Today's episode features University of Kentucky cornerback Lonnie Johnson Jr. A crucial starter for last year’s Wildcat team, Johnson thrived as a safety in junior college before moving to corner for Kentucky. He brings that physicality to the cornerback position, as well as a knack for preventing big plays. His performance as a senior earned him a spot in the senior bowl, and a trip to the combine, where he was able to impress scouts and coaches. Johnson joins us on this week’s Phoning it In as he continues his journey to the NFL.
Todays episode features Boston College Cornerback, Hamp Cheevers. Despite not being heavily recruited it only took Cheevers a year to earn a starting role in the Eagles secondary. In his Junior year, He earned All-ACC First Team honors and led the nation in interceptions at Cornerback. He took some away from his draft prep to join us in this weeks Phoning It In.
Today's episode features Georgia Tech defensive end Anree Saint-Amour. A scheme versatile player, Saint-Amour played defensive end in both a 3-4 and 4-3 defense for the Yellow Jackets, breaking out during his senior season. His first step, length, and size make him a player that has his best football ahead of him. Today's episode features Marist College’s Juston Christian. A 4 year starter for the Red Foxes, Christian burst onto the scene as a true freshman, racking up over 800 yards of offense and 6 touchdowns. Christian displayed big play ability for the following 3 seasons, averaging 1000 yards and 9 touchdowns over that span, all while averaging 21 yards per reception. Christian, fresh off of his pro day at Buffalo, joined us on this week’s Phoning it In to discuss his draft journey so far.
Today's episode features University of Maryland tackle Derwin Gray. A 3 year starter for the Terps, Gray primarily played tackle, getting All Big 10 honorable mention in consecutive years. In a conference that sends elite offensive line talent from schools such as Wisconsin and Ohio State, this is no minor accomplishment. He also helped pave the way for record-breaking rushing performances, such Anthony McFarland setting Maryland’s freshman single-season rushing record. Seth and Nic close out the draft season with on of our favorite players in the draft. Obi Melifonwu is the most athletic Safety in the Draft and has impressed throughout the process. His game is something Defensive Coordinators will foam at the mouth for and he should go pretty early in the draft tonight...
Seth and Nic speak with Northwestern stud linebacker Anthony Walker Jr.. Aside from being one of the more complete linebackers on the field, Walker's leadership and heart set him apart from the pack. He has the accolades associated with a high round caliber player and hopes to be in that discussion this weekend.
Seth and Nic speak with World-Class speedster, Kevin Snead of Carson-Newman. His elite speed is something that almost the entire league has inquired about. Using it appropriately will determine how his career pans out. The most creative offensive coordinator is going to be able to have flexibility with Snead's athleticism but eventually finding a positional home for him will be key to his development.
Seth and Nic talk to UNLV defensive standout, Torry McTyer. Blowing away the Mountain West with his speed, McTyer was often avoided by the opposition. We speak about what he hopes to improve about his game and how he can see that improvement. His effortless looking athleticism will wow you when you watch his film.. but his aggressive nature is what will fire you up about his game.
Seth and Nic speak with stud Quarterback Dane Evans of Tulsa. Being one of the more prolific passers in recent history has not garnered as much attention as one would think. Despite all of this, Evans remains focused at the task at hand... Proving he belongs on an NFL roster. In one of the best interviews yet, Evans maintains his focus but seems to be enjoying the process all the same.
Seth and Nic speak with LA Tech Safety, Xavier Woods. being a part of the starting 11 for his entire career has helped shape him into one of the more complete safeties in this years DEEP Draft class. Being a hard hitting leader on the field has garnered him respect from teams. Look for Woods to be in the running for playing time early in his career.
Seth and Nic talk to Louisville Edge rusher, Devonte Fields. We discuss how mistakes in his past helped humble and mature him going forward. His appreciation to Louisville could easily be seen on Saturdays as he terrorized the opposing Quarterback.
Seth and Nic meet with the "Human Joystick" Tarik Cohen. Representing the MEAC, Cohen has been a prolific runner at the FCS level. He has impressed scouts during this interview process and will hear his name called on day 3 and it will be a steal.
Seth and Nic meet with offensive mainstay, David Sharpe of the Florida Gators. Aside from being a colossal lineman even for SEC standards, Sharpe is known for his leadership and his road grading run blocking. He explained his strengths and where he hopes to improve in this weeks Phoning It In.
Seth and Nic talk to one of the best receivers to ever come out of Washington St., Gabe Marks. His route running and his hands are some of the best in the draft but a box score doesn't show some of his other strong attributes... strong leadership and relentless blocking. When you put it all together you can see why Gabe Marks is one of the best.
Seth and Nic meet with Wyoming All-Time Leading Rusher, Brian Hill. Despite forgoing his final year of eligibility, Hill has left a lasting impression on his school and the entire conference. Hill's punishing running style and ability to be an every-down back will help him see the field early in his career. His approach to football would lead us to believe he will make an immediate impact.
Seth and Nic meet with Florida St. Guard Kareem Are. Being one of the more consistent players on the offensive line, Are has built a reputation for be the ultimate team player and example for what hard work and determination can bring a player.
Seth and Nic speak with Aaron Peck of Fresno St. A Wide Receiver riddled with talent and unfortunately injuries, Peck has responded in the best way he knows how... hard work and adaptivity. Adding over 15 pounds to his frame has helped generate some interest at Tight End from NFL Scouts. Something we discuss during the episode.
Seth and Nic meet with Cincinnati Quarterback, Gunner Kiel. Despite a turbulent beginning to his college career, Kiel has been working hard to show NFL teams he can adapt to a pro-style offense. Kiel has all the tools to succeed at the next level and is eager to show them off at his Pro Day.
