In this episode, Michele explores a powerful but often overlooked distinction that can make or break any meaningful change: strategy vs. tactics.Inspired by a coaching conversation with a client struggling through Veganuary, this episode unpacks why caring deeply—and even making a strong values-based decision—is often not enough to create consistent follow-through.Whether your goal is moving in a vegan or plant-based direction, improving your health, writing a book, changing your drinking, or following through on any important intention, this episode will help you identify what might be missing—and how to make change feel lighter instead of heavier. In this episode, you'll learn:The difference between strategy (the “why” and identity-level decision) and tactics (the real-life actions that create movement)Why many smart, motivated people feel like they keep “restarting”—and why it's not a motivation problemHow having strategy without tactics leads to exhaustion and self-blameWhy tactics without strategy often feel brittle, artificial, or short-livedHow writer Steven Pressfield's work on “Resistance” offers a powerful parallel for vegan and lifestyle changeWhy support and accountability are tactics, not strategies—and how to tell if support is actually helpingWhat “good accountability” sounds like (and what it doesn't)How routines, defaults, and reflection can help you stay engaged when life gets loudMentioned in this episode:The War of Art by Steven PressfieldThe concept of “Resistance” and the idea of “turning pro”Veganuary and values-based changeStrategy and tactics as transferable skills for any life transitionListener reflection:Ask yourself:Do I have a strategy without tactics?Or tactics without strategy?Where might support or reflection make this change lighter instead of heavier?Subscribe & Review:If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review on your favorite podcast platform.

Summary In January 2025, FarmKind ran a provocative media campaign which used controversial media messaging and materials to promote ‘offsetting' as an option for individuals who are concerned about factory farming but are currently unwilling or unable to change their diet. The campaign raised an estimated $16,700--$59,300 (explained in our Results section below) and generated a number of media ‘hits' including TV and created some debate that many advocates have told us they found productive. However we made mistakes in its execution and generated unproductive controversy within the EA and animal advocacy movements. This post aims to explain our theory of change, what happened, what we got wrong, and what we learned. We still believe mobilizing the meat-eating majority to take action for farmed animals requires meeting them where they're at, which sometimes means provocative framing that distinguishes us from vegan advocacy -- though we understand many in the movement disagree. However, we regret specific execution failures, particularly our insufficient stakeholder consultation, which risks sparking infighting within the animal movement.Context FarmKind is a donation platform that aims to bring more money into the movement against factory farming. Marktcheck: „Nährstoff-Anreicherung von Pflanzendrinks“ - Studie: Bioavailability of the calcium in fortified soy imitation milk, with some observations on method - Studie: Calcium intake and bone health Danke an unseren Sponsor. January is a time for intention, renewal, and conscious choice—and for many, that begins with how we nourish ourselves. In this episode of the Michiana Hivecast, we sit down with Michael Pound, Chair of the Michiana VegFest organization, to explore Veganuary through the lens of wellness, compassion, and community. This conversation invites listeners to approach plant-based eating with curiosity rather than perfection, and to see food as a powerful gateway to personal and collective well-being. We discuss: What Veganuary is and why January is a meaningful time to explore plant-based eating How plant-forward choices can support mind–body wellness and energy Common misconceptions about Veganuary and how to approach it with self-compassion The importance of progress over perfection How food connects us to the planet, animals, and one another The role of community—especially local VegFest spaces—in making change accessible and joyful Gentle ways to integrate plant-forward habits beyond January Whether you're plant-based, plant-curious, or simply interested in more mindful living, this episode offers grounded inspiration rooted in connection, care, and conscious living. ✨ Subscribe for more conversations on wellness, community, and intentional living.
What's the secret to getting comms and messaging right around food in the post-HFSS world? PRWeek's Beyond the Noise podcast takes a look. Our guests this week are comms and food expert Mallika Basu, a strategy adviser at Blurred and author of the book, 'In Good Taste: What Shapes What We Eat and Drink – And Why It Matters'; and Harvey Choat, MD of food and drink PR agency Nexus.Beyond the Noise looks at some of the biggest issues affecting communications and PR. Download the podcast via Apple, Spotify, or listen in the browser above or on your favourite platform. The government's 'unhealthy food' ad ban, via the HFSS (high fat, sugar and salt) regulations that came into force on 5 January, prohibits any online advertising of HFSS foods and limits TV ads to after 9pm.Speaking to PRWeek journalists John Harrington and Evie Barrett, our guests discuss what impact the ban has had to date and how clients are reacting. They look at how food brands can build genuine loyalty under the new rules, how influencer marketing is likely to change, and how brands can grow organic engagement.Basu and Choat examine wider issues of food and communications, particularly around the promotion of healthy foods. They ask, among other things, what has happened to Veganuary - and what's the future of food stunts? The duo also discuss some of their favourite food comms campaigns of recent times. Hosted on Acast. Every January, campaigns like Dry January and Veganuary encourage restraint and self-denial at the coldest, darkest point of the year. But what if we've misunderstood both health and the seasons? In this episode of The Standard, host Alan Leer is joined by journalist Melanie McDonagh as she makes the case for “Wet January” — arguing that winter is the worst possible time to give things up, and that our modern wellness habits have lost touch with how people have historically lived through the colder months. We discuss seasonality, comfort, self-denial, and what our obsession with restraint says about modern life. We are so excited to be back In The Nutshell as we kick off season six with dual qualified NHS Consultant Dermatologist and nutritionist Dr Thivi Maruthappu. We cover the inflammatory condition, psoriasis, and find out why it is considered a systemic condition, and how it links to obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic health. Dr Thivi outlines the potential mechanisms through which diet and lifestyle influence systemic inflammation, immune pathways, and the gut microbiome. We take a closer look at the APPLE study (Asking People with Psoriasis about Lifestyle and Eating), co-led by Dr Thivi and researchers at King's College London, exploring how overall diet quality relates to psoriasis severity, and how dietary patterns rich in plant-based foods are associated with better outcomes, providing important data that lifestyle and dietary assessments have a key role to play alongside standard clinical care.To access the study:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39973353/Zanesco S, Maruthappu T, Griffiths CEM, Dalrymple KV, Gibson R, Hall WL. Quels nutriments y trouve-t-on ? How many people went vegan during Veganuary? Enough to fill up the largest sports arena hundreds of times. Astonishingly, millions of people have ditched meat and dairy in favor of a plant-based diet since the inception of Veganuary, according to Sandra Hungate, U.S. Director of the annual movement. But the actual impact is far great than that. She joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to talk about the enormous growth of the month and what the future of Veganuary might look like. Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful end to 2024 and start to the new year, that you're reenergized, and excited for anything you've set out to do this year. January is such a strange month, it's filled with that new start, new you energy, and all the feels because of the Holidays coming to an end, it's also Veganuary and the month of so many new year's resolutions when it comes to our habits, and so many people (myself included), chose this time of year once upon a time to make the change and go vegan or at lest start taking more steps in that direction. So to start off the year I thought I'd bring you part 2 of our much anticipated conversation with registered dietitian nutritionist Taylor Wolfram, to continue where we left off in part 1 discussing how to build balanced vegan meals and navigating common food fears associated with vegan eating, and because Taylor is Taylor, and she is such a pro at making sure people are getting everything they need, it again turned into a masterclass of so many of those vegan nutrition basics. In part 1 which I highly recommend listening to first if you haven't already, Taylor talked about her own path to going vegan and becoming a dietitian, she gave us the lowdown of how to build balanced meals and a method for meal building that is as simple as it gets while still covering all your bases, and we began discussing common food fears like oils, vegan processed foods, grains and more. In today's episode we continue talking about common food fears like the fear of too many carbohydrates in a vegan diet, or eating carbohydrates and starches at night, our consumption of fruit, more on oils as in, whether there are some she recommends more, and a big one, the fear supplementing within a vegan diet. What I wasn't expecting within this episode though, is that when talking about that last fear, Taylor gives us a master introduction into supplementation for vegans. Perhaps one of the biggest questions we get on a regular basis, “what should I supplement as a vegan?”, Taylor talks about it all in this episode. Taylor Wolfram is a licensed registered dietitian nutritionist, a long-time vegan and owner of a weight-inclusive nutrition therapy practice. She is a Certified Befriending Your Body Teacher and works with adults who are interested in ditching the diet mentality, reconnecting with their bodies and learning to trust their inner wisdom. She also specializes in vegan nutrition and created the Anti-Diet Vegan Nutrition Online Course, which I am a student of and can tell you, it's amazing and covers so much when it comes to vegan nutrition without fear or obsession. I thought Taylor was the perfect way to bring in the new year, because I'm pretty certain I can speak for both of us when I say, we can have fantastic nutrition as vegans, without the added obsession, fear or worry, with a little education, which in my opinion is Taylor's superpower, other than teaching the internet her amazing nooch tofu which I make on a regular basis. Without further ado, click play above for part 2 of my conversation with Taylor. For all the links mentioned in today's episode, click here or visit brownble.com/blog
