Sales of plant-based milk have slowed in the past year, but Silk and So Delicious maker Danone still sees significant potential by focusing on fun in addition to function
In this episode of Wake Up and Read the Labels, Jen Smiley exposes the hidden ingredients in popular yogurts that may be causing inflammation, bloating, and gut issues. She breaks down why “healthy” options like Danon Light & Fit, So Delicious, Chobani Zero Sugar, and Silk aren't as clean as they seem—and what to look for instead. Learn how to spot artificial flavors, dead probiotics, and gut-disrupting additives, plus discover the best clean yogurt brands that actually support your health. Key Takeaways:Many popular yogurts contain artificial flavors, preservatives, and gut-disrupting additives.Non-fat dairy often comes from cows fed inflammatory diets, impacting the quality of the yogurt.Pasteurization after culturing kills beneficial probiotics, leaving you with “dead” yogurt.Stevia isn't as natural as it seems—it undergoes a harsh chemical process that can cause bloating.Truly clean yogurts, like Kalina, Coconut Cult, and CocoJune (pure coconut), contain live probiotics and high-quality ingredients.Fat in yogurt isn't the enemy—healthy fats help keep you full and satisfied. The food industry's misleading labels make it difficult to identify clean options, but the Read the Labels app can help you scan and verify your yogurt choices. “The mess is where you find the magic.” –Tess MastersYou have permission to go after whatever you want, no matter what. That's the idea behind Tess Master's new podcast It Has to Be Me.Tess has been on the show before and we've talked about eating to thrive and food choices and hormones and blender recipes. Today we're talking about the magic in the mess. What happens when you get really clear on what you want? What happens when you give yourself permission to go for what you want — and to celebrate all you've done? You have to go through the mess — the talking it through, the doubting, the crying, the rejoicing, the trying on different hats and deciding what is and isn't for you — to get to the magic. But you can get there and celebrate it!We talk about: Valuing stillness and quiet and listening to your intuitionYour purpose being connected to your heart's desireHow your capacity expands in “it has to be me” momentsLimiting your potential by not making time to be the healthiest, most energetic youMaking decisions based on your now or future self, not your past self, and differentiating between what is yours to be or do, and what isn'tI'm not enough and I'm too much are part of the same storyABOUT TESSTess Masters is a wellness coach, speaker, podcaster, chef, and author of The Blender Girl, The Blender Girl Smoothies, and The Perfect Blend published by Penguin Random House. “When you decide from a place of self-love about anything in your life, that's when your choices start to stick.”–Tess MastersCan you eat Oreos and be healthy? Tess Masters, author of The Blender Girl and creator of SK60® health programs says yes. It's all about balance — and not judging ourselves.Obsessing about food and letting food choices rule the rest of your life isn't healthy. What if instead, you felt really empowered about your food choices? What if you stayed present and enjoyed the eating experience? What if you noticed how you felt after eating different foods and used that to make decisions? What if you started from a place of self-love?Food is not just food. Tess reminds us that a lot of clarity comes when you are nourishing your body in a really strategic, efficient way with beautiful foods that help your body to function the way it's supposed to. What's murky that might be clear if you nurtured your body?We talk about: How to actually be kind to yourself when it comes to food and why we eat things that may not be the healthiest choicesThe power of the pause as a way to distract yourself from a food that might not make you feel great and the difference between really wanting something vs. a habitThe connection between stress sugar and dis-easeKnowing your superpowers or what's working and using that as an anchorThe power of gratitude and noticing both what's good and badBeing healthy, having energy, and looking and feeling amazing in perimenopause and menopauseABOUT TESSTess Masters is a lifestyle personality and author of The Blender Girl, The Blender Girl Smoothies, and The Perfect Blend published by Penguin Random House. Tess Masters is an actor, cook, lifestyle personality, and author of The Blender Girl, The Perfect Blend, The Detox Dynamo Cleanse, and The Blender Girl Smoothies app and book. In high demand as a spokesperson, presenter, and recipe developer, Tess collaborates with leading food and lifestyle brands. Tess is the global spokesperson for KitchenAid blenders, ambassador for Massel broths, and has presented videos for Sprouts Market, Silk, So Delicious, Earthbound Farm, Vega, Driscoll's, KitchenIQ, and others. Not to mention, Tess is a dear friend of Dr. Robin's and an expert at celebrating everyone she meets. Memorable Quotes: “So, I think another way of framing self-esteem and self-belief and faith is this: celebrating yourself. And I think that there's this misconception that if you do that, you're a narcissist or you're egotistical or you're into yourself. Well, yeah, be into yourself.” “The dictionary says well-being equals happiness. In my definition of wellbeing, after being in the space for 40 years, is when your mind, body, and spirit don't get in your way of living.” “When you can't give a full-throated, complete, energetic yes to somebody, you're actually doing everyone a favor by taking your ‘yes' off the table with that person or that organization or that job or whatever, because then it allows the energy to shift and then to get the full-throated yes from somebody who's really able to give it.” “That's a really important way of celebrating others is not being distracted by other things and being completely present in the moment with that person.” What You'll Learn: The various ways to celebrate big wins and everyday small wins in your life and the lives of those around you. This Episode Includes: Tess learned how to celebrate people in her life by watching her parents demonstrate that behavior when she was a child. When you meet someone new try to learn and remember their name. Life is like a seesaw and you have to find your balance somewhere in the middle. One way to frame self-esteem and self-belief is by celebrating yourself. Celebrating oneself doesn't have to be egotistical when it's done from the posture of filling your cup so you can give back to the world. Speak to your limiting beliefs and practice positive self-talk. Do something nice for yourself each day. Create one-on-one relationships and connect with those people on a regular basis. Accept compliments without qualifiers. Nourish and celebrate your body by taking care of it with a healthy lifestyle. You can celebrate someone by connecting them to another person who will greatly impact their life. Be discerning about the kind of people you surround yourself with and the energy they emanate. When you live from a place of gratitude and abundance time is your best friend, when you live from a place of depletion, time is your greatest enemy. When you learn how to celebrate yourself and others you elevate the world. Three Takeaways From Today's Episode: Be a mindful, global citizen. Expand and endorse. Think about who you could endorse that can help expand their network. Let your energy be infectious. GOT DREAMS?! Still can’t stop thinking about rubbish. I’ve been thinking heaps about plastic in particular, cause that’s what the most scary rubbish is made of and everything. Plastic in the sea is so gnarly because it must look SO DELICIOUS to marine animals. Think about it. All squidgy, brightly coloured... balloons must look like lollies to turtles. Delicious looking, deadly underwater lollies. Which brings me to also ask what do you think about fake meat burgers and snags and general barbecue fodder? Something about it all feels a little bit suss to me? Anyway enjoy this extremely important broadcast. And if you rate/review/subscribe/share/blaaaaaaah blah blah, you’ll be doing someone a massive favour. (If it the favour for someone doesn’t end up being for the person you share it with, it’ll be for me. So it’ll hopefully be 2 favours in 1, which is mad for your karma and stuff, ok cheers) HEAVY VID ——> https://www.instagram.com/p/CK5qqxnjslt/?igshid=1o4w6pvazrdka

You’ve heard the old adage: Humans plan, and God laughs. That truism could nicely describe Irina Gerry’s life, which has been pretty remarkable so far. She started out growing up in communist Russia, but with fate helping to defy odds, Irina ended up coming to the US and attending Harvard Business School. She eventually worked at one of the biggest symbols of capitalism on the planet: Procter & Gamble. But soon, Irina was in the dairy industry, working at milk product behemoth Danone, or sometimes known as Dannon in the United States, managing their plant-based brands Silk and So Delicious. After years of spending time advancing alt-dairy within the walls of one of the world’s biggest dairy companies, fate struck again in Irina’s life. Following a chance virtual meeting on Linkedin during the pandemic with the CEO of a brand new, pre-revenue, animal-free dairy start-up, Irina decided to leave the comfort and safety of a good job at a major company to try her hand at entrepreneurship. So she left Danone to become the Chief Marketing Officer of Change Foods, a company recently started by Australian plant-based entrepreneur David Bucca that’s using microbes to brew real dairy proteins without the use of a single cow. So far they’ve raised nearly $1 million and are seeking an additional $5 million in 2021. Change Foods has already brought on other heavy hitters from major food brands, and their first product, they claim, will be cheese that melts and performs just like conventional cheese. In this episode we discuss Irina’s journey from corporate Goliath to start-up David, just what makes Change Foods different from other precision fermentation start-ups, and what Irina thinks are examples of great—and not-so-great—marketing in the plant-based space. We also get into why plant-based milk has become so much more successful than plant-based meat, at least so far. And we discuss the vexing question: is real dairy brewed from microbes vegan or not? After all, it’s real dairy protein, so if you’re allergic to cow’s milk, you’ll be allergic to this. But no animals were used, so how should marketers describe this kind of food? So enjoy learning about the brave new world of sustainable protein and a remarkable life journey so far in this episode! Discussed in this interview: Our past episode featuring Perfect Day’s co-founders. Forks Over Knives had a big impact on Irina. Irina recommends The Tipping Point by Malcomb Gladwell. Paul’s article on how cheese consumption is increasing even while milk consumption is declining. The RethinkX Report on the future of animal agriculture. Irina praised companies like Impossible Foods, Beyond Meat, and Miyoko’s. She also questioned Lightlife Foods for its ads attacking fellow plant-based companies.

Cindy Levine shares what projects that keep her busy during the winter months and time during the quarantine. We talk about our healthy addiction of paddle boarding, the importance of getting outside and experiences of teaching yoga. Our dogs also share their voice in the background. Veggie Lasagna One jar marinara sauce ( I use Trader Joe's Tomato Basil Marinara) about 25 oz 2 whole carrots 2 handfuls of Broccoli florets 1 handful of spinach 1 bag (two cups) grated mozzarella (So Delicious has a great dairy free one) 2 containers of ricotta (Tofutti makes a vegan one) 2 eggs (or egg replacer/flax “eggs”) 1 tsp. Italian seasoning 6 oz. shredded Parmesan cheese (Violife makes a great vegan one!) 1 box of No boil noodles Steam carrots and broccoli until soft Reserve the liquid you cook them in (for the noodles.) Blend carrots and broccoli with marinara sauce in a cuisinart or blender. (It will resemble a “meaty sauce.” Follow directions on no boil noodles and add the extra water from the steamed veggies. Usually it's 1/2 cup water/milk for every five noodles. Blend ricotta, eggs, spinach and Italian seasoning together in a bowl and set aside. In a 9x13 glass casserole, spread one cup of the prepared marinara over the bottom. Top with one layer of noodles. Spread 1/2 of the ricotta cheese mixture over noodles, then one cup of the marinara, and sprinkle one third of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top. Repeat # 6 Top with the last layer of noodles, remaining marinara sauce. Sprinkle the top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Cover with parchment, then foil. (If the foil comes in contact with tomato sauce, it will break down the aluminum and you don't want that in your lasagna!) Bake covered at 350 for 45 minutes. Bake uncovered for another 15 minutes. Let rest 15 minutes. Enjoy! I’m SO excited for you to hear this week's episode because your gut is one of the MOST IMPORTANT aspects when it comes to your health (if not THE most important)! Your gut is responsible for absorbing nutrients which helps you make the hormones you need AND break down and eliminate the ones you don’t. It has its organisms/bacteria that add up to MORE than the amount of cells in our body!! Those organisms influence our mood, weight, inflammation & overall hormonal health. Your gut is responsible for moving hormones out of the body and helping you detoxify. When your gut isn’t functioning properly, you can experience anxiety, depression, headaches, joint pain, fatigue, difficulty gaining or losing weight and hormone imbalances. You need a healthy gut to remove excess estrogen and other waste from the body. Estrogen is moved out of the body through the bowels so when your gut function is compromised estrogen goes back into circulation in your body which leads to those excess estrogen symptoms of bloating, cramping, heavy periods, irritability a.k.a. PMS. You need to poop at least once a day to remove the excess estrogen your body no longer needs so if you’re constipated, you’re most likely suffering from estrogen excess. Birth control pill disrupts normal flora and produces an environment that allows for overgrowth of harmful bacteria and yeast. Leaky gut leads to widespread inflammation and hormone disruption throughout the body. We could get a leaky gut when the cells of our intestinal lining are compromised a.k.a. little holes that are food particles go through and into the bloodstream. This is caused by stress, medications, eating foods you’re sensitive to, birth control, gluten, low fiber diet, pesticides, high sugar diet & more. When you have leaky gut, toxins, microbes, and undigested food particles make their way through your intestinal lining & it sets off your immune system because your immune system doesn’t recognize them so it starts defending them. This results in an inflammatory attack by your immune system. Leaky gut leads to food sensitivities and immune disorders like autoimmune disease. This inflammation from an imbalanced gut flora leads to insulin receptor dysfunction and higher levels of testosterone which is of course root causes of PCOS. (Beyond the Pill) TANGIBLE TIPS: Add in FIBER to every meal. Fiber is ONLY IN PLANT FOODS. (start with a salad- make veggies the largest thing on each plate). Fiber grabs onto excess hormones, toxins & cholesterol & helps eliminate it out of the body. Add in Omega3 FATS daily- if not in every meal. Omega 3s= avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil. Omega 3s are ANTI INFLAMMATORY & NOURISH the gut. MOVEMENT. Movement INCREASES the DIVERSITY in our gut! Take the stairs, get up at least once an hour, park in the furthest parking spot, dance around, pick a movement you love. REMOVE/REDUCE: Sugar, processed foods, dairy. Do this ONE AT A TIME! Look at your diet & see what you consume the most of out of the list above. Start with what you consume most and remove/reduce ONE thing at a time until it becomes a habit to NOT have it. Then add another. The Investigation As a clinical nutritionist, many people email me asking me what I eat to stay healthy. They want to know how I stay gluten and dairy-free without falling off the wagon and how I keep things interesting with meal ideas plus all about which supplements I take. I’ve gone through my share of health challenges (and had a health mystery or two as well) and had to get to the root of my problems to regain my health. My diet has been a big part of what put me on the path to where I am today which is being able to thrive after all those struggles. So, in this week’s episode, I’m revealing some of the things I eat as well as some foods and brands I have found that can make eating a clean diet delicious and fun. I guess you could say I’m flipping the investigation around to me. Starting My Day One of the things I try to do each day is a short, intermittent fast. So, I usually don’t have food in the morning until 12 hours has passed since I ate the night before. One of my favorite ways to start my day is a peach smoothie (see recipe below) that includes Whole Body Collagen, and maybe a gluten-free Paleo Waffle from Birch Benders with some almond butter. My son Jake loves oatmeal muffins (see recipe below) in the morning and sometimes I’ll enjoy one or two myself. When I do, I like to add some fat and protein to make sure to balance my blood sugar. This might be a collagen protein drink with flavoured protein by Paleo Pro or Pea protein. On other days, I might make protein pancakes (see recipe below), some eggs with veggies or baked sweet potato slices. Lunch Time (on a Tight Timeline) My lunches tend to be quick. A lot of time I have a salad (I cut up the veggies ahead of time). I usually include a protein like chicken, turkey, shrimp, or salmon (make sure they’re clean and don’t contain nitrates). I also like to include a carb like lentils, black beans or kidney beans that I’ve made in the Instapot ahead of time once a week. You can use canned beans (make sure they are BPA free cans) but the pressure cooker destroys lectins (those can be an issue for those who have autoimmune diseases) so that is why I love using the pressure cooker. If you have to buy canned beans, Eden Foods actually pressure-cooks their beans before canning them so you get the lectin-reduced benefit with them. Sometimes, I’ll do a sweet potato for the carb or I also like the Siete Tortillas which come in a variety of flavors and are actually grain-free. They have ones made with cassava flour, almond flour, cashew flour and chickpeas, very yummy! Simple Kneads Bread is also a very tasty gluten free bread option (they’re also yeast free) that is clean and delicious. It does contain grains but if you are ok with grains, its one of the best gluten free breads that I have found recently. Snack Time I like coconut yogurt because it’s dairy free and I like the So Delicious brand, specifically the unsweetened vanilla which I mix with some Paleonola Granola. Or, I might do fruit and nuts, hummus and veggies, or a protein drink similar to my breakfast smoothie. Dinner I like to balance my plate with a protein, a veggie and a starch. An example is to have baked chicken (I do the whole chicken early in the week so I have chicken for lunch the next day) or add a homemade BBQ sauce (see recipe below). Another favorite in our house is tacos. We saute grass-fed beef or turkey and we love to use the Seite tacos (they have hard and soft shells) because they’re super clean. We load up the tacos with veggies. We also like to grill wild-caught shrimp and put it over zucchini noodles in a vegan pesto sauce from Gotham. Or, we might have beef stew, turkey thighs or burgers with veggies. What I Drink A lot of people want to know about my water. I don’t recommend tap water. We have filtered water but because we are on a well and the house didn’t have good filtration before we moved in, I worry about what is in the pipes and so we actually subscribe to Mountain Valley Springs which is a water service that delivers clean water in glass jugs. Its a great option if you are looking for delivery and trying to avoid plastic bottles which I really recommend. For others, I recommend a 7-stage reverse osmosis water filter if you are able to install it under your sink. If you live in an apartment or are not able to install under the sink, a great counter top option for reverse osmosis is AquaTru. My Supplements Regimen Over the years, I have taken a variety of supplements based on what my tests indicated I needed. My supplement regimen is always changing (and it did while I was pregnant for sure). Most of the time, I take fish oils - specifically, OmegAvail Ultra from Designs for Health and I also take two krill oil gel caps called XanthOmega from Designs for Health. Whenever I do a hair test, I am always low on magnesium so I also take the Magnesium Buffered Chelate from Designs for Health. Lately, I’ve also been taking a lot of extra vitamin C and I rotate between the Stellar C and the C+ BioFizz (both from Designs for Health) to support my immune system as well as Zinc a couple of times a week. At bedtime (well away from when I take my other vitamins), I also take some Tocotrienols and Glutathione to balance my immune system (which is important for me because I have Hashimoto’s). In addition, I take a vitamin D (dose depends on my lab tests), probiotics (I rotate between the Ortho 100, Ortho-Biotic, and ProBioMed. And finally, I take pancreatic enzymes and Betaine when I have a meal that's a little bit bigger or contains a little more animal protein. Final Thoughts I hope this episode helps you discover some new food choices and motivates you to adopt or keep up a clean diet. By the way, I don’t have affiliations with any of these brands. I discovered them in my health food store or I learned about them through clients who love them and so just wanted to share. Food is so connected to the human experience—it absolutely needs to be a joyous thing. –Tess Masters I have lost 20 pounds in the past 55 days!!! And I have our amazing guest to thank. I feel the best I have felt in my 40s! This is a must-listen if you want to get healthy now, which might just be the most important goal we can all have in 2020... In this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m really excited to talk with Tess Masters, the Blender Girl, about clean eating—and why it matters. Getting to a better place with our own eating can feel kind of daunting. It’s something we know we “should” do, but getting really clear on our own why and the real benefits can certainly help us make a real change. Tess and I talk about those benefits. Additional energy is a big one. I know I felt the change and Tess reports how much the people she works with comment on sleeping better, having more energy with their kids or partners or for the things they love to do, not feeling exhausted. Beyond energy, their digestion is better, their gut health is better. Plus your skin glows, your hair is more lustrous, you feel good in your body and often that shows up as more confidence and a sense that you can achieve your goals. Given all that, why don’t people make the change? It’s not easy, but it helps to start from a place of abundance. So often when we shift to healthy eating we focus on what we can’t have. What if instead celebrate what you can have? Tess helps people find foods that satisfy their cravings in a way that truly nourishes them. We talk about: Getting over the beginning hump and how your body wants to stick with these changes that feel good if you can stick out the beginning How a 90-day focus gives you time to let go of previous habits or practices that aren’t serving you and shifting to new ones How “falling off the wagon” can actually be helpful because it reminds your body how the things you used to eat or drink made you feel Using your choices as data points about yourself, how you respond to food, your emotional trigger points, etc. Adapting foods you love to be healthier (and getting more comfortable in the kitchen) Tracking your food, sleep, and movement BIO Tess Masters is a lifestyle personality and author of The Blender Girl, The Blender Girl Smoothies, and The Perfect Blend. She lives in Los Angeles. LINKS Join me in the Skinny60 » Download 20 Skinny60 Recipes » Theblendergirl.com An earlier conversation with Tess on the Plan Simple Podcast Doable Changes from this episode: NOTICE HOW YOU FEEL. Start noticing how different foods make you feel. Write it down. Do you feel tired or bloated after eating something? Do you feel regret or comfort? What do you crave? Start paying attention and noticing. This is all data that can help you shift to healthier eating. CHANGE THE COMPOSITION OF YOUR PLATE. Use the 80–20 rule. That means 80% of your plate should be non starchy vegetables and 20% of your plate should be a mix of starch and animal or plant protein. If that feels like a huge switch (maybe your plate is currently reversed), try shifting close, like 50–50. Try experimenting with different vegetables to fit that part of your plate. FOCUS ON HYDRATION. Drink more water-based beverages throughout the day. Pack a water bottle when you go out. Bring a container of water to your desk. Track how much you are drinking. If you want to snack, try having a drink first. Think about ways to make water more appealing—a glass you love, adding fruit or herbs. And don’t forget about high-water content foods—include them with each meal.

Sometimes when you’re building a creative business, you might not desire to build a massive company. You might instead want to take on larger projects and bigger clients. There is no right or wrong way to grow your business. Today I had the pleasure of chatting with a friend of mine, Adam Vicarel. Adam is a graphic designer and artist who has worked with big brands including Sharpie and So Delicious. Sean says YES. What to do when those limiting belief/ negative thoughts come up. How to know when to pivot? When to use grit/push through and when to change plans?>Don’t make it about YOU.Try your hardest not to make decisions in a valley. How to help a friend through their own valley? Sean’s advice: Don’t help unless they specifically ask for it. “Everyone is in a different place in their journey”When you’re in a valley — that despair — when you learn a lot about yourselves. Your survival rate for your bad days is 100%“People just want to be listened to”. Your brain has a tendency to follow your feelings. Your brain will go through withdrawal when you are trying to make a change in your life. Negative thoughts will always come. You have to consciously redirect your thoughts. CHILL. You have to get to the root cause — understand the way you feel about yourself and the negative core beliefs you have. How to be responsible for a life situation you don't have control of — and that you don't necessarily love.“To me” consciousness. Victim consciousness. Choosing to respond in a negative way. “For me/by me” consciousness. How is this working for me? EVERY negative thing that happens to you has good in it.“Where you choose to focus your attention is what dictates how you feel about it” LOOK FOR THE POSITIVES> Shift your attention. your attention changes and your realities change. We can all make that choice. We know eating local is better, but it’s not always easy. We’re left wondering if we should head to the farmers market, join a CSA, or just seek out local foods at the grocery store? There are often more questions than answers, which is why we could not have been more excited to have Wen-Jay Ying, the founder of Local Roots and local foods enthusiast, on the mindbodygreen podcast. She talks about why she became passionate about creating access to local food and how you can incorporate more local foods into your diet right away. One of the best ways to experiment with local foods is through community-supported agriculture or CSA, said Wen-Jay. A traditional CSA model usually requires a 6-month commitment where the consumer picks up local vegetables at a specific location from local farmers. We discuss the pros and cons of joining a traditional CSA model, and as well as the ins and outs of Local Roots, an alternative CSA model, which offers delivery or pick-up options, a variety of vegetables, and the option to pay by season, week, or day. No matter which model you opt for, Wen-Jay says her favorite part of being in a CSA is the community that surrounds local foods: the people, farmers, and culture. When eating locally, however, you can run the risk of getting bored with eating the same veggie that’s in season, explains, Wen-Jay. What do you do with a week’s worth of beets? Here are Wen-Jay’s tips for getting creative regardless of the ingredients you have. Enjoy this episode, sponsored by SO Delicious! alternatives to dairy this is a short post on alternatives to dairy. we give our top recommendations. check out the post asssociated with this episode. we have links and resources to everything we discuss including a downloadable "self-testing" handout. subscribe to our podcast on Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher | Overcast | Google Play we love full-fat dairy. it is concentrated nutrient density at its best. it's full of fat-soluble nutrients, healthy fats, and other bio-available nutrients. it is healthful and ancestral. we also believe in going without dairy for some time, just like we'd recommend going without other foods for some time. what might be problematic about dairy? insulinogenic. for some people (not all) dairy can spike blood sugar and keep it there for extended periods of time. lactose intolerance. some people may not have the capacity to digest lactose, which means it would be available for other bacteria in our system and would usually create uncomfortable symptoms such as stomach upset, gas, diarrhea, bloating, and maybe even nausea. casein and whey sensitivity. these are proteins found in milk that a small percentage of the population may be sensitive to. by small we're talking less than 5% of adults. to determine if dairy resonates with you. . . remove all dairy for at least 2 weeks, ideally 1 month. this will give your body a chance to clean itself out and re-sensitize it to potentially problematic nutrients. then, re-introduce dairy foods individually, with self-awareness paying attention to how you look, feel, and perform immediately after consuming and for a few days after. you can even us self-testing protocols such as The Pulse Test. you can download our self-testing protocols here. the main things we may want alternatives to. . . butter cream for coffee and/or tea ice cream? there is no alternative to cheese. unfortuneately. butter alternatives. most of us use butter religiously for everything. butter is extremely healthful. butter is made from churning cream until the fat coagulates together, which removes most of the lactose and milk proteins. it tends to be the least problematic of all the dairy foods because it is almost nothing but fat. however, there are very small amounts of milk solids which means that someone very sensitive to butter may notice a reaction. to find out for sure, we definitely want to remove butter for 2 to 4 weeks. clarified butter is butter that has been melted, the water evaporated, and the milk solids removed. clarified butter is dairy free. ghee is clarified butter, but with a little flavor. it's been cooked a little longer, and so the milk solids burn and give a flavor, before the milk solids are removed. ghee may also be flavored in traditional ways. it's difficult to find clarified butter. most options are going to be ghee. look for grass-fed and organic. our favorite is this brand here. the most cost-effective that we've found on Amazon is this one. heavy cream alternatives. heavy cream is the fat skimmed off of milk before homogenization. it tends to be about 36%+ in milk fat, and low in lactose and milk solids. it is not so low, however, that someone with dairy sensitivity wouldn't react to it. our top cream alternatives are pristine and pure, with minimal ingredients. the fewer ingredients the better. the more the ingredients, emulsifiers, and stabilizers, even if they are approved, the more we're moving in the wrong direction. we'll give our best recommendations below. as time changes, these recommendations may need to change. just make sure you're always looking for minimal approved ingredients. coconut milk is a great option. it is grated coconut with water. it has a high fat content with a large percentage being medium-chain triglycerides, which are easy for the body to digest and use for energy. when looking for coconut milk, look for minimal ingredients. most canned coconut milk will have guar gum or another gum as a thickener, stabilizer, or emulsifier. these gums are fine. all things being equal, however, a product without them would be optimal. popular canned coconut milks would be Thai Kitchen and Native Forest Simple (has no gums). coconut cream comes from the fat of coconut milk. this is our top recommendation. we love this product from Aroy-D. the only ingredient is coconut cream. coconut cream is the fat that separates from coconut milk. other creamer alternatives. not optimal but fine. Better Half coconut almond milk creamer. ingredients: almond milk (water, almonds), coconut cream, natural flavors, calcium carbonate, sunflower lecithin, sea salt, potassium citrate, locust bean gum, gellan gum. Nut Pods creamer. ingredients: purified water, coconut cream, almonds, acacia gum, dipotassium phosphate, sunflower lecithin, sea salt, gellan gum. So Delicious coconut milk coffee creamer. it has sugar!!! which is fine but not optimal! check out our post here. ingredients: coconut milk, dried cane syrup, calcium phosphate, pea protein, xantham gum. ice cream alternatives. Coconut Bliss. the real deal with sugar! always check the ingredients! check out all their flavors here. Halo Top non-dairy. low in sugar, uses sugar alcohols and stevia. check out all their flavors here. So Delicious frozen desserts. low in sugar! check out their flavors here.
South Bronx native Majora Carter, is an urban revitalization consultant and real estate developer. Around the age of seven, she saw her neighborhood beginning to change, and her home and its surrounding neighborhoods featured on the news for being crime-ridden places. Majora joined me on the mbgpodcast to talk about the life events and realizations that led her back to the Bronx after she tried, like many others, to leave. She faced a crossroads after graduating from NYU: She could either pursue her passion for screenplays or help her community become a place that people wanted to stay in. While her choice to serve her community was a path with more questions than answers, she said, “This is what I’ve been made to do.” From working to create a more sustainable solid waste management plan for the South Bronx to building the award-winning Hunts Point Riverside Park and opening the Boogie Down Grind Café, Majora Carter has transformed her community and inspired countless others to help. There were times of serious resistance from some groups and times when others jumped in to help wholeheartedly, she explained. The thing that kept her going? An unwavering belief that the place where she grew up had value—the environment and its people. She’s led by example, and since making sustainable changes such as the park on the river, she’s inspired more young entrepreneurs to stay and open up their businesses in the South Bronx. While the community isn’t “fixed” and there is always more to be done, the substantial improvements the South Bronx have seen act as a model for other impoverished communities. Majora is working on transferring these lessons to other areas that are faced with gentrification and the sinking feeling of having no value. Her incredible expertise in urban revitalization and commitment to building under-appreciated communities from the ground up is absolutely inspiring. You’ll be left with actionable steps you can take to support your own community and overwhelming gratitude for hometown champions like Majora.Enjoy this episode, sponsored by SO Delicious! To continue with our Podcast Showcase Series, we have an episode from Katie Jones from the Food Heroes Podcast. In this episode, she interviews a cool startup in the UK, a company that makes beer out of old bread. Katie Jones popped out of the scene last year when LinkedIn had this weird power of getting individuals to talk more. I was fortunate to ride the wave of this, and so did Katie. Katie has a very interesting story. You can actually listen to it on her podcast. I believe it’s episode 20. It’s a really good episode and you learn a ton about Katie’s background. Also, I get a shoutout on this episode, if you’re interested in seeing the inception of this, I’ve posted it on the show notes. So Kate is also an expert in plant-based foods such as vegan ice cream and vegan cheese. This is because of her experience at So Delicious, a very popular vegan ice cream company. Katie, who is inherently entrepreneurial, stayed in the company for 6 years building the company and creating vegan products and creating systems to execute these vegan products. After being laid off at So Delicious through an acquisition, she took time to find herself. How did she do this? Well, she took her dog and her RV and traveled around the United States. Through her RV journey, she really explored herself. Around that time, she researched Copywriting and jumped into it. After a few months of writing, she decided to well, start a podcast! Her fascination with B-Corp spurred the development in podcasting and with 20 episodes, Katie has had some amazing guests who are doing good work in the food system we live in. Many of her episodes focus on things such as food waste, or ethical sourcing of unique ingredients like saffron or eggs. If you’re into hearing the stories of the people who are making the world just a little bit better, this is the podcast for you. Welcome to our Tuesday Q&A! Before we get to the questions, we want to share our favorite tips for becoming healthier, happier, AND hotter. Listen now [bitly]! • Do something you love every single day. Dancing, singing, painting, spending time with loved ones, cooking--whatever your passion, carve out time in your day to experience something that brings you joy. Even devoting just five minutes to your passions will leave you feeling more uplifted all day and that joy will extend into all areas of your life. • • Choose Happiness. Happiness doesn’t come from external things (new car, promotion, marriage, baby, etc.) it comes from within. Your happiness is a choice. And the way into that happiness is gratitude. Check out the book Believing in Myself by Earnie Larsen. • Eat high vibe energizing food. No, we’re not talking about caffeine. ;) Most of us are stuck in a junk-food cycle. We eat foods that make us feel sluggish. We opt for sugar and coffee to perk ourselves up, which only leaves us feeling more tired. Break the cycle and focus on high vibe energizing foods instead. Think: a banana with a spoonful of nut butter, veggies dipped in tahini dressing, avocado and aminos, fruit or vegetable smoothies, raw soups, green powders, maca, chia seeds, cacao…. • Forgive and be grateful. If you hold onto anger or judgement against another person, or yourself, it only hurts you. Holding onto anger is like holding a hot coal. If you want to be free and experience true happiness, you must forgive and release that negative emotion. You can choose to be a loving human being to yourself and to others. The way to get there is through gratitude. Now let’s dig into this week’s questions! Question 1: What’s the best way to tone and lift a saggy butt? We reached out to Ella Magers for her secrets to a toned and tight booty. There is no one-size-fits-all perfect butt: a sexy booty is the healthiest fittest version of your own. To achieve that, you’re going to need to clean up your diet and do some targeted exercises. Squats and lunges are your best friends. Depending on your specific goals, you’ll either need to do more reps (to tone up) or add some weights (to build and firm). If you want an awesome work out for your booty, then check out the Brazil Butt Lift Workout! Question 2: What are your thoughts on plant milks and which do you recommend? To answer this question in depth we asked Eco Vegan Gal Whitney Lauritsen, our go-to-girl for the latest in vegan research and taste-testing. We love plant milks and have probably tried all of them, but here are some of our favs: Oatly oat milk (we’re a bit obsessed with this one, it’s super creamy!) and So Delicious coconut milk are perfect if you have a nut sensitivity because they’re nut free. If you don’t have an issue with nuts, then Milkadamia macadamia nut milk Califia Farms almond milk, Forager cashew milk, and Rice Dream rice milk are all delicious. You can make milk from most nuts and grains (like quinoa, hazelnuts, flax seeds, hemp seeds, etc.) so experiment to find your favorite. Whatever brand you go for, make sure you check the ingredients—some brands are more processed than others. Question 3: How flexible is JJ Flizane’s Invisible Fitness Course and what’s included? JJ’s five-month transformation course, Invisible Fitness, is a self-paced online program. When you sign up, you decide when you want to start. You get a 30-minute coaching call with JJ every month where you can get support with whatever you need. These coaching calls can be grouped together to fit your unique needs. You also get personal attention from JJ via her Invisible Fitness Academy, where you’ll find a supportive community and accountability partners. The course is flexible and customizable! You can get in touch with JJ at info@invisiblefitness.com for more information. If you want to reach your fitness and wellness goals, and be the healthiest, happiest and hottest version of yourself, then JJ’s course is perfect for you—but hurry because there are only 2 weeks left to enroll! Click here to get all the details about the course, plus fabulous bonuses! Natural Tooth Powder Recipe The most important thing you can do for your teeth and mouth is to move away from conventional toothpaste brands, as they contain ingredients that are known to disrupt hormones and irritate gums. Instead, make your own mouth-and-tooth-friendly natural products. This is Suzy’s new and improved tooth powder recipe: • 1/2 cup baking soda (neutralizes the acids in your mouth, makes your mouth alkaline, which means bacteria can’t grow there) • 3 tbsp calcium carbonate powder (for healing receding gums) • 1/8 cup Himalayan salt, milled very fine (for tightening gums) • 10-20 drops therapeutic grade essential oil (peppermint, spearmint, lemon, clove, you can blend these to suit you) Optional: • You can also add 1 tbsp dried herbs like mint, sage, parsley, lavender – get experimental and add an earthy vibe to your toothpaste! • For a little sweetness, add Xylitol, which is antimicrobial and great for your teeth If you have gum recession, get some comfrey root, make tea from it, and use it as a mouthwash—it will help regrow your gums. You can also get calcium ascorbate powder, which is vitamin C buffered with calcium. A little bit applied to your gums will bring them back to health. If you don’t have time to make your own natural toothpaste, try Ecodent. Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU! The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Tess Masters My sister and I grew up with wild and wonderful parents, both airline crew and relentless adventurers. We lived and traveled all over the world, and tucked into any and all foods put in front of us. Until I hit my teens, when I was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus. That was the impetus to a revolution of my diet. A naturopath suggested I forget gluten, dairy and meat, and embrace a diet high in plant-based foods and fish. Almost overnight, I felt better. It turned out I was gluten and dairy intolerant. This was my awakening to food as medicine. I developed a keen interest in health and nutrition. I studied nutritional science, and began taking cooking classes to develop my skills and knowledge. Only in my early twenties did I truly become inspired by the power of whole foods. My friend, Toni Hudson from Kerekt Living had been married to Dirk Benedict who had overcomer prostate cancer by following a macrobiotic diet. His book, Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy inspired me. The power of whole foods Finding macrobiotics worked for me. I did feel good. But, in sticking with it religiously for many years, I still didn't feel as good as I knew I could. I embarked on a journey of discovery, searching for the perfect whole-foods diet to keep myself in a state of optimum health. As a perfectionist, I was going to master the art of my own health even if it killed me! My self-imposed and largely self directed crusade had me trying out every whole-foods diet known to man. I became vegetarian, then vegan. I discovered the benefits of raw foods, and dabbled in Ayurvedic philosophy, and Chinese yin and yang principles. Next, on to alkalinity, then Body Ecology anti-candida principles, blood-group strategies, and zillions of green smoothies. It was exhausting. While all of these regimes had something to offer, none was one-size-fits-me. I would feel really good, but eventually, symptoms of lethargy and fatigue, so familiar from my early experience of Epstein-Barr, would set back in. When I embraced the concept of bio-individuality—the recognition that one blanket strategy won’t work for everybody—things shifted. I supplemented by knowledge with an intuitive-experiential approach, listening to the signs in my body, and teaching myself a healthier way to move through the world. I discovered that flexibility and fluidity, not rigidity, were for me keys to wellness. Finding the “Tess” diet Today I cherry-pick from all of the healthy diets I’ve tried, working successful practices into my immune-boosting Tess diet. This diet adapts in response to climate, stress, emotions, physical activity, and specific health questions that arise. I’m a seasonal eater. In the hotter months, I eat a high percentage of raw foods; when it’s cold, more cooked foods. But green alkaline smoothies, juices, and soups are year-round staples. Birth of The Blender Girl With those staples as a focus, I started this website, using the blender as my inspiration. I quickly saw blending not only as a method of food preparation, but also as a guiding metaphor for how I live. Combining different concepts, flavors, and philosophies plays a crucial part in my ideal balance of food, exercise, work, and fun. While my approach isn’t a system exactly, it does add up to a recipe for success and happiness, and one that I believe is worth sharing. A diet featuring ample quantities and varieties of leafy greens, alkaline vegetables, and raw sprouted nuts, seeds, and grains, combined with daily green juices and smoothies, can be beneficial to just about anyone. In addition to this, each of us will discover that individualized, perfect blend of joyful activities, fulfilling work, loving relationships, time with family, food, exercise, and more. With all this in mind, my recipes aim for versatility and simplicity. The Recipes All of my recipes are gluten-free and vegan. Whilst I'm a plant based eater, and am convinced that a diet containing vast quantities and varieties of leafy greens, alkaline vegetables, raw sprouted nuts and seeds, all combined with daily green juices and smoothies can be beneficial to anybody, I also believe that each person’s "perfect blend" (foods, exercise, joyful activities, fulfilling work, loving relationships, time with family, etc.) will add up to a unique combination, and so the ingredients each of us will put into the blender will also be a unique blend. We nourish our beings with many things, and so it only makes sense that we nourish our bodies in diverse ways, too. So, I ask you, “What’s your perfect blend?” Main Bio Tess Masters is an actor, cook, lifestyle personality, and author of The Blender Girl, The Perfect Blend, The Detox Dynamo Cleanse, and The Blender Girl Smoothies app and book. Novinka Fear and Saturday Night písničkáře s hlasem chraplavějším než má Tom Waits je mimořádně povedená. Třetím recenzovaným albem je sólovka Rhiannon Giddens, zpěvačky jedinečného string bandu Carolina Chocolate Drops.
