Welcome back, everyone! I sat down with my new friend Daniel Wedman, the head of special situations at Sopris Capital. We delved into a variety of topics, focusing on the dynamic world of Bitcoin and crypto investments, and the evolving landscape of capital markets.Daniel's Career JourneyDaniel shared his fascinating career trajectory, starting from his early days at Citigroup on a special situations team, to his roles at SL Green and Wheelock Street Capital. His journey into the crypto world began as a side hobby of mining Bitcoin, which eventually led him to join Galaxy Digital's Bitcoin mining team.Sopris Capital and Investment StrategiesAt Sopris Capital, Daniel initially joined to build out the real estate arm but soon found himself pitching innovative investment ideas to Andy Paul, the open-minded founder. One notable strategy involved an ASIC arbitrage, where they imported ASICs from Asia, mined Bitcoin while waiting for them to sell, and then sold them at a premium.Bitcoin ATMsWe discussed the lucrative business of Bitcoin ATMs, which Daniel stumbled upon through a meetup in New York. Sopris Capital started with 50 machines in Canada and expanded to 200 in the U.S., with plans for further growth. Daniel highlighted the strong cash-on-cash returns and the significant market potential, especially among the underbanked.Stranded Energy and Bitcoin MiningDaniel explained the concept of stranded energy and how Bitcoin mining can utilize cheap, otherwise wasted energy sources. He shared an example of a curtailed wind energy project in West Texas, where they built a data center to mine Bitcoin using cheap wind energy.Economic Shifts and Investment OpportunitiesWe touched on the broader economic shifts and how they create opportunities for agile and flexible investors. Daniel emphasized the importance of reading the tea leaves and understanding the second and third-order consequences of policies aimed at helping working-class Americans.Compliance and Industry MaturationThe conversation also covered the increasing compliance requirements in the Bitcoin ATM industry and how this is leading to consolidation, with smaller players being acquired or going dark. Daniel sees this as a positive development, signaling the maturation of the industry.Future of Energy and ComputeDaniel shared insights from his time at Galaxy Digital, emphasizing the critical role of energy in the future of digital networks and compute. He expressed optimism about breakthroughs in energy technology, which could unlock a new era of innovation.Closing ThoughtsIt was a pleasure having Daniel Wedman on the show. His deep knowledge and innovative approach to crypto investments provided valuable insights for our listeners. As always, major changes in the world present opportunities for those who are prepared to adapt and innovate.Thank you for tuning in to The Charlie Shrem Show. It does nothing but sit there and look sweet. The shine may be coming off everything else, but it will never come off gold. It's up 55% since inception in October 2023 and going strong. My firm belief is that everyone should own some gold. Especially now.My guide to investing in gold is here. If you are looking to buy gold, try the Pure Gold Company.2. Bitcoin (5% allocation)HODL is another way of saying Dolce Far Niente, and, even with the current shake out, bitcoin has been another winner. It has more than tripled since inception (a 233% gain). Some will argue bitcoin has no place in a “low risk” portfolio such as this. I'd argue that the greater risk is not owning bitcoin. For those in the UK who can't buy it directly or buy the ETFs, our vehicle to play bitcoin via a UK-broker, and circumvent/satisfy ill-conceived-FCA regulation, was to own Nasdaq-listed Strategy Inc (Nasdaq:MSTR).This is one volatile stock, and the chart now looks nasty, but its President Michael Saylor is a genius. He embraces volatility, seeing it as a feature not a flaw. And the company has been another winner, up 9x since the inception of the portfolio, even after the recent correction.By the way, Strategy is proving a leading indicator for bitcoin - it was already falling when bitcoin was re-testing its old high. That makes it a super-useful forecaster. Take note.3. Special Situations (10%)This is the fun/painful part of the portfolio. Lightbridge (NASDAQ:LTBR) was a big winner here, as was and the tax-loss trade (time to exit this one if you haven't already). Junior miners, Condor and tax-loss trade aside, continue to suck.By the way, check out this nuts Lightbridge chart. The bots must have got hold of it. Surely one be one to buy on the dips and exit on the spikes.4. Uranium (5% allocation, reduced to 2.5%)I reduced the uranium allocation to 2.5% in February 2024, because it all felt too frothy. That has proved a good decision, as the price has since come down. We are in proper bear market now.I don't like uranium miners. Most of them will not see any production for years, decades even and are, therefore, drains on capital. We own the metal itself.

On today's episode I interviewed Eyal Malinger, Managing Partner at Resurge Growth Partners. We delved into Eyal's journey through the venture capital world, exploring his strategies for identifying high-potential ventures and his vision for the future of tech entrepreneurship. From his early days as a software engineer to his roles at McKinsey, Oaktree Capital and Beringea, Eyal shares the pivotal moments that shaped his career and led him to establish Resurge Growth Partners. Join us as Eyal unveils the thesis behind Resurge Growth Partners, a fund designed to bridge a critical gap in the market. He explains how the traditional venture model, with its focus on exponential growth, often overlooks companies that have solid products and teams but don't fit the high-growth template. These "orphaned" ventures, as Eyal calls them, are the businesses Resurge Growth Partners aims to support, providing them with the resources and guidance needed to thrive. Eyal also sheds light on the fund's geographical focus, emphasizing the importance of proximity and hands-on involvement in the UK, Europe, and Israel. He discusses the fund's control-oriented approach, contrasting it with the typical venture capital model and highlighting the importance of cultural alignment and shared goals with portfolio companies. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Eyal addresses the challenges of transitioning a company from a growth-focused to a profitability-focused model. He shares insights into the introspective journey CEOs must undertake and the importance of open communication and self-awareness among founders. Eyal also discusses conflict resolution strategies within leadership teams, offering practical advice for maintaining alignment and ensuring a company's trajectory remains on course. As we explore the future of tech entrepreneurship, Eyal provides a candid assessment of the current market landscape, the impact of technological advancements, and the evolving trends in sectors poised for innovation. My guest today is Jeremy Giffon. I spend all my time trying to find people who have some “singularity” to them. People who seem like they can do an N of 1 something. Having spent many days with Jeremy recently, he strikes me as one of those people. He was the first employee and general partner at private equity firm, Tiny, which buys and holds internet and technology focused businesses. Prior to that, he was on the founding team of MediaCore, which was acquired by Workday. The focus of our discussion is about esoteric opportunities that exist in private markets. How misaligned incentives and co-ordination problems create special situations for people like Jeremy to invest in. The rest of the conversation is wide-ranging and covers everything from compensation advice to meeting your heroes. Please enjoy my discussion with Jeremy Giffon.
