We live in a social/political climate that thrives on making us divided. Changing that will require proximity and relationships, but the most inclusive spaces are often aesthetically uninviting and falling apart. This show wants to change that! Join Rev. Sarah Heath and Josephine Jael Jimenez as they share their dream of moving us from a DIY to a DIT (do it together). Each week they chat with an expert about making space—aesthetically, theologically, socially, etc. This is a show where no church/synagogue/community center closet is left unturned.

Content Warning: You may feel your own trauma activated by some of the content of this episode. It discusses prejudice, gentrification, exclusion, and immigration so please listen with awareness. Listener discretion is advised. Many communities create a dualistic environment where one is focused on either action or belief. Put another way: Some folks get overly focused on right belief (orthodoxy) and other folks get overly focused on right action (orthopraxis). This week's Space Makers, Dr. Robyn Henderson-Espinoza and Rev. Anna Golladay, are the hosts of the Activist Theology Podcast, a podcast born out of the Activist Theology Project. Both the podcast and the project are creating a movement focused on reclaiming the practice of integrating theory and practice. This conversation is both challenging and filled with hope. We talk about why getting really local with our activism can be the best way to live out our own beliefs and why exhaustion is different for those who live in marginalized bodies. *Quick update on the show- this is the final episode of season three. As Sarah makes space for what is next in her own life the show is going on a break. Please check out our previous episodes and thank you for all of your support. It discusses non-affirming schools and churches, gentrification and exclusion, so please listen with awareness. Listener discretion is advised. More and more than ever before, our “first impressions” are happening online. This is true for dating, but also for how we first perceive any organization. When looking at a website or online posting we intuitively know if this is “a space” for us. This week's Space Maker, Nathanial Totten Green, creates online and in person gatherings that seek to continually welcome and include. Nathanial is the Director of Communications for Q Christian Fellowship, and the Communications & Operations Specialist for Grace Pointe Fellowship, a fully inclusive community in Nashville, Tennessee. This conversation discusses how curating content has the opportunity to be inviting, but also gentrifying. In this conversation, Nathanial offers great insights on questions to ask to “make space” and how to avoid continuing to define who is and who is not welcome in a space. Who knew a font could make you feel more included? Designers. Designers knew. This is a delightful conversation that we hope you will enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. This week, we are joined by fellow Irreverent podcaster, Dr. Brad Onishi. Brad is the co-host of the widely beloved (and sometimes hated) podcast Straight White American Jesus. They tackle all things Evangelicalism and it's ties to right-wing Christian nationalism. In this episode, we talk about Orange County, where the three of us have lived at some point, and how it has become a breeding ground for the biggest movements within right-wing Evangelicalism. But even these people need some space in the world, regardless of whether we agree with them. Brad is on a mission to uncover the roots of the movement and coming up with new ways to challenge and invite them into great empathy. It discusses trauma, chronic pain, disability and deaths related to Covid 19, so please listen with awareness. Listener discretion is advised. Making spaces, like a flower garden, that serve no “purpose” other than beauty teaches us that worth is not predicated by “usefulness.” This week's Space Maker, Stephanie Tait, joined us for a conversation from her garden to discuss the lessons of resistance she has learned over the last year tending her garden. Stephanie is an author, speaker, disability advocate, and trauma survivor. Her work aims to create space for the reality of suffering and help provide practical tools for its management and acknowledgement of that suffering in communities of faith and beyond. This conversation is a beautiful reminder that we cannot bypass our suffering to arrive quickly at purpose. Every season is needed and of value, even if it appears barren and unproductive. Space making, like gardening, isn't always about what is happening above ground, but some of the biggest changes have to happen below the soil. We hope you enjoy this challenging conversation because we sure did! This week's Space Maker is Rebecca Ching, LMFT. It discusses childhood trauma, faith transitions, and difficult family relationships so please listen with awareness. Listener discretion is advised. Throughout history, people have used humor to make space to discuss the things that culture has deemed taboo. This week's Space Makers, Josh Link and Adrian Gibbs, use humor to have difficult conversations around American Evangelical Christian culture. Josh and Adrian, or perhaps better known by their moniker “Dirty Rotten Church Kids,” use a blend of genius memes, tiktok greatness, podcast goodness, and fun merch to create space for people to question some of the things that they once held dearest. This conversation is equal parts fun and deep as we discuss the gift of comedy in opening us up to critique and process some of the worst messages we internalized as part of the Evangelical community. Whether you are or have ever been a person of faith, this is a great conversation about why we need humor in our lives, the need to stay connected to our own agency, and the ability to connect to our own bodies, thoughts, and feelings. Write up This week, we had another incredible conversation with Space Maker, Chris Rodgriguez. As you may remember from Episode 31, Chris is a mindset and movement coach who helps people connect their work, their souls, and their bodies. Chris returns to the show to discuss the need for making physical space and time to do our own internal work so you can be present for others. Chris challenged us to step away from our cell phones and to make sure we have boundaries, not just for ourselves, but for others as well. Chris reminds us that our base is belonging and that we have to set up practices to remind us of that base identity. This is another deep one, but we also bring up lighter things, like h0w The Shining is the perfect cautionary tale for workaholics. Very light, we know. Making Space for our own spiritual journey often takes us down a path of leaving our familiar religious community and that can leave one feeling disoriented and alone. This week’s Space Maker is Blake Chastain, someone who has spent the last five years connecting people who have the shared story of experiencing a faith shift. Blake is the host of the Exvangelical and Powers & Principalities podcasts and is the writer of The Post-Evangelical Post newsletter. Blake coined the #exvangelical hashtag, alongside the launch of the Exvangelical podcast, in July 2016 and since then, the podcast has been downloaded over 500,000 times. Thanks to Blake, exvangelical conversations and communities have proliferated online. We talk to Blake about why he thinks public conversations about faith shifts are important, why he challenges the system that is stacked in his favor, and the importance of story when it comes to understanding yourself and others. One of the unique features of the human species is the desire to live a ”meaningful, purpose driven life.” From master classes to bumper stickers, everyone seems to have a suggestion on how we can find our unique purpose in the world. It takes boldness and fearlessness to actually make the space in our lives to evaluate if we are indeed happy with the direction of our lives and vocation. On this episode, we talk to Space Makers Crystal Steckel and John Keeling. Both of these bold humans asked the question, “Is my job my true vocation?” When the answer was no, they made the brave choice to change directions. This change of vocation led to Crystal becoming an RN, and John a CNA as he works towards also becoming an RN. Both of them have served in the medical field during the difficult time of COVID and both would say that. although the work has been hard, it is truly what they are meant to be doing. It’s hard to imagine that you could feel alone when Beyoncé is amongst your friends, when you’ve created programs and systems that have housed and cared for thousands, and you are the lead pastor of a large progressive church. But as this week’s Space Maker will teach us, until we separate our work from our identity, we will always feel isolated. This week’s space maker is the incredible Rev. Dr. Rudy Rasmus. Rudy shares with us about the loss and celebrations of being a Space Maker, why it's our pain—not our gifts—that help us heal the world, and why prosperity won’t get us anywhere. Rudy is an author, humanitarian, and leadership consultant with a passion for outreach to the world’s most challenged communities. He co-pastors the St. John’s Church in Downtown Houston with his wife, Juanita. When we enter into any space, the question we all ask is, “Do I belong here?” This week’s Space Maker, Mason Mennenga, spent years participating in a church community that invited everyone to belong through participation. From infant to scholar, everyone has something to offer and their worship service provided the space for all forms of participation. Spending his formative years in such an intentional community helped Mason become someone who makes space in all of his work for everyone. As an aspiring Theologian, Podcaster, YouTuber, and well known twitter user, Mason tries to engage complex philosophies and concepts in a way that is approachable. His work suggests that even in complex theological conversations, we all belong. We hope you enjoy this week’s conversation from three former church youth workers who still want everyone to feel like there is room for them to participate. This week’s Space Maker Jackie Gronlund has been on a lifelong journey to find a space to label “ home.” During our conversation she shared with us one of the big discoveries she made on that journey- finding home meant finding a healthier relationship with her own body. Jackie, a former YouTube star, and author, knew that this discovery wasn’t a unique experience as many of us have disassociated and distanced ourselves from our bodies. She has set out on her new podcast “The Unity Project” to help people find their own sense of home. On her show she chats with a diverse group of people about how they have each cultivated a relationship with their own bodies and found a sense of home and belonging. This week, we are joined by Space Maker, Spencer Rose Taylor! Spencer is a podcaster over at the Speaking in Church podcast, co-hosted by our very own Josie. Her passion for making space for others comes from her call to ministry and the barriers she’s faced in that call because of her gender. The Speaking in Church podcast is all about Christianity then, now and the future. On the pod, they talk about everything from current events and how your theology informs your responses to them to other hot topics in the Church. It’s a show aimed for deconstructions of all stages, speaking from the lens of the women that 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 warned you about. This week’s space maker is Savannah Rae Carreno. Savannah is the creator and primary writer for “The Juice Edit” website, and hosts the incredible conversation based “Please Elaborate” ministry. She makes space both online and in person by inviting people to ask hard questions and explore educated perspectives on every topic leaving nothing out as taboo. Online her Juice Edit website is a place she describes as, “where culture and theology collide awkwardly.” In both spaces Savannah creates space for people to question the lenses with which they regard the world whether that be from a cultural or a religious perspective. The conversation goes everywhere from what the heck is clubhouse, why we all need to learn to say “I don’t know” more, and how “knowing” can be an idol. She is a first-generation college graduate who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Howard University, and a Master of Divinity from Duke University and Certificate in Nonprofit Management from North Carolina Central University. Her resume is impressive working with everyone from the United Nations to the celebrity brand of Kobe Bryant- but her heart has always been in creating spaces for other people to have a chance to be mentored and creating ecosystems that nurture and cultivate diverse talent . All the work she does is as she says “in service to the younger me” being the person she needed as she was growing up. Often Making Space requires us to step out of the communities and the mindsets we previously held closely. After taking that step out it can be surprising when we discover that wholeness and integration require us to make peace with the places we once had to reject and to share new perspectives and experiences with both our old and new communities. This week’s Space Maker Brenda Davies never set out to become an expert in Christian sexual ethics/ theology, nor when she packed her bags for Hollywood did she see herself becoming a YouTube star, but once she experienced an awakening she ended up becoming both and making space not just for herself but for thousands of other people who weren’t able to find spaces online. She now invites other people to become inquisitive, fearless, sex-positive, free-thinking Christians in the modern world. This conversation is filled with grace and empathy for people who have experienced and shared toxic values. Season Three of Making Spaces had to begin with one of our favorite space makers... Kevin Garcia. Kevin is a Spiritual Director and Intuitive Life Coach. Through his work as a digital pastor and public theologian, Kevin has used their writing, podcast, and YouTube Channel to help foster communities of authentic spiritual seeking, helping people pull apart bad theology and beginning to reconstruct sustainable spiritual practices. Kevin is a fantastic conversation partner and a recurring guest of the making spaces podcast. This episode includes a conversation about why we need to face mortality to truly live, and how to make space for our own grief. Kevin reminded us that grief is a lovely dancing partner and that only by being willing to dance can we move through our grief and continue to dance with all the partners life throws at us! How do you know when it's time to step out of “good work” to make space for “great work?” After a traumatic loss Lanecia Rouse Tinsley, this week’s space maker, took the bold leap of stepping out of creative ministry with those experiencing homelessness to become a full time creative herself. Lanecia is now a multidisciplinary visual artist and the owner and creator of LAR Art Studio. Her artistic portfolio includes a range of work in abstract painting, photography, teaching, writing, speaking. Her workshop and community art experiences challenge others to make space for their own creativity. This conversation was inspiring, and challenges the notion that art has to be a discipline of difficulty instead of a pursuit of passion. How can you make diverse “ivory tower” theology interesting, and even palatable to the masses? The same way you make well crafted beer- by being intentional about the ingredients you put in, and being willing to share the process. This week’s space making guest is Dr. Tripp Fuller. Tripp is currently a professor in Edinburgh Scotland and the creator/host of the beloved podcast “Homebrewed Christianity.” He has spent his career opening up the theological palate of people by making theology approachable, interesting, and dare we even say fun. His ability to both love the church, and see its faults allows people to do the same. This is a really fun conversation about making space for the intellectual pursuit of spirituality and theological difference. This week on the show we had an incredible conversation with space maker and professional coach Laura Foster. Laura helps people to rethink their vocation and reclaim their human being”ness” and stop being what she calls a “human doing.” After a very successful career in the fashion industry a cancer diagnosis caused Laura to reevaluate her priorities. She ended up leaving her position to go on a search for what brought her joy and purpose. She ended up getting a masters in spiritual psychology and creating a coaching business that helps people move beyond the labels to evaluate what they really want to create and how they want to take up space in the world. This episode is filled with tons of practical ways to start reimagining your vocation and the ways that you can make space for your passions and dreams even without leaving the job you already have. Ana is a project engineer, who happens to speak four languages (NBD,) and has developed a workwear line for women that is designed to break down barriers in STEM industries. Not satisfied with wearing safety shoes designed for men she took it upon herself to change the entire industry creating Xena Workwear for Women. As she says “What you wear has a major impact on your self-confidence, which in turn impacts a number of other job-related factors, including performance, promotability, and long-term career success.” This conversation is filled with hope and we are so glad Ana the time to sit down with us and share how we can make space for women in male dominated spaces. This week we talk to visual artist/spiritual director Scott Erickson about how to make space for wonder even during seasons you don’t enjoy. Is it possible to use research to make space for people? What do we do when making space for ourselves and others creates a massive shift in our belief system? How can we hold onto our belonging and identity when everything feels like it has shifted? I am grateful to Colby Martin the author of “the Shift” and for this conversation about shifting in your beliefs, and finding hope in helping others in the midst of their own shift. Colby was willing to hop on Making Spaces with literally zero preparation and we had an incredible conversation about making space. Colby wears many hats (which I can appreciate)- he is the cofounder of Sojourn Grace Collective in San Diego, and he cohosts his own podcast “The Kate and Colby Show.” He also helps to resource progressive Christian communities across the US through Launchpad partners, and as if that isn't enough he also has written two books "Unclobber- Rethinking our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality" and recently “The Shift- Surviving and Thriving after Moving from Conservative to Progressive Christianity." I don’t know about you, but I think we all have those friends who make us believe the things we thought were out of reach or impossible are completely attainable, Dana Bakich is one of those people for me. Maybe it's because I have watched the musical Hamilton every day since it came out, but I think the world needs more people like Dana. People who see the unimaginable and are willing to figure out how to create it. She has a "not yet" mentality that makes you believe that you could create anything. Dana is the founder of "Positive Equation"- a digital consultant for nonprofits, she also has worked on shows like American Idol and in marketing for large marketing firms. All of these different work environments has led her to her second business and passion, HerDesk. A sustainable and functional desk made by and for female entrepreneurs. It has been incredible to watch Dana dream and execute on that dream. Whatever Dana creates she always brings people into the story with partnership and a real desire to amplify the work of others. Friends today on the podcast I am delighted to share with you my friend Drew Brow. Drew is an artist, advocate, pastor, poet, songwriter storyteller. As a musician he has played everywhere from large festival stages, churches, concert halls, pubs, and holding house concerts across the country. Drew lives just outside of Toronto, Canada, and engages/encourages people to think about antiracism and how to live out justice & an “open table"-minded presence in their own local neighborhood context. Whether it's spending time with people workshopping ideas around social justice and community connectedness or producing songs and albums for bands and artists – he's driven to reach people through the creative arts. Making Space for community, wonder and gratitude through music and story. Our conversation circled around the active nature of peace making. I am really inspired by Drew and the work that he is doing. I hope that you find the conversation helpful as we do the work of making space and engaging in Anti-racism. There is no denying that 2020 has been the year of disruption- some much needed disruption. As systems of privilege are being called out through the work of Black Lives Matter and Covid 19 is teaching us that our health is tied to each other we are rethinking what community looks like and what leadership in that reality looking like. Something new is being born but we are in the liminal space- the question has become how do you make space for what could be while caring for what is? This week I am excited to share with you my conversation with Dave Harder and Bryce Dymond two people asking that very question. Dave and Bryce help run a company called “parish properties” which defines its work as driven by concern for the environment, focused on the spiritual health of the community, financial sustainability, and social impact. They help churches think through how to develop their space in a way that is sustainable not just for church community but for the neighborhood they inhabit- this conversation could not be more timely as the idea of gentrification and colonization is rightfully at the forefront of conversation. Today I am excited to introduce to you my friend Jenna Tourjé. Jenna is an urban planner, facilitator, and community builder. She walks with communities on the path to making healthy, whole, and equitable places. Her goal is to make spaces where everyone belongs, and is involved in shaping the future of their own neighborhoods. She facilitates conversations on systematic change, community development, immigration reform, equity, and coalition-building in neighborhoods and government agencies throughout California. This conversation could not be more timely as the Black Lives Matter movement reminds us of the importance of recognizing privilege, and the necessity of taking a back seat when needed in creating space. I hope you enjoy and are as challenged as I was by this conversation. Episode Information Introduction Music “it can be done” by Airae via epidemic sound. We live in a time that is very polarized and differing opinions seem to be suspect. We need to figure out a way forward, but it seems hard to do if we can't even have a conversation, and we debate only happens from behind computer screens. There are people trying to create spaces where differing opinions are not only welcome, but encouraged, and met with curiosity. Pete Enns and Jared Byas are two of these wonderful humans. They are hosts of the podcast “The Bible for Normal People.” Pete a professor of Biblical Studies, and Jared a former pastor, professor, and entrepreneur have a depth of academic knowledge that most of us only dream about (ok I only dream about, but I am a nerd.) Even with all that academic knowledge and experience, they are able to take the very complex and explain it in approachable ways. Believe it or not people don’t think about the bible in the same way… ok maybe everyone knew that. They make space for people to sit in the tension of differing beliefs in a way that I find inspiring. This conversation was challenging and helpful as we try and navigate vast differences in thought and interpretation. If you haven’t heard their podcast I highly recommend it- even if you aren’t someone who would normally listen to a podcast with the word bible in the name. Friends, you may already know the work of this week's "Making Spaces Podcast" guest Morgan Harper Nichols. Her well known instagram poetry/visual art is signed with the simple letters MHN. Morgan is an incredibly talented creative. She is a poet, a musician, and a visual artist. Each piece is based on the personal stories her followers send her and offers a sense of hope and solidarity. Our conversation centers around making space while letting go of our fear of critics or comparison. Morgan is such a gift and this conversation was inspiring and challenging. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and I hope it challenges you to think about the importance of letting each story be told in the native words of those who share it. Friends Episode 13 is a special episode about making space to engage the topic of racial reconciliation. Episode 14 will be released on the usual day (Tuesday) with artist Morgan Harper Nichols. For this episode I am grateful to Pastor Lamont Hartman for being willing to record a quick conversation. He offered some helpful practices, and things to take into consideration, when confronting injustice. Lamont is a seasoned pastor and non-profit developer. He has spent years working around racial reconciliation, and has hosted seminars for people to engage the need for bridge building and deep friendships. Check out more of his work https://www.instagram.com/lamonthartman/ I myself, am by no means an expert, and this episode was created in response to people asking me to share my thoughts and opinions.I think getting out of the way is a better use of my platform and I would invite you to engage the work of https://www.instagram.com/latashamorrison/, https://www.instagram.com/austinchanning/, https://www.instagram.com/theandrehenry/, https://www.instagram.com/drewbrownmusic/ Please listen to this episode with some grace.
