Welcome to episode 129 of the Women's Running Podcast. This week, we are sponsored by Runna. We have a LOT to talk about today. We've got to cover off training for the Paris Half, insecurities about that training, motivations for running in the first place, menopausal symptoms and, lastly, figs.Half marathon trainingSo first of all we chat about Holly's training for the half. She's having all the wobbles about Paris, post Covid. Her long runs haven't quite hit the mark, although she has been doing some cross training, and she's really worried about how things are going to go on the day. I try and soothe her fears, but I'm sure you guys can do that better than me!Menopause symptomsI talk about menopause a bit here, because I've realised that periods and hormones (or lack of them) have been having an effect on my training. We talk through as many symptoms as we can before we run out of time – I'm fully aware that there are more, but also that a number of these can affect our lives and our running. And that it's important to remember that they are wildly diverse and sometimes it's difficult to join the dots between all these different things. Have a look on Women's Running womensrunning.co.uk for great advice on menopause and running.Lastly: are figs vegan? An expert weighs into the debate and we are, obviously, delighted. This, and more hot topics, including the ever present Veganuary wind situation, are discussed in detail. Don't say you haven't been warned.LinksFind out more about Runna and download the app!Do join us on Patreon for exclusive newsletters, free monthly Live chats, and Patreon-only episodes!Do please email us at wrpodcast@anthem.co.uk with any questions or running stories Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Glen Burrows is the co-founder of The Ethical Butcher, a UK-based online marketplace for meat from regenerative farms. In 2020 Glen started Regenuary as a way to change the conversation around food and the environment. Instead of Veganuary, where the focus is solely on eating vegan for a month, Regenuary encourages everyone, regardless of diet preferences, to look at the sourcing of their food and to choose food from regenerative farming. Even if you aren't in the UK and can't access The Ethical Butcher's delicious products, you can still participate in Regenuary by engaging in open conversations about where our food comes from. It's still January so two things spring to mind, Veganuary and Burn's night and what a wonderful pairing for 2023. On this episode of Scran we look at the delightful ways to celebrate Burns night but doing so in a vegan manner. Rosalind talks to chef Emma Ray, a vegan chef with lots of hints and tips for anyone hosting a Burns supper or indeed attending one. We are very excited to share with you a Burns poem to celebrate the national bard, read by none other than Scottish actor James Cosmo - VisitScotland kindly shared this recording with us having carried out research this year that showed the piece featured in this episode, 'To a Mouse', is in fact Scotland's favourite Burns poem. Rosalind speaks to Peter Holroyd from Kingsbarns distillery who gives us the history of this small, family-run distillery and his recommendation for the kind of whisky he would choose for any haggis pairing. Finally Rosalind chats to Diana Thompson from Wine Events Scotland who you may remember from previous episodes of Scran. Diana gets into some of the technical side of why some wine is vegan and some isn't. We hope you enjoy our celebration of Burns - slainte mhath!
Whether it's reading more books or eating out less, January is the month of goals and challenges. Veganuary is no exception. The 30-day plant-based challenge originated nearly a decade ago, and has since taken on a life of its own. We'll hear from three different vegans working in the plant-based space about their journey to becoming vegan, and what it means to them. What do you want to know about the lifestyle? This week I'm joined by writer and academic Christopher Sebastian McJetters. We're talking about what speciesism—the view that certain species should have more rights to freedom and life than others—has to do with racism, sexism, and homophobia. Following our recent episode with Jasmin Singer about help being more vegan-friendly, I was thrilled to hear some of you were inspired to try eating more plant-based. It's a resolution that a lot of people are making in the month of January, as we try on those New Year's resolutions. (There's even a campaign called Veganuary that can help.) But I wanted to have this broader conversation with Christopher about why caring about animal rights is a social justice issue that is related to being anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-homophobic. My hope is listening will help deepen your resolve to eat more plant-based for the animals/environment/health, or at least expand your circle of compassion a little wider. I hope you find this conversation helpful, empathy-building, and inspiring. -- Christopher Sebastian is an author, researcher, and lecturer. He writes about food, politics, media, and pop culture. He currently teaches news writing for social media and has guest lectured at Columbia University, Cambridge University, Cornell, and the University of Oxford. Find out more about him at https://www.christophersebastian.info/ -- HOUSEKEEPING NOTE: As you might have noticed, I'm moving the podcast to biweekly for the time being so that I don't burn out and don't have to bug you quite as often about fundraising to support the podcast. I still will sometimes, but not as much. (@rachel-krantz on venmo, icymi :)) Thank you so much to everyone who has supported the podcast thus far, and I promise that even though it'll be slightly less frequent, the quality will hopefully be that much better.
“Everyone deserves a meal” is one of the mottos of organic gardener Sarah Mead as she tackles garden pests – and is the thread running through this month's podcast. Fiona takes a tour of Sarah's beautiful, Soil Association-certified organic garden at Yeo Valley dairy farm in Blagdon, and find out how she works alongside wildlife rather than trying to eradicate pests. “It's critical to leave things alone so you don't break the food chain because once you've done that you've lost the battle,” says Sarah, who uses sacrificial plants, companion planting and copper tape to help manage whitefly, slugs and other challenges in the six-and-a-half-acre garden. “Organic gardening is all about being hands off. It's less work in the long run: less digging, less mowing, less spraying. It can be done on a large scale or a small one. Just start by apply one principle and keep going.” To mark Veganuary, Fiona and Chris also discuss veganic gardening, and moving away from animal-based ingredients in the garden. They touch on the value of plant-based diets that encourage us to grow and eat more vegetables, which are great for our health and for biodiversity. And they also share their love of feeding the birds in winter - and look forward to Big Garden Birdwatch at the end of this month.

We give you some fun facts about the holiday, and explore some traditions. We also share some of the intentions that we have for the coming year. Here we are just a few days into 2023! Have you made, or perhaps already broken, any New Year's resolutions? Well, it's not too late to get involved. There are plenty of good initiatives out there and here's one which is designed to help you stick to a resolution for a full month, or at least try something new. The Veganuary challenge is pretty easy to understand. It's a contraction of the words “vegan” and “January”, the idea being to go vegan for a month, cutting out all animal origin food from your diet. According to organisers, over 580,000 people from 209 countries across the world registered to take part last year, and that figure is expected to increase again in 2023. How long has the Veganuary movement been around? How can I join in? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! Veganuary started out as a non-profit that has now turned into a huge 31 day challenge where the beneficiary is you, the earth, animals, and your wallet. How can that be? Listen to find out. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/heyevette/message

Christabel Cairns organises the Great Taste Awards and is heavily involved in the World Cheese Awards. Christabel joins Susie and AJ as a guest presenter for the next four weeks and brings a whole host of Great Taste Award winning products to assess. First, off she talks about Try January - why not try something new that you haven't before - much more exciting than Dry January and possible a bit more daring than Veganuary.

We gave the boys the week off last week and told them to go enjoy themselves. Our bad. As we catch up with Toby and James after the holidays, they share their Christmas disaster stories - James got vertigo playing on a roundabout with his three year-old granddaughter, while Toby stayed in the Airbnb-from-hell in Cardiff. For 2023 they discuss the pros and cons of Veganuary and/or Dry January (one is enough for Toby); complain about the horrors of Sadiq Kahn's New Year's Eve fireworks display and the *ahem* vocal stylings of Sam Ryder on BBC1; express their condolences to the good people of Scarborough, whose beachfront fireworks display was cancelled when a Walrus turned up on the beach; the first 'non-binary" vicar in the Church of England and then get in their usual ten cents about how ghastly Harry and Meghan are. Then, in Culture Corner, they talk about The Glass Onion (Netflix), The Swimmers (Netflix), Avatar 2 and the Christmas special of The Detectorists (BBC iPlayer.) Learn more about your ad choices. This episode we have the wonderful Molly from the Simply Vegan podcast (and also from our company, so we know her well and have got hugely drunk with her – we are mates!) to chat to us about all things plant-based before we head into Veganuary. We start off by discussing our past drunkenness, but quickly move on to actual food.Running foodWe discuss what we're eating for Christmas – even though this is, as we all know, what Holly refers to as our ‘perineum episode'. So our tenses are all over the place while we discuss the stuff we eat, which allows me to talk through the legendary reason why I love sprouts so much. But it also means we can ask what actual vegans eat for Christmas, and – whisper it – it doesn't actually sound that bad.Vegan running foodThen we cover a ton of must-know topics for those of us facing Veganuary: such as, can we eat figs? And is vegan cheese any good? Molly then explains how to make tuna out of chickpeas, which blows our tiny minds, and talks us through her favourite vegan meals to give us a bit of inspiration. Importantly, she tells us what puddings and sweet things are intentionally vegan or accidentally so.Vegan runners! But we also have a small ulterior motive here, as Molly joins us because she is going to be running the London Landmarks Half Marathon in March, and she wants our advice on running, so we eventually get on to some running chat, answering a few of her worries and questions about her training up to that first half marathon. And for podcast keeners, you'll be able to hear me and Holly over on the Simply Vegan podcast at some point in January gassing on at length with a load of training tricks and tips for our favourite vegans.LinksListen to the Simply Vegan podcast for more of Molly!Check the Vegan Food and Living website for tons of recipes and fun vegan stuffChris Packham discusses the importance of waspsHow to check if your booze is vegan on BarnivoreWin a pair of Brooks Ghost 14 GTX, worth £140 by entering this podcast-only compo!Do join us on Patreon for exclusive newsletters, free monthly Live chats, and Patreon-only episodes!Come along to the National Running Show in January, and say hello!
