[We mourn the passing of legendary sports broadcaster John Sterling with an ARCHIVE RE-RELEASE of our memorable conversation from 2019.] + + +  Legendary New York Yankees baseball play-by-play man John Sterling joins host Tim Hanlon for a cavalcade of career memories from his 50+ year journey in sports broadcasting – including a treasure trove of stops along the way with previously incarnated or otherwise defunct teams (and leagues). Now celebrating his 30th consecutive season with the Bronx Bombers, Sterling's unique vocal stylings have become synonymous with some of the Yankees' most signature moments during that time – including the team's dominant run of American League and World Series championships across the late 1990s and much of the 2000s.  The path to becoming one of baseball's marquee team broadcasters was far from direct, however, and we (naturally) obsess over some of Sterling's more memorable "forgotten" gigs along the way, including: Falling into radio play-by-play with the NBA Baltimore Bullets as a late fill-in for Jim Karvellas; Becoming the almost-voice of the ABA Washington Caps (until a hasty move to Virginia to become the Squires); Hustling to secure radio rights to the upstart WHA New York Raiders for Gotham's talk powerhouse WMCA - and the irony of later calling games for the NHL Islanders; The highs of the ABA New York, and lows of the NBA New Jersey Nets; "Phoning it in" for the World Football League's short-lived New York Stars; AND The ahead-of-its-time Enterprise Sports Radio Network. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY SPONSOR THANKS:  Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/

Every few weeks, a Trump administration official comes up with an insane plan that would devastate some American industry, region, or demographic. Maybe an Undersecretary of the Interior decides that aluminum is "woke" and should be banned. They circulate a draft order saying it will be illegal for US companies to use aluminum, starting in two weeks, Thank You For Your Attention To This Matter. Next begins a frantic scramble on the parts of everyone affected, trying to make them back down. Industry lobbies, think tanks, and public intellectuals exchange frantic emails, starting with "They said WHAT?", progressing on to "Oh God we are so fucked", and occasionally ending in some kind of plan. Sending letters. Phoning members of Congress. Calling up that one lobbyist who had a fancy dinner with Trump a year ago and is still riding that high to claim he has vast administration influence. I've been on the periphery of a handful of these campaigns, usually in medicine or AI. The common thread is that protests by liberals rarely work. The Trump administration loves offending liberals! If every Democratic member of Congress condemns the plan to ban aluminum, that just proves that aluminum really was "woke", and makes them want to do it more. What works, sometimes, is objections/protests from Republicans and Trump supporters. These are hard to get. Trump supporters might support the insane plan. Even if they don't, they might be nervous to speak up or appear disloyal. You've got to find someone who's supported Trump until now, built up a reputation for loyalty, but this one time they finally snap and cash in some of their favors and agree to speak out. Sometimes it's because they're an aluminum magnate themselves and this would destroy their business. Other times they're just a think tank guy or influencer who happens to be really knowledgeable on this one issue and willing to take a stand on it. By such people is the world preserved. https://readscottalexander.com/posts/acx-support-your-local-collaborator

Phoning it in Conspiracy (2/19/26)

The “phoning it in conspiracy” is more of an observation. Have you noticed that media, entertainment, electronics, conspiracies, and food, etc. — and the commentary of and on such things — have gotten increasingly lazy? Short videos that grab attention or clickbait content is largely driven by algorithms and advertising but who authorizes it? We do. The public is responsible. We do not demand quality or context. In fact, we demand the opposite. Most just phone it in now, because it's easier. Have you also noticed that a plethora of once fringe topics have become popular? But those interested in such things for longer than “recently” are noticing that the stories have been tweaked just a little bit as to destroy the reality they contained. Reality is a good word to use here, too, because while the general public is embracing conspiracies thinking they've broken the programming of a dream state, they are actually slipping further into a coma. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. The Stephen King celebration continues! This month, The Filmlosophers—Hosts Eddie and Spencer, and Intern Manager/Managing Intern Amy—take on another of the King of Horror's lesser-celebrated works: his 2016 film adaptation, "Cell". The crew will dissect this unique take on a technological apocalypse, exploring how the film attempts to translate King's commentary on our phone-obsessed world to the big screen. They'll break down the performances, the production, and what makes this film a "fascinating" footnote in the King cinematic universe. Is it a misunderstood gem or a cautionary tale of a missed opportunity? Adding a truly odd twist to the episode, Spencer and Amy will recount a bizarre outing to a local historic theater where they joined a surprisingly lively (and rowdy) showing of the vampiric cult classic, "New Moon". They'll share stories of the strange audience participation and ponder the bizarre phenomenon of a film's second life as a communal, albeit ironic, experience. Join The Filmlosophers for a discussion that's part King deep dive and part nostalgic, comedic look at a theatrical event unlike any other. So pull up a chair, grab your popcorn, and tune in to this week's “cell-tastic” episode of The Filmlosophers!

Plus, one of America's two great newspapers tracks down a lost cat that could swing the election, or could have if she were not "lost" but "lunch." Tom Brady was asked for his top five current quarterbacks in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers is on his list at number five. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with Cleveland beating the Yankees in the longest game of the year. The Mets also lost, and like the Yankees, had some problems in the field. We heard from Malik Nabers who was on with Evan and Tiki yesterday. Brian Flores responded to the criticism he received from Tua. Shannon Sharpe and Ochocinco discussed it as well. The Moment of The Day involves Brandon Tierney, a nicely timed Eddie drop, and Boomer not being able to do his read because he was laughing too hard. In the final segment of the show, we went looking for Brandon Tierney but he's not here today. Gio said we'll find out why in the first segment of the solo Sal show today at 10am.
