But similar technology hasn’t always worked, as Amazon’s cashier-less system struggled in larger stores and still required human oversight. Lester Kiewit speaks to Brandon de Kock, Director of Storytelling at BrandMapp, about why retail staff remain essential even as stores introduce automated shopping solutions and what the future of in-store retail might look like when humans and technology work together. Send us a textPrepare your ears for 10 minutes or so of bonus MDC content based around car parking…After a recent trip to the town centre, Andy's found the multi-storey carpark now demands you pay in advance rather than upon return to your vehicle. It's a cash grab, and a pain in the backside! Jon's pet parking peeve is people leaving shopping trolleys in the spaces, we discuss whether you should be able to pay for a trolley by card, and even if the cattle grid ‘anti theft' system used to keep trolleys in their place could be used in schools, perhaps with special shoes like the bowling alley. Coincidentally, where are all these shoes now?!! Lastly, we talk about rubbish being thrown from cars, something Jon suggests should be punished by a 3 day stint in the clink. There's consultation on speed limits around Christchurch's Te Kaha stadium - once again. New Government rules are forcing the City Council to ask for public feedback for a second time. A 30 kilometre-an-hour limit was approved for multiple surrounding streets but can no longer be implemented because of the changes. Mayor Phil Mauger told Canterbury mornings although this feels like over-consulting, this needs to be right to ensure public safety. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, Mark dives into the chaotic, absurd and quite often traumatic world of shopping with neurodivergent children. If you've ever emerged from a supermarket having to impulse buy paracetamol just to get you through the shop, then this one's for you. Joining Mark is the brilliant Helen Stuart – a mum of six (four of her own and two step-children - all diagnosed or suspected neurodivergent), home educator, and co-founder of Thrive Together Training. Between them, they dissect the minefield of supermarkets, the unpredictability of meltdowns triggered by automatic doors, sensory overwhelm, the trauma of shopping for clothes, rage waiting, and the unholy panic when you realise the supermarket has unexpectedly moved everything around. This is a laugh-out-loud, painfully relatable episode for anyone who has ever had lofty ambitions to do a quick “top up shop”, before ending up having to negotiate UN-level peace deals with your child in the frozen food aisle. In this episode, we delve into a quality improvement project that transformed the resuscitation trolley system at our trust, saving over £7,500. What began as a problem with 14 separate orders for the same supplies—where items, like airways, were purchased in boxes of 50 when only one was needed—became an opportunity to streamline the process and reduce waste. By centralising stock and improving the ordering system, we eliminated unnecessary duplication and ensured better efficiency

From the infamous Trolley Problem to the Happiness Machine, they examine how Stoicism's focus on virtue, context, and roles provides a unique framework for moral decision-making.Unlike utilitarian or rule-based ethics, the Stoic approach emphasizes character over consequences, yet remains practical when facing life's hardest choices. His transformation's so intense, even his own mum double-takes at family dinners. The New York City subway system turns 120 years old later this year so we thought we'd honor the world's longest subway system with a supersized overview history -- from the first renegade ride in 1904 to the belated (but sorely welcomed) opening of one portion of the Second Avenue Subway in 2017.New Yorkers like Alfred Ely Beach had envisioned a subway system for the city as early as the 1870s. Yet years of political delay and a lack of funding ensured that dreams of an underground transit would languish. It wasn't until the mid-1890s that the city got on track with the help of August Belmont and the newly formed Interborough Rapid Transit. We'll tell you about the construction of the first line, traveling miles underground through Manhattan and into the Bronx. How did the city cope with this massive project? And what unfortunate accident nearly ripped apart a city block mere feet from Grand Central? You'll also find out how something as innocuous sounding as the ‘Dual Contracts' actually became one of the most important events in the city's history, creating new underground passages into Brooklyn, the Bronx and (wondrously!) Queens. Then we'll talk about the city's IND line, which completes our modern track lines and gives the subway its modern sheen.Through it all, the New York City subway system is a masterwork of engineering and construction. In particular, after listening to this show, you won't look at the Herald Square subway station the same way again.Today's episode is a remastered and re-edited edition of two 2011 Bowery Boys podcasts, featuring newly recorded material to take the story to the present day.Visit the website for more information and images FURTHER LISTENINGOther Bowery Boys podcasts on the subway and mass transit:Miss Subways: Queens of the New York CommuteOpening Day of the New York City Subway The First Subway: Beach's Pneumatic MarvelSubway Graffiti 1970-1989Cable Cars, Trolleys and MonorailsNew York's Elevated Railroads The East Side Elevateds: Life Under the Tracks
