Welcome to The Peds NP Acute Care Faculty series! This series was created and peer-edited by national leaders in acute care PNP education collaborating with one another to meet the needs of our future colleagues. In the push for competency-based education where faculty verify the skills of what a student can do, rather than their knowledge, our series focuses on the application of didactic content with a practical approach so that you can learn nuances of clinical skills before you reach the bedside.    *This is the second episode in a 2 part series on enteral feeding. Listen to Episode 75: Malnutrition and Feeding Tube Selection first.   This episode walks through the decision-making for which enteral formula to select based on the patient's age, protein needs, and GI function. A list of commercially available examples is listed for each age group and protein type. Fluid and caloric goals are discussed to determine if concentrated formulas are appropriate. Lastly, the process of starting continuous feeds and advancing to bolus feeds while assessing for tolerance is reviewed. Build functional skills by following along with a case study that is continued from the prior episode. It's proof that there's more than just formula that goes into tube feedings.   Authors: Becky Carson, DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC/AC, Jessica D. Welcome back to The Peds NP Acute Care Faculty series! This series was created and peer-reviewed by national leaders in acute care PNP education collaborating with one another to meet the needs of our current and future colleagues. In the push for competency-based education where faculty verify the skills of what a student can do, rather than their knowledge, our series focuses on the application of didactic content with a practical approach so that you can learn nuances of clinical skills before you reach the bedside.    This episode begins with a brief review of malnutrition and pediatric nutritional assessment in acute care settings. Next we begin a choose-your-own-nutrition adventure by asking a series of questions that aid in medical decision-making for which nutrition route is appropriate, and, if enteral feeding is best, then determines the type of tube indicated. A case-based discussion with examples helps you to apply the concepts to a complex scenario. Our next episode will focus on formula selection, the initiation of feeds, and assessment of tolerance.

It's a Halloween Victory Monday! In a chillingly close game with the one-win Detroit Lions, our Miami Dolphins managed to pick up our second straight win since Tua returned. How did our young signal caller look? Almost perfect.Miami Dolphins vs. Detroit Lions Game RecapEric Rowe a surprise inactive, but I'm happy the coaching staff realized what a liability he was before putting him out there!Braylon Sanders gets the nod over Erik Ezukanma with River Cracraft out; what's up with that!?Tua has another nearly perfect game - putting the Miami Dolphins in victory formation despite their early struggles. The Cheetah and Penguin show continues to be the most exciting Miami Dolphins football I've seen in my lifetime.Alec Ingold is an absolute beast; making big-time blocks all over the field, springing Tua for an 18-yard scramble, and picking up the first rushing touchdown of his career!Great job by the defensive coaching staff getting the defense motivated to completely flip the script in the second half.Jevon Holland was all over the place trying to be a one-man show; potentially giving up some big plays in the process. The pass rush was virtually non-existent yet again. Goff was getting the ball out quickly, but there were missed opportunities to turn this game around earlier. The secondary was exposed again, but not just against guys like Kohou and Crossen.Another pretty ugly win, but it showed some grit from this team. Detroit has played extremely well at home this season, even giving the Philadelphia Eagles a good run for their money. If we can get this defense back to making big plays, this team will be one to be feared in the playoffs. Support the showThank you so much for listening, #FinsUp baby! Sean Crossen grew up on the East Coast as a ski racer.  After graduating from Green Mountain Valley School in Vermont, Sean made his way to Gunnison to attend Western State College (as it was then known).  Sean quit racing, but continued to ski and entered some of the first US Extreme Skiing Championships in the early 90's.  By the early 2000's, Sean became an early pioneer of skiing Colorado's "Fourteeners", the 54 peaks that stand over 14,000' tall.   Sean used his art degree and had an art studio for a short time, though the majority of his income these days comes from painting houses.  Recently, he built his own house in the Larkspur neighborhood- and we talk about that process in the interview. The bulk of this interview, however, revolves around an avalanche accident that took place on February 3rd, 2017 outside Gothic, CO.  This was a close call, and Sean discusses the events leading up to the avalanche, what he remembers while he was caught in the avalanche, and the subsequent rescue that took place.  Even if you aren't a backcountry skier, there are lessons to be learned about first aid, search and rescue, and more.  A special thanks to Sean for recounting his story in such detail.
