Repetition is reputation. Michael Preysman, Founder and Climate Lead at Everlane, has earned his reputation by repeatedly delivering on his company's promise to “Help people live their best lives with the least impact on the planet." The company pioneered the term ‘Radical Transparency', and has lifted the veil on many aspects of the fashion industry from pricing mark-ups to factory processes. Embodying the brand's transparent values, Michael has put environmental impact front and center through commitments in its supply chain to eliminate all virgin plastic by 2021 and to transition to organic cotton by 2023. In this conversation with host Ryan Berman, Michael shares his philosophy on approaching life as a practice, the importance of taking time away from work to do things that “fill your bucket”, and how to overcome fear when it gets in the way of growth. With economic and consumer trends constantly in flux, Imaginary Ventures co-founder and managing partner Nick Brown wants to ensure his VC firm stays ahead of the curve. Brown created the venture capital firm alongside Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet in 2018. It is now one of the largest VC funds sitting at the intersection of technology and retail. The company's portfolio includes well-known brands, platforms and founders, including Glossier, Skims, Everlane and Farfetch. The firm has grown funds under its management to $1 billion. In April, it announced its third fund, of $500 million, across late- and early-stage businesses. According to Brown, part of Imaginary's success has been its ability to find the diamond startup with the potential for global reach. "Our approach to investing in brands was always brand lead and product lead," Brown shared on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. Brown added that the company prioritizes brands at the forefront of innovation in technology and those that can adjust to an ever-changing ecosystem. While Imaginary has found success in investing in later-stage businesses, it also values early-stage brands and founders shaping the future of the consumer experience. "If you're an early-stage founder, it's less about the detail of [a 5-year plan] and more about the vision of how you're going to hit scale, because that's the hardest thing for everybody. I would say that, for every 20, 30, 40 companies we see, [only] one of them has the ability to hit that [$100 million] kind of scale. So you want to be really thoughtful and really confident in your articulation of how you achieve that," said Brown.

Marketing strategist, author and adjunct professor, Mark Schaefer argues that the CMO must be in charge of the entire customer experience, and how some brands - like Glossier and Everlane - are doing it right. In a world where isolation and loneliness are on the rise, community is more important than ever. Mark argues that consumers want to believe in the brands they support, that they to want to participate in and to belong to a brand. Belonging is such a human drive - and Mark believes that beyond purpose, companies will need to start using technology to connect to people in deeply personal ways. For more from Mark, check out his podcast, his books, and his blog at Businessesgrow.com.Scratch is a production of Rival, a marketing innovation consultancy that develops strategies and capabilities that help businesses grow faster. We sit down with Jeremy Cai, the CEO of new retail pioneer Italic, for a fascinating discussion of how they're upending the traditional manufacturer-brand-retailer model by taking the opposite approach of earlier DTC startups. Rather than elevating brand and cutting out retail, Italic cuts out the brand and lets the actual manufacturers (who you've never heard of but who make most of the actual products that J. Crew, Everlane, etc sell) market and sell direct to customers. Sponsor: Thank you to Tegus for being our first presenting sponsor for the Acquired LP Show! A conversation with Emma. The general topics we discuss are atheism, motherhood, birth control and abortion, fast fashion and sustainability, and veganism. Specifically, we discuss: A bit about Emma, the unwritten requirement of motherhood, Emma's christian upbringing and her transition to being an atheist, how ignorance and conservatism go hand in hand, emotional manipulation at Christian summer camps, going to church, spirituality, religious schools, how motherhood negatively affects careers and how men do less housework on average, gender norms in housework, how birth order plays a role in who does the most housework, the role of nature and nurture in shaping gender norms around child-raising and putting effort into a relationship, why Emma won't be having kids, how much decreasing happiness with each kid is related to getting poorer, birth control and the Catholic baby machine, universal basic income, types of birth control and their side effects, abortions and pro-choice, the possibility of Roe v. Wade being overturned, the lack of accurate representation of the populace in congress, Emma's argument for pro-choice, whether the pro-life idea will die out, rural vs urban and how your ideas change to fit your surroundings/peers, how fast fashion affects the environment, thrifting and sustainable clothing, Dunkin' Donuts' 41 new vegan flavors, being as ethical as possible with your purchases, buying from Target and working at Target, whether you can be sure a company that claims to be ethical or sustainable really is, developing countries who have yet to experience their industrial revolution, freeganism and how your purchases influence companies, how giant meat companies like Tyson will take over the lab-grown meat industry rather than going out of business, whether it's worse to order online than in-store, food deserts and how easy it is to be vegan, and Emma's book recommendation. Sorry for the audio quality in this one. There was some sort of malfunction with my microphone throughout the recording that I couldn't fix. Is your workplace toxic? Probably. In this two-parter episode, we're talking about toxic workplaces, how common they are, and the structures of power that create them. In Part One, we break down the problems that caused Bon Appetit's fall in June 2020, exposing the ways staff of color were devalued, and how it took down the podcast, Reply All, that tried to cover it half a year later for the same problems. Then we take a look at two examples of more direct racism that can occur in the workplace through Everlane and Ellen DeGeneres. As a palate cleanser, do you know what "Cinnamon Toast Crunch Shrimp Tails Guy Gets Milkshake Duck'd" means? Find out with Isa at the end of the episode! And make sure to check back next week for Part Two where we talk about the examples of racism in Glossier, sexism AND racism in Pinterest, and harassment in ThirdLove and Away. We'll also discuss the signs of a toxic workplace, the effects of the pandemic on the workplace for better or for worse, and how to endure your workplace if it is toxic. OOF. CLEAR YOUR MIND, FEEL LESS STRESSED: www.headspace.com/clubcool Barrett and Phil jump on the mics for another rousing edition. First up, the boys talk about the many incredible style moments at today's historic inauguration, including but not limited to Bernie wearing his meme jacket and the Vice President's nephew showing up in Dior 1s. Then, for the big topic of the day, the guys talk about how the necessity for business growth typically ends up hurting the product from your favorite designers and brands. Whether it's contemporary favorites like John Elliott and Aimé Leon Dore pushing out more product at better margins or bigger companies like Everlane and Bonobos feeling the pressure to answer to their investors and corporate overlords. Barrett then highlights some of his favorite under-the-radar brands (BTFL Studio, Séfr, & Sunflower) and points out how shopping these lines in the earlier stages of this lifecycle can be more favorable to the consumer. Finally, the boys talk about the rise of "Seinfeld" and "Friends" as sources of style inspiration for a generation that's acquainting themselves with the shows for the first time just as 90s influence on fashion continues to reign supreme. If you think you're too small to make a difference in the world of fast fashion, think again. As Garik points out, have you ever spent the night with a mosquito? There's no such thing as too small of an impact! In Part 2 of the conversation, Garik and I are discussing how he operates his business, Eco-Stylist, how they deem if brands are ethical and sustainable, and how to watch out for the all-too-common practice of greenwashing! To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfetlhippie.com Garik explains that Eco-Stylist uses high standards to measure how ethical and sustainable brands are. Unfortunately, not all brands are transparent with their manufacturing processes so this isn't always an easy task. Much of the media attempts to compile lists of sustainable brands themselves, but did you know that brands can pay to be associated with terms like “sustainable” even if they're not? Yeah, I'm talking about you, Everlane and H&M! Have no fear - Garik has done the research for us and has lists of brands and even curated collections of items that we can truly trust. Today on the show, Garik also gives tons of recommendations of websites, books, podcasts, and even movies that we can watch to learn more about these things. One of my favorites is his own blog where he deconstructs some of the myths behind ethical fashion. My favorite takeaway from the show today is the call to action that Garik leaves us with to make a difference. We are the change we want to see, and these changes start with us. We can't wait for our institutions to make rules about fast fashion - we have to be the one's to start this process! And the best news is that we already have started to have an impact. Let's keep the momentum going! Sustainable fashion. Ethical fashion. Fast fashion. These are terms we've all heard before; these are things I've even discussed on the show before! But, for some reason this tends to be a female-dominated conversation. Well, that stops here! For today's episode, I got to interview a leading entrepreneur in the sustainable men's wear industry - Garik Himebaugh, founder of Eco-Stylist. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie.com Garik would not have described himself as a fashionable person in years past. He actually claims that he used to attempt to hide in his own clothes. How many of us can relate to that?! However, he eventually recognized that his clothing choices could be a way for him to express himself. Combine this with a passion for doing good in the world and Eco-Stylist was eventually born. Garik now runs this amazing site that provides resources for men to find sustainable and ethical fashion and even does personal styling for the fashionably-challenged. He believes that finding brands you can trust who do good for the planet and its inhabitants should not be a hard thing. Even though his platform focuses on men's wear, I've personally benefited from all of the resources he provides on many occasions! He has dozens of blog posts that answer so many questions you might be wondering - like, what can I do with clothes and shoes I don't want anymore? Or, is Everlane really a sustainable brand, or are they practicing greenwashing? So much good stuff! On Part 1 of this interview, Garik and I discuss his journey with Eco-Stylist and why he felt the need to start this company. AKA - what is up with fast fashion? Even if this is a topic you've heard about before, let's keep the conversation going! It's important to remind ourselves why supporting fast fashion is so incredibly harmful. It's also important to know what our alternatives are! Garik and I will talk more about that in Part 2, but he does offer some great tips today. For instance, did you know that two thirds of your fashion footprint comes after you've purchased your clothing and brought it home? That's right, I'm talking about the impact our laundry has! Garik is going to shed light on things like this and remind us why the environmental and humanitarian impact of fashion is something we can't stop talking about.
