For Jason Mohns, the Sun Devils' Playoff run of 2024 was extra gratifying. Sure, his tight ends produced an All-Big 12 selection and were an integral part of the offense's success. But beyond that, Mohns—an ASU grad, a son of a former ASU coach, and Valley high school coaching legend—was a key part of the group that finally activated the Valley. With a deep group of tight ends in his room, 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting follow-up. On this episode, Jason and I discuss reigniting Sun Devil Nation, the good reason why spelling doesn't matter as much as it did, the 2025 tight ends, strengthening local recruiting relationships, and more.

Ryder also got it done in the classroom, as he was valedictorian of his high school class that included 273 students in all. Now at UNI, Ryder is putting his talent on display at the collegiate level. He was a Big 12 champ last year and made the round of 12 at the NCAA tournament. And of course, he was first team academic All-Big 12. Currently in his RS sophomore year, Ryder is rolling into the NCAA tournament in a wide-open 157-pound weight class. Success starts in the trenches, and the Sun Devils' turnaround along the offensive line was a major factor in their success in 2024. With four starters back for 2025, the line looks to once again be a team strength. But not everyone will be back in their old spots, as Ben Coleman will be sliding over from left guard to center to replace All-Big 12 selection Leif Fautanu. After missing his first year in Tempe due to injury, Ben returned to the lineup last year and put together a standout season. No matter where he lines up this fall, Ben will be a key player on the field and an important leader off of it. On this episode, Ben and I discuss the keys to ASU's success, why he bypassed the NFL Draft for another year in Tempe, his evolving leadership role, activating the Valley,
It was only appropriate that ASU's victory in the Big 12 championship game took place in Texas, as the Texas-to-Tempe movement has been such a critical factor in the Sun Devils' turnaround. One of the first players that arrive through that movement has developed into one of the key pieces of Arizona State's success. Defensive tackle C.J. Fite once committed to ASU under the prior staff, decommitted after the coaching change, but then recommitted once he saw the vision Kenny Dillingham planned to bring. In his second year, Fite blossomed into an All-Big 12 selection and a member of the Pat Tillman Leadership Council. Now an upperclassmen, bigger things are ahead. On this episode, we discuss his growth as a leader, winning the title in his home state, how the team can keep its edge, the most fashionable Sun Devil, and much more.
Sure, the 2024 Sun Devils had talented players. But what truly elevated the team was their heart. Their grit. Their ability to overcome adversity. Much of that stemmed from the team's leadership, and among the most impactful voices in that locker room was Xavion Alford. You likely know his story by now. After coming to ASU as a transfer, he and Jake Smith were unjustly ruled ineligible by the NCAA for the 2023 season. But he kept a positive attitude, and when he finally took the field last year, he put together a terrific season that earned him first-team All-Big 12 honors. Bypassing the NFL Draft, Xavion is back and ready to lead the Devils on another title run. On this episode, we discuss the impact and evolution of his leadership, how he won't let the team get complacent, the team's young DBs, his go to Mexican food spots, and much more.
The latest Past Our Prime podcast takes us to the heartland and the beginning of the changing of the guard in college basketball. 1975 would be the last season for John Wooden and his UCLA dominance, and the Indiana Hoosiers were set to claim their spot atop the college basketball world. They would go 31-1 in '75 and follow that up in 1976 with a perfect 32-0 and the first National Championship for Bobby Knight. In 1975, the Hoosiers had 4 All Big-10 players in Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Scott May and Steve Green... and yet on the cover of that February 3rd issue 50 years ago was none other than John Laskowski... The Super Sub. The senior guard from South Bend was the first guy off the bench for Coach Knight and a main reason for the teams success. Half a century later, he still can't believe he was the guy on the cover of SI. But Laskowski was emblematic of what his coach was preaching. A team-first attitude where you left your ego at the door and went to work doing whatever was needed to win. And they won a lot... 37 consecutive Big-10 wins in fact, still the most ever in conference play... by a large margin. Laskowski went on to play in the NBA, and then was an analyst for Hoosiers basketball for years and he says much of that is because of the legendary Knight. Much more than just a coach to Laskowski, Bobby Knight was a mentor and an impactful man for the rest of his life until his death in 2023. He negotiated Laskowski's NBA deal with the Bulls, helped him get his TV job for IU and got him into the movie Blue Chips starring Nick Nolte. Laz tells us about a side of The General we rarely saw... He tells us about an assistant on that team that went on to become the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history... and he tells us about how Notre Dame rescinded their scholarship offer to him and how devastating that was to him before it turned into a blessing of a lifetime. It's a great talk with a great guy that was the first one off the bench for Coach Knight and on the cover of SI in 50 years ago today but in the POP starting lineup. The spring transfer portal window is closed, but there's still drama. Oklahoma landed one of the most sought-after players in the spring window on Thursday when TCU transfer Damonic Williams committed. Williams started every game in his two seasons at TCU and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 player in 2023. Few defensive linemen with this resume had entered the portal this spring, and a lot of schools wanted Williams. It came down to Oklahoma and Texas. (0:00-9:09) Intro - Transfer Portal News (9:10-23:13) Pete Nakos Joins to Break down Transfer Portal (23:14-29:57) NCAA Antitrust Settlement Case, Future of CFB (29:58-32:56) Texas A&M Introduction (32:57-1:05:12) Billy Liucci from Tex Ags joins (1:05:13-1:06:47) Conclusion - Have a great weekend! On3's Pete Nakos breaks down that decision as well as the ongoing recruitment of Michigan State transfer defensive lineman Simeon Barrow, who told Pete on Thursday that he might decide Friday from a group that includes LSU, Missouri and Miami. Plus, Oklahoma backup QB General Booty is the highest ranking player to ever enter the transfer portal. Next, Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com joins the show to talk about a quiet spring in College Station as new coach Mike Elko works to shape a roster that probably isn't as loaded as we'd think given Texas A&M's recruiting rankings of the past few years. In fact, the situation Elko finds himself in now is eerily reminiscent of the one Steve Sarkisian took over at Texas in 2021. But with QB Conner Weigman working his way back toward 100 percent, transfer Nic Scourton coming off the edge and an SEC schedule that isn't as tough as the one some other teams got, the Aggies might be a surprise come fall. Locked On Big 12 - Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast
Iowa State's journey came to an abrupt halt despite their dominance in the Big 12 Tournament and early NCAA Tournament victories. Illinois stormed ahead with a 13-point lead, but the Cyclones rallied fiercely in the second half, keeping the game tense.Throughout the game, Iowa State had multiple opportunities to level or surpass the score, but the Illini consistently denied them, prolonging Iowa State's Elite Eight absence to 24 years.Curtis Jones led the charge for Iowa State with 26 points, closely followed by Keshon Gilbert with 14 points, while Tre King contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Despite shooting 39% from the field and sinking 6-of-13 three-pointers, Iowa State fell short.Illinois managed a 42% field goal rate and committed only 12 turnovers, yet their struggles from the free-throw line (15-of-29) allowed Iowa State to stay within reach. This defeat marked the end of one of Iowa State's most prosperous seasons, where they emerged as Big 12 runners-up, securing their best finish since 2015, and clinched their sixth Big 12 Tournament championship in program history, with five titles in the last decade. The potential return of key players like junior Tamin Lipsey, who earned All-Big 12 honors, sophomore Milan Momcilovic, possibly garnering NBA Draft attention, and the expected fifth-year participation of reliable shooter Curtis Jones, bodes well for the Cyclones' future.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!ManscapedGet 20% Off and Free Shipping with the code LOCKEDON at Manscaped.com.Bettor TogetherDownload the Bettor Together DFS app now from the app store, and sign-up using promocode LOCKEDON for a chance to win your share of over $1,000 in cash prizes. The BYU Cougars are the fifth-seed at the Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament this week and Jake Hatch says we should not discount the accomplishments Mark Pope and the BYU men's basketball program made this season considering the level(s) they stepped up in with Brigham Young University's entrance into the Big 12 Conference.Jake then celebrated BYU basketball star Jaxson Robinson's being named the Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year along with his being named to the All-Big 12 Honorable Mention team alongside Dallin Hall, Spencer Johnson and Foussenyi Traore but also questioning why Robinson was on an All-Big 12 Team and Aly Khalifa being snubbed of honors all together. Finally, the show wrapped up with Jake's notes from BYU football's fifth spring practice Friday as true freshmen like Ephraim Asiata and Ryner Swanson make names for themselves and the offensive and defensive lines show equal parts brilliance and that work still needs to be done along with weekend recaps for BYU baseball, softball and men's volleyball. Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast On Baylor Bears Football & Basketball
It was a tough weekend for Baylor basketball, as both the men's and women's teams let games slip away late on Saturday. The men came back from 16 down against Texas Tech to take a lead in the second half, before falling apart and losing by 10. The women, on the other hand, had what felt like a commanding lead against Iowa State in the Big 12 tournament quarterfinals, leading by 6 with 3:09 to play. The Bears shot 3-24 in the fourth quarter and the Cyclones ended the game on a 12-1 run, but Nicki Collen is confident in her team. The Big 12 announced their postseason awards, with Ja'Kobe Walter earning Freshman of the Year honors and three Bears making All-Big 12 teams (Walter, RayJ Dennis and Jalen Bridges.) Yves Missi and Langston Love were recognized as honorable mentions. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
