EPISODE #80 - Welcome to this special edition of the Yes Collective Podcast. This one is a collaboration with our new friends at REVcovery podcast, Sarah Heath and Justin Gentry. The REVcovery podcast is focused on life after Christian ministry, recovering from being a professional Christian, and finding meaning in the aftermath. Justin doesn't fit the bill for their typical guest: he's never been in Christian ministry and never was a professional Christian, although his father was, and he researched Christian megachurches for his first dissertation, so he's no stranger to this world. But the main reason we had this conversation was to talk about community and transcendence after church, or what Justin calls "post-church." Justin W., Sarah, and Justin G. had a really good time chopping it up about what a post-church space could look like, the importance of embodiment and dancing, what spirituality can be after religion, and who the "post-church" is even for. If you care about building new spaces for community, transcendence, and personal growth then buckle up, you're gonna love this collaborative episode with Sarah Heath and Justin Gentry at the REVcovery podcast.Check out the REVcovery podcast here: https://www.irreverent.fm/show/revcovery/Sarah Heath's personal website is here: https://revsarahheath.comJustin Gentry's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justin.gentry/?hl=enJustin Wilford's "Post-Church" essay is here: https://www.justinwilford.com/newsletter-archive/we-need-post-church-churches-fullYes Collective is hosted by Justin Wilford, PhDJustin Wilford, PhD, is a co-founder of Yes Collective, an educator, a writer, and an emotional health coach. In our first episode, we discuss the new cat-friendly guidelines we've created with AAFP: Cat Friendly Interactions: Approach and Handling Techniques and The Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment. Nathalie Dowgray speaks with Ilona Rodan, Kelly St. Denis, Samantha Taylor, and Sarah Heath - all contributors to the new guidelines. We share some of the positive impacts that we've seen and how attitudes have changed in the 10 years since ISFM and AAFP launched the original guidelines - the cat friendly clinic programme and the cat friendly practice programme. We discuss reasons for updating the title of the guidelines and why we need to move away from negative terms like “angry” or “aggressive” when approaching cats in the consulting room. We explain some of the terminologies that we use in the guidelines and why it's important for vets to recognise emotions and understand cats on a deeper level. We also talk about how you can create a welcoming environment for cats, whether you work in mixed practice or cat-only clinics and the benefits of working in a cat friendly way. Lastly, we share our top tips for cat friendly interactions! The guidelines are being published in November 2022 and will be free to view on the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgeries website. For ISFM members, the full recording of this roundtable discussion is available for you to listen to at portal.icatcare.org. Rev. Sarah Heath, author, designer, pastor, life coach, and host of great podcasts like Revcovery, joins us on the Slow Train to Heck this week. Sarah grew up in Ontario working at Christian camp where she discovered her own innate leadership skills which would eventually translate to her being a great leader in church ministry. When she moved to the Bible Belt in the USA, she encountered a different version of Christianity than the one she was used to in Canada. Sarah shares her story of navigating American Christianity while moving up in the ministry world as a "professional Christian", becoming the "Pastor Sarah" persona while losing touch with how to be "Sarah" - until she eventually left formal Christian ministry and was able to rediscover who Sarah is outside of that environment. Sarah is a United Methodist clergywoman who is going through her own season of deconstruction and trying to figure out how, exactly, to do that as a pastor--how to navigate the difficulty of being a person and a pastor who is going through a season of doubt, how to find networks of support, how to provide that support when it's not readily available, and how to continue to see God's grace in the small moments of life… in an airstream trailer.Sarah is an ordained elder in the California Pacific Annual Conference. On this last Sunday after the Epiphany, our friend Sarah Heath leads us in a reflection on the Transfiguration of our Lord. May God give us eyes to see the glory all around.
If you do not know who you are, the world will tell you who you are. And If you lead from a place of who you think you should be instead of who you truly are, it will take a toll on you and those around you. There is immense effort put into editing instead of owning your multiplicities, leaving you exhausted and confused. You also give up your power and give up what is most sacred in you when you do not make room for embracing the beautiful multiplicities in you and in all of us when you filter yourself. But when you begin to unpack the burdens you carry that impact how you show up in the world, you can embrace all of your multiplicities instead of trying to fit into a mold of what you think the world wants you to be.It can take a lot of effort sorting through the noise and the baggage you carry to figure out who you are and to embrace all of your identities. My guest today hit a wall in her own life and found the power of embracing all of her multiplicities instead of trying to fit into a mold that never really fit her. Reverend Sarah Heath is an ordained United Methodist clergywoman. Originally from Canada, Sarah attended Duke Divinity School where she earned her Master of Divinity degree in 2005.Sarah currently serves as church consultant and one on one life coach helping people through transitions in faith and in life. She is the host and creator of the podcasts Making Spaces and Sonderlust, and co-host of Your Favorite Aunts and REVcovery She is also the author of two books What's Your Story? Time is the raw material of our days. On the one hand it is precise and predictable. The clock chimes hours into equal measures. But on the other hand it is pliable and easily warped. We write the syllabi, we schedule assignments, we set grading schemes. If we are careless, time can unravel and spin out of control. In online education we have intentionally loosened some of the time threads. We empower faculty and learners with greater control over their schedules. But there is a wrinkle in online learning that anytime, anywhere easily slips into all-the-time, everywhere. As educators, we need to manage our time commitments and create effective experiences for learners. This is even more important in the covid pandemic, when work and life schedules for many of us became fully unstrung. Kieran and Dan have been discussing the importance of efficient use of time and energy in online education. If we are Teaching in a Time Warp, how can we be sure to optimize our own time and effort -- and improve the efficiency and efficacy of activities for learners? This is a question we will return to periodically on Wired Ivy, starting with this episode's guests, professors Sarah Heath and Beau Shine of Indiana University Kokomo.
In this conversation we talk about Sarah's journey to becoming a progressive pastor in Orange County, the creativity that emerges when you stop fighting the old, and how transformation only happens in real relationships.
Come listen to Rev. Sarah Heath share her story, some of the good, the bad, and the curious! We discuss her role in ministry, her time on sabbatical, and the role curiosity plays in her faith! CONNECT: @Revsarahheath
This week, I spoke with Kevin Garcia & Rev. Sarah Heath (aka YFA, or Your Favorite Aunts). This is part 2 of our conversation, and you can hear part 1 over on Your Favorite Aunts! This conversation has a chill vibe. It's the type of quiet conversation you have in the corner at a party. I don't know about you, but that's not something I've experienced in well over a year, so this conversation ended up meaning a lot. We talk about how the pandemic affects caretakers, how it affects community, what the future of spiritual care and community might be, and whether math involves gnomes. Listen to Your Favorite Aunts. In this episode I chat with pioneering veterinary behaviourist Sarah Heath. I have known Sarah since we were both students at Bristol, and so this episode becomes quite a personal one. We discus important influences and in particular the importance of educating both vets and owners. We also look to the future and what we feel are the priorities. Sarah is extremely candid about the impact of the health challenges she has faced - truly inspirational.
Dr Sarah Heath is an RCVS and European Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine and was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2018. She is an External Lecturer in small animal behavioural medicine on the veterinary undergraduate course at Liverpool University. In 2019 she gained her Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. She is a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist under the ASAB accreditation scheme and registered as a Veterinary Behaviourist with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. She sees clinical cases across North West England and has a special interest in the interplay between emotional and physical illness in dogs and cats and particularly in the role of pain. She promotes the recognition of emotional health issues in companion animals and the role of the veterinary profession in safeguarding the welfare of animals in this context. Sarah lectures extensively, at home and abroad, on behavioural medicine and is an author, co-author and editor of several books. Basically - when it comes to anything behaviour related - she REALLY knows her stuff. And you don't get this good at assessing behaviour without learning a few other things - about people, clients, our profession, and yourself. Join us in this far-reaching conversation with a Sarah about career longevity, connecting with clients and with the greater animal care community, Sarah's self-care challenges, behaviour medicine as a career and much, much more.
