Ken welcomes back to the podcast the originator of the hashtag that launched a movement: #exvangelical, Blake Chastain. They discuss his new book, Exvangelical and Beyond: How American Christianity Went Radical and the Movement Fighting Back. An undergraduate at an evangelical university in Central Indiana, Blake had questions - about the Bible, the exclusive truth claims, the identification with conservative politics, the indifference to Earth care, to race, to social justice, and finally, the full-on embrace of MAGA Trumpism. It was a crisis of faith. When his hashtag went viral, CBS called him for a life-changing interview. Blake started The Exvangelical Podcast. In a wide-ranging conversation, Ken and Blake explore the history of evangelicalism and the contributing factors that have led to the evangelicalism we know today. In an episode that was recorded two days after the Trump victory, and less than 200 days from the next Australian Federal Election, this episode could not be more important or timely. In it, I chat to Blake Chastain, who launched the Exvangelical Podcast back in 2016 as he talks about his new book "Exvangelical and Beyond: How American Christianity Went Radical and the Movement That's Fighting Back." We have long known that, where America goes religiously and politically, the western world tends to follow. In line with this, strains of Christian Nationalism, even white Christian nationalism, and other forms of fringe and extreme right-wing politics has spiked both here and overseas. Its one to pay attention to. Make sure you give it a listen. And if you're in Australia in the political scene, make sure you take the warnings and the advice seriously. www.blakechastain.com https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/747796/exvangelical-and-beyond-by-blake-chastain/ Instagram @brchastian_

They discuss the origins of the #exvangelical hashtag, coined by Blake, and its role in giving voice to those disillusioned with evangelical institutions. Together, they examine the reasons people have left — from issues like sexism and racism to political conservatism — and how these individuals have found solidarity and community in the exvangelical movement. Blake also shares insights from his new book, Exvangelical and Beyond, where he delves into the enduring impact of this movement and what it means for the future. This episode offers a thought-provoking look at how former evangelicals are reclaiming their stories and challenging powerful institutions in meaningful ways. Long before most of us were a glint in the eye of today's deconstruction world, Blake Chastain created the Exvangelical hashtag and Facebook group, giving the world the title and the framework for the good, bad, and the ugly of all things related to deconstruction. He also started the Irreverent Media Group bringing together so many great podcasts like the Dirty Rotten Church Kids, Straight White American Jesus, Go Home Bible, You're Drunk, God Has Not Given, Speaking in Church, and of course, the mothership: Exvangelical. These podcasts, that Facebook group, and the hashtag were the bedrock of the deconstruction world. Since then, as you'll hear me rant about, many more voices have entered the fray, some of them great, some of them...not so great. But however you feel about White former pastors with tattoos taking up too much space, Blake has written an incredible book, Exvangelical and Beyond, giving the history of both evangelicalism and our current movement away from it. Compared to some insipid influencers just telling you that racism and homophobia are bad, Blake's book is an actual pillar of information and truth. "Exvangelical is a social movement of people who have left evangelicalism, especially white evangelical churches in the United States, for atheism, agnosticism, progressive Christianity, or any other religious belief, or lack thereof. The hashtag #exvangelical was coined by Blake Chastain in 2016 to make 'a safe space for people to find solidarity with others who have gone through similar experiences.'"*In this episode I respond to a video from an "ex-vangelical" and try to view her objections to Christianity through a nuanced lens with sympathy but also an eye to lies that people believe about God as well as abuses/failures of the ChurchFollow my ministry with InFaith by going to:https://www.facebook.com/DennisInFaithIf you have any questions or comments that you'd like me to address you can shoot me an email to dennissutherby@infaith.orgAnd if you'd like to support my ministry with InFaith you can text the word "discipleship" to 41444 or head over to https://infaith.org/dennis-sutherby and give there. Dr. Bradley Onishi is a man on the rise. His podcast, Straight White American Jesus, which he co-hosts with Dr. Daniel Miller, is one of the most popular shows in the politics and religion category. Brad's book, Preparing for War- The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next is already a best-seller on Amazon during its presale days, and it's out today, January 3, 2023. It's a book that should be required reading to all who care about the state of this country. We talk about Brad's time as a student at APU, and note how the white nationalist culture of the early 2000's grew into the nightmare of MAGA Nation. And we talk about our heritage as Japanese Americans and how evangelical culture made us ashamed of who we are. We're all good now, and learning and growing still, but it's tough looking back at what we once were. We do settle a score from earlier this season when Blake Chastain and I called out Brad to outdo Blake's chapel probation story, so you can hear the results of the contest now. It was a close one, but I think I made the correct ruling. Let me know if you disagree. Blake Chastain created the ExVangelical hashtag and helped start a movement that has grown into what is now known as the "deconstruction" movement. Through this community on both twitter and in real life, I've met so many super cool people, including Blake, who I consider a friend today. Someday we'll hang in person, but this episode actually has me wondering if we might BE the same person in some sort of mishap with the space/time continuum. Until we get that sorted out, this episode has Blake talking his time at Indiana Wesleyan University where he began deconstructing from evangelical christianity. He had some great professors who challenge him and inspired him, and he had the typical professors who seemed as interested in fundamentalist indoctrination as teaching their subjects. But Blake has forged his own path of not just deconstruction, but decolonization, as he speaks often about his recognition of privilege as a White man and pushes back at White supremacy and complimentarianism. This episode begins with another meeting of the Asian American Secret Society with Brad Onishi and Nate Nakao and I discussing whether or not to let a new member into the group, Veterans of Culture Wars co-host, Zach Malm. I should have probably written a script for this one, but we had fun just vamping improv-style. Zach Malm came from a family prominent in the Vineyard church world and went to Seattle Pacific University where he was sorely disappointed in both the theological depth and the academic rigor. He ended up seeking these things at a new startup church called Mars Hill. Yes, that Mars Hill. The good news Is that Zach would eventually be credited with bringing Mars Hill down when he revealed to the world that a misogynistic asshole posting on the church website was none other than head pastor Mark Driscoll, himself. He deconstructed during the Trump era and now is a co-host of the Veterans of Culture Wars podcast. You can hear more about Zach's epic tale of taking down Mars Hill Church on the Full Mutuality Podcast, and his own VCW podcast. Bonus this week: We wrote and recorded a song. It's called, "Jesus Is Cool- A-minor Worship). We joked on the VCW podcast that there weren't any worship songs in A-minor, so we decided to write a deconstruction "worship" song. Mr. ExVangelical, himself, Blake Chastain, joined the choir at the end. The song is up on Scott's soundcloud. #exvangelical and all that Episode #40 welcomes Blake Chastain who coined the #exvangelical hashtag alongside the launch of the Exvangelical podcast in July 2016. Exvangelical conversations and communities have proliferated online across social networks like Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit. Blake Chastain is host of the Exvangelical and Powers & Principalities podcasts, and writer of The Post-Evangelical Post newsletter. He is also writing a book with Convergent, an imprint of Penguin Random House. "Exvangelical" functions as both a way to find others who have left white evangelical beliefs and communities behind, as well as a helpful frame for criticizing white evangelical institutions and practices. It is not a wholesale replacement of evangelicalism, but a shared starting point--it acknowledges that we are rooted in similar experiences, and celebrates the new and diverse ways people find to flourish. Blake Chastain, host of #Exvangelical and Powers and Principalities, and the author of a recent piece on the recent Christianity Today podcast on the downfall of Mars Hill, stops by to talk about why religious leaders and thinkers refuse to listen to ex-evangelicals. He and Brad discuss the excuses that the Christianity Today podcast and other sources make about why people leave high demand religions. What becomes clear throughout the conversation is that the refusal to listen is a refusal to self-reflect on the issues within church communities and religious traditions. Blake Chastain, a member of the new podcast collective, Irreverent Media, joins Dr. Robyn and Rev. Anna for a big announcement. We are thrilled to share that the Activist Theology Podcast is the newest addition to IMG (Irreverent Media Group). Blake Chastain is the host of the Exvangelical and Powers & Principalities podcasts, and writer of The Post-Evangelical Post newsletter. Blake coined the #exvangelical hashtag alongside the launch of the Exvangelical podcast in July 2016. Since then, the podcast has been downloaded over 500,000 times, and exvangelical conversations and communities have proliferated online. Blake Chastain is back! In this rebroadcast, the creator and host of #Exvangelical, a very popular podcast. It focusses on the stories of people who have been raised in staunch evangelical traditions and then found themselves in a classic “crisis of faith.” Blake created the podcast and then the hashtag - which went viral. It caught the attention of CBS, who produced a documentary entitled “Deconstructing my Religion.” In this podcast, Blake shares his own story and the crisis that led to a period of deconstruction. Blake introduces the new series he has just launched on Christian Nationalism. Blake is the founder of the new association of podcasts called The Irreverent Media Group. Making Space for our own spiritual journey often takes us down a path of leaving our familiar religious community and that can leave one feeling disoriented and alone. This week’s Space Maker is Blake Chastain, someone who has spent the last five years connecting people who have the shared story of experiencing a faith shift. Blake is the host of the Exvangelical and Powers & Principalities podcasts and is the writer of The Post-Evangelical Post newsletter. Blake coined the #exvangelical hashtag, alongside the launch of the Exvangelical podcast, in July 2016 and since then, the podcast has been downloaded over 500,000 times. Thanks to Blake, exvangelical conversations and communities have proliferated online. We talk to Blake about why he thinks public conversations about faith shifts are important, why he challenges the system that is stacked in his favor, and the importance of story when it comes to understanding yourself and others. Hey y'all! Had a great conversation with Blake Chastain several months ago about the slow merging of evangelicalism and nationalism. We're currently watching evangelicalism in the US move from being a religious or spiritual identifier to a political identifier. For those of us who grew up in white evangelical spaces this isn't surprising. After the election of Barack Obama, white evangelical churches began closing ranks much faster than they had been before. In the 90s and 00s, there was a more room for liberal believers in white evangelical spaces but as the culture wars began to heat up with the election of the first Black (and, according to 25% of Republicans, secret Muslim) president, political "purity tests" became much more frequent. Ethicist Dr. Gushee returns to the podcast and continues the discussion of his most recent book, After Evangelicalism, The Path to a New Christianity. We talk about the election, the Biden victory, and the 70 million voters who embrace the Trumpian version of reality. He calls it a moral crisis. Gushee remembers Rachel Held Evans, and gives honorable mention to Blake Chastain and Brad Onishi; we talk about high profile Trumpian evangelicals Paula White, Jerry Falwell, Jr., Robert Jeffress, and Eric Metaxas. Gushee takes issue with Metaxas' version of Bonhoeffer. After a review of the Georgia Senate races, we focus on Gushee's proposal for a new Christian Humanism. With David's permission, Ken reads a passage from David's new book about Martin Luther (the dominionist) and Erasmus (a Christian humanist). Eric interviews Ben Cremer, a Nazarene pastor in Boise, ID, who wrote a viral Facebook post earlier this year lamenting the state of American Christianity and politics. Eric and Ben discuss his faith journey, the "identity crisis" of the church, and how to engage Millennials, Gen Z, and skeptics. To better understand, or go deeper with, some of the discussion topics, listen to our episodes on "Political Idolatry," "Love and Truth," and "Defining Deconstruction with David." The discussion also touches on "Christian Nationalism." On this episode of Backsliders, our special guest is Blake Chastain, writer, producer and host of the popular podcast #Exvangelical. Blake talks with us about his personal journey of deconstruction, how studying the Bible led him to become more socially and politically liberal, and why he decided to start his podcast where he interviews other people who have left Evangelicalism. Other fun topics we touch on include the book “The Heart of the Artist” that Blake had to read when he was on his church’s worship team, why the Christian practice of turning natural human behavior into deviancy is problematic, and why the religious right has been so powerful and effective. Chris Stroop and I connect online because we are both #EXvangelicals, which is a term coined by our mutual friend, Blake Chastain, who has a podcast by the same name. It means that evangelicalism is both a shaping influence of our lives and a system we have rejected. Chris has an academic background on Russian history and for now most well known for his writing and hashtag activism, which has been featured in many mainstream news outlets. Chris has been instrumental to me, particularly in lifting some blinders on the ways evangelicalism has controlled the narrative. Part of Chris’s mission, I think, is to help exvangelicals disrupt that narrative, so that we are well represented in the media, and subsequently, in everyday culture. The latest viral trending hashtag that Chris has started is especially relevant to Parenting Forward, it is #ExposeChristinSchools, and was started as a way to boost the stories of people who have been raised in Christian schools. Some stories that have been shared include purity culture teachings, alternative Christian facts on science and history, and political indoctrination. Chris unpacks the history of the Christian school and homeschooling movement and how deregulation of homeschooling from the State has proliferated rampant abuse of children. In this practice, you’re joining Alexis Francisco and Cicia Lee for the meditative experience of Centering Prayer. They describe it as a constant practice of letting go of factors we can’t control in order to get our egos out of the way and be able to show up well to our lives and our work. Origin: Centering Prayer practice is said to be created by Trappist monks in fairly recent history, and draws on a rich lineage in Christian mysticism, particularly in the catholic tradition in Europe through St. John of the Cross, and Teresa of Avila. Primary among these historical lineages is that of the Black tradition of the desert fathers and mothers, religious communities of African Christians who sought to build alternative communities outside of empire, who refused to be ruled and corrupted by the lies and compulsions of the world, and sought a lifestyle devoted to freedom in Christ, and practices to support that. Though this practice has a clear lineage and is deeply rooted in the Christian mystical tradition, and it is also influenced by Buddhist meditation and mindfulness practices. Practice instructions begin at around the 10 minute mark. The steps Alexis and Cicia share are: 1) Choose an anchor word for your practice.2) Settle into a relaxed position and take some deep breaths. Silently introduce your sacred word.3) When you notice yourself get pulled away by thinking, gently return to your sacred word as a gesture of consent to the presence of God.4) At the end of your time of prayer, rest in stillness for a few moments before transitioning to your next activity.
