STEM Enrollment Growth: Online Labs Drive Student Retention

Changing Higher Ed

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 22, 2024 28:51

This episode features host Dr. Drumm McNaughton and guest Dr. Caitlin Runne-Janczy, Chief Academic Officer for Scientific Interactive, a company that provides hands-on and virtual science lab experiments to students. Drumm and Cait focus on the growing demand for online science lab courses, particularly in STEM fields. Cait discusses the results of a recent survey that found a significant increase in online lab enrollment and a corresponding decrease in on-campus enrollment. They also explore the challenges and opportunities of delivering quality online lab experiences, including safety considerations, lab setup, accreditation, and student learning outcomes. Cait highlights the importance of hands-on components in online labs and the potential for these courses to spark a passion for STEM beyond the individual student. Podcast Overview Some of the key insights and opportunities for higher education leaders who listen to this podcast: There is a growing demand for online science lab courses. Deans and department chairs report a greater than 70% increase in online lab enrollments and a corresponding 56% decrease in on-campus lab enrollments. 88% of students surveyed said it was important for them to have the opportunity to take an online science lab course, and 60% of those students would have enrolled elsewhere or not enrolled at all if an online lab option had not been available. Online science lab courses can be just as effective as on-campus courses if they include a hands-on component. Simulations have a place in the lab experience, but it must have some sort of hands-on element to really get students a comparable outcome to the campus counterpart. In the survey, 90% of faculty reported that students who take hands-on labs online have the knowledge and skills to continue in their degree progression. Online science lab courses can help institutions reach a broader range of students, including those who cannot attend on-campus classes due to work, family, or other obligations. This can help institutions grow their enrollment and retain more students. Online options also have a broader impact beyond just the individual student. For example, students who do lab kits at home with their families are expanding that love of science beyond just the individual student. Institutions need to be prepared to address the challenges of offering online science lab courses, such as ensuring student safety, providing adequate support to students, and meeting accreditation requirements. Safety is a key consideration for both students and institutions. Companies that provide lab kits typically cover liability insurance for the institution in case anything happens. Institutions need to provide adequate support to students who are taking online science lab courses, such as synchronous sessions, digital office hours, and digital lab partners. Accreditation bodies typically require online science lab courses to include a hands-on component to ensure that students have the transferable skills they need to continue in their degree program. Institutions should consider using online science lab courses as a way to improve student preparedness for on-campus lab courses. Students can do digital experiments before they get to campus so they can be familiar with the techniques and safety protocols that they will need to implement once they get to the lab. Institutions should partner with companies that have experience in developing and delivering online science lab courses. These companies can provide the expertise, resources, and support that institutions need to successfully offer these courses. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Growing demand for online science labs is creating urgency around digital transformation. Students are actively seeking these options and may choose other institutions that offer them. Building out online laboratory options is becoming a strategic imperative. Hands-on laboratory work remains essential for maintaining equivalency with on-campus experiences. While simulations play a role, physical experimentation must be part of online lab courses to ensure comparable learning outcomes. Online lab options offer a broader societal impact beyond individual student success. By making STEM education more accessible and visible, these courses can inspire interest in STEM fields among students' families, peers, and broader communities. Online science lab courses are a growing trend in higher education, and institutions that are prepared to embrace this trend will be well-positioned to meet the needs of their students and the demands of the 21st-century workforce. These are just some of the key insights and opportunities you will hear in this podcast—listen to the full episode for more.  Final Thoughts Accreditation is essential, and institutions must ensure that online labs meet the same standards as traditional labs. They need to understand the requirements of their accrediting bodies and have robust methods to assess and demonstrate student learning outcomes. Partnering with experienced companies can be beneficial, but institutions are ultimately responsible for meeting accreditation standards and ensuring quality. The idea of using virtual pre-labs to better prepare students for on-campus labs is promising and could improve student performance in both settings. Institutions need to approach online science labs thoughtfully, balancing innovation with academic rigor and ensuring that students receive a high-quality education. There's a 13-acre nature preserve at Marist College, where I teach environmental journalism, called Fern Tor. Most students don't know about it, so last month I took my class to explore the preserve and to illustrate that, when we go into the woods or on the river, we need to be alert for stories. What is the environment telling us? For example, since tor means rocky outcropping, will we see rocky outcroppings? (We did.) Why are those two trees dying? (Proximity to the train tracks.) Is the preserve large and healthy enough to support animals larger than squirrels? (Yes, judging from the wild turkeys.) Then we came across a corridor of towering white bushes. They were glorious, but the understory is darker. We were in the two-week annual window when Japanese knotweed bloom. It was easy to see why people imported them in the 19th century: They smelled heavenly. The plant was prized for its ability to grow up to 10 feet a year, creating quick privacy fences on gilded estates. But that rapid growth means that Japanese knotweed shades out native species, which soon die. The roots are strong enough to crack home foundations, and the stalks can rise through sidewalks. Cutting it back encourages the roots to send up more stalks. Even if dug up, the plant can reproduce from a single rhizome. That's a story. And here's another: How we talk about problematic plants can be problematic. Many scientists, researchers and journalists would like to change the language we use to discuss invasives. For instance, the preferred scientific name for the gypsy moth is now spongy moth, because gypsy is a slur for Romani people. Spongy moth was chosen because it describes the egg sacs the moths lay. That's becoming the pattern: Rename invasives for a distinguishing characteristic. The Asian Carp is now the Bighead Carp, the Asian Giant Hornet (nicknamed the "murder hornet" because they rip the heads off honeybees) is now the Northern Giant Hornet (because it's from northern Asia). Japanese knotweed is still Japanese knotweed. But, at a recent symposium of local scientists and researchers, we discussed what names could be used instead. Calling it "knotweed" doesn't work because there are other species with knotweed in their names. "Invasive knotweed" was the best we could come up with, but that isn't specific enough for scientific use. Journalists can change the language we use more easily than scientists. If we write about Japanese knotweed "eradicating" native species, or even the need to "fight" invasive species, we're establishing a narrative that anything that isn't from here is dangerous and needs to be destroyed. But not every species that came here only recently causes ecological problems; we use "non-native" to refer to them. Aggressive language also confers a negative agency to species, as if they came here with the express purpose of laying waste. It's not the plants' fault they're here, they were brought by people. The problem is us. Even "invasive" has negative connotations, but no one has been able to come up with a suitable replacement ("Colonizing species"?). What can we do? A scientist I interviewed years ago explained that the problem with invasive species is that they transform thriving and diverse ecosystems into monocultures, making them more vulnerable to outside threats. For an ecosystem, strength comes from diverse species mutually thriving and supporting each other. That's a story worth telling.

The wave against Biden is rapidly gaining momentum across six pivotal swing states, where it now outweighs the 'Never Trump' sentiment, according to recent polling data. This paradigm shift can be observed in likely voters, of whom 51% expressed an absolute decisiveness against voting for Biden, a sentiment only shared by 46% in relation to former President Donald Trump. This information was obtained through a poll carried out in May by The New York Times and Siena College. This is not an isolated incident, as the 'Never Biden' sentiment continues to surpass the 'Never Trump' stance in three consecutive polls spanning from November 2023 to April. This new trend highlights the growing reluctance among American voters to even consider casting their ballots in favor of Biden, a significant flip from the sentiments observed during the 2020 Presidential Election. Detailed polling indicates an increasingly notable shift, with Biden losing steam among demographic groups that have traditionally leaned Democratic. Among such key changes is the doubling of Trump's victory margin in Texas, drawing from the state's hefty 40 electoral votes for the upcoming election. A recent Marist College poll shows Republican Senator Ted Cruz leading by six points against his Democratic competitor, Representative Colin Allred, a critical race as the Republicans strive to regain control of the Senate in the forthcoming November's elections. Trump, back in 2020, won over Biden in Texas by roughly a 5.5-point margin, indicating the narrowest win for a Republican in this staunchly red state for almost a quarter of a century.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Weimar Republic is well-known for its gay rights movement and recent scholarship has demonstrated some of its contradictory elements. In his recent book entitled The Seduction of Youth: Print Culture and Homosexual Rights in the Weimar Republic (University of Toronto Press, 2020), Javier Samper Vendrell writes the first study to focus on the League for Human Rights and its leader, Friedrich Radszuweit. It uses his position at the center of the Weimar-era gay rights movement to tease out the diverging political strategies and contradictory tactics that distinguished the movement. By examining news articles and opinion pieces, as well as literary texts and photographs in the League's numerous pulp magazines for homosexuals, Vendrell reconstructs forgotten aspects of the history of same-sex desire and subjectivity. While recognizing the possibilities of liberal rights for sexual freedom during the Weimar Republic, the League's "respectability politics" failed in part because Radszuweit's own publications contributed to the idea that homosexual men were considered a threat to youth, doing little to change the views of the many people who believed in homosexual seduction – a homophobic trope that endured well into the twentieth century. Michael E. O'Sullivan is Professor of History at Marist College where he teaches courses about Modern Europe. He published Disruptive Power: Catholic Women, Miracles, and Politics in Modern Germany, 1918-1965 with University of Toronto Press in 2018. ANDRE BELIVEAU OF THE COMMONWEALTH FOUNDATION JOINS DAWN LIVE! Senior Manager of Energy Policy at the Commonwealth Foundation. - ANDRE JOINS TO BREAKDOWN THE EPA RULE THAT WILL HURT PA RESIDENTS, AND ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF FEDERAL OVERREACH...  EPA's Latest Carbon Emissions Rule Is a Raw Deal for PennsylvaniansNew federal regulation would devastate Pennsylvania's energy industry, increase electric bills, and undermine energy reliability. Harrisburg, Pa., April 26, 2024 — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) unilaterally issued a final rule establishing draconian carbon dioxide emission standards, targeting coal and new natural gas power plants. The rule, submitted this week to the Federal Register, would require 90 percent carbon capture for power-generating facilities—a change that will drastically raise Pennsylvanians' electricity costs and destroy the state's natural gas industry. Commonwealth Foundation Senior Manager of Energy Policy André Béliveau issued the following statement in response: “The EPA's final rule is another excessive radical scheme to emerge from the current administration with sweeping federal overreach." Yet another consequence of policies imposed by unelected bureaucrats, the rule aims to effectively shut down the fossil fuel industry. “Pennsylvanians deserve access to affordable and reliable energy, but the EPA's decision threatens their ability to keep the lights on and properly heat their homes. Alongside Governor Shapiro's harmful Pennsylvania Climate Emissions Reduction Act (PACER) and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), this EPA rule will wreak havoc on the state's economy. “The Keystone State is the nation's second-largest natural gas producer and the largest energy exporter. As such, Pennsylvania is uniquely vulnerable to bad energy policies intended to undermine our abundant natural gas resources. Whether those policies come from Harrisburg or Washington, DC, the impact is the same: our families and businesses pay the price. “Natural gas accounts for nearly 60 percent of Pennsylvania's electricity generation—and despite what progressives would have you believe, natural gas has reduced our state's overall emissions." Data from the Independent Fiscal Office (IFO) shows that, from 2022 to 2023, Pennsylvania successfully reduced CO2 emissions by 10.8 percent year-over-year—the largest decrease since the 1990s. All the while producing even more reliable power. How? Transitioning from coal to natural gas for power. The EPA's rule threatens to upend this positive trend and artificially shift the market toward more unreliable sources. “Policymakers should remove regulatory barriers preventing our energy industry from continuing to provide reliable, increasingly clean power. It shouldn't hamstring our state with onerous, job-killing regulations. Additionally, our congressional delegation should advance the REINS Act, a policy supported by 79 percent of Pennsylvania voters that would boost accountability and transparency in the Federal regulatory process. “Pennsylvania must be free to develop the optimal mix of energy sources at the lowest possible cost while ensuring reliability and investing in innovation. That is the path to prosperity.” André Béliveau is the Senior Manager of Energy Policy at the Commonwealth Foundation. André has extensive public policy experience. His work includes energy policy, elections law, redistricting, separation of powers, Second Amendment policy, regulatory reform, economic policy, and various elements of social policy. He is a member of the American Enterprise Institute Leadership Network and an alumnus of the State Policy Network Generation Liberty Fellowship and the E.A. Morris Fellowship for Emerging Leaders. He holds an MA in Government with an honors thesis from Johns Hopkins University and a BA cum laude in History from Marist College. His academic expertise spans various topics, including American political development, American conservatism, political thought and history, governance, social and cultural studies, and intellectual history. Prior to joining the Commonwealth Foundation, André worked for the National Taxpayers Union Foundation as its policy and outreach manager, as a policy advisor in the North Carolina General Assembly, and for the John Locke Foundation as the strategic projects and government affairs manager—where he concurrently serves as a visiting fellow. Outside his professional life, André enjoys competition shooting, traveling, hiking, camping, antiquing, playing the bagpipes, and cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes. André Béliveau, Commonwealth Foundation's senior manager of energy policy JOINS DAWN LIVE! ANDRE BREAKSDOWN THE LATEST COMMONWEALTH SURVEY WITH PA RESIDENTS.. A significant majority of Pennsylvania voters (80 percent) say their household energy bills have increased over the past two years, including 34 percent who say their bills have increased “a lot,” according to a new Commonwealth Foundation poll released yesterday. The statewide survey investigated voters' attitudes toward various state and federal energy issues, finding that most Pennsylvanians (67 percent) say ensuring affordable energy is a higher priority than combatting climate change (33 percent). Key findings from the poll include: ·       Rising Energy Costs Are Top Voter Concern: Eight in 10 voters say their household energy bills have increased over the past two years, and more than two-thirds (70 percent) say they're concerned about affording their family's energy needs. Rising energy costs (63 percent) top the list as the most prominent environmental issue in Pennsylvania. ·       Energy Affordability a Critical Policy Priority: Energy affordability remains a top priority ahead of the November elections, with 81 percent saying it is an important factor in deciding which candidates to support and 34 percent saying it is very important. Sixty percent are concerned “about the reliability of the Pennsylvania electricity grid and the possibility of blackouts.” ·       Pennsylvanians Want Candidates Focused on Lower Costs: A 59 percent majority want candidates committed to lowering energy costs and using natural resources, compared to 41 percent who prioritize environmental protection. ·       RGGI Opposition Grows after Cost Details: Only 22 percent initially supported the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) carbon tax. After learning that RGGI would raise electricity bills by 30 percent, a majority (63 percent) of those who initially supported or were undecided about RGGI said they would be less likely to support the initiative. ·       No Appetite for Climate Change Costs: Two-thirds (67 percent) of Pennsylvanians are unwilling to pay to combat climate change. “Pennsylvania voters have made it clear they prioritize energy affordability and reliability over climate alarmism,” said André Béliveau, Commonwealth Foundation's senior manager of energy policy. “Likewise, Pennsylvanians overwhelmingly support economic freedom and oppose excessive government regulations and red tape.” Andre Beliveau has extensive public policy experience.  Prior to joining the Commonwealth Foundation, André worked for the National Taxpayers Union Foundation as its policy and outreach manager, as a policy advisor in the North Carolina General Assembly, and for the John Locke Foundation as the strategic projects and government affairs manager.  He holds an MA in Government with an honors thesis from Johns Hopkins University and a BA cum laude in History from Marist College.

When it comes to writing, there is so much happening behind the scenes. It is so much more than sitting down, grabbing a pencil, and putting words on paper. In today's episode, we'll explore the challenges students face when it comes to writing. From motor skills to executive functioning, today's guest explains the complexities of the writing process.  Shanna Trombetta is an Educational Therapist and she joins the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast to help us better understand not only the writing process and the challenges students face, but also ways we can support struggling students at home and in the classroom. She shares practical strategies and insights to empower parents and educators in guiding children through the whirlwind of creativity, skill, and determination that is writing.   Show Notes: [3:16] - A lot of learners who come into Shanna's practice struggle with writing. [4:24] - Shanna describes some of the things that are commonly a struggle when it comes to writing. There's so much happening at one time. [5:39] - It is common for students to have a lot of great ideas, but the mechanics of writing hold them up, and they wind up not writing anything. [7:32] - One way to support kids with writing is by providing them with a structure. [9:37] - People who don't struggle with executive functioning can typically create their own structure. But many kids need to be shown how to organize their information. [11:24] - When she works with students, Shanna helps them develop and use tools. [13:08] - What is background knowledge and why is it important for writing? [15:01] - Shanna describes writing around themes to help with structure. [16:57] - Chunking is a great strategy that helps students take one step at a time. [19:01] - Keeping a checklist as they write is another tool that can alleviate the stress of keeping track of things in their mind. [21:00] - Assessment data is really helpful for Shanna so she knows to target some of the spelling patterns that are a challenge for a student. [23:16] - So often students know what they want to write about. Strategies to get the information out are not “cheating.” [26:22] - Writing is an area where many students experience stress. Make it fun. [28:30] - While struggling, it is hard to remain motivated. Shanna shares some ways to keep students positive while they're learning.   About Our Guest: Shanna Trombetta is an Educational Therapist affiliated with the Association of Educational Therapists, dedicated to serving the community of Los Angeles. The poll, which the Knights conducted with Marist Institute for Public Opinion at Marist College, found that 66% of Americans believe that “limits should be placed on when abortion is allowed” and only 33% believe that “abortion should be allowed without any limits” when given the two options. Respondents who labeled themselves pro-life were more likely to support limits on abortion, with 91% choosing that answer. Among respondents who said they were pro-choice, 48% still believed there should be some limits on abortion. About 84% of Republicans supported some limits on abortion, as did 49% of Democrats and 66% of independents. Since the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, more than 20 states have imposed abortion restrictions, which includes more than a dozen states prohibiting abortion in almost all circumstances. Several other states, meanwhile, have moved to expand access to abortion in the wake of Roe's repeal. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256572/knights-of-columbus-poll-two-thirds-of-americans-support-some-abortion-restrictions After nearly 20 years without a cathedral, the Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin, announced on Wednesday that the Holy See approved one of its parishes to become a new cathedral site. Bishop Donald Hying selected a local parish, Saint Bernard, to be the future cathedral parish of the Diocese of Madison. An arson fire destroyed the diocese's cathedral, Saint Raphael Cathedral Parish, in March 2005. Saint Raphael was designated a cathedral when Madison was made a diocese in 1946, with the cornerstone of the parish having been laid in 1854. Since the arson, local parishes have taken turns hosting important events. With Saint Bernard's as the newly established cathedral, the diocese will be able to host priestly ordinations, the annual chrism Mass, and other events. Saint Bernard Church is currently being renovated before its elevation to cathedral status. The diocese expects the remodeled cathedral parish to be ready by late summer or early fall of 2025. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256569/vatican-approves-new-cathedral-for-diocese-of-madison Today, the Church celebrates Saint Canutus, King of Denmark, who succeeded his elder brother Harold on the throne of Denmark in the year 1080. Amid the glory of his victories he humbly prostrated himself at the foot of the crucifix, laying there his diadem, and offering himself and his kingdom to the King of kings. The justice of Saint Canutus as sovereign was well known. His charity and tenderness towards his subjects made him study all possible ways to make them a happy people. During a rebellion in his kingdom, the king was surprised at church by the rebels. He confessed his sins and received Holy Communion. Stretching out his arms before the altar, he was struck down on his knees by the enemies of his Christian reign. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-canutus-king-of-denmark-121

Denise received her BA in Criminal Justice from Moravian College, a MA from Marist College in Psychology, and her doctorate from Columbia University on Higher and Adult Education. What does the United States Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action mean for higher education? To put it in the most basic terms possible, race is no longer a factor in admissions. At the center of this decision, were two court cases, Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina, which have changed the direction of admissions in the United States. Advocates across the country have expressed concern about representation and diversity on college campuses and in several fields, such as STEM, in the coming years.Learn more about CITI Program: https://about.citiprogram.org/References: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/applying/articles/how-does-affirmative-action-affect-college-admissions https://www.brookings.edu/articles/how-will-the-supreme-courts-affirmative-action-ruling-affect-college-admissions/
