Hi! I'm Roland, lucky human being and #everydaygreenie. I consider myself a life enthusiast, sustainability polemicist and general all-round frother. I do, however, get pretty anxious about climate change, which tends to form the basis of my recordings. I do this podcast to hopefully inspire other…

Where oh where would we be without surfing, to practice thinking thoughts, and where oh where would we be without this podcast, to call ourselves out for thinking the most silly ones. * And then occasionally - just occasionally - explore the environmental narrative of Australia just long enough to hear a big echoey thunk, and realise we've actually... struck pure+critical gold? Look, I don't want to toot my own horn with too many words here, but I called this one to a tee. * The EXACT scenario we projected a few episodes ago, about how suss it seemed that a "good news" research paper could come out about the Great Barrier Reef days before a vote in front of the World Heritage Committee, has played out EXACTLY how you and I discussed it could. FOI documents proving how vulnerable our scientific institutions are to budgetary intervention, and how high and dry that leaves us regular Aussies in the conservation of our most previous survival assets. * It's all a bit farked really, but still no reason not to have a laugh. In my view there's no overstating the significance of surfing as the holy grail of mental health preservation. I reckon even the shittiest surf is better than no surf at all, for the simple reason of connection time. Vibing with nature, plugging into the mainframe, self-observation/sublimation/preservation, whatever you want to call it... for vitality, there's just nothing like surfing. Rob works with Waves of Wellness, a charity administering surf therapy to people with the most to gain from feeling ocean energy in their chests. Genuine stoke sessions! I’ve been wondering if maybe the meaning of life is to accept in any given moment that we’re hurtling towards oblivion no matter what, and still be able to have a laugh about things. N’mean? So what’d we talk about this episode. Hmm. Greta Thunderbird. How I’m a hypocrite. Below Deck. Why I’m a hypocrite. E-bikes. Emissions reduction targets. Chris Hemsworth. Bit of everything I suppose? Talking about the unresolved genocide of Australia’s First Nations is fraught with social peril, not least for a white bloke of insane privilege like me. But I definitely don’t think that’s a valid reason not to discuss it! Truth is, this episode is big. Jimmy Cocking heads up the Arid Lands Environment Centre, but only when he’s not directing energy down the myriad of other channels along his equilibrium of environmental integrity. I wanted to talk to him about fracking, amongst the other climatic challenges facing desert communities. The climate is an alarming emergency that for most of the world is happening in slow motion. G’daaaaaaaaaay MATES! This episode is with Ngangiwumirr and Arrende woman Rayleen Brown, eminent Australian authority on native food. As far as social efficiency goes, Rayleen’s industry seems like a total no brainer to me. Prioritising wild-harvested native foods with indigenous conservation techniques is such a powerful opportunity to contend with two big problems at the same time! Those problems being 1) healing the as yet conspicuously-unspeakable Australian genocide, in relation to 2) our perpetual deficit of willingness for meaningful climate change action. The Great Australian Suffrage of Environmental Connectivity, volume 2020. Know what I’m getting at? I reckon we need to urgently increase our sustainability efforts, and respecting the expertise of the greatest conservationists in history seems like a bloody obvious start!!! I think my excitement got in my way a little bit this conversation! I was frothing so hard on the opportunity to talk to this bloke, but also uncomfortably aware of how time-critical his schedule was, and how talking to a completely uneducated armchair scientist like me ranked very, very, very low as a priority. Dr Charlie Huveneers is a professor at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia, and as much of an authority on sharks as they come. I reckon I could have talked to him for hours on end, but we only had 45 minutes and I wanted to pick his brains about the most controversial aspects of the great white shark debate that’s currently ravaging ocean communities. My endless thanks again to Dr. Huveneers for being so generous with his time when he could have easily just told me to bugger off! This was such a privilege. Hope you enjoy it friends, rols xox

No prizes for guessing where we podcasted from - that’s right, the sunken place, the bottom of the bloody ocean of madness that is the Coronavirus-ridden world of 2020. Enjoy our uneducated and impassioned analysis of pandemic-life! #thesunkenplace #fobandrols
The other day me good m8 Sam and I cracked a few cold tins down at the beach and shot the breeze, mainly idiosyncrasies about making coffee and 4x4s. Fun yarning and good quarantine listening!
Leah and I have been mates for a good while now. She is the weapon behind @leahsmark_illustration and a gangster eco ninja. This podcast has been a long time coming!!! We talked about, well, pretty much all the things. I got very very close to being swung at by a stranger recently for stepping between him and a woman he was abusing, we talked about that. Surf rage, gender, being “busy”, climate change, the pill... it was such a fun ramble! We didn’t plan it, but a big part of what made this recording special was talking about mental health. Being diagnosed with depression was probably the most catalytic experience of my life. It forced me to take responsibility for my happiness - to acknowledge how much of my quality of life is a choice - and it was cathartic to share moments of rock bottom (as it always it, right?!). Very grateful for this chat, thanks for the time and space lady. www.emuparade.org https://www.leahsmark.com.au/
I got fined over the New Year’s holiday period for making people free coffee in exchange for rubbish they picked up at my favourite local beach. It sucks! Particularly as I’m less than two months out from leaving on the biggest one man cleanup expedition in Australian history. I’ll be circumnavigating the coasts throughout 2020 to pick up as much rubbish as I can... goes without saying that hopefully this doesn’t keep happening. But who better to yarn to about it to than my INeedYouMan confidant @antoineaustin as we enjoyed some fresh air in his front yard. Impossible not to feel good hanging out with this bloke. Thanks for listening!!! xox #thesunkenplace
