The Lakers, playing in their first ever In-Season Tournament quarterfinal, had a lot to think about Tuesday at the Crypt. There's the chance to punch a ticket to Vegas and a semi-final matchup against the Pelicans - something guys are a lot more into than most fans/media anticipated. There was the significance of a LeBron James/Kevin Durant matchup on national TV, something we haven't had nearly enough of over the last few years, and something that definitionally can't happen that much longer. And there was the chance for the Lakers to clinch the season series against Phoenix, which could become very valuable later in the year. Turns out, all of that was in play. The game had a playoff intensity, and after James noted that the team is taking the opportunity to play for something, because the opportunity is there. You have a chance to compete, go compete. James (31/8/11/5) vs. Durant (31/7/4) absolutely lived up to the hype. And the Lakers got that potentially meaningful win, 106-103. There was a ton for Lakers fans to like about this one, but beyond James (and clutch shooting from Austin Reaves, and a big first half from Anthony Davis) what kept the Lakers on top was their defense. Not coincidentally, it was a game where Darvin Ham had as full a complement of players as he'll get for a while (no clue when Gabe Vincent comes back). But the Lakers now have wings. So many wings. Wings Ham can deploy in different situations against different lineups, in combinations that shade a little towards offense, or more heavily to defense. He has real optionality, which is all coaches want. How he experiments with what's available to him over the next couple of weeks will be interesting to watch. Meanwhile, did the refs blow a critical call late in favor of the Lakers? Suns fans probably believe so, but if that's the case, the Lakers would have a gripe, too. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: VEGAS, BABY! The Lakers beat Phoenix, earn a ticket to Las Vegas. SEGMENT 2: LeBron was fantastic, the Lakers defense was also fantastic-er. (Or at the least, in a fantastic tie with LBJ.) SEGMENT 3: Reaves with a clutch shot. Defensive combos for Darvin. The Lakers had an opportunity to give themselves something to be thankful for today, but in the end... no. They lose to the Mavericks at the Crypt, 104-101. After entering the fourth quarter down 20, the Lakers shut down the Mavericks offense almost completely, managing not only to eat up the deficit but actually take a lead with a little more than a minute to play. At that point, though, it wasn't a comeback that fell short, it was a lead that they lost down the stretch. And it was thanks to missed free throws (four of them in the last four-plus minutes), a bad turnover from LeBron (after great play in the rest of the quarter) and a really bad defensive mistake from Austin Reaves, leaving Kyrie Irving just a little too open for three. (Reaves, like LeBron, was to that point a huge reason the Lakers had a chance to win.) So in the end, it was a missed opportunity. One the Lakers could have used to give themselves a little breathing room ahead of a challenging road trip. And more than that, the Lakers just need to start winning games against decent teams when the opportunities are there. And at home, with a lead late? Close that out. And at least on Wednesday, Darvin Ham's focus on the spirit and heart of the squad to fight back in the fourth fell flat. Everyone knows the team doesn't quit on games. How about not falling behind in every first quarter? Or grabbing a rebound? Or a 50/50 ball? Meanwhile, Max Christie started for an injured Cam Reddish. How did he do? And should Ham have called timeout heading into that last full possession for the Lakers? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose a very, very frustrating game on Wednesday night. SEGMENT 2: This was a missed opportunity, and the Lakers have to be careful not to let too many of these slip by. SEGMENT 3: Should Ham have used a TO down the stretch? Lakers 3-0 in NBA Tournament
The Locked On Lakers YouTube page is a great place to communicate with other Lakers fans and the hosts of the show, and it was the source of today's discussion. Does the media protect Austin Reaves? More than a few viewers have noted the difference in how he's treated compared to, say, D'Angelo Russell, believing that Reaves doesn't get enough criticism when he underperforms, whether on this show or across the basketball media landscape more broadly. Is that true? Probably, at least to some degree. But what accounts for it? Certainly the Reaves Story (moppy haired, undrafted, relatively unathletic looking white dude from rural Arkansas ascends RAPIDLY to national team status, Taylor Swift rumors and a new contract) contributes. He's an easy guy to root for. Insanely competitive, works hard, etc. But at the same time, does the story (and his skin color) provide more of a shield than it should? What about the sense that he's "found money?" That there's still some residual sense that the good stuff can be accentuated while the bad stuff is brushed off, because someone with his background isn't supposed to provide anything positive at all, really. Meanwhile, Russell, who (as has been noted on this show, repeatedly) has outplayed Reaves significantly this year, gets hammered by fans every time the Lakers lose and/or he turns the ball over. And what about rotations? Does Darvin Ham give Rui Hachimura the minutes he deserves? What might explain an excess of bench time, even while he tends to perform well? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Does Austin Reaves get enough criticism when he doesn't play well? SEGMENT 2: Does the media protect Reaves? If so, why? The three game win streak is over, and in relatively embarrassing fashion. The Lakers lost to the Kings Wednesday night at the Crypt by 15 in a game that wasn't that close, really. Final score, 125-110, as the Lakers fell back into all the habits fans hoped they had dropped in Tuesday's win. Bad first quarter putting themselves deep in a hole? Check. Too many turnovers? Cheeeeeeeeck, check, check. 23 in total. So much check. Problems on the defensive glass? Check. But one thing they thought they were past? A terrible game from Anthony Davis. Because that, for the first time since the season opener, was a big ol' check. Davis himself said as much, even while acknowledging (when prompted and asked about it specifically) that his hip/adductor muscle is still bugging him. He definitely looked uncomfortable, but bottom line? Davis was bad. Offensively, he was a non-entity. Defensively, four blocks are misleading, because Domantis Sabonis had his way with Davis all night. All players, even superstars, have off nights. But the issue with Davis is that his worst games seem to have a floor that is much lower than other bad games from great players. And the Lakers can't have it. Meanwhile, what's up with Austin Reaves? He seems to have moved past the stretch of just abjectly awful play on a personal level, but Wednesday was an example of how moving to the wider team context, he's still not on the same page as his teammates often enough. Maybe the league is continuing to adjust to Reaves, maybe Reaves is pressing, maybe it's just a matter of reps. Maybe all of it. But for the time being, Reaves as floor general isn't working as efficiently as the Lakers want/need. Something to watch. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers were incredibly careless on Wednesday and paid the price. SEGMENT 2: AD was really bad. What was going on? SEGMENT 3: What's off about the rhythm of Reaves as a floor general? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Betterhelp This episode is sponsored by Betterhelp. The Lakers have played with multiple lineups and juggled multiple players in and out of the lineup thanks to wide range of injuries. But one guy that's been missed, and has proven his value by his absence, is Jared Vanderbilt. And good news! The Lakers said Monday that Vanderbilt's heel injury has healed to the point he can now resume basketball activities and ramp up to a return to game action. How long will that take? Nobody knows! The Lakers didn't say. But while fans surely would have loved a little more info, what the team did say certainly beats the alternative -- that he's still not able to do stuff. So while it could be another week or so before Vanderbilt is available, it's not too early to think about the impact he'll have on the rotation once he's back. For starters, he'll likely eat into some of the available minutes for Cam Reddish, who played excellent basketball in LA's consecutive victories over the weekend. (Reddish, by the way, was nominated for the Western Conference Player of the Week Award, as was Anthony Davis. He didn't win, but a nice nod nonetheless.) What could his return mean for the backcourt rotation of Austin Reaves and D'Angelo Russell, who were a very, very successful combination last season, but have been deep underwater in net rating as a combo this season. Could Vando's return change that dynamic? Or is part of the problem that Dennis Schroder is in Toronto? Could Gabe Vincent's return make a difference, there? Meanwhile, the Lakers have a critical game tonight against the Grizzlies at home, who have struggled mightily and are banged up in ways that make the Lakers look like a paragon of good health and continuity. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers get good news about Jared Vanderbilt. SEGMENT 2: How Vanderbilt's return could impact the rotation. Plus, LeBron in context and a nice nod for Cam Reddish. SEGMENT 3: A big game vs. Memphis. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Betterhelp This episode is sponsored by Betterhelp. Then, more on the games, the new-look 4th line with McMann in for Reaves and the third line getting back on track with Domi at centre. Later, with Nikita Zadorov requesting a trade following the game on Friday, they discuss who the Leafs should target via trade and what it might cost. Finally, a chat on the Leafs' trip to Stockholm and how the extended time off will impact them (38:32).The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
Senior Managing Editor of The Athletic NHL James Mirtle joins OverDrive to discuss what comes next for John Klingberg after his disastrous start to the season, whether the Leafs will pursue serious upgrades on the blue line at some point this season, and how Ryan Reaves fits on the team given his limited role.
It has been a tough go for the Lakers in the early going of the 2023-24 NBA season, no question. Huge chunks of the rotation have either been in and out of the lineup, or in the case of Gabe Vincent and Jared Vanderbilt, basically out. Austin Reaves got off to a terrible start before starting to right the ship, and now Anthony Davis is on the shelf with muscle spasms in his hip/groin area. Meanwhile, the strength of schedule has been intense. But Wednesday, the Lakers did something they haven't done all year, even with all the adversity — they didn't bother to show up. LA was flat from the get go, and never came close to competing on the same level as the Rockets, fell behind big early and didn't mount any type of challenge in an embarrassing 128-94 loss in Houston. Save Rui Hachimura, who returned to the lineup after finally being released from the NBA's concussion protocol, the Lakers were awful. Christian Wood, starting in place of Davis had no points, and only took one shot. LeBron was absent defensively, loose with his passing and generally not sharp. D'Angelo Russell's final line looked ok, but most of it came in the third quarter after the Rockets had the game well in hand. Reaves was bad. And so on. The Lakers are now 3-5 heading to Phoenix on Friday to face a Suns squad that might still be without Devin Booker, but will have Bradley Beal back in the lineup. They are dangerously close to putting themselves into the type of hole they spent all of last season trying to climb out of, in a Western Conference that is unlikely to do them the type of favors it did last season. It's not time to panic. It's easy to reconcile the record with the context. But the fact of the matter is the Lakers need to find ways to win games even with players missing, and at the very least, they have to put out an effort that far exceeds what everyone saw on Wednesday. National NHL Writer for the Athletic, Dom Luszczyszyn joins Game Play to chat about Ryan Reaves' lack of impact, issues with depth scoring, the possibility of Nylander playing at centre, why it's difficult to play with stars and more.
Injuries have become a significant issue for the Lakers as they take the court tonight against the Heat in Miami. Taurean Prince should return to the floor, fingers crossed, but Gabe Vincent, Jared Vanderbilt, Rui Hachimura and Jalen Hood-Schifino remain out, and now Jaxson Hayes has found his way to the injury report as well. Most teams would struggle missing multiple players from their rotation, even while the stars are in uniform. But the Lakers have other issues that have shown themselves to be a problem, even before the injury bug started biting. Namely, the Lakers have been hammered on the glass, and as a result are giving up a ton of second chance points (while also doing very little to generate second chance points, themselves). Not unrelated, the Lakers are consistently falling behind thanks to bad first quarters. Even the games they've won have been come-from-behind. Meaning the Lakers are constantly playing uphill. All of this stuff was in full display, by the way, against the Magic in Orlando over the weekend. Knowing what the issues are and managing to fix said issues are not necessarily the same thing, but the Lakers need to bridge that gap ASAP, because few teams can be as bleh as they are on the glass and contend, and the idea of playing from behind through the season and into the playoffs and expecting success isn't even slightly realistic. Darvin Ham has highlighted the problems, and says the Lakers are working hard to fix them. One them that will help is getting the full lineup back. Or, if that's not an option, just getting Vanderbilt back. He offers a skill set (defense, rebounding) that is badly needed right now. Fair to say his value has been demonstrated in his absence. Finally, an interesting comment left on the YouTube page regarding the on-court pairing of D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves. Are their strengths as a pairing outweighed by their deficiencies? Why was it a very positive combo last year, and such a negative combo to this point this season? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Why are the Lakers getting beat up on the glass? SEGMENT 2: Why are the Lakers consistently getting off to bad starts? SEGMENT 3: Can Reaves and Russell play together effectively? Why has it been a struggle to this point this season? There is still a buzz around the Lakers following Wednesday's incredibly exciting 130-125 OT win over the Clippers at the Crypt. It was a game that featured big comebacks on both sides, incredible performances by each team's stars, big moments for role players, and—thankfully from the Lakers' perspective—the first real moments of productivity from Austin Reaves this season. It came after arguably his worst half of basketball as a pro, where he missed four of five shots and tied a career high with five turnovers (that's his career high for a game, not a half) and somewhat ironically, had the Lakers not been so shorthanded on the evening, missing Taurean Prince, Gabe Vincent, Rui Hachimura, Jalen Hood-Schifino and Jared Vanderbilt, there's a non-zero chance that Darvin Ham might have put Reaves on the bench. Instead, he was out there by necessity, and finally found a groove about halfway through the third quarter, and remained a key contributor through the rest of the game, including big moments in OT. Basketball is a team game, and it's impossible to pin performance of a team on one player, but if there is one guy who has negatively impacted the team through play below expectations (as opposed to simply not being available) it's Reaves in a walk. Is this the beginning of a turnaround? Hard to say. The Lakers head out on the road, and we'll all need to see some sustained quality play before declaring the slump over... but clearly he looked like he found some mojo after a few good plays. There was much more energy and confidence. Meanwhile, winning that game, shorthanded, changes the way you feel about the first five games of the season. Now they're 3-2, having played five playoff contenders (if you think Orlando can make it in the East) four of the West's best teams, playing through injury. They've shown grit, and guys like Christian Wood have bought in big early. Wood, in fact, has been so solid defensively that those lineups some (including your hosts) thought wouldn't be sustainable -- LeBron, Davis and Wood -- have been phenomenal from a net rating standpoint. Some of that is perhaps underestimating the matchup problems the Lakers could create with that trio... but a lot is that Wood has just been way better than his reputation as a defender. Because it hasn't been about his scoring. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Austin Reaves has a bounce back game. Is he actually back for real? SEGMENT 2: Does Wednesday's result make you feel better about the group? It does seem to change the vibes, and a lot of what we have five games in are vibes. SEGMENT 3: Wood has been a great surprise and fit, and it has zero to do with scoring. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Ailish Forfar and Justin Cuthbert start with Andrew Peters (8:32), former NHL enforcer and host of the After the Whistle Podcast, who discusses the Leafs' lack of toughness in Boston after a Brad Marchand hit and why this was supposed to be a different looking team with Reaves, Domi & Bertuzzi. When is the right time to send a message? Next, Alvin Williams live from San Antonio on the new-look Raptors, a historic start for Barnes and then a big matchup this weekend vs Wembanyama (26:15). In theory, it should have been the Clippers who were short on players, having executed a significant trade for James Harden that for the time being, at least, left them with fewer live bodies to put on the floor. But in reality, it was the Lakers. Jarred Vanderbilt was already out. Rui Hachimura is now in the concussion protocol. Gabe Vincent was downgraded to doubtful, then just to out thanks to a back injury. Jalen Hood-Schifino? Already shelved with a bum knee. And as the team was warming up, Taurean Prince's knee flared up. So it's not necessarily surprising that the Clippers got off to a red hot start, running up a 19-point lead on the purple and gold early in the game, and once again it looked like the Lakers would be boat raced by their cross-building rivals. (And meanwhile, Austin Reaves was so bad in the first half - five turnovers, 1-5 from the floor) that the Lakers might have been better off if he was hurt, too.) But rather than pack it in, LA kept grinding. They got it down to 13 by the half, and blew the Clippers up in the third. Eventually, they won in OT. LeBron James was incredible. Anthony Davis was superb. D'Angelo Russell was a huge reason the Lakers were in position to win down the stretch, and eventually did in OT. But Reaves had his first stretch of good minutes of the season in the second half. Christian Wood was a MASSIVE contributor. And surprise starter Cam Reddish came up big as well. It was a night of stars (the LAC's were amazing as well) and of really good, high intensity basketball. Much more than you normally get in the fifth game of the season. And this was the first game of the five where Lakers fans could be genuinely stoked by what they saw. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What a freakin' game that was, and what a statement it made for culture of the Lakers. SEGMENT 2: LeBron James is a freak of nature, and it's worth remembering just how long he's been at this, at such a high level. But he was just one of four stars who gave the fans their money's worth. SEGMENT 3: Wood and Reaves and Reddish! Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Meaningful change at organizations is often hindered by employees' natural inclination to keep doing things the way they've always done them. Now, a new three-year research initiative from Great Place to Work entitled The Great Transformation is measuring meaningfully transformative change at eleven organizations following from the launch of new inclusion, diversity and equity initiatives. In this episode of All Things Work, guest host Mike Frost is joined by Brian Reaves, UKG's Chief Belonging, Diversity, and Equity Officer. They discuss how The Great Transformation is helping UKG achieve improvements in areas such as productivity, agility and innovation. Employee resource groups (ERGs) also are playing an important role in UKG's transformation initiative, and recent study by Great Place to Work likewise finds ERGs are critical in creating a sense of belonging, safety and pride: Reaves describes the contributions ERGs have made at UKG and what it takes to keep them moving forward.Episode transcriptFollow All Things Work on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen.Music courtesy of bensound. This episode of All Things Work is sponsored by UKG.
It wasn't pretty, but the Lakers got it done on the second night of a back-to-back, facing a much improved Orlando Magic team at the Crypt. Final score, 106-103, and on a night where LeBron James was present and game—but fairly inefficient and looked very much like a near-40 year old playing on consecutive nights—the Lakers needed Anthony Davis to be a scary, scary monster on the floor. And man alive, he was terrifying, if you're a Magic fan. 26 points, 19 rebounds, five assists, a steal and three blocks. And perhaps even more importantly, Davis was everywhere on defense, looking every bit like the best player on that side of the ball in this or any other basketball league. But it wasn't just Davis. D'Angelo Russell, who has done just about everything else well in the early going except shoot from the perimeter, got the shot going on Monday. He was 10-14 from the floor (including 3-6 from downtown) en route to 28 points and eight assists. The flow of his game was strong, he set up teammates for success, and finally found a little of his own. That he played well despite the tough results with the jumper was encouraging. If he can get back to his norms and keep the rest? Look out. Christian Wood was also excellent, playing a huge role down the stretch on the glass and giving the Lakers length to combat the Magic. Wood hasn't scored in any prolific way as a Laker, but through four games has put out real effort defensively and is fitting in exactly as the Lakers had hoped. If the Lakers keep winning, likely Wood continues in this direction, because as Darvin Ham noted after the game, nobody wants to be the guy who starts chirping when things go well, or seems to be undermining success. The Lakers are still waiting for Austin Reaves to get it going. Reaves was, technically at least, better on Monday night than Sunday, but overall is still performing well below expectations, and the Lakers/Reaves need to figure out why ASAP, because this thing is built with the idea Reaves will be a highly productive player. And the team's top end demands he be that guy, too. Finally, Rui Hachimura has an eye contusion, suffered in Sunday's OT loss. That might have been the reason he didn't play late in Sunday's game. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers win behind a monster, and much needed, game from A.D., who since the second half of the opener has been dominant. SEGMENT 2: D'Angelo Russell has been very good. Reaves... not. SEGMENT 3: Derek Fisher's non-high flyer act, and Christian Wood buying in. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Austin and Pausha kick off their Halloween by discussing the late-night trade that landed James Harden with the Los Angeles Clippers, and how the Philadelphia 76ers will deal with a Beard-less future (1:36). The guys break down how Harden's arrival impacts Russell Westbrook, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George, before picking who they thought won the trade. Then, Austin and Pausha get into the new court designs that will be used for the NBA's in-season tournament games and decide whether they like them or not (22:12). Austin gives his thoughts on the projected top pick in the 2025 NBA draft, Cooper Flagg, committing to his beloved Duke Blue Devils (24:21). The guys also talk through the Lakers' early-season struggles when LeBron James isn't on the court, why we need to reset our expectations with Austin Reaves (26:32), and whether they enjoyed Joel Embiid and Stephen Curry's over-the-top celebrations (39:56). They wrap up the show by dropping their thoughts on the Pistons' impressive start, the Suns continuing to “load manage” their roster, and the new partnership between the NBA and Kim Kardashian. In context, 1-2 is neither bad nor surprising for the Lakers three games in. They opened on the road against the Nuggets, the defending champs and current consensus "best team in the league." They won at home against Phoenix (albeit in less-than-dominant fashion), and then Sunday lost in OT to Sacramento, who return basically intact a team that was the 3-seed last season. But Sunday's 132-127 loss is nonetheless a disappointment, because the Lakers had a chance to win, and instead let it get away. And given how competitive the conference is likely to be this season, any truly winnable game (the Lakers had 4th quarter leads) that turns into a loss will feel like a missed opportunity. Especially winnable games against conference rivals. LeBron James and Anthony Davis were both excellent Sunday night. LeBron again blew through his target minutes window en route to 27 points on an efficient 11-19 shooting, plus 15 rebounds and eight assists. Anthony Davis had 30/16/2/2/3. But while Taurean Prince helped give the Lakers some balance, Austin Reaves (1-12) was pretty awful and Gabe Vincent (3 shots in 32 minutes) was a massive non-factor. Reaves in particular has to pick it up, because there isn't a player on the team with a bigger gap to this point between expected/needed production and actual output on the court. So why has Reaves been so out of sorts? What might be done to get him going the right way again? One thing that will likely help him, and the rest of the team (on both sides of the ball) is a more consistent, tightened rotation, which Darvin Ham says is coming. He acknowledged that to this point, the patterns haven't been consistent enough, and that likely it includes too many players. That's something he and the staff will look at, though we might not get to see the results until Wednesday if LeBron, for example, sits out the second night of the back-to-back tonight, at home against Orlando. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose a tough one in Sacramento, and Ham is going to be looking at the rotation. SEGMENT 2: Austin Reaves is stuck in Strugglesville. SEGMENT 3: Did Darvin Ham make the wrong call not playing Rui Hachimura to finish the game? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers finished off the preseason Thursday night in Palm Springs, losing to the Phoenix Suns, 123-100. The score? Doesn't really matter. As it is with virtually everything in the exhibition games, it's much more about process and how certain players—and combinations of players—look on the floor. And for the Lakers, there was again much to like. Anthony Davis was huge defensively in the early going, racking up five blocks in the tirst eight minutes of play. Davis looks very much like a guy who is ready to elevate his team, and understands the obligation he has to be great. LeBron James looked smooth and spy over the course of 22 minutes, with 19 points including three triples. D'Angelo Russell continued his run of great play, piling up six assists in short order and showing really high end chemistry with the team's centers, whether Davis or Jaxson Hayes. But it's Hayes who has been the most surprising person in the exhibition games. Hopes in this space at least for a breakout year, or even anything that would be considered consistent, above-level performance, were relatively low. He's simply not shown any consistency at all through the first part of his career. Of course, now Hayes is in a situation where his role is very narrow and easy to define. Nobody in LA is trying to make a star out of him, or justify a lottery pick. The pressure is pretty low, and the situation far more stable. And thuse far, it's a combination that suits Hayes well. Christian Wood, however continues to struggle. He looks slow and unsure, which of course could be related. Anything in here to be worried about? HOSTS: Andy and Brian kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Reactions to the final preeason games, and the preseason in general. The good, the bad and the ugly. SEGMENT 2: Davis and Russell continue to thrive. SEGMENT 3: Does it matter that Hayes is outplaying Wood? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers have one more game remaining in the preseason before opening next week in Denver. Every indication is that Taurean Prince has locked up what was really the only lineup spot in real question coming into training camp - the starting small forward gig. Still, Tuesday at practice, Darvin Ham nonetheless refused to publicly name who will fill that spot. At this point, he's just messing with folks for fun, right? Because he's really leaning into the bit. But it really does feel like performance as much as anything would push Ham to this decision, given how well the presumptive starting unit has played through the first five games of the preseason. And, it should be noted, Ham so much as said he knew who he'd start back at the beginning of October. Meanwhile, listener/viewer HERKIMER had an interesting observation comparing D'Angelo Russell to Dwight Howard, which is broken down on the show. Is Russell going to have a Howard-like redemption in his second go round with the team, overcoming some bad feelings from fans? (In Dwight's case, from the "This is Going to be Fun!" season that most certainly wasn't, with Russell from his first stint in LA, plus last year's WCF.) Not a totally apples to apples comparison, but it's an interesting one for sure. Finally, Austin Reaves is the subject of a great profile from The Ringer's Mirin Fader, who is one of the best writers in all of sports. In it, she tells a ton of great stories. What sticks out? For starters, one where LeBron tells Reaves he's too good to be measured at this point simply from plus/minus type stats. What does that mean in practical terms? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Darvin is trolling, and it's fun! SEGMENT 2: Is Russell the next Dwight? SEGMENT 3: Reaves receives fascinating feedback from LeBron. Every year, ESPN's hoops department ranks the top 100 players in the NBA. Every year, it causes a little bit of controversy, because people tend to get really worked up about rankings and lists. But while they're certainly arguable and definitely easy to overrate (does it really matter if someone is the 7th best player or the 9th, the 58th or the 62nd?) lists like these can be instructive. Particularly in trying to figure out roster depth around the league, and how different teams compare to each other. So how do the Lakers stack up? Well, they're the only team with two players in the top 10 - Anthony Davis (10) and LeBron James (9). Austin Reaves comes in at 66. And that's it. Many teams have more guys in the top 100 (Denver has four, the Knicks, surprisingly, have five). But when you start to peel back more layers, it's pretty clear the Lakers have a high end roster with a ton of depth. How many players who are average or above (don't poo poo average - half the league is below it) do the Lakers have in their rotation? Well, all of them. James, Davis, Hachimura, Russell, Reaves, Vincent, Wood, Prince, Vanderbilt and, if things progress, Max Christie as well. But they're at least nine deep with average or above or well above. If that's your roster, your roster is good. Speaking of Russell, after Wednesday's win in Anaheim, he talked about his defense and acknowledged that it's a big part of the reason he was taken off the floor in the postseason, especially against Denver. (His horrendous shooting didn't help, either.) He knows that has to get better if he wants not only to be a four-quarter contributor in the playoffs for the Lakers this year, but also to re-establish his value across the league. Finally, The Athletic's John Hollinger put out a column this week highlighting players on good teams who could play important roles, but are relatively unknown to most basketball fans. On that list? Christie. When we look back on that column in the spring, how likely is it that he'll be correct? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: NBA Rank - LeBron 9, AD 10 and Reaves 66. SEGMENT 2: How LA's depth stacks up. SEGMENT 3: Is Christie a legitimate breakout candidate? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Normally, when Anthony Davis and LeBron James don't play in a preseason game, it's easy to shrug your shoulders and basically ignore anything that happens over 48 minutes of ball. When those guys are missing, plus Austin Reaves and Jarred Vanderbilt, the temptation is to completely discount the game. But for the Lakers, who are surely expecting James and Davis to miss a relevant chunk of games (some of which might come at the same time) it's actually really important to get a feel for how competitive they can be while those guys are on the sidelines. The hope was with improved depth and more firepower, the Lakers would be better suited to withstand those non-star games than they were last year. And if Wednesday's win over the Kings in Anaheim was any indication, the plan seems to have worked. D'Angelo Russell, Gabe Vincent, Taurean Prince and Rui Hachimura all cracked double figures in the starting lineup (not playing starters minutes), and were joined by Christian Wood (13 points in his most efficient outing of the preseason) off the bench. What the Lakers showed was that they have enough skill and firepower to hang and be a competitive team even with the All-Stars in street clothes. That could make a big difference in a tight Western Conference. Russell continues to play really, really well, and has an interesting opportunity in front of him this year to reset the conversation around his value. Finally, there are more interesting aspects of the NBA's annual GM survey we didn't get to earlier in the week. For starters, the Lakers were picked to finish third in the conference, and also received a tremendous amount of praise for their offseason. Basically, they got the best grades of any team not directly or indirectly involved in the Damian Lillard sweepstakes. Plus, there's one category the Lakers should have gotten votes that could make a big difference in the standings this year. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers played a good game without their stars, which is a good sign for the season. SEGMENT 2: D'Angelo Russell continues to play well. SEGMENT 3: More NBA GM Survey results... Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
