Welcome back to Thinking Tackle Uncut — and this week, it's a lively one! With Tom Dove calling in sick, Damo, Adam and Neil Spooner hold down the fort to talk about the crazy run of huge carp being caught this autumn — including 70s on the horizon and the latest from Spooner's 50 Cup Competition (now pushing 80!). The lads chat about how the clocks are going back, changing conditions, warm autumns, and irrigation waters are creating monster carp across the UK — and share stories of incredible fish, including Grumpy at 56lb 12oz and The Carving at 53lb. There's laughter, chaos, and a few proper nuggets of angling insight as Damo and Spooner discuss:

When the directors of Pulp Fiction and Desperado joined forces in 1996, nobody expected the chaos that followed. From Dusk Till Dawn is part crime thriller, part vampire splatterfest, and entirely unforgettable. This week, the Born to Watch crew sinks their teeth into the film that turned George Clooney from TV doctor to Hollywood icon.Whitey, Damo and Gow hit the road to El Rey, cocked, loaded, and possibly armed with a "dick gun." The boys dive straight into the movie's outrageous tonal shift: one moment it's a gritty outlaw chase, the next it's a full-blown blood-soaked vampire brawl. Half road movie, half horror comedy, From Dusk Till Dawn remains one of cinema's wildest left-turns – and the lads can't get enough of it.They reminisce about seeing it for the first time, back when nobody knew the twist. Gow remembers sitting in a dark cinema thinking it was just a stylish Tarantino heist until all hell literally broke loose. Damo recalls wearing out the VHS tape twice in a row, and Whitey laughs about taking five unsuspecting mates to see it just to watch their jaws drop. This is movie memory at its finest: the mid-'90s, Empire magazines, no spoilers, no internet, just word-of-mouth madness. The conversation slides quickly from Clooney's charisma to Quentin Tarantino's unnerving performance as Richie Gecko, possibly his best acting turn. Damo describes him as “quiet, creepy and dangerous,” while Gow compares his brotherly chemistry with Clooney to "a bomb about to go off." The trio agree Clooney oozes movie-star presence, Harvey Keitel grounds the chaos, and Juliette Lewis somehow still looks 23 for the next 20 years. And then there's Salma Hayek. The fellas do not hold back on the famous Titty Twister dance scene, the snake, the stumble, the hips, and Tarantino's now-infamous foot fetish. Whitey confesses it's "maybe the sexiest dance in movie history," while Damo says it's proof every song has an inner stripper. The music, the lighting, the moment – pure '90s cinematic magic.Between the beer, blood, and banter, the boys celebrate everything that makes From Dusk Till Dawn such gleeful trash. They quote the immortal "Mexican or domestic?" gag, debate the "ugly snorbs" among the vampire horde, and burst into laughter, recalling Clooney's moral compass, the bad guy with the good heart. There's genuine affection for how the film refuses to play by any rules. In Film School for F-Wits, Whitey goes full academic, calling the film the "ultimate tonal shift" and challenging the others to name a movie that turns harder or faster. Damo nominates a few classics, Gow brings his rugby grand-final energy, and the chat devolves into biscuits, Monte Carlos and Venetians, proof that even when the vampires attack, Born to Watch stays on brand. From the "popcorn popping in the servo" opening to Cheech Marin's triple role and the legendary Titty Twister monologue, the episode is wall-to-wall chaos, nostalgia and laughs. By the time the guys hit The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, it's clear this flick isn't high art, but it's pure fun. A 7.2 on IMDb? The crew say it's worth every drop of blood and beer.So grab a cold one, reload your dick gun, and join Whitey, Damo and Gow as they revisit From Dusk Till Dawn, the movie that proved you never know what's lurking inside the bar until the sun goes down.#BornToWatch #FromDuskTillDawn #GeorgeClooney #QuentinTarantino #RobertRodriguez #SalmaHayek #90sMovies #MoviePodcast #FilmNerds #MovieNight

Za to sladico vzamemo kisla jabolka, sorte zlati delišes. Operemo jih in s posebnim pripomočkom očistimo koščice. As I was prepping these episode notes, I got a call about a matter concerning my Sailors that I needed to address. With that said, enjoy these ChatGPT-generated notes and enjoy this episode. You'll see very early in the episode that we put our hearts into it. - Damo   Episode Description:   This episode kicks off with weather talk and Halloween banter before shifting into reflection as Damo asks, “When's the last time you were let down?” The conversation evolves into leadership mode as he introduces The Vibe Check—a new way to bridge influencers and skeptics across the command. From there, Damo and Damon explore what it means to “zero out at the pursuit of excellence,” setting the tone for an unfiltered discussion on accountability and consistency. The guys dive deep into the RSCA evaluation system and question whether it rewards authenticity or compliance. Damon reminds listeners that leadership happens at your pace, not at the world's. The conversation then pivots to Sailor 360, execution mistakes, and how leaders can avoid burnout by doing the basics well. In this week's Do Better segment, the focus is on poor meetings and the people who just “know they wrong.” Damo and Damon also unpack the viral DoorDash story and tie it to accountability in and out of uniform. The episode closes with a look at the Barracks Task Force, why leaders are afraid to lead in the IG era, and how to professionally address both seniors and subordinates when they make mistakes. Damon and Damo break down the latest NAVADMIN, and Damo closes with his Pick of the Week—Tim Grover's Relentless—a book that ties every message together: discipline, mentality, and excellence. From the smoky streets of Little Italy to the milk-stained benches of a hitman's apartment, Born to Watch takes aim at one of the most unique and controversial action dramas of the '90s with its Leon: The Professional (1994) Review. In this week's episode, Whitey, Damo, and Dan on the Land dive deep into Luc Besson's stylish, unsettling, and surprisingly heartfelt film about an unlikely bond between a hitman and a 12-year-old girl.Would this movie be made today? Probably not. But that's part of its enduring intrigue. The crew revisit the world of Jean Reno's stoic assassin, Gary Oldman's manic DEA agent, and Natalie Portman's breakout performance as Matilda, the orphan who turns vengeance into a calling. As the boys reminisce, they take a nostalgic trip back to 1994, the year that gave us Green Day's Dookie, Nirvana's Unplugged, Pearl Jam's Vitalogy, and The Offspring's Smash. It was also the year they thought they were "arty as hell" watching French cinema in suburban multiplexes. Cue the milk, the braces, and the John Wayne impressions; this episode delivers the perfect blend of pop culture, humour, and heartfelt nostalgia that makes Born to Watch such a cult favourite.Damo questions the fascination with milk-drinking hitmen, Dan lists the defining albums of '94, and Whitey recalls seeing the film in cinemas, not realising it would later feel very different once he had an 11-year-old daughter of his own. Together, they unpack the film's layered characters:Leon (Jean Reno): slow, gentle, and dangerous, with an oddly pure soul.Matilda (Natalie Portman): vulnerable yet vengeful, performing far beyond her age in a debut that stunned the industry.Stansfield (Gary Oldman): a villain so unhinged, it's impossible to look away. His Beethoven-fuelled rampage remains one of the most gloriously overacted performances in movie history. The trio debates whether the film's tone, which sits somewhere between action, arthouse, and morality play, could survive modern scrutiny. There's talk of Luc Besson's eccentric direction, Portman's controlled emotional performance, and the film's moral discomfort that keeps audiences divided decades later. They also share behind-the-scenes gems, such as Portman's parents' restrictions on smoking scenes, her early mastery of on-screen crying, and Luc Besson's knack for finding raw emotion in unlikely places. Damo draws parallels to The Exorcist, Dan applauds Reno's physical subtlety, and Whitey argues that Portman should have received an Oscar nomination if not for Anna Paquin's earlier win for The Piano. The gang laugh their way through some classic Born to Watch segments:The Cry-Meter: Whitey admits to misty eyes (7.5%) during the early tragedy. The Snorb's Report: Featuring Elle Macpherson in Sirens, naturally. The Hit, Sleeper, and Dud: With shoutouts to The River Wild, Wagons East, and Legends of the Fall.By the end, the trio agree that Leon remains both haunting and hypnotic, a masterpiece of tone, performance, and ambiguity. It's a film that feels both dangerous and tender, and is completely unforgettable.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Was Gary Oldman the most unhinged villain of the '90s? Why do all hitmen love milk? Should Natalie Portman have won an Oscar for her debut?Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods. Paul Verhoeven is officially a Born to Watch legend, but this week the boys go deep into his most infamous film to find out if Showgirls (1995) deserves a spot at the top of the Rank Bank or belongs buried under a mountain of glitter and regret. The Showgirls (1995) Review will be a lot of fun. From the moment Nomi Malone hitchhikes into Las Vegas with dreams of stardom and a suitcase full of questionable choices, Verhoeven's neon-soaked disaster invites every kind of reaction. Whitey, G-Man and Damo rip through the plot with their trademark mix of outrage and disbelief, tackling everything from Elizabeth Berkeley's career-ending performance to Kyle MacLachlan's slippery pool scene that's become cinematic legend for all the wrong reasons. Was Showgirls ever meant to be serious? Could it have worked as a satire? The crew debates whether Verhoeven's direction and Joe Eszterhas's ludicrous script are misunderstood genius or just cinematic malpractice. Damo argues that it's a "full mind-body spiritual experience," while Whitey insists it's “a masterpiece of shit." G-Man tries to stay objective, but even he can't defend dialogue this wooden or acting this drenched in baby oil.The team delves into the film's troubled production history, including Berkeley's disastrous fallout from Saved by the Bell, Verhoeven's later confession that he pushed her into cartoonish exaggeration, and Kyle MacLachlan's stunned reaction at the premiere: "I was absolutely gobsmacked." They explore how Showgirls was panned on release, only to rise again as a cult classic, the sort of “so-bad-it's-good” masterpiece that packs midnight screenings and inspires drag-queen tributes around the world. No Born to Watch review would be complete without the Snorbs Report, and this week it's a full-length epic. From the film's Razzie nominations to its $100 million home-video redemption, the boys chronicle how Showgirls became both an artistic failure and a commercial success. There's trivia about its banned trailer, its notorious NC-17 rating, and Verhoeven's history of pushing boundaries, from Basic Instinct to Starship Troopers. In true Born to Watch fashion, the lads discover a few accidental highlights: Gina Gershon's camp brilliance, the hilariously terrible fight choreography, and Robert Davi's unforgettable line delivery that cements his place in movie-villain history. They even crown Showgirls the global champion of "wank-per-capita cinema", a category no one asked for but everyone understands.By the end, they decide Showgirls is a film that must be seen to be believed. It's equal parts erotic thriller, unintentional comedy, and cautionary tale about a tragic career. Whether you love it, hate it, or just can't look away, Showgirls remains a cinematic experience unlike anything else.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONWas Showgirls a misunderstood genius or glorious trash? Is Nomi Malone the most unlikeable lead in movie history? About Our Guest — Courtney A. Barber   Courtney A. Barber is a retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Petty Officer, motivational speaker, three-time published author, and certified life purpose coach with over 25 years of military leadership experience. A Fayetteville, North Carolina native, Courtney is the founder of Sapphire Veteran HR, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women veterans in Hampton Roads transition from service to civilian life with confidence and community. After a decorated Navy career, Courtney transformed her journey of adversity, faith, and resilience into a personal mission to empower others through her brand, Unapologetically Favored—a movement and mindset that encourages people to walk boldly in their truth. She has authored multiple books including Unapologetically Favored, Wake Up. Turn Up. Bless Up., and Never Be Afraid to Eat Alone, each blending leadership, spirituality, and personal growth. In December 2023, she served as part of the MyNavy Coaching Team, leading a five-day Coaching Master Course in San Diego to develop the next generation of Navy leaders. Today, Courtney continues to mentor, teach, and inspire through her speaking engagements, coaching programs, and advocacy for authenticity, representation, and emotional intelligence in leadership. Learn more about her work at UnapologeticallyFavored.net or follow her on social media at @unapologeticallyfavored.   About This Episode:   In this episode, Damo and Aaron sit down with retired Master Chief and author Courtney Barber—North Carolina native and writer of Unapologetically Favored—for a raw, funny, and deeply human conversation about faith, identity, leadership, and redemption inside the U.S. Navy. The guys open with barbershop energy, debating Dave Chappelle vs. Eddie Murphy, fresh off Damo catching Chappelle live, before pivoting into Courtney's early life in the South, her family dynamics, and how her upbringing shaped the way she learned to love, trust, and lead. She opens up about her father figures, teenage pregnancy, abortion, and the boundaries she had to build to protect her peace. Courtney reflects on her early Navy journey—boot camp, A-school, and those unforgettable early days in uniform—sharing stories of laughter, adversity, and lessons learned. Aaron delivers a hilarious breakdown of “honch monsters,” and the crew swaps memories of Great Lakes and the RDC grind. Courtney discusses the mentors who taught her the value of training your reliefs, the importance of accountability, and what ultimately inspired her to write Unapologetically Favored after a viral post questioning empty “thank-you for your service” gestures. Listener questions about leadership spark a powerful exchange on the role of First Class Petty Officers and why leaders must trust their people enough to let them lead, fail, and grow. From being married against her nature and struggling with instinct to finally embracing her truth and telling her mom, Courtney walks listeners through the courage it took to live authentically under Don't Ask, Don't Tell. She shares the impact of good mentorship, the value of grace after mistakes, and how faith and resilience helped her rise through adversity. Damo introduces the idea of giving Sailors “scarlet letters” for their failures, which leads to a discussion about forgiveness, perception, and leadership growth. Courtney also reflects on what she learned from a failed BCA. It's three hours of honesty, humor, and hard-earned wisdom—laughter, confession, mentorship, and faith woven into one conversation. From barbershop debates to leadership lessons to spiritual redemption, this episode captures everything Permission to Speak Freely stands for: real people, real leadership, and real conversations that matter.       Do you have a “Do Better” that you want us to review on a future episode? Damon and Damo catch up as Damon highlights his first week as a CMC. Damo had to shave his mustache and did not like it one bit. The guys discuss the impact of the current furlough on servicemembers and civilian teammates, along with available resources for anyone in need. Diddy was sentenced to four years in prison after a guilty verdict in a prostitution case, and Damon makes a plea against political violence and mass shootings. Earlier this week, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and President Trump called top military generals and admirals to Quantico for a brief, summit, conference, or “All Call.” At the same time, the SecDef dropped a load of memos focused on refocusing the fleet and putting the warrior spirit at the forefront. This week's hero is Pfc. Jacklyn Harold Lucas, and last week's “Do Better” segment gets a much-needed follow-up with a shout-out to Freddy Whisner. A new listener-submitted “Do Better” sparks a conversation about how DRB can be handled more privately. The guys also debate whether the Super Bowl music choices alienate two-thirds of the NFL's fanbase as Damo praises PTA and Leo's latest movie, One Battle After Another, and much more.     Do you have a “Do Better” that you want us to review on a future episode? Nothing screams the early '90s more than a Tom Clancy thriller, and The Hunt for Red October (1990) might just be the finest adaptation of the bunch. This week on Born to Watch, we take a deep dive into Cold War tension, Sean Connery's questionable Russian accent, Alec Baldwin's finest non-30 Rock performance, and why this film still makes waves decades later. And yes, we're calling this the definitive The Hunt for Red October 1990 Review. It's all systems go as Whitey, G-Man, and DJ Strangles man the periscope and dive deep into this submarine classic. From the moment Connery's Ramíus announces his defection plan to the epic underwater cat-and-mouse chase, the boys break down what makes this a tight, thrilling, and surprisingly rewatchable flick. We cover everything: from Connery's incredible second-act career run (is Red October peak Connery?), to Alec Baldwin's short but strong tenure as Jack Ryan, to the underrated gravitas of Scott Glenn and Sam Neill. Add in a stellar supporting cast that includes Tim Curry, James Earl Jones, and Stellan Skarsgård, and you've got a Cold War nail-biter filled with testosterone, torpedoes, and tense moral decisions. There's time to unpack the politics, too, the Clancy realism, the U.S. Navy flex, and that juicy little nugget of 1990s pre-internet espionage fantasy. But of course, it's not all sonar pings and missile tubes. The crew gets sidetracked (as always) by tales of sub dreams, questionable airline bear policies, and Damo's beer-and-hot-dog benchwarmer story. The team also revisits the box office and critical legacy of The Hunt for Red October. Was it Oscar-worthy? How do the effects hold up in 2025? Is this really the best Jack Ryan movie? Spoiler: the debate gets passionate, and there's no clear winner between Baldwin, Ford, Affleck, Pine, and Krasinski, but there is a winner for worst submarine hygiene. Cigarettes below deck? Not a good time. With classic Born to Watch segments like “Overs and Unders," "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” and a brilliant fan voicemail, this episode has something for every cinephile, Cold War nerd, and nostalgic '90s action fan.So fire up the Caterpillar Drive, crank the Basil Poledouris score, and set your course for one of the most unexpectedly hilarious and insightful takes on a certified action-thriller classic.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs The Hunt for Red October the greatest Jack Ryan movie?Should smoking on submarines be an executable offence?Did Jack Ryan seriously buy a business class seat for a teddy bear?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and tell us if this Cold War classic is a certified banger — or just blowing smoke.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods. The guys open this episode with heartfelt farewells, showing love to Tisha and Denisse as they step away for personal reasons. Both sisters received flowers and well-wishes from the team. Congratulations go out to Captain Desmond K. Walker, honored with the FY26 Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award, along with all other recipients. The crew also sends condolences to CMSAF David A. Flosi and family on the passing of his wife, Katy. Damon reflects on his experiences in Newport, Rhode Island and Millington, Tennessee during the CMC/COB course, while Aaron raises the question—is Memphis BBQ overrated? Damo shares a personal story about the Philadelphia Police Department entering his mother's home. The team acknowledges that social media clip production may slow due to their new command responsibilities, sparking a larger discussion: how can leaders realistically balance social media and deckplate leadership? The conversation ties into the Navy's updated social media policy and handbook, as well as CNO's latest “C-Note,” where he defines The Foundry. Hero of the Week returns with a spotlight on Private First Class Charles Ralph Johnson. Updates on the Angelina Resendiz case lead to a debate about the limits of invasive leadership. The crew tackles listener questions about rank privileges and a troubling report of a new mother being excluded from the CPO Initiation and Pinning Ceremony. Other hot topics include an Army dining hall with an “F” rating still serving meals, strategies to shift command culture in the face of widespread disciplinary issues, and Damon's surprise at the “Pick of the Week” segment. This episode opens with a look at military history — why the United States shifted from the Department of War to the Department of Defense, and whether the language change reflected a broader shift in strategy. Damo tries his best to explain, while Aaron joins him in discussing the Navy's latest beard announcement and the Army's updated grooming standards. They also congratulate the newly pinned Chief Petty Officers and ask the hard question: Can Master Chiefs add too much pressure during initiation season? The hosts provide updates on the Tamo complaint, former VCNO Burke's six-year sentence, and the charging of Angelina Resendiz's killer. Damo admits he's stressed and in need of a vacation, even after leave, while Aaron steps into therapist mode. They also break down the Naval Academy lockdown and the role of social media in spreading chaos. From there, the conversation pivots to culture: the Canelo vs. Crawford fight, Netflix's takeover of boxing, Dame Dash's appearance on the Breakfast Club, Cam'ron and Adrien Broner headlines, and even predictions for the movie of the year. The episode also salutes Constitution Day and Ombudsman Appreciation Day, and covers a wild Navy story about a man landing his plane on base twice. Of course, Damo can't resist bringing aliens back into the discussion. Finally, the conversation turns to the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The hosts reflect on what happened, why they waited to address it, and how service members responded online. Some mourned, others didn't, but violence is never the answer. What follows is a raw discussion about free speech, discipline, and the kind of leadership moments like this demand. Damon and Damo are back, calling an audible after a guest no-show (don't worry — he's safe and sound). The conversation kicks off with Damo asking how Chiefs really view CMCs, followed by his response to a negative Facebook comment about him. Fresh off an appearance on Theresa Carpenter's Stories of Service podcast, Damo challenges Damon to reflect on how far he's come.   The guys tackle a listener's suggestion to revamp the PFA with firefighting readiness tasks, react to the disappointing update in the death of CSSN Angelina Resendiz, and weigh the pros and cons of being stationed in your hometown for your first tour. Damon shares his first impressions of CMC turnover, and the two debate whether there's ever enough time to be a “bystander hero.”   They also break down the viral wrestling match between Raja Jackson and Army vet Syko Stu, laugh through the strangeness of dreams about cheating partners, and highlight Admiral Caudle's first All Hands Call aboard USS Truman with a “Sailor First” message. A few Reddit posts spark some impromptu motivation, the Cowboys trading Micah Parsons shakes up NFL fans, and Damon's “Do Better” of the week takes aim at tariffs. What happens when a sailor takes his leadership philosophy beyond the quarterdeck and into the podcast studio? Command Master Chief Damo McCullough's story illuminates how authentic conversations can transform military culture. From his Philadelphia roots to becoming a respected Navy leader, Damo shares the unfiltered journey that led him to create a podcast platform now boasting over 550,000 YouTube views and 100,000 downloads. His approach—speaking the "quiet parts out loud"—has created a unique space where sailors and leadership alike can engage in honest dialogue about military life, leadership challenges, and cultural issues that often remain unaddressed in formal settings.Damo's early career experiences with exceptional leaders who valued open communication shaped his philosophy that every sailor deserves a voice. When confronted with communication barriers between leadership and junior sailors around sensitive issues, he didn't just identify the problem—he created a solution through podcasting that has evolved into a thriving community over five years. The conversation explores how maintaining authenticity while advancing through the ranks presents both challenges and opportunities. As Damo notes, his podcast serves as an "integrity test," ensuring he embodies the leadership principles he advocates. What began as a way to help junior sailors see chiefs as relatable humans has expanded to influence leadership across the Navy, proving that speaking honestly doesn't hinder professional growth when done respectfully. For today's military members navigating service life, Damo's journey offers a compelling blueprint—demonstrating how traditional leadership values can adapt to connect with a new generation through digital platforms while preserving what matters most: mentorship, guidance, and mutual respect.Follow PTSF podcast - https://linktr.ee/PtsfpodcastSupport the showVisit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.comWatch episodes of my podcast:https://www.youtube.com/c/TheresaCarpenter76

Reaching out is a sign of strength.   Damon and Damo open with real life: parenting a clingy toddler while trying not to be the “threat dad.” He then walks through a packed few weeks—starting turnover, a Ceremonial Guard recruiting run at Great Lakes, and a whirlwind week working at the Guard. From there the fellas pivot to military news and leadership shifts: the 12-hour fire aboard USS New Orleans; Fleet Master Chief John Perryman's selection as the 17th MCPON and how alignment with the boss accelerates trust; a string of high-level shakeups (Air Force Chief Gen. David Allvin's retirement; VADM Nancy Lacore and RADM Jamie Sands relieved; USNA's change of command to LtGen Michael Borgschulte); and a look at the Fort Stewart workplace shooting response. They sit with harder headlines too: the reported suicide of recruit Kayshawn Wilkerson at Great Lakes and the loss of Aviation Boatswain's Jose Antonio Rivera Lynch IV during operations in the Timor Sea. Closer to home, they clock the National Guard presence in D.C., react to the phrase “last rank in which he served honorably,” and note USMC LtCol (ret.) Stuart Scheller's new role. Inside the Mess, Damo flags that MCPON has added “Get Real, Get Better” training into CPO Initiation—and asks if the culture shift is actually landing. The guys respond to a few listeners: do reenlistments still mean something or are we just signing paper; advice for clashing peers; why folks ghost in TAP; “have you ever taken your blouse off to drive home;” and young Sailors in race cars. In the Chief's Initiation (no longer Season) block, they talk non-select morale, the low numbers this year, and where leaders must step up for those who didn't pin—plus the moment you were when you got the call. The “Do Better” segment (Damon on clips; Damo on Chiefs in housing).
