This butterfly is excited to be speaking with Branden Barber. Branden is a lifelong environmentalist. Starting with a degree in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Cruz, he cut his teeth with Greenpeace International on the Rainbow Warrior. Then he ran the Victorian State Office for Greenpeace Australia. Over the last 25 years, he's worked in both the social profit and for-profit sectors, from start-ups to S&P 500 companies to NGO's, large and small. In the last decade, Branden has been involved with various environmental organizations as staff or as a consultant, served on the Leadership Teams at both Rainforest Action Network and Amazon Watch, and has sat on several boards – always with a focus on the environment. Branden joined the Rainforest Rescue team in 2018. He is passionate about rainforests, ardently committed to the natural world, and brings a wealth and breadth of experience to Rainforest Rescue as the CEO. Episode 25 was recorded live on stage during the first FutureSeeds event, on May 26th 2021. Mara Bun is a true legend. She has been a non-executive director of Australian Ethical for the past five years. She was the founding CEO of Green Cross Australia, an organisation set up in 1993 by Mikhail Gorbachev to create a new approach to solving the world's most pressing environmental challenges. In early 2018 it was also announced that she will become the first female President of the Australian Conservation Foundation.
 Previously, Mara has worked for The Wilderness Society, Greenpeace Australia, CHOICE, the CSIRO and a number of financial organisations, including Macquarie Bank, Morgan Stanley, and as a director of Allen Consulting Group. Mara has also worked for The World Bank on an earthquake reconstruction project in Nepal. She was a Director on the Board of Bush Heritage Australia for ten years and a member of the NSW Sustainable Energy Development Authority Advisory Council for six years. Dany is a philosopher, the director of the Multispecies Justice Project at the University of Sydney, and the author of Summertime: Reflections on a Vanishing Future (Penguin Books Australia 2021). Dany started writing Summertime in situ during the peak of the Black Summer Climate Fires that decimated Australia in 2019-20. Through her book, she attempts to honor the voices and emotions of the wild and domestic animals who experienced the Great Fires - beings, she says, who are just as terrified and bewildered by the changes occurring on Earth as we humans. In our interview, Dany bravely relives what it was like to encounter the fires, which raged for months, as she unravels and beautifully articulates some of its most valuable lessons - especially the deep love many of us feel for who and what we are losing. She begs us to see that animals are knowing individuals. And she helps us understand that human survival hinges on choosing the more difficult of two paths - the one in which we become fully responsible to the other species who live amongst us. This conversation was recorded live, in Bangalow, as the third of five live interviews as part of Resilient Byron and Renew Fest's ‘Resilience & Regeneration Roadshow' These are community forums in villages around the Byron Shire bringing people together to discuss and action how we can create resilient communities. I was so grateful to have had the chance to sit in live conversation with Richard Jones who, back in the 70s wanted to make and sell ceramics at the markets but, by his own admission “kept getting side-tracked” Those side-tracks included supporting major environmental campaigns, helping to establish Friends of the Earth Australia and Greenpeace Australia, and THEN serving in the NSW parliament for 15 years, often holding the balance of power on the cross bench and using it to negotiate to save old growth forests, create new marine parks, and protect Aboriginal rights. Some side track! Richard is an absolute joy to speak with, and you can't help but smile listening to his bubbly enthusiasm. But his quirky nature has meant that during his time in politics he was often chastised as a 'pot smoking nudist'… (I don't know about you but a pot smoking nudist seems way more relatable than most politicians we see these days!) Richard and I talk about his trips to inner space (literally, his acid trips), his reflections on politics and using his position of influence for good, and what he wants to see to create resilient communities in our local regions. Importantly, he talks about how we need to change our expectations… for example how is it that one person can own a huge block of land and do nothing with it, or expect to rent it out at a massive price? What if we use our land resources for appropriate housing or small scale agriculture, creating opportunities for agricultural jobs for young people and local food production, whilst also helping to address the issues of housing security and isolation? Richard's zest for life is infectious, and I think you'll really enjoy hearing his perspectives and reflections on life. You'll also be pleased to know that Richard now has come full circle and makes and sells ceramics at the markets, under the banner Rainforest Ceramics, with a portion of all sales going to rainforest conservation. She also sits on the boards of Australian Ethical Investments and Enova Community Energy, both highly respected and hugely impactful companies. So yeah... she knows a thing or two about good business and environmentalism. Mara graciously invited me into her home in the Gold Coast hinterland where we discussed her influences to get to where she is in life, and her outlook on the world. Is Erich Abetz trawlin' out of control? Even if not, this yarn is legit. SOME NOTES: Further contextualising Abetz in this story are his swift attacks on Greenpeace Australia and environmentalists in general, which he made almost immediately after stepping into the office of ‘Special Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation’ for the Howard Cabinet in 2006. Was it because he accurately foresaw such activists as potential impediments to his future supertrawler conspiracy with Parlevliet and Van Der Plast? I think I said on the recording that Abetz invented his role as Special Minister - THIS IS FALSE. It is true however, that he was the last to hold that office, as it was mysteriously abolished after his occupation. Could it be though, that he engineered the closure of the department in order to grant himself permanent title of ‘most recent Fisheries Minister’… whereby appointing himself as undisputed chief parliamentary advisor to any future government on all things fishing? Such circumstances would surely enable legal flexibility for any corporation with which he was associated? There are a lot of potentially nefarious loose ends about this story and nothing seems out of the question. I would like to make it abundantly clear that I'm not making any official allegations but it is in my view an inarguably compelling narrative which appears yet unresolved. www.everydaygreen.org

Gilding says we must fight-and win-what he calls The One Degree War to prevent catastrophic warming of the earth. He believes the crisis offers us a chance to replace our addiction to growth with an ethic of sustainability, and an unmatched business opportunity as old industries collapse and new companies reshape our economy. In the aftermath of the Great Disruption, we will measure "growth" not by quantity of stuff but quality of life.
