Last Friday, This is My Silver Lining lost a dear friend. Kevin Sousa lost his battle with skin cancer, which had suddenly and aggressively metastasized to his brain. He passed away in his beloved Hermosa Beach, California, with his wife Patti by his side. Kevin was a kind soul with an unshakeable effervescence for life. By day, he worked as a psychotherapist, counselor, and mentor, taking the hard-fought battles and lessons he learned from his own journey through substance addiction to help others. Kevin served as the Program and Clinical Director for the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation. This non-profit organization is at the forefront of providing those suffering from mental and physical illness, injury, and disabilities with life-changing Ocean Therapy. By night, Kevin delighted crowded audiences as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist in his eponymously named rock n roll band. When Kathleen and I first spoke to Kevin, we were intrigued to learn more about ocean therapy. Thanks to his generosity of spirit and time, we came away from the conversation, having learned so much more. We send our deepest condolences to Kevin's wife Patti, his friends and colleagues at the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, and all those who loved and admired him. Show Notes: [2:50] - Surf therapy is one therapeutic tool among many. There are many properties in the ocean that impact our bodies. [4:13] - This mode of therapy is particularly beneficial for children with sensory processing difficulties. [4:50] - The movement of the ocean brings on a sense of body awareness and activates different body systems. [6:27] - Surf therapy helps with emotional regulation, but going into the water can initially be scary. [8:03] - Naomi lists some of the skills integrated into surf therapy, including balance, visual development, and core strength. [9:54] - Surf therapy also affects executive functioning skills as well as higher level cognitive functions like safety and planning. [11:24] - Surf therapy can help so many kids, but particularly those who struggle with self-regulation and sensory integration. [13:43] - The end goal is not to become a surfer. It's to have the child engage in something that is fun and playful. [14:40] - Age 6 and up into early adolescence is a great time to start this kind of therapy but it is really based upon each individual child's needs. [16:45] - There is an increasing rate of mental health issues among adolescents but research shows the benefit of physical activity on mental health, including surfing. [19:31] - Naomi shares her experience in how neurodiverse children overcome specific challenges with surf therapy. [21:48] - Currently, Naomi works with children one-on-one, but would like to expand to group therapy. [23:16] - Surfing is a very individualized sport rather than a competitive one. [24:23] - Naomi's hope is that through this mode of therapy children gain self-confidence and self-trust. About Our Guest: Naomi Matanick is a pediatric occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration therapy, surf therapy, and childhood and infant development. Kids are amazing and dynamic individuals. Yet, they have a lot to conquer. In her years of experience, she has served infants to early adolescents in a variety of areas including: sensory processing, physical and emotional regulation, organization of behavior and attention, acquisition of vital motor milestones, motor coordination development, and oral-motor therapy for feeding. Naomi's mission is for each caregiver and child to feel understood and empowered as they are equipped with life-long tools. Her passion is to see children feel joy as they playfully develop a strong identity and sense of self through the skills and knowledge they have obtained. Michael Scott Moore is a journalist and author of three books. His most celebrated book, The Desert & The Sea recounts the three years he spent captured by Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia. Once he returned to civilian life, Scott began to unpack his experience, which he writes about in his book. On this episode of The Side Woo, Moore talks about his long-time love of surfing and how it has helped him cope with PTSD in the years since he returned from Somalia. What he was interested to discover more is that Surf Therapy, or Ocean Therpay, as it is informally called, is now being used to successfully treat 1000s of veterans and abuse victims around the world. Sarah continues to unpack her own experiences with PTSD and OCD. The Michael and The Side Woo gals consider how to create a neutral framework for challenging emotions. Lovely yayborhood, I hope you're surviving the final weeks of Winter - I can't believe how fast the year is going, but I'm so excited we're inching closer to Spring! Thank you for all the lovely feedback on the past few weeks of episodes and the anonymous Q&A – I'm so glad last week's fertility and IVF episode helped some of you, wasn't Erin just an amazing woman? The adoption episode is coming to you next week, but speaking of incredible women, I've squeezed another amazing story in between this week. I heard about today's guest through her brother who happens to be our editor here at Seize the Yay – HUGE shout out to Sam Blacker at the Podcast Butler if anyone needs anything audio related – he is literally a LIFE SAVER and one of my favourite people, so it's no surprise that his sister Aimee is just as much of a legend. Aimee Blacker started out as a paediatric occupational therapist even after not actually knowing what occupational therapy was until she finished high school. She's one of those amazing examples of not really knowing where you want to end up meaning you're open-minded enough to stumble upon where you were supposed to end up all along. She is the Co-founder and Director of Surfing the Spectrum, a not-for-profit Surf Therapy initiative working to positively impact the lives of families, and their children with Autism. In anticipation of their next fundraiser this Saturday 20th August, I just had to scream from the rooftops about the transformative work she and her team are doing so I hope you are as inspired and moved as I am. Kevin Sousa is a Program Director and Ocean Therapist at the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, as well as a therapist in private practice in Hermosa Beach, California. While we initially approached Kevin to learn more about the benefits of surf therapy and the work of the JMMF, we quickly learned that Kevin had his own story to tell about his path to sobriety, being present, and the importance of enjoying the wave you're on right now. Kevin shared with us his doctoral thesis, Soul Seeking: A Crossing, where he shares his journey from alcohol abuse and addiction to sobriety through the lens of training for the Catalina Classic, an annual 32-mile paddleboard marathon from Catalina Island to Manhattan Beach, CA. Kevin's story is one of endurance, gratitude, and one of healing himself by helping others. Training for the Classic carried Kevin through the earliest and most difficult days of his path to sobriety. As a professional musician, building up his physical endurance to complete the race was only part of Kevin's journey. Unleashing new found creativity, songwriting and performing, played a significant role in Kevin's ability to confront and deal with his addictions. We learn about the history and the work of the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, one of the oldest surf therapy programs in the country, which provides surf therapy to “at-promise” youth, veterans through the Wounded Warrior battalion at Camp Pendleton, and most recently, first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic. We talk about a lot more than surfing. Kevin shares his views on meditation and how being mindful has helped him along his journey. “You can't do it wrong,” he says. Whether it's meditating, writing music, performing, surfing. . . Kevin tells us that it's all about putting yourself in situations where you have to stay engaged and stay present. Kevin's message is one we can all learn from: focus on the present. “The perfect wave is the one you're on.”Support the podcast by subscribing and reviewing!Music is considered “royalty-free” and discovered on Audio Blocks.Technical Podcast Support by: Jon Keur at Wayfare Recording Co.© 2022 Silver Linings Media LLC. Gnome Surf is doing fantastic things via surf therapy for their athletes. Listen in as Chris Antao explains what is happening.
Leanne's father took her snorkelling when she was young, and she fell in love with the ocean then. As a teenager that culture became something she pulled away from because of its associations with a traumatic experience, the details of which her brain blocked out to protect her. Even though she was drawn to the ocean, she didn't go in, and didn't understand why.Eventually Leanne decided to try surfing just once, while on a break in Mexico. She loved it, but when she got back to her home town of San Diego those associations returned. Luckily she stumbled across a surf therapy group, Groundswell Community Project, that gave her back the joy of surfing and helped her face, navigate and integrate everything she had experienced. So what happens when a pandemic hits and you are told you can't go in the ocean? In Leanne's case a form of artistic expression is released, which completely surprised her, and she has continued to embrace and develop. My guest this week is the phenomenal Kris Primacio, co-founder and CEO of the International Surf Therapy Organization (ISTO, https://intlsurftherapy.org/) Kris started surfing at 41 ,and in 10 short years metamorphosed her life into a sea-salty dream she never even knew she had. She starts her days frothing in the lineup, then peels off her wetsuit and brings that stoke to programs that heal and uplift marginalized and vulnerable people across the globe. Kris, like many women coming of age before the 2000's, grew up in a world where women surfers were non-existent, or invisible. This lack of representation goes deeper, however, for women of color. Kris, despite her Hawaiian/Filipino heritage, and surfing literally being in her blood, never imagined herself in the lineup, as she never saw anyone that looked like her on a surfboard. We talk about the extra challenges that people of color have faced with surfing - identity, proximity, economic disadvantages, and cultural judgments. Kris merges passion with purpose by connecting people of all backgrounds to the healing love and power of the ocean. Her story is a study on how to commit, how to show up, and how to live with true aloha. You won't want to miss Kris' incredible wisdom, passion, and advice on living, including my new favorite surfism, her advice to always, “Ride the wave, not the expectation.”

This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by Alex West, the founder of the Non-Profit Organization “One More Wave”. They start the show talking about the genesis of One More Wave, his “Aha!” moment while surfing that led to the initial idea, and how he used graphic design and his willingness to give his pitch to anyone that would listen to get it off of the ground. They talk about his background in the Navy, how they prepare you for civilian life afterwards in the career field, and how his time and experience contributed to One More Wave. They discuss the importance of gear in the military, how a lot of Navy Seals were obsessed with tweaking their gear, and how important a capable and functioning watch like a G-Shock is in the field. Alex and Ariel dig deeper into how surfing plays a major role in the work they do with disabled veterans through “Surf Therapy”, and how they make world-class surfboards for those veterans. They end the show talking about Alex's partnership with Ulysse-Nardin, how they co-branded a One More Wave Dive Watch for them, and how that has helped out the organization. To stay updated with all the work that One More Wave is doing, and to check out previous ABTW articles on One More Wave:- Instagram @1MWave - https://www.instagram.com/1mwave- Website - https://www.onemorewave.com/- YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/1mwave- ABTW - https://www.ablogtowatch.com/one-more-wave-at-the-end-of-the-world-with-ulysse-nardin-watches/- ABTW - https://www.ablogtowatch.com/ulysse-nardin-diver-deep-dive-one-more-wave-limited-edition-watch/To check out the ABTW Shop where you can see our products inspired by our love of Horology:- Shop ABTW - https://store.ablogtowatch.com/To keep updated with everything Superlative and aBlogtoWatch, check us out on:- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ablogtowatch/- Twitter - https://twitter.com/ABLOGTOWATCH- Website - https://www.ablogtowatch.com/If you enjoy the show please Subscribe, Rate, and Review!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In episode 6 we are joined by two great guests by way of Tim Conibear and Finisterre Ambassador Apish T - the two founding fathers of South Africa's Wave For Change. Waves for Change harnesses the power of surfing to provide psycho-social support to vulnerable children in South Africa in what is fast becoming widely recognised as Surf Therapy.Over the past decade, their evidence-based surf therapy programme has provided youth with the opportunity to have vital experiences in the sea. Working in communities affected by violence, poverty and conflict, where mental health services are often stigmatised and under-resourced, they identify, train and resource mentors, to open programmes that service the youth of their own home communities.
The talented Tasha Mentasti has made a name for herself in the surfing industry. She is currently the coach of the Paralympics South African team. She is also the founder of Surf Therapy which is an organisation where she trains people with disability to surf. Right now she stands as SA Masters Champion for Women Over 30s. Take a listen to how she came into surfing. She definitely did not think she would be doing it forever.

In my view there's no overstating the significance of surfing as the holy grail of mental health preservation. I reckon even the shittiest surf is better than no surf at all, for the simple reason of connection time. Vibing with nature, plugging into the mainframe, self-observation/sublimation/preservation, whatever you want to call it... for vitality, there's just nothing like surfing. Rob works with Waves of Wellness, a charity administering surf therapy to people with the most to gain from feeling ocean energy in their chests. Genuine stoke sessions! Conversations like these make me feel really grateful for the chance to indulge my armchair appetite for all things mental health with the thoughts of someone educated, and in action changing lives. In this episode I am blessed to meet and share space with Kris Primacio, who currently serves as the CEO of the International Surf Therapy Organisation (ISTO), a Nonprofit she co-founded in 2017 in Cape Town You are going to hear stories about sea otters, dolphins, the healing power and potential of mother ocean, about how surf therapy can both heal and unite in a common goal. You will hear Kris emotionally express how the death of her father impacted her and how she took to the water to find connection, with nature and with her loss. Kris tells us how the International Surf Therapy Organisation was formed and what the community does across the globe. We also chat about access, equity and equality in the water and why this needs to be addressed. We chat about Justin “Brick” Howze and Gage Crismon who took to social media for support after being victims of racial abuse in the water on presidents day at Manhattan beach and how the two surfers have told their story helping others know that mother ocean has a zero tolerance to Racism. Kris was able to tell me first hand about the incident I read about here in the UK, that affected her surf buddies and the whole surf community. She educates me about Bruce's beach an area of land that was created to encourage and allow black visitors and families to live and access the sea, those who created this were driven out by the KKK and the city officials condemned the neighborhood in 1924 and seized properties through eminent domain and she tells me about how the US is now having to address the Legacy of segregation in their outdoor spaces. Kris and and I also discuss the need to protect the ocean and earth and how the climate crisis is also high on the agenda for ISTO's lists of priorities I have to confess I am thinking of starting an official Kris Primacio fan club as what an honour to talk to someone who makes you feel glad you got up that day, just to be in her energy. This episode floats into us pondering belonging, acceptance and why mother ocean may grant you the invitation to visit but she does not belong to anyone.

The emotional world and the ocean realm share many parallels. San Francisco VA Psychiatrist Dr. John Straznickas, cofounder of the Veterans Surf Alliance, takes small groups of combat veterans out to ride the waves on his own time. It marks an outside-the-box and humanistic approach to treatment. Many of these vets suffer from PTS — sans D as post-traumatic stress occurs on a spectrum and the symptoms are considered a normal response to abnormal circumstances. Struggling at times with reintegration into civilian life, many of these veterans have gone from badass warriors to finding a visit to the supermarket overwhelming, and the repercussions in their personal lives can be devastating. Advice for veterans coping with PTS symptoms translates well into surf metaphors: "Don't sweat the seaweed, read the wave, the ocean is big, if you get caught in a rip current just float, avoid conflict, swim away." Many of these veterans find peace, serenity, ocean wisdom and a sense of being a part of the Surf and Ocean community, including nature's magnificent sea creatures: pods of dolphins, breaching whales, swooping pelicans, and curious seals swimming around them. The goal is to get these soldiers out on the water into the sights, sounds, feel, and smell of the ocean to ‘promote stokage' for life. Join us for a conversation between Paul and Doc Straz about how surfing and the entire Zeitgeist of the activity has a remarkable impact on combat veterans, while also helping to recharge the healthcare workers who can face burnout carrying the ‘limbic load' of so much trauma.

We are losing so much but we are also learning and growing in ways that seem long overdue and right on time. The same week in which I’m recording this introduction, Brad Turner and I did what a zillion other people did, we logged onto a Zoom call. It was a conversation that came about because Brad was and is a generous teacher and collaborator. He’s also walking around with one of the biggest hearts I’ve encountered in the world of ocean-loving humans. The particular Zoom was the latest step in a journey we’d just begun earlier this year, when we recorded this interview. On my Zoom screen were members of the Surfrider Foundation from all over the country logged on for a discussion with historian Scott Laderman author of the book Empire in Waves: A Political History of Surfing. For those of you who don’t know much about Surfrider, here is the organization’s mission statement: The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network. This conversation with Dr. Laderman was the second in an ongoing series Brad and I are organizing through our local Surfrider chapter and putting up on a YouTube channel...

Their hope is that every surfsister who opts into the programs creates their own sustainable surf practice held and supported by a community of surfsisters. We recorded this episode at the end of May which is mental health awareness month. Natalie is currently in Peru due to the Covid virus quarantine and closed borders and was generous enough to drop in to a conversation with GMN to address new and old traumas we are experiencing during this global pandemic. Natalie also connected me to Leanne Tibiatowski so that she could join the conversation as well. Leanne attended the groundswell community project to help process and heal from complicated trauma. She found it to be so healing that she bravely decided to share her story to validate and provide light and hope to others. Leanne is proof of the strong ripple effect of this program and has developed support and advocacy groups of her own that also reach women all over the world. Leanne is a local San Diegan committed to creating healthy community experiences that ignite authentic communication, self-discovery, friendship, and professional connections. She is a facilitator, speaker, and writer. Leanne is known for her ability to create safe spaces for small and large groups where truth, transformation, and connection happen. We create safe spaces where women feel free to be themselves. We recorded this in May to highlight Mental Health Awareness Month. It is apparent now, more than ever that every month and every day should be about mental health awareness. Since recording this episode, the world’s waves have kept shifting and traumatic events have compiled as we have been slowly phasing out of quarantine. This pandemic has us perfectly positioned to sit with and process images, first person stories and social viruses. The tipping point for a perfect storm. The waves may be new but the undercurrent is always there. Again… new trauma, old trauma, intergenerational trauma and cumulative trauma. Teletherapy can be considered the wild west of the therapy realm. Eric DeGrove from Blink Teletherapy Sessions breaks down how therapy looks and works via teletherapy. Eric DeGrove is the founder and president of Blink Session, a telehealth platform designed specifically for speech therapy. Blink Session's story started back in 2016 when Eric and his wife, Rikki, a speech pathologist, looked into adding teletherapy to their private practice in Colorado Springs, CO where they live. They soon learned that there were no live video platforms out there with the features therapist would need to help replicate Online, what SLPs do in person. Since Eric's background is in software development, he explored the potential of building a platform that would include features that would help SLPs do amazing therapy Online, and that is how Blink Session was born. Anyone who has surfed knows that much more goes into this activity than the ability to spot a wave and stand on a board. Not only does this sport work the entire body through extensive paddling and balance, it also requires patience and surrender. There is a team in South Africa who are doing some incredible work in the rural areas. They have created a program to educating underprivileged kids on wildlife and the effects of pollution. This is just the tip of their program. Every summer they go out and teach these kids about ocean conservation through surfing. In today’s episode we had the pleasure and honor talking to the founder of Small Steps. Jake and Jürgen talk about the impacts of surfing in the rural areas of South Africa and go deep on his journey in life and what gave his the inspiration to begin this great project. Craig has been apart of Urban Surf 4 Kids(US4K) since the summer of 2012 where he worked with the founder, Wesley Stewart, on creating a comprehensive Surf Therapy program to support Foster and At-Risk youth who are overcoming PTSD, physical, and emotional trauma. He is a full-time volunteer staff member at US4K by day and a full-time Federal Agent for Homeland Security by night. Working with the amazing kids and volunteers of this organization has been the most rewarding experience in his life. Urban Surf 4 Kids (US4K) was created to empower foster and at-risk youth through surf therapy and community service based mentoring programs. It's more than an organization, it's a family, an "Ohana." The support system that they need. Many of the foster youth in the program had never been in the ocean before despite living near the beach! US4K even takes a group of 15 to Hawaii each year! Most have never even been to an airport let alone on a dream vacation. Foster children are nearly twice as likely to suffer from PTSD as United States war veterans, according to a study conducted by The Harvard Medical School. The risk of homelessness for teens leaving foster care is extreme, as many as 25% becoming homeless within 18 months of leaving the system. Nearly one-third of boys who lived in foster care will go to jail before they reach age 19; foster girls are more than twice as likely to get pregnant as non-fostered teenagers. Additionally, 50% of all foster children will never receive a high school diploma or GED. This episode I mention the Tetris Effect Game and a view about sleep from the perspective of the digital Hatfields and McCoys. In the last episode, I talked about Surf Therapy for vets that have PTSD. Hanging ten isn’t just a great way to connect with nature. Moving your body has a bio-chemical effect on your brain. If you have an anxiety condition and also have depression as part of your experience, then you might want to add some kind of regular movement. It doesn’t have to be much, maybe taking a PE class at the local community college in something you wanted to try. I took a pottery class and I have to say it is a good way to have the opportunity to smack something around. You know what you get to do in a potter class? Pound the hell out of clay. Plus when you start throwing, shaping and spinning that will definitely take you out of the land of the digital. If you need support contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386 or text “START” to 741-741. Resources Mentioned: Dana Smith has an article on the Popular Science site on how the lack of sleep looks the same as severe anxiety in the brain. Engaget article on the Tetris Effect for Anxious and Distracted Minds 2017 New York Times article about Miwa Sada, who worked 159 hours of overtime in one month. Business Insider looks at Elon Musk remark and offers their own spin on it. There is another BI article from August 2017 that mentions 30 bad things that can happen when you are sleep deprived.
