Acknowledge that each person's family is unique and has its own dynamics. Embrace Humility Approach holiday gatherings with humility, recognizing that both partners bring their own backgrounds and traditions into the relationship. Foster an open mindset to understand and appreciate each other's family dynamics. Negotiate Priorities Prioritize and negotiate what aspects of the holiday season are most important to each partner. Example: Decide if traveling during Christmas is non-negotiable or if there's room for compromise. Compromise Where Possible Find common ground and compromise to create a holiday plan that suits both partners. Recognize that flexibility is key, especially when blending different family traditions. Express Discomforts Communicate any discomforts to your partner, serving as a buffer in family interactions. Example: Share concerns about personal boundaries, such as not wanting to be overly affectionate in certain family settings. Create a Game Plan Develop a game plan for holiday gatherings, including specifics like how long you'll stay and what's acceptable behavior around children. Discuss potential challenges and agree on how to address them in the moment. In-the-Moment Discussions Address issues as they arise during holiday events. Be a united front and step away together if necessary, ensuring that family dynamics don't strain your relationship. Set Boundaries Clearly define and communicate boundaries for family interactions. Establish guidelines for how much time you spend with each family, especially if conflicts arise. Stay United Resist external pressures that may attempt to pull you and your partner apart. Reaffirm your commitment to each other during the holiday season. Reflect and Adjust After the holidays, reflect on what worked well and what could be improved. Use this information to adjust your approach in future holiday seasons for even smoother experiences. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blackmarriagetherapy/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blackmarriagetherapy/support
In this episode of Truthspresso Express I examine a 2017 contributing article from the Huffington Post. David Wygant, a "dating and relationship coach" argues that we need to "redefine" marriage to fit modern society. It's more involved than taking a fun personality quiz to find out (although that does exist- see below!) While different selves arise at different times, this can be helpful way of discerning and reflecting on how you operate in the world - how you work, your eating habits, how you walk, your posture... even how you make your bed. What if, instead of expecting ourselves and those around us to move on from the loss of a loved one, we made space for loss to become part of the new life being created? This is a very exciting episode as it is our very first live episode recorded at our annual gala! We are joined by the incredible grief educator and motivational speaker, Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, to discuss how she navigated the loss of an infant and her husband in the light of publicity that followed a viral photograph she took. We also discuss how Hannah has gotten through difficulties before looking into how to support people through loss, why nobody actually knows what to do or say, and how allowing people to feel and experience things in their own way is impactful. Finally, she shares some research she has done on grief and leaves us with the powerful comfort that our loved ones are always with us. This has truly been a whirlwind summer of travel and exciting changes for us, and last week was no exception as we flew to NYC to be on the Tamron Hall Show! In this episode, we're sharing all the details of our experience in the city, from being on the show, to our run-in with a hilarious celebrity and our favorite spots in NYC. We're also sharing our thoughts on the autumnal equinox and embracing the opportunity for balance after a super busy season. Resources mentioned: Watch our segment on the Tamron Hall Show! Liz's Huffington Post Article 3 key takeaways from our impromptu NYC trip: At times it feels as if we've shared our love story a million times, but as long as it inspires others to live and love as their most authentic selves, we will continue to tell it. The entire crew that runs the Tamron Hall show is amazing! Our hair and makeup artists were incredible, the on set crew made us feel so comfortable, and we were in awe watching Tamron herself transition from segment to segment with so much grace. We're so so grateful to have been a small part of the show! The autumnal equinox is a time of balance: 12 hours of dark and 12 hours of light per day for a few days. Today's show is a discussion and review of Paramount Plus exclusive JERRY AND MARGE GO LARGE.Ever wonder what it would feel like to win the lottery? How about what it would feel like to KNOW you're going to win the lottery? Well, Jerry and Marge Go Large is based on the true story of Jerry Selbee, who retired from the Kellogg's Cereal factory after 42 years and had no idea what to do with himself, and his wife Marge Selbee, who up until Jerry played the state lottery lived a very normal life as a homemaker and grandmother. One day, Jerry came across a brochure for a state lottery game Winfall. Jerry, being good at math, a statement used in the movie as a comedic bit as Jerry is obviously a math whiz, figures out that there is a flaw in Winfall and it might be possible to net a guaranteed win if he bought enough tickets. In 2018, journalist Jason Fagone wrote a fantastic super long article on the Selbee's, which was adapted into our feature film today. So let's get into the film adaptation of the amazing life of the everyday average retirees Jerry and Marge in JERRY AND MARGE GO LARGE.Huffington Post Article - https://highline.huffingtonpost.com/articles/en/lotto-winners/Thanks for listening and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano. “Wild bees are our best pollinators, yet pesticides, pathogens and industrial farming are devastating their numbers,” reads the subheading of Rowan Jacobsen’s recent Huffington Post article, Are We Handling The Bee Crisis All Wrong? “Is there a better way to work with them?” In this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI, Rowan Jacobsen examines whether public misperceptions have led us down the wrong path in coping with the crisis of vanishing bee populations worldwide.
Corey is a comedian and author from Georgia touring around the United states. Whether on stage by himself or with his “wellRED” tour group Drew and Ryan, he is always mixing comedy with social and political issues. Corey doesn’t reinforce prejudices in his work but rather challenges and normalizes difference. I came across Corey in a Huffington Post Article about a guy that opened up his home/yard and ordaining services to same sex couples that weren’t allowed to get married at other venues. Corey is that guy. Corey tells some powerful stories about his great friends, one who happens to be gay and has certain places he feels he cannot go as well as an African American friend who was robbed and shot but never told the cops out of fear that he would end up in jail. It is not Corey’s mission to make change or virtue signal. His mission is to make people laugh and earn an income. The messages he brings to comedy on stage are what he truly believes. His work is just him being himself. www.coreyforrester.com Send me an email! ben@heroicminds.live
In this episode, we are joined by business powerhouse Ruth Soukup. Ruth shares her incredible journey of overcoming depression, suicide attempts, and self-harm to becoming a healthy mom and wife and successful entrepreneur. Ruth also shares why her motto "Do it Scared" is so important for her both in life and business. In this episode we discuss: 1. Why you should bravely take action in your life and business, even if you're terrified 2. How to recognize your unique brand of fear 3. How to break through debilitating cycles and find courage Favorite quotes: 1. Stop chasing the numbers that you think mean you're popular and start chasing the numbers that are actually going to make a difference in your business. 2. So often people think that “well I need more page views or I need more likes on Instagram or I need more followers in order to make more money,” and that's absolutely not true. If you're not leveraging the audience you have, you're never going to be leveraging the audience you wish you had. 3. It is because of those hard times, not despite them, that I'm now able to have the business that I have. 4. There was never one moment when it magically all turned around. I think so often in life we expect there to be this magical moment, you know this huge turning point of saying “oh from now on my life is going to be different.” It didn't work that way for me. 5. No matter how badly you screw up your life, you can always turn it around. 6. Fear impacts us, whether we call it fear or anxiety or we call it this apprehension about moving forward. 7. Once you can start to identify that fear and start to see those patterns in your life, that's when you can start to do something about it. In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What do I need to do to make my skin look great as I near my 40s? (48:26) 2. What should I do if I don't agree with all of my church's teachings? (54:50) 3. How do I know what to invest in with my business? (58:56) Links to great things we discussed 1. Do It Scared 2. The Greatest Showman Soundtrack 3. The Good Place 4. The Alter Ego Effect 5. It's official, you guys requested more 'Life's Not That Serious' episodes so I'm delivering. Today, we're talking about distancing ourselves from our goals, when I first heard this it gave me a total lightbulb moment. The concept makes goals more attainable if you're consciously or subconsciously putting distance between you and something you want. Plus, a great article on how you don't owe anyone an interaction, a concept especially valid for vegans or people living a 'different' lifestyle where others have a lot of questions. And how our ability to be kind erodes when we aren't kind to ourselves. If there's something you want to hear discussed on a LNTS episode, let me know over on Instagram. It's time to be intentional about walking in your true identity and moving past the persona into authenticity. In the words to Meek Mills “It’s levels to this”, said Dr. Glover referring to mental illness during her interview. “You would never tell someone who broke their ankle to smoke weed and their ankle will heal on its own.” So many times we hear that taking medication for mental illness is for crazy people or it will make you feel like a zombie. It actually discouraged Kea for taking medication. According to an article by NBC, one in six Americans take psychotropic medication---mostly antidepressants. This week's episodes address taking medication for mental illness with two psychiatrists of the Thrive Mindfulness Project, Dr. Doomes and Dr. Glover. Medical & Mental Health Terms: Psychotropic medications: any medication that is used to treat a mental disorder (encompasses meds for anxiety, depression, bipolar and psychotic disorders) Psychologist: One who has a doctorate in psychology (either a Ph.D. or a Psy.D) Psychiatrist: A type of physician. One who attended medical school then did a four-year residency in psychiatry, a medical specialty focusing on mind-body interactions and mental disorders and license to medication. Psychiatric NP: nurse-practitioners who are licensed to prescribe medications Therapist: Can be a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker trained in psychotherapy, LMFT (licensed marriage and family therapist) or LMHC (licensed mental health counselor). Each of the above professionals has a different and distinct way of training and length of time spent in training. Typically, psychiatrists and psychologists spend the most years in training and/or research. Psychologists are usually extensively trained in psychotherapy. Psychiatrists are trained in psychotherapy and in medical and mental health disorders. Summary Mike and I somehow end up in a debate on “what is a hipster?” It’s an old conversation, from 2014. I honestly can’t remember how it started but it did lead to a deeper (?) conversation about craftship, apprenticeship, and mentorship. You have to wait about 10 min to get to that part but I found listening to us figure out what a hipster is, kind of amusing. Then, we talk about the difference between craft, apprenticeship, and mentorship compared to design-based problem-solution-type business models. In this double length episode, explore the clash between the religious and the spiritual on the subject of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgender. Discover why religious, Bible based arguments against homosexuality are founded upon misunderstanding and mistranslation both spiritual and literal. Packed with pertinent information founded in the historical and linguistic study of the actual texts of the Bible (especially the infamous Leviticus verses), this episode tackles the problem of belief based homophobia both from a spiritual standpoint and an academic/theological standpoint. Whether religious or spiritual, there is much to be learned here to help humanity understand the divine reality of the feminine and masculine within themselves. Only by removing the blinders of belief based intolerance can we all step forward in understanding and acceptance of what lies within all of humanity. Show note Resources and References: This episode draws heavily from the section of C.C. Campbell's book The Stolen Light of Women, titled 'When Love Is Blind'. We recommend reading her work if you wish full access to the arguments made in this episode and the bibliography behind it. This is a special episode as we recorded live on Blab.im. It allows us to be seen on video while guests are able to interact live with us by chatting. This episode is all about connecting. Everyone, especially children, want to feel connected. When they don't feel connected at home, school, or within the community, they will find connection through bad behavior including sex, drugs, gangs, etc. This is why kids engage in this kind of behavior is that they want to feel connected. Jason mentions having dinner together and how doing that 3 times a week or more can reduce alcohol and drug use by half. It's not just about the meal but it provides a time to talk and find out about their day or what they are doing. One of the most important things to learn is empathy. Having empathy for your children allows them to feel understood and therefore connected. We cover more on empathy in Episode 18. We then discuss a Huffington Post Article written by Author/Speaker which offers 5 ways to connect: 1) Ask them questions about their life – most parents have no clue what is going on – If they don't want to talk, it may mean they feel disconnected 2) Hug, touch, or sit near them – We all need touch and kids really like it 3) Figure out what they like and learn about it – Showing an interest in what they do or like makes them feel connected 4) Have technology-free times and places – If you are on the phone or computer you may as well not even be there 5) Play and do activities with them – not everyone likes to talk. Whether its a game, sport, and craft, kids all have something they like.…

Liquid Independence, the blogger behind Freedom 35 Blog, and I talk about investing in farmland and his goal to be financially free by 35 years old. Long episode description: When I was in Vancouver in June for my bi-annual visit with the HB, I scheduled some time to talk to one of the first personal finance bloggers I got to know almost 4 years ago. His blogger name is Liquid Independence and he runs the investment blog Freedom 35 Blog. As you can guess from the name of his blog, his vision is to do everything he can to achieve complete financial independence by 35 years old. Not only is that a pretty incredible goal to have (I’m just hoping to save up enough for retirement by 65 personally), but he is super savvy when it comes to property investment. He owns his own condo as well as some farmland in Saskatchewan. In this episode, I discuss with him at length his property investment strategies and what steps you need to take in order to become a farm investor too. Since Liquid’s journey is so interesting, I’ve pulled some of the best and most relevant blog posts of his and listed them below. I’ve also done a bit of research and found some other great resources about investing in farmland in case anyone (like myself) is Googling stuff about it right now. Sister Jenna, Host of the America Meditating Radio Show, discusses the essence of Raja Yoga, as we approach the First Annual International Day of Yoga. History has left us with a variety of forms of yoga to practice, and each one emerged to assist in a particular area of our lives. We can use yoga to liberate our body from physical discomfort or to liberate our minds from experiences of the past. The word yoga itself means ‘union'. It generally refers to the union of the individual consciousness or soul with the Universal Consciousness, often referred to as God. With the modern day emphasis on physical health and fitness, many people think of yoga only as physical exercises – asanas or postures – but these are only the surfaced aspects of what has been termed ‘the science of unfolding the infinite potentials of the human mind and soul.' In essence, Raja Yoga is about connecting the Soul to God and through this, experience one's real self, not that of what we have learned to be. The opportunity in Raja Yoga is in how long you can maneuver that consciousness and be your real self. Then, how can we apply that awareness to our everyday lives, so we can keep a grasp on what is real from what is an illusion. Imagine, being able to realize yourself as you truly are: a good, beautiful, powerful, clean and clear soul. Check out Sister Jenna's Huffington Post Article on "Yoga Awakens the World."
