2022! I am so grateful to every single one of you who has listened to an episode, subscribed or shared the podcast with people they know. I am so grateful to you! The World Vegan Travel team wish you an amazing 2023! Thank you!

Colleen Patrick-Goudreau says the huge amounts of food waste generated by people can have dire consequences for animals.
Colleen Patrick-Goudreau looks at how we remember the animals we have loved.
Millions of people are choosing veganism all over the world. They value their health, have compassion for animals, and are concerned about the environment, and yet despite the personal benefits they experience, a lot of people revert back to eating meat dairy and eggs. Why is that? I have been looking forward to this episode since the creation of my podcast. One of my most passionate topics is this conversation surrounding why people stop being vegan, how vegans respond to people who stop being vegan, how non vegans use the stories of ex-vegans as proof of justification for this or that, the complexities of our own experiences that shape our decisions, and so on. To break down this topic, I shared a conversation with Colleen Patrick-Goudreau who is not only a decades long OG vegan, but also a thought leader on the social, ethical, and practical aspects of living compassionately and healthfully. She's a speaker, cultural commentator, podcaster, and author of many books, including “The Joyful Vegan: how to stay vegan in a world that wants you to eat meat, dairy, and eggs” and her perspective on the many common reasons why people stop being vegan are compelling. In this episode we cover What the data shows is the main reason people stop being vegan - is it health reasons or more social and cultural? The social and cultural pressures that impact our lifestyle choices feeling the pressure (often self inflicted) to be perfect What being realistic about food and health looks like The double standard that our society holds plant-based eaters and their health to compared to any other way of eating Breaching values and sabotaging goals in the process The problems with ex-vegan stories - both how they are presented and how people respond to them Anecdotes & social media influencers who quit being vegan if I ever consider stopping being vegan when plant-based diets don't work our biological design to thrive Why you'll never see videos called “why I quit the ancestral diet” or “why I quit the paleo diet” Health is so much more than just food Division & hatred on both sides the hidden complexities of our modern day agriculture system if vegans' righteous anger when people fail to meet their expectations is justified or helpful Loving everyone through their own journeys, stories, and no matter how they choose to eat. It's a book about joy, yes, but joy as a strategic imperative in a world that is relentless in trying to undermine our resolve about living compassionate and brave lives.
