Michael and Caleb dive into classic philosophical thought experiments to uncover Stoic solutions to impossible choices. From the infamous Trolley Problem to the Happiness Machine, they examine how Stoicism's focus on virtue, context, and roles provides a unique framework for moral decision-making.Unlike utilitarian or rule-based ethics, the Stoic approach emphasizes character over consequences, yet remains practical when facing life's hardest choices. This thought-provoking conversation challenges modern assumptions about ethical reasoning while revealing surprising Stoic positions on torture, self-sacrifice, and artificial pleasure.(01:57) Trolley Problem(14:35) Do Stoics Endorse Torture?(20:31) Happiness Machine(24:24) Utility Monster(27:14) Euthyphro Dilemma(35:53) Sinking Ship(40:59) Prisoner's Dilemma(46:11) Omelas Child(53:59) Takeaways***Download the Stoa app (it's a free download): https://stoameditation.com/podIf you try the Stoa app and find it useful, but truly cannot afford it, email us and we'll set you up with a free account.Listen to more episodes and learn more here: https://stoameditation.com/blog/stoa-conversations/Thanks to Michael Levy for graciously letting us use his music in the conversations: https://ancientlyre.com/

Today, we kick off with the bloke who went to Turkey looking like an extra from a low-budget soap and came back looking like a Hollywood leading man. His transformation's so intense, even his own mum double-takes at family dinners. On the music front, New Music Friday is dishing up fresh hits, though we're still debating whether any of them will make it past the "what was that song again?" phase. Oh, and here's a fun fact to keep you up at night: your shopping trolley may be dirtier than a nightclub toilet at 3 a.m. So next time you're doing the weekly shop, maybe pack some hand sanitiser—and gloves.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The New York City subway system turns 120 years old later this year so we thought we'd honor the world's longest subway system with a supersized overview history -- from the first renegade ride in 1904 to the belated (but sorely welcomed) opening of one portion of the Second Avenue Subway in 2017.New Yorkers like Alfred Ely Beach had envisioned a subway system for the city as early as the 1870s. Yet years of political delay and a lack of funding ensured that dreams of an underground transit would languish. It wasn't until the mid-1890s that the city got on track with the help of August Belmont and the newly formed Interborough Rapid Transit. We'll tell you about the construction of the first line, traveling miles underground through Manhattan and into the Bronx. How did the city cope with this massive project? And what unfortunate accident nearly ripped apart a city block mere feet from Grand Central? You'll also find out how something as innocuous sounding as the ‘Dual Contracts' actually became one of the most important events in the city's history, creating new underground passages into Brooklyn, the Bronx and (wondrously!) Queens. Then we'll talk about the city's IND line, which completes our modern track lines and gives the subway its modern sheen.Through it all, the New York City subway system is a masterwork of engineering and construction. In particular, after listening to this show, you won't look at the Herald Square subway station the same way again.Today's episode is a remastered and re-edited edition of two 2011 Bowery Boys podcasts, featuring newly recorded material to take the story to the present day.Visit the website for more information and images FURTHER LISTENINGOther Bowery Boys podcasts on the subway and mass transit:Miss Subways: Queens of the New York CommuteOpening Day of the New York City Subway The First Subway: Beach's Pneumatic MarvelSubway Graffiti 1970-1989Cable Cars, Trolleys and MonorailsNew York's Elevated Railroads The East Side Elevateds: Life Under the Tracks

Two Kerry TDs, Independent Michael Healy- Rae and Sinn Fein’s Pa Daly, have raised concerns about a HSE directive affecting University Hospital Kerry’s emergency department. They say when there are 20 or more people above what should be in the emergency department, these patients must be moved to a ward, even if there is no space. Jerry spoke to Michael Healy-Rae. After the interview Michael Healy-Rae forwarded an email he received from HSE CEO Bernard Gloster. Mr Gloster sent it while Deputy Healy-Rae was talking to Jerry. Mr Gloster made a number of points and said that since July, the HSE had managed to reduce the numbers on trolleys, both in ED and ward areas, by 22%. He also said this policy to send patients on trolleys to other parts of the hospital had been introduced in 2015 although not all hospitals had adopted it. He said those moved to wards are still counted as patients on trolleys. Mr Gloster also said moving those on trolleys to wards ensures better patient safety.

Trolley buses are going away as part of KAT Reimagined, a transit overhaul that will put more resources toward ridership over coverage. But downtown transportation isn't disappearing entirely. In addition to increasing frequency for buses that come downtown, Knoxville Area Transit is planning a downtown connector loop that would replace the trolleys to an extent. But not everyone agrees that's the best move. Ryan Wilusz and Brenna McDermott discuss how removing trolleys could affect locals and tourists, how new transportation concepts could fill this gap and whether the new downtown bus loop should be free. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com. Want more downtown analysis? A trip to the supermarket might seem like a shortcut to raised blood pressure with the cost of living crisis, but jokes aside it could actually be a life saver. As part of a UK study, electrocardiograms or ECG sensors were installed in the handles of supermarket trolleys to screen adults for abnormal heart while they shopped. The trial at four Sainsbury stores over three months screened more than 2000 adults by getting them to hold the trolley handle for at least minute. It then flagged people with irregular heat rhythms that could put them at risk of strokes for follow-ups. Professor Ian Jones of Liverpool John Moores University, is one of the study authors.
