In this episode, I talk about how you can protect your cash savings from inflation. Key summary: Inflation in the developed world has increased substantially due to a variety of factors including the war in Ukraine, supply chain issues, the expansion of the money supply and the global economy emerging from COVID-19. Inflation is an insidious force which reduce the value of cash over time if you aren't careful. The value of money has fallen by c15% since the beginning of 2020. Call to action: protect your cash from inflation by depositing it in an account with the highest possible risk free interest rate. Competitive interest rates for savings accounts are currently >4.8% p.a. When depositing money in a savings account, please also consider: Is your money safe? i.e. FSCS protected. Is admin/monitoring simple? Active Savings is a good tool which I use. Deposit limits? Make sure you are eligible to receive the headline rate. Your liquidity profile? Use easy access accounts for your “rainy day” fund. Consider fixed term accounts if you want to try and lock in a “better rate for longer”. In this episode, I talk about my investment blunder - which was buying Beyond Meat shares. Key summary: In August 2020, I purchased £1000 worth of Beyond Meat Inc - a then trendy company in the plant-based meat industry which looked to be capitalising on the demographic shift in the Western World to a more environmental/ethical diet. Since investing, poor company management, industry headwinds and rising interest rates have caused the stock price to fall from $131/share (my entry point) to c.$8/share. I'm sitting on a paper loss of 93%. Whilst this has been a bitter pill to swallow, I have taken three stock picking lessons from this: Beware of confirmation bias Have a clear exit strategy Calculate a target price with discounted cashflow analysis and don't overpay Whilst buying Beyond Meat was a large error, I'm glad that it's happened early on in my career. This reduces the change of making similar errors in future with more meaningful sums of money. Link to discounted cashflow model video here. Want to get in contact with me? Welcome to "Make it Stack" with Will Waterhouse, the podcast designed to demystify the world of saving and investing for young people. In this episode, I discuss whether you should pay off your (UK) Student Loan early. Is it worth doing if you have a lump sum? Topics Discussed/Key Summary: For a graduate in their mid-twenties with £50k of student debt… Paying off the student loan early makes most sense if you have a medium/high salary of >£45k AND forecast salary growth to be above inflation over the long term. Paying off the student loan early makes least sense if you are on a low income with a poor wage growth outlook (below inflation). Deciding to pay off your student loan early is a complex decision and it hinges on long term factors which can be difficult to predict. A great deal of care should be taken before deciding to “pull the trigger” and pay it off with a lump sum. Consider the opportunity cost of any spending/investment decision. Choosing to pay off the loan early forgoes the opportunity to invest for the long run (in stocks or real estate). Depending on your individual circumstances, this may not maximise your wealth. Welcome to "Make it Stack" with Will Waterhouse, the podcast designed to demystify the world of saving and investing for young people. In this episode, I unpack financial freedom. How can this actually be achieved? Topics Discussed/Key Summary: Financial freedom can be defined as the situation where the natural yield on your invested capital is enough to sustain your desired standard of living. The amount of invested capital required for financial freedom = Desired level of annual income divided by annual yield (% p.a). There is a trade-off between yield and portfolio risk. Whilst a higher portfolio yield boosts the income your capital generates per £ invested, it is likely subject to greater risk and severe capital depreciation. The yield on your portfolio can vary with market conditions. Be flexible with your spending levels. Financial freedom is a phase in life where you are no longer trading your time for money. This is liberating as it allows you to focus on things which truly matter. Follow me on Instagram: @cayton_analytics Website: https://caytonanalytics.com/ Read my blog here! Ultimately, investors need to ensure that the return on your assets > inflation to prevent your wealth being eroded over time. Welcome to "Make it Stack" with Will Waterhouse, the podcast designed to demystify the world of saving and investing for young people. In this episode, I talk about the infamous Bear Markets over the past 100 hundred years and the impact of the S&P 500 (the US equity index). How severe were they and how long did they last? Topics Discussed/Key Summary: 1.The Wall Street Crash (1929) Max drawdown 86%. Duration 25 years. 2.The Oil Price Shock (1973) Max drawdown 48%. Duration 7 years. 3.The Dotcom Bubble (2000) Max drawdown 47%. Duration 7 years. 4.The Global Financial Crisis (2007) Max drawdown 56%. Duration 7 years. 5.COVID-19 Pandemic (2020) Max drawdown 32%. Welcome to "Make it Stack" with Will Waterhouse, the podcast designed to demystify the world of saving and investing for young people. In this episode, I talk about holding cash vs. stocks. How have they performed over the last few decades and when should you consider increasing/decreasing your allocation to each asset class? Topics discussed: Have have stocks and cash performed over the long term? Is tide turning against cash? How much cash should you hold? Key takeaways: Over the long run, stocks have massively outperformed cash as a means of saving. Cash has become significantly less attractive as a method of long term saving post global financial crisis. The trend will likely continue given the expansionary monetary policy to combat COVID-19. The longer your investment time horizon, the greater your chances of success in the stock market As a general rule of thumb, individuals should have a rainy day fund which covers 6 months' expenses. If you are looking to make a large purchase in the near future you should increase your cash weighting to mitigate downside risk. Don't sit on significant excess cash. The consequences of doing this could burn a hole in your wallet after inflation Instagram: @cayton_analytics Website: https://caytonanalytics.com/ This podcast is for educational purposes only and should not be construed as financial advice.
Welcome to Make it Stack with Will Waterhouse, the podcast designed to demystify the world of saving and investing for young people. In this episode, I talk about Defined Contribution Pensions. Topics discussed: Introduction to DC pension, default strategies, pension consolidation and my personal pension arrangements. Key takeaways: Your Defined Contribution (“DC”) pension builds up using your monthly contributions along with your employer's. Contributions are invested into a diversified portfolio which may consist of shares, bonds and alternative investments. Your pension pot is subject to investment risk – this will decrease as you approach retirement automatically (unless you opt to choose your own investments). Taking too little investment risk can compromise your final pension value. Welcome to Make it Stack! In this episode we talk of the dispersion seen in stock market performance with sectors such as technology going from strength to strength and other sectors falling by the wayside in the wake of Covid-19. Will & Joe share their thoughts on Lifetime ISAs and the potential use for young UK tax residents. A lifetime ISA can be opened by an individual aged between 18-39. Up to £4000 can be added each tax year with the UK government contributing a 25% bonus on the value of all subscriptions. In our opinion, this provides a good platform for leveraging returns as all the cash can be invested. The catch is that the money has to be used for a first time house purchase or withdrawn for retirement (>60 years old) otherwise you will incur penalties. Please see this link for more information on LISAs: https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/a-guide-to-lifetime-isas#:~:text=Lifetime%20ISAs%20(also%20known%20as,set%20limit%2C%20every%20tax%20year. Stocks discussed: Ocado, Morrisons, Tesla, Spotify. Stay strong and "Ride The Vol" Peace.
In this episode, we talk about taking the plunge and attempting to formulate a way of deciding how to allocate money to the stock market.
