In this episode, we dive headfirst into one of the most defining – and divisive – social phenomena of 1990s Britain: Lad Culture. From the beer-soaked pages of Loaded to the banter-fuelled chaos of TFI Friday, Lad Culture reshaped British masculinity, media, and nightlife in its own cheeky, irreverent image. Whether you loved it, hated it, or just got swept along with it, this cultural moment left a legacy that's still felt today. We trace its roots to the mid-90s launch of Loaded magazine, a publication that celebrated lager, football, music, and women with a wink and a smirk. With its tagline “For men who should know better,” the magazine ignited a publishing revolution and sparked a nationwide identity shift. Soon, the lads weren't just in magazines – they were all over our screens too, from the lovable oafs in Men Behaving Badly to the raucous party atmosphere of TFI Friday. Lad Culture wasn't confined to print and television. It bled into fashion, music, and the national psyche. Britpop bands like Oasis became lad anthems, while Paul Smith suits and Adidas Gazelles became part of the dress code. And of course, no discussion of Lad Culture would be complete without a visit to the pub – the spiritual home of the 90s lad and the birthplace of “banter” as both bonding ritual and social defence mechanism. But for all its charm and cultural clout, Lad Culture had a darker side. Its objectification of women, celebration of binge drinking, and paper-thin irony around political correctness drew increasing criticism as the decade progressed. As digital media rose and political realities shifted in the early 2000s, Lad Culture lost its edge – and its influence. Still, its impact lingers. From our advertising to our online discourse, echoes of Lad Culture remain part of how Britain talks, jokes, and remembers its recent past. In this episode, we unpack the rise and fall of the lads, and ask what their moment in the sun tells us about gender, identity, and the 1990s spirit of rebellion – both real and performative. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. With rumours intensifying that Keith Andrews is set to be unveiled as the new Head Coach of Brentford, long-time fans and Beesotted podcasters Billy ‘The Bee' Grant and Dave ‘Laney' Lane felt compelled to call an emergency podcast — not quite full-blown 999, but certainly a 111-level situation. For a club that prides itself on a data-led, carefully calculated approach, this potential appointment has raised more than a few eyebrows among the Brentford faithful.Andrews is a name that hasn't exactly been front and centre in Premier League coaching circles, making this feel like a typically left-field Brentford move — the kind we've seen before with great success, but which still invites uncertainty. Fans are understandably split: some are open-minded, trusting the club's track record in unearthing hidden gems, while others are questioning the logic behind taking such a big risk at such a crucial point in the club's development. In the podcast, Billy and Laney try to unpack what might be going on behind the scenes — from the club's desire to continue innovating, to the possibility that they see something in Andrews others have missed. They explore how Brentford, still punching above their weight in the Premier League, might benefit from fresh ideas and a new coaching philosophy. This is a pivotal moment for Brentford. One thing's certain: the next chapter will be watched very, very closely in TW8. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ivana Alfonso has worked many jobs since emigrating from Croatia at a young age. This conversation with legendary musician Tracey Thorn from one of The Shift's very early seasons is one of my very favourites. Back then covid was still a thing and these chats on zoom with incredible women were my life rafts. Anyway, we're revisiting Tracey because by the time you listen to this episode, Everything But The Girl will have very tentatively put their toe back on the stage at a couple of very small gigs in London. I'm not getting my hopes up too much (as I know Tracey doesn't loooove live performing, however, Tracey if you happen to read this, I know there are thousands and thousands of fans hungry for a tour...) The orginal show notes: Like many 80s kids, I grew up with today's guest. Tracey Thorn started early, forming The Marine Girls (once described as looking like they would “break your arm before they'd let you break their hearts”), while still at school, and Everything But The Girl, with her musical and life partner Ben Watt, whilst at university. Since then she's released three solo albums, three critically acclaimed memoirs - and had three children. Her fourth book - My Rock'n'Roll Friend - about her 37 year on-off friendship with Lindy Morrison (drummer of Australian band The Go-Betweens) is my favourite yet. Tracey talks success, power, the “constant slog” of making women's voices heard and why equality is a numbers game. She also tells us why menopause made her feel like she'd gone mad, the painful-but-liberating process of ageing and what to do about your statement hair going grey (asking for a friend!). * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including My Rock'n'roll Friend by Tracey Thorn and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. It's Australian Open week, we're back at Kingston Heath and today we chat with Hollywood royalty, the brilliant actor Michael Peña. This is a real treat. We start with the obvious - finding out why is he in Melbourne. As well as being an extraordinary actor, Michael is a massive golf fan, if you're at the Open this weekend at Kingston Heath, keep an eye out, he'll be there. He plays off a handicap of between 3 and 4, and tells Nick and Mark what his view of the sand belt courses is, and what it has been like playing golf in Melbourne.Michael explains how he got into golf, spoiler alert, it has to do with Jack Lemmon and James Garner, and he tells us about playing golf with his co-star in the movie 'Shooter' Mark Wahlberg in Vancouver.Mark wants to know whether there are similarities between how you execute acting roles and how you improve your golf game - Michael explains why he says there are, and how he goes about both improving his golf game, and preparing for an acting role.Michael has been in a some huge movies and TV shows, including Ant-Man which he tells us that after signing on he tried to get out of, and obviously ended up doing it. He tells us the story of why and what happened. He also explains how, when they were shooting the movie Fury, he and Shia LaBeouf felt when Brad Pitt walked in that they were now bit players and the movie was his. Nick likens it to how golfers felt when Tiger would play a tournament often.Nick wants to know who the best golfer, of the Hollywood actors, is. Michael names one and , slightly awkwardly, Nick knows exactly who this actor is immediately....possibly revealing a bit about his viewing habits. Mark asks Michael about how he masters accents, and he tells a very funny story involving a Nokia phone and an ex-girlfriend!Nick explains what he likes about Michael's golf game, and why he admires his ability on the course. And we wrap with some advice that Michaels late mother gave him about how to choose acting roles, which applies to each of us whatever we do.A great fun bonus pod with one of Hollywood's genuine nice guys, and a brilliant actor. We're here each week with the great support of PING, see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting. Just like they have with Nick O'Hern, PING will help you play your best. And the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. This week I had the pleasure of interview Nick Mair on the podcast. I met Nick on LinkedIn and was drawn to his authenticity and vulnerability and openness in sharing his mental health struggles. I often talk about the premise that purpose can be borne from the contrast of our suffering, and Nick is an example of that. Nick is now a mental health first aid trainer and on a mission to help people not only read the signs that someone could be thinking of taking their life, or be suffering anxiety, depression or psychosis, but to have the skills to be able to listen and de-escalate the situation....as he experienced when I spoke to Michael from Lifeline in his darkest hour. I didn't know about mental health first aid training until speaking to Nick and being a former Human Resources Director, I now feel urged to invite those who are in positions of influence to consider having your leaders to be mental health first aid qualified, or at best your entire organisation. When I think about the ripples of having these skills in the work environment and at home, we can really make an enormous impact. Please reach out to Nick so that we can make a real positive dent together in caring for those around us in a really simple yet powerful way. Here are Nick's details and what he gets up to Core offering: MHFA, MH awareness presentations, men's retreats, career coaching.
