July Exhibition runs July 6th - 10th I am very excited to share with you yet another fascinating chat with a wonderful artist, Amanda Beck. Amanda's story is one of a true love of painting and sketching from life, with a commitment to capturing the essence and the energy of her subject. Amanda's journey and career with art is very inspiring, as is her attitude to making her own opportunities and really going for the things she sets her sights on. We also talk plenty about the art of visual story telling, as well as both the joys and frustrations of working form life. A very different angle on creating income as an artist, whilst developing your own practice, we talk about Amanda's recently successful Arts Council Grant to do exactly this. If you’ve ever been stressed, drink caffeine, had gut issues, wanted more energy, been depressed or felt like your hormones were out of balance, you’ll want to hear what my friend Amanda the @hormonehealongrd has to say about minerals today! We talk about Amanda’s experience with a PCOS diagnosis and increase of symptoms that came to a head 6 years after her copper IUD was placed. We talk about what symptoms appear when minerals are compromised and dive into each macromineral: sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium. We talk about thyroid issues, athletic performance, nervous system, foods rich in minerals and how to test for mineral issues. Amanda Montalvo is a women’s health dietitian that helps women get to the root cause of hormone imbalances and have healthy menstrual cycles. Amanda started off her education in nutrition with the traditional route, but after dealing with her own health problems after getting off hormonal birth control she quickly realized the value of functional medicine. After healing her acne, balancing her hormones, and learning the value of her menstrual cycle, Amanda found her purpose—to help women create a body in balance and not settle for anything less. This episode is sponsored by 88 Acres. The bird, bird, bird... Amanda Bird is the word and she is also here on the pod this week talking rescue dogs, new mental illness diagnoses and, of course, birds!  We start our school day off talking famous Bird's. Bird's like the last name Bird, not the animal. By the way, do you know what position Larry Bird played? $5 goes to the first person who emails us with the correct answer! And.. go! Next, Lindsey takes us to Health class where we get down and dirty and talk about everyone's favorite thing to talk about... menstruation! Periods. We are talking periods, people. GET OVER IT.  Then we head on over to recess where we chat about Amanda's incredible workplace, Deity Animal Rescue. If you want to adopt, please check them out and don't forget to adopt, don't shop!  We return to class where Kelly plays teacher for a film class all about cheerleading movies. SPOILER: If you have ANY desire to see any cheerleading movies, skip this section because Kelly reveals the entire synopsis of pretty much every single cheerleading movie ever written or produced.  Then, Lindsey ends our day in ornithology class where we talk about birds. Birds, the animals this time. If you want to know how you can pay a whole lot of money to eat bird saliva, tune in! Tell your friends! Will Amanda know all her Birds, both people and animals? Women are still being dismissed by doctors or misdiagnosed, so there is still much work to do. As well as a discussion about the role of HRT in menopause management, they discuss the importance of lifestyle changes that are integral to supporting menopause and bulletproofing women into aging against the major diseases like diabetes, CVD, osteoporosis and Alzheimers.  They also discuss:  Living a movement based life vs a sedentary life.  Knowing there is an entry point into exercise for everybody.  Making small changes that develop into lifelong habits.  Simplifying nutrition to support your body.  Cutting through misformation in the health and wellness world  Adding things of benefit rather than deprivation and restriction.  Amanda Thebe's Three Reasons to Buy Her Book: It's giving you knowledge and knowledge is power! Incredible interview with a mother of two (2) who is driven to serve her community and to build a brand around helping people recover from addiction. Inspired by her grandfather who served his community as an addiction recovery friend. She recalls being inspired when her grandfather passed and seeing thousands of people attend his funeral, most of whom he had helped without his family even knowing. He had been sober 25 years sober. She knew then she wanted to do what he did. And both she and her sister embarked on the clinical side of the practice. She now serves as the COO/CMO for a leading Behavioral Health & Addiction organization in Louisville, Kentucky. She remains passionate about helping companies drive growth and inspire meaningful change and building a great work culture. Amanda can't stand the phrase (as do we) “that's the way it's always been done”. She drives innovation, builds healthy culture and expands the brands of the organizations she works with. But God! Amanda's story, bringing Winnie and Norah into the world. ( and a hell of a lot of sleep chat) This week I am talking to Amanda. As you all know she helped me sleep train Cub the second time around. She has gone from being online friends to an IRL friend. In fact, it’s our first in-person meet recording this podcast. We talk about her bringing her two daughters into the world and how she went from being a teacher to a full-time sleep consultant. How she suffered from anxiety and how that showed up for her as a mother. We talked a lot about sleep. I want to start by saying this episode is not here to force you to sleep train. Or to make you feel bad about how much of little sleep you are getting. There is no judgment in this space and we both come from a place off knowing its not right for everyone or the time for everyone. We just hope whatever you are doing, you are getting enough and feeling good. We are both passionate about how sleep has changed our lives and also the importance of taking fear and shame out of the conversation. So we try to squash any myths with facts. I can't even express how much @babysbestsleep has saved me from the depths of despair, but she did. I was a true skeptic. Until I had Cub I had no need to sleep train, but everything changed and I just couldn't cope, put simply nothing else worked. I hope you enjoy Amanda’s story and that you find it informative. I also hope the facts and our experiences provide some comfort, if you need it. As you can hear for yourself Amanda is so passionate about helping people. She is straight-talking, funny, kind and REALLY knows her stuff. Thank you again Amanda for making the impossible, possible. For easing my anxious mind and giving my cranky, sleepless baby a new lease of life and a hell of a lot more sleep. Not to mention how incredibly different I feel. I couldn't do this podcast and all that does long with it, on no sleep. Oh, and we talk about the @profemilyoster books, "expecting better " and ‘crib sheet’ for those interested in reading you can buy both on amazon. Created and produced by Dick Wolf, the series premiered on NBC on September 20, 1999, as the first spin-off of Wolf's successful crime drama, Law & Order. The show started its 17th season on September 23, 2015, and has aired 385 original episodes as of March 30, 2016. With all the wisdom out there about creating a great culture at work, you might think companies would have it well in hand by now. Unless you actually work in one of those companies. Creating a great culture at work isn’t as easy as it sounds. Sometimes it’s up to you to be the change you want to see. This week's guest Amanda Hite explains how to be the change at work. One of the best things companies can do is to treat their employees like humans who have lives, families, responsibilities, and interests. At the same time, knowing this can also open people up to other difficulties. Amanda shares the story of being offered a promotion as long as she promised NOT to talk about her LGBT lifestyle. When you look at different companies across the globe in terms of culture problems, you see themes emerge. Amanda shares some of these themes, the most prevalent being the generational gaps and how quickly the world is changing. The old regimes are threatened by the highly intelligent younger generation stepping in. Like it or not, we’re all embroiled in politics. It affects the experience we have at work, so Amanda shares a view you might not expect: what’s going RIGHT for work in regards to politics in America. In a world where information can go worldwide in a matter of minutes, issues in the workplace are brought to light and must be addressed by companies. Changes are made to culture because of it. Have you heard the term ‘weaponization of social media?’ As troubling as the reality of it is, it’s a fascinating concept. Laurie and Amanda talk about how the promise behind platforms like Twitter has changed into damage control, and how the younger generations will need to lead the charge to turn it around. In its current state, poverty is down. Life expectancy is up. Seems great, and it is. But trust is at an all-time low. From trust within organizations to trust between organizations and the public, Laurie and Amanda talk about where trust is emerging and how to foster it. So what happens when your workplace isn’t an actual workplace? If you’re in the freelance, gig economy, you don’t have an HR department. So what change can you actually be? Amanda believes that there are already innovations happening that are making it better. She shares some of her favorites. If you want to fix work, you need to start by fixing yourself. It’s a bold declaration that Laurie makes, and Amanda shares her own thoughts on how to fix work. She also shares how SHE’S fixing her own company and the experience her employees have.
