Everlane's success has partly been driven by differentiating themselves from the rest of the fashion industry. Crucially they have reframed the competition as behaving unfairly. In this episode we look at a series of behavioral science experiments that show brands can disrupt consumer apathy if they position the competition as having behaved unfairly. We cover a range of studies by Werner Guth, Sally Blount and Richard Thaler. Most importantly we focus on the practical marketing applications.

Today, our guest is Nan Yu, Head of Product at Linear, a purpose-built tool for planning and building products. Prior to working at Linear, Nan worked at Mode, Abstract, Everlane, and Bank of America. On today's episode, Nan talks to LogRocket's VP of Marketing, Jeff Wharton, about: Why the only thing that matters is the next category launch — even if it's held together with duct tape "You can have everything held together with duct tape and it's okay. And I think that's an uncomfortable sort of mindset for people to adopt really. At Everlane, the only thing that was important was the next category launch launch. You can sacrifice everything else. If the next category launch goes well, numbers go up, we raise more money, we get more customers. That's the only thing that matters." Why it's important to have conviction in making decisions — even if the market slaps you in the face "But at the end of the day, you know, as a leader, you own the decisions that they're making. As a leader saying, 'Here's where we're going to be great and really differentiate and rise above the market.' And I could be wrong, right? I could be aggressively, tragically wrong, and that's fine. That's actually probably better, right? You want to know for sure that you're wrong and that you can switch directions; failing fast is a thing that we want to do. It's not like, 'Oh, well, we're gonna wait and see.' No, have some conviction around something, focus on it, and let the market slap you in the face if it's not correct." Why engineering teams can sometimes suffer from learned helplessness, and why it's detrimental to product innovation "You see teams where there's a product manager per five or six engineers. And engineers will tend to check out a little bit from understanding how the product actually works, understanding the customer, because, well, we got this PM senior right here. It's not out of laziness necessarily, it's more like, well, this is someone's job description, so it wouldn't feel right for me to do that. And then you start having this learned helplessness. So I think that dynamic is probably way more dangerous than a product manager being overworked. If you end up in a state where your engineering team is like disengaged and they have learned helplessness, good luck trying to unwind that. That is a cultural change that you're not going to observe until it's too late, and it's very difficult to to reverse and it takes a long time." Fashion Crimes Podcast

Welcome, Fashion Besties! It's officially the most fabulous time of the year, and this week, we're serving you the ultimate holiday and winter trend guide for 2024.   Whether you're planning your holiday outfits, updating your winter wardrobe, or simply avoiding seasonal fashion pitfalls, this episode is your stylish survival kit.   Host Holly Katz dives into the must-haves of the season, the brands and boutiques to know, and—of course—identifies the most egregious winter fashion crimes to help you stay ahead of the curve.   Trust and believe, this episode will make you the best dressed at every event and sleigh all day, (and all winter long!) #DUH (link)   HOT TIP: Head on over to Holly's Pinterest board for this episode and see all products discussed in the flesh for your shopping pleasure.     Key Talking Points   1. Sweater Weather Must-Haves #nonnegosh Holly shares her love for cozy yet chic sweaters from brands like Toccin and Favorite Daughter, highlighting timeless pieces like cashmere pullovers and chunky knits. You can't go wrong buying one for you and one for someone else. #TRUTH   She also adores Lingua Franca's custom embroidered sweaters with phrases like “Aprés All Day.” These pieces are not just warm—they're wardrobe investments that elevate your winter style and are hot-ticket gift items for past seasons that are still going strong.      2. Boot Trends That Work for Every Occasion Winter boots are a wardrobe staple that will never die. Classic riding boots, cowboy boots (short or mid-calf styles), and heeled boots in fun colors like burgundy or navy are here to stay. Get on the boot train; it won't let you down.   Brands like Dolce Vita, Freebird, and Nordstrom's curated collections take center stage. Think you can get by without these winter essentials? Fashion. Crime. #weloveboots 3. Hot Blazers & Chic Outerwear The blazer game is strong this winter as it's been in past seasons, with leather and cropped styles leading the charge. Holly calls out Princess Polly for affordable faux leather options and highlights a chic tweed blazer from Anine Bing.   She also warns against oversized, long shapeless jackets that add unnecessary bulk—a fashion crime we can all avoid with the right alterations.   4. Holiday Party Dresses Sparkly “festive tops”? No, ma'am. Show-stopping dresses from boutiques like Reformation, Saks, and Alice & Olivia? Yes ma'am.   Off-the-shoulder A-line dresses, pleated full skirts, and leather midi dresses are some of our top picks for the festive season. Let us help you get out of your comfort zone. Pair them with statement earrings and an evening clutch for full-on glam. Worried about a shoe? You can't go wrong with a metallic. They go with everything.    5. Accessory Alert: Bags and Belts These three main bags should be in your closet...and your life: a boss tote, an everyday handbag, and a metallic or fun-colored evening clutch. #DOIT   She also insists on having at least two belts—one skinny and one wide—to instantly upgrade any outfit. Black and brown are the basics. Extra credit for white or a fun color.   6. Tops That Elevate Your Wardrobe Versatile, high-quality tops that can effortlessly transition from casual to dressy will never let you down. Don't compromise color or price for fit. You get what you pay for.    Everlane and Hampden Clothing are great options for stylish blouses with clean lines and unique fabrics. Start small and figure out what looks best for your body type.    Suggestions include but are not limited to: silk or silk-blend tops, billowy sleeves, and cap-sleeve blouses that layer beautifully under jackets or sweaters. It's a must for a cohesive wardrobe whether you're working from home or not.     Fashion Crimes to Avoid   • Using a cheap, distorted mirror as your “style guide.” Invest in a proper full-length mirror with adequate lighting!   • Opting for boring, too-long, oversized blazers that you think hide your figure. Get them altered to emphasize your waist.    • Settling for predictable “festive tops” and clothing that you feel you can only wear once a year at holiday parties. Opt for a fab dress and don't be afraid to be the best dressed person in the room. Also? Sequins during the day with jeans? Yes, please!     Wrap-Up   HOT TIP: Head on over to Holly's Pinterest board for this episode and see all products discussed in the flesh for your shopping pleasure.   Thank you so much for joining us in this stylish celebration of the season while addressing the pitfalls that can sneak into your winter wardrobe. (Link)   Whether it's elevating your look with luxe layers or accessorizing with intention, Holly is here to ensure you avoid fashion crimes before they happen.     Don't forget: fashion and style are your friends, not your enemies!   Happiest of holidays to you, and let us know what you want to hear. Please engage with us on socials and don't forget to DM us to get a shout-out on the next episode. Send us pics of your holiday party looks so we can tell you how gorg you are.  The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed! We're here for ya.  Hosted by Holly Katz.

Can Radical Transparency (& Traceability) Be An Effective Strategy For Supplement Brands?

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2024 17:27

Can “radical transparency” be an effective strategy within the supplement industry? While this subject matter exploration began almost a decade ago through various strategic management consulting projects, it has also found its way into many of my past content pieces. But the inspiration behind this current radical transparency content has roots in what first motivated me to investigate the management philosophy. A few weeks ago, I'm scrolling LinkedIn and see this business story shared that had an image of this fluorescent neon yellow stick pack supplement and its founder that looked familiar (but I couldn't instantly recognize him). After opening the article, I got enough information that identified why I knew Michael Preysman (i.e. he founded the disruptive fashion brand Everlane) and the supplement brand name (i.e. Magna), which has dubbed itself “the world's first magnesium powered daily hydration formula.” And you might be asking…what does a guy from the apparel industry know about how to start a supplement company anyways? But here's maybe the crazy thing…that few pundits want to acknowledge about today's supplement industry, winners/losers are rarely created by solving some complex science problem with a vitamins, minerals, and supplements (VMS) product. That being said, Micheal Preysman did correctly spot a potential market opportunity in that most adult Americans are magnesium deficit. Furthermore, he had conviction in connecting that “supplements trend” and leveraging a sequence of other dimensions shaping the future of the supplement industry with a key “driver of demand.” Now…all these “sound strategic decisions” doesn't mean Magna will be successful on any level, let alone to the $200 million revenue mark like Everlane, but it does increase the probability of that result. But more importantly to the main focus of this content…if brand authenticity is upheld, and Magna acts consistent with its tagline “for those that play the long game,” then it could also help disrupt the supplement industry by channeling some of the “radical transparency” elements that Everlane championed within the fashion industry...and combining it with supply chain traceability strategies of Ritual vitamins. But my latest first principles thinking content will explore if this level of combined radical transparency (and traceability) could really work within the supplement industry. TBH this “build model” hasn't even been attempted to a large degree within the supplement industry, but that doesn't mean I don't wholeheartedly believe it would be successful because of the distinctly bold strategic narrative. Now by saying that…I also acknowledge the sheer difficulty required to pull it off at the highest level. But as the famous proverb says, “there is only one way to eat an elephant: one bite at a time.” Because that's what trips up too many entrepreneurs when they look at pursuing radical transparency (or traceability), it's not required to eat the elephant in one bite. Instead, it's initially about embracing the spirit of these pursuits. After that…it comes down to breaking down the pursuit down into more manageable SMART goals, setting expectations (or standards), aligning company incentives, and then understanding that it's an endless opportunity to do better. And that's because there is no “project” endpoint when pursuing radical transparency (or traceability), it's a “process” of constant improvement. Michael Preysman turned heads in 2011 when he launched pioneering DTC apparel brand Everlane. With his latest venture – Magna, a brand of sports wellness powders infused with magnesium – he has once again captured the attention of many, particularly those in the beverage industry. In 2022, Michael stepped down as Everlane CEO and took a new role as the company's executive chair and climate lead. After handing over the day-to-day responsibilities of running Everlane, whose 2023 revenues are pegged to be north of $200 million, Michael focused on Magna, which debuted last month. Leading with the tagline “for those who play the long game,” Magna markets hydration powders that are made with three forms of magnesium along with electrolytes. The company, which developed the products in partnership with doctors and athletes, are promoted as providing greater focus, energy and recovery.  Magna comes in four flavors – lemon lime, tea lemonade, watermelon lime, and peach mango – and is sold direct-to-consumer via its website, where a box of 30 sachets sells for $55 or $45 by subscription. In this episode, Michael spoke about how his personal interest in magnesium spurred the development of Magna, how he leaned into his skill set to create the brand, lessons from building Everlane that he is applying to the new company and the surprises and challenges that have come during his second stint at entrepreneurship. Show notes: 0:35: Michael Preysman, Founder, Everlane & Magna – Michael and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif chat about their respective philosophies on facial hair, whether the entrepreneur wears his own brand and why 1/11/11 is an important day in his life. Michael also discusses the origins of Magna and why he chose to create a beverage powder versus an RTD, creating authentic relationships with customers, his perspective on differentiation for both Everlane and Magna and why the latter's packaging draws inspiration from a cigarette brand. He also talks about content creation and the value of people in advertising, how he thinks about and implements a customer service strategy, why co-packing is trickier than he anticipated and how to identify and work with mentors. He started with a cotton T-shirt, and taught himself every stage of production, from sourcing the fabric, to cutting, dyeing, and finishing. When Michael realized that some luxury brands charged as much as seven times the actual cost of a T-shirt, he decided to sell his for $15, and soon caused a stir by telling the world exactly what it cost to make. Eventually the brand shifted its focus to sustainability and social responsibility, a strategy that invited harsh criticism, especially during the Covid era. I've been in an organisation now for over 12 years and in every single facet of my work at Condé Nast, I've been the outsider,” Kingori says. For Kingori, being different has not only been personally beneficial, but also forms part of her business philosophy. “I think conformity is the enemy of progress and creativity in business. It's completely strange that we're all sort of desperately trying to belong to a tribe, think the same, and all of those things.” Intuition is a cornerstone of Kingori's leadership philosophy. “Let your intuition be the starting point. Intuition is about a subconscious understanding of something, but that subconscious understanding comes from somewhere. It's not magic… It's that you have experienced or observed something that underpins a strong belief,” she says.BoF VOICES, our annual gathering for big thinkers, returns from Nov. 28 to Nov. 30, 2023. Ep. 157: How Celebrity Makeup Artist, Vittorio Masecchia, Developed A Beauty Brand To Create Elaborate Eye Looks In Seconds   On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Celebrity Makeup Artist, Vittorio Masecchia, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Dexterous, daring, and dedicated to his craft, Vittorio has always set out to become one of the leading makeup artists in the industry. His meticulous eye for design and limitless wealth of knowledge have solidified him as a leading expert and point of reference for clients and the industry at large. A Montreal native, descending from four generations of beauty experts, Vittorio continues a legacy of celebrating the transformative powers of makeup and hair.    Vittorio celebrates 20 years of artistry in the industry with the launch of namesake brand and life-long dream Vittorio Masecchia Beauty.   His multi-decade career has covered film, media, editorial, and brands providing Vittorio with extensive expertise in diverse arenas. Vittorio's favorite highlights include working with: Gigi Hadid, Paris Hilton and Demi Lovato; working on campaigns for clients such as Bite Beauty, Ilia, Everlane and NYX; and being featured in magazines such as: Vogue, the New York Times and Cosmopolitan. Early in his career, he was awarded a Contessa award as "Canadian Makeup Artist of the Year”.    Based in Los Angeles, with a fan base that continues to grow, Vittorio Masecchia Beauty features a line of luxury facial decals. Born from a consistent artistic need to work swiftly and to create elaborate eye looks using trending embellishments to complement makeup. After years of requests to create camera-ready, detail-oriented, clean graphic, and bold eye looks, Masecchia dreamed of creating his own collection of quick-application face appliqués that gave the same instant gratification as his love for false lashes and wigs.    His dream finally came to fruition in 2020 when his life-long habit of doodling eyes started jumping off the pages and onto faces. [Although his client roster now consists of the highest-profile models, celebrities, and influencers, he believes that everyone deserves to feel confident and beautiful everyday]. As his following continues to grow, so did the demand to know how he achieves his sculptural and sultry looks on his clients. That led him to bridge his work as a makeup artist and digital creator to create a beauty line.   Vittorio is the real deal! I had such a wonderful time talking to him and found out we had some things in common. In this interview Vittorio shares: -What is was like coming from a lineage of beauty pros -The pros and cons of working with celebrities -How he meticulously developed his line Vittorio Massechia Beauty -If MUA's should consider having a product line -How he keeps himself grounded and in good spirits -Plus all of the exciting things coming up for his brand   This is definitely an interview you will enjoy because I know I did. *This episode was recorded Wednesday night, so Emma and Julie recorded a brief intro Thursday morning to debrief the Jimmy Kimmel interview.* Emma and Julie begin by discussing the family's ABC special with Robin Roberts that aired Wednesday night. They analyze why it was different than the sit-down style interview they were anticipating. They then, naturally, discuss the photos released of Pete and North driving around Calabasas in Kim's pink Moke car (given to her by Kris for Christmas.) Next, a conversation on Travis and Kourtney's “practice” Vegas wedding, Jack Harlow, and more.
