Parker was found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession during a felony. He was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional five years. Cobb District Attorney Flynn D. Broady Jr. emphasized the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions and highlighted the severe consequences of resorting to lethal force instead of seeking help from law enforcement. Associate music director Brian Parks describes the instrument as unique and complex, comparing it to a spaceship. The inaugural concert will feature classic pieces alongside more contemporary tunes, aiming to make the organ accessible to all. The procurement of the organ involved extensive collaboration and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring its longevity. Parks emphasizes the art and science of maintaining the organ, highlighting the need for precise climate control to preserve its 3,300 pipes. Despite its challenges, Parks finds immense joy in playing the organ, conveying deep emotion through its music. The community looks forward to enjoying the sounds of the organ for generations to come. Here's How A packed meeting at the South Cobb Regional Library in Mableton introduced 19 commissions, authorities, and boards to the public, offering opportunities for community involvement. Mayor Michael Owens emphasized the volunteer-run nature of these groups, which cover a range of areas from planning and public arts to housing and cultural affairs. Residents were encouraged to reach out to their local council members to express interest in joining these boards. Some notable boards include those for planning, special events, public arts, and housing. Additionally, quasi-judicial boards like the ethics, alcohol review, and zoning appeals boards were introduced, along with committees for long-term planning, downtown development, citywide development, and tourism promotion. Interested individuals can find more information on the city's website and contact their council members for further guidance. STORY 7: High Court Decision Raises Questions Around Property Rights and Competition in Healthcare The Georgia Supreme Court revisited a dispute between Wellstar Windy Hill and Emory University Hospital Smyrna, both serving Cobb County, over Windy Hill's attempt to switch from long-term to short-term care. Emory contested this, arguing it violated Windy Hill's certificate of need. The case highlights conflicts over healthcare regulations and property rights. Windy Hill argues it's exempt due to its establishment predating the certificate of need laws. The Supreme Court's decision could impact future healthcare regulation disputes. This case underscores broader debates about certificate of need laws, with some advocating for repeal to foster competition while others argue it safeguards patient care. “What does ‘Distributing Power' look like for a congregation?” is a frequent question we get about our fourth adaptive muscle. Now we can say: listen to this interview with Mike Mather! Mike helps us make the connection between distributing power and abundance. When Mike and his congregation started actually living out their beliefs that everyone (both inside and outside of the church) has gifts, it changed their perspective–and their church–for the better. They began to look for the gifts their neighbors possessed instead of their needs. They shifted how they perceived their role in the community from being bringers of all good things to being connectors who bring people's gifts together for the good of the neighborhood. Mike is a powerful storyteller, we can't wait for you to hear this conversation! May his stories and lessons stick with you and inspire you to discover the gifts and power already at work in your neighbors and in your neighborhood. QUOTES “She didn't need training. She needed people who saw she had gifts and power. That was when things really shifted for me.” -Mike Mather [12:58] “I would say what we often talked about it as was ‘How do we join the power that God has present in the lives of our neighbors?'” -Mike Mather [30:19] TIMESTAMPS [00:00] Intro [00:55] What it means to distribute power [04:41] Meet Mike Mather [05:29] What Mike hopes people get out of his book [08:01] The pivot in his life [13:15] How that impacted how his church did ministry [20:12] The impact to Mike as a leader [29:22] It changed their job descriptions [30:38] Point to where the power is at work [32:38] Where he met resistance and/or obstacles [43:31] Outro RESOURCES & RELEVANT LINKS Read Mike Mather's book Having Nothing, Possessing Everything for more insights that inspire and equip leaders with very practical ideas for moving beyond buildings and into the streets. If you read some of the stuff I write or post, you may not think of me as a religious person. In some ways, I am not. I believe I was baptized Methodist, but as a kid I really only went to church on big events, or for weddings/funerals. It was not an active part of my life. I converted to Catholicism before marrying my ex. My mom was Catholic and my aunt is very Catholic so I had some context for it. That relationship did not long-term work out, and even after that conversion, I wouldn't say we were very religious or church-going. Since late 2017, when I first met Katie, I've been going consistently to First United Methodist in downtown Fort Worth. I've been thinking about faith more in that process as well. So, what follows here is a conversation with one of the senior pastors at that church, Lance. He is the pastor of “The Gathering” service that I attend, along with a bunch of my church friends. We taped this right before Easter, and we're actually going to start by talking about the repercussions of Easter not being in-person for most of us this year. There's a lot of faith and work and spirituality “wokeness” in here, so enjoy it. I'll say one final thing: a lot of times, I asked kinda three-part questions here and that might get irritating, but I promise you the conversation has some value. Let's roll.
Los Angeles’ First United Methodist is a church without walls. Rev. Mandy Sloan McDow describes how they protect the most vulnerable in their community.
My guest this week is Rev. Vance Rains. In these days of grieving and reflecting after the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Vance’s experiences are sadly timely. He was the pastor of First Church in Coral Springs, Florida, a community next to Parkland, Florida where the Stoneman Douglas High School shootings took place in 2018. Just this past July, he started as pastor of First United Methodist in Orlando, a church just down the street from Pulse, the nightclub where 49 people were killed by a shooting in 2016. Vance shares his own experiences from the Stoneman Douglas shootings and where we are as a country today. One note that we had this conversation before the El Paso and Dayton shootings. I hope these conversations are helpful for you. To learn more about Vance, you can go to his web site.

Marietta Stories | Crazy cool stories from the community builders of Marietta, Georgia
Beverly McAfee is my favorite interview. There I said it. She has a great combination of caring and hutzpah that is quite frankly, endearing. How did Marietta get a concert series, why does the First United Methodist have a park and replica of their first church, why is their a mentoring program at Marietta High School — you guessed it Beverly. She is the first to admit that she had a lot of help, but her way of getting things done is powerful. Enjoy our own Marietta gem, Beverly McAfee!
Preaching and music from First United Methodist Church of Evanston, IL. Pastor Bonny Roth preaching Seeds of Grace.
Preaching and music from First United Methodist Church of Evanston, IL. Rev. Dean Francis preaching Here I Am.

Threshing Floor. Live from New Room 2015. Chad and Joshua sit down with the Rev. Dr. Andrew Thompson, senior pastor of First United Methodist in Springdale, Arkansas. Andrew also holds a doctorate of Theology from Duke University. He has spent time in college ministry, local church ministry, teaching in seminary and is now the pastor of a large, vital congregation in Arkansas. Chad and Joshua have a conversation with Andrew about what it means to be a pastoral theologian and why it matters to carry your education into the pulpit. We also have a raucous good time with another Southern boy at the expense of Joshua. Andrew is also part of the podcast Behind the Sermon. It is an experiment in public theology in reference to the weekly preaching event. Make sure to check it out here.
