Branding is losing its personality. In the race for digital efficiency, the world has succumbed to “blanding”—clean, neutral, and entirely safe design built for algorithms instead of people. Mark Nichols, Creative Director and Co-Owner of WMH&I, joins the show to challenge this rise of system-friendly simplicity. He shares why the brands that truly matter must push against global scalability, embrace their unique quirks, and design for humans—even if that means not being for everyone. What You'll Learn in This Episode - Why brands are paying millions of pounds to strip away the exact quirks that drive human connection The strategic power of distinctiveness and why only fifteen percent of brand assets are actually memorable - How a sector agnostic approach allows creatives to cross pollinate ideas from fashion into electric vehicles - The shift from designing for machine efficiency to using live data sets and creative code for living brandscapes - Why Nike should have doubled down instead of backing out when a bold running campaign polarized audiences Episode Chapters (00:00) Intro (01:08) The Rise of Blanding (03:34) The Value of Distinctiveness (04:48) Sensory Storytelling with Red Breast Whiskey (07:31) The Case for Being Sector Agnostic (12:04) Overcoming Client Fear of Polarization (16:30) Idea Driven Branding vs Style Points (19:42) Embracing Irreverence and Creative Code About Mark Nichols Mark Nichols is the Creative Director and Co-Owner of WMH&I, a sector-agnostic creative agency specializing in bold rebrands that push against global scalability and machine efficiency. (Courtesy Navajo Police Department) The Navajo Police Department responded Wednesday to a crash involving a semi-truck carrying uranium ore from the Grand Canyon's South Rim to a mill in Utah. KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio has more on the first reported incident since hauling began nearly two years ago. The accident occurred about a half mile east of Highway 160 and state Route 98 near Shonto in Navajo County. Officials say an SUV tried passing another vehicle, striking the passenger-side tire and bumper of the uranium truck bound for Blanding, Utah. The tribe's Environmental Protection Agency, along with the Pinyon Plain Mine, which is owned by Energy Fuels, were notified. Using a gamma radiation detector, they inspected the crash site, concluding no radioactive material leaked. The collision sent two people in the SUV to a local hospital with injuries, while the truck driver was unharmed. Tracy Day's daughter Kaelyn Schneider hugs MMIP advocate Jamiann S'eiltin Hasselquist at the Kaasei Healing Kootéeyaa on May 5, 2025. (Photo: Yvonne Krumrey / KTOO) Juneau, Alaska woman Tracy Day has been missing for more than seven years. And while her disappearance has become a rallying cry for MMIP in Juneau, her daughter also wants people to know who she was before she went missing. KTOO's Yvonne Krumrey has more. Kaelyn Schnieder says her mom was always finding new adventures for the family to go on. The house she grew up in in Sitka, Alaska was spotless and Day was taking night classes to be a nurse. Her struggles with mental health came later. “But I feel like, when she went missing, everybody was like, ‘Oh, she’s living in St Vincent. And like, she’s a mentally ill addict.' It was just not the way I wanted people to see her, because my mom was a wonderful parent, and she wasn’t always sick.” Schneider says when she was a young child, she was the victim of child sex abuse by her friend's father. After Day found out what had happened, she blamed herself for trusting the family. Schneider believes it triggered Day's mental health issues. “It changed her brain chemistry, you know. So that’s, like, the best way I could explain it.” Schneider thinks that changed the trajectory of her mother's life. Tracy Day has been missing since February 14, 2019. (Courtesy Juneau Police Department) Day struggled with mental illness and substance abuse, but Schneider wants people to know her mom the way she remembers her, as a dignified, even glamorous woman. “She was kind of like a diva. Like back in the day, she always had her hair done, lipstick done, nails, everything. She was always dressed so beautifully.” She was also a devoted parent and she was fun. “When she wasn’t at work, we were never bored. We would go ride our bike and we would get curly fries with cheese and milkshakes, and then we would go to the duck pond and feed the ducks. And, like, she was a good, like, playful parent.” Schneider says that even through Dayʼs later mental health crises, she always stuck around and checked in with her family. “She would not take off. She’s the opposite. She’s like, the parent that annoys you, because they’re showing up so much.” Schneider's son was born after Day went missing. He is five years old now and she is finding herself having to explain the absence. “My son, he’s at that age where he’s starting to question, like, ‘what happened to grandma?' And like, ‘Why is she not in your life?' And you know, like, he always asks — it’s so horrible — He always asks, like, ‘Are you gonna disappear?' And like, as a mom, that is just horrible. You know that knowing that my son, like, has that thought in his head, because he knows it’s a possibility.” So Schneider says, for him and for her newborn son, she will keep looking for the truth of what happened to her mom. “I really want to keep searching and talking about her case, not only for me, but also for my sons. I want them to know that people are still interested and care.” Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Sign up for our daily newsletter today. Fostering Conversations with Utah Foster Care

In this powerful episode of Fostering Conversations, host Amy Smith sits down with former foster youth Carlos Rios Redd to talk about lived experience in foster care, sibling separation, adoption disruption, resilience, and hope. Carlos entered foster care as a baby, lived in more than ten homes, and experienced three adoptions. Despite repeated trauma and instability, Carlos shares how relationships, faith, and supportive families helped shape the life he leads today. Now married and working as a K9 handler with the Utah Highway Patrol, Carlos reflects on how growing up in foster care influenced his compassion, maturity, and commitment to service. His story offers meaningful insight for foster parents, youth currently in care, and professionals who work within the child welfare system. In this episode, we discuss: What it is like to grow up in foster care and experience multiple adoptions The impact of sibling separation and staying connected Reconnecting with biological siblings after years apart Being a permanent child in a fostering household Resilience, healing, and allowing yourself to be loved Advice for youth currently in foster care Why maintaining relationships matters long after placements end Carlos speaks honestly about trauma without bitterness and shares why he believes connection is one of the most powerful tools for healing. Resources mentioned in this episode: Learn more about foster care in Utah: Utah Foster Care If you are a foster parent, considering fostering, or supporting youth in care, this episode offers perspective that is both grounding and hopeful. Transcript; Speaker: Join us for one of the most important aspects of foster care, former foster youth. Today we talk with Carlos who has gone through multiple homes and multiple adoption, and now he’s thriving. Amy: Welcome to Fostering Conversations. I’m your host, Amy Smith. Today we have a former foster youth, Carlos Rios-Redd. Thanks for being with us today, Carlos. Carlos: thank you for the invitation. Glad to be here. Amy: Yeah, we’re so excited to chat with you. I think this is one of the most important sides of foster care to discuss is the lived experience. So would you just introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your story? Carlos: My name’s Carlos Rios-Redd shred. I grew up in foster care through the system about at a year old, and then lived through, 10 homes within 10 years and been adopted three different times. And, I guess left the system through adoption at the age of 14, but really never left because we always had kids coming into our home as well. So I was able to see both sides of the spectrum on, on the foster care system. Amy: Yeah. So you’ve been, had the lived experience and also had then youth come into your home as the permanent sibling, so that’s awesome. So tell us a little bit about, I think it’s very unusual and honestly unfortunate that you were adopted three different times. Are you able to tell us a little bit about that? Carlos: Sure. Yeah. So the first adoption was coming from California to Utah to Blanding where our family brought us over. And we were with them for about two years and there was a lot of abuse that happened within the home. And one day they decided that they didn’t want us anymore, my brother and I, and left us at the DCFS office. Our caseworker came in and said, Hey, we gotta find you a home by the end of the day for you guys to move into. We’re gonna go gather your things because these parents don’t want you at the home anymore. So we’re gonna try to figure things out. Amy: adopted at that Yeah. Carlos: Legally adopted. It was about two years with the so we made it from. it was about 2005 when we moved over to Blanding here in Utah. Amy: And then Okay. Carlos: it was Amy: 2007. So then what did that look like? Do you remember being at that? Do, you were young, but do you remember being at that office or do you Carlos: remember I do. Yeah. So specifically that day, the office, they have a like a child’s room where they have the TV and the toys or whatever, and our caseworker just said, Hey, go in here, we’re gonna talk with your parents. And in my head, it was one of just general meetings that they have after adoption just to make sure things are going good. And then the next thing you know, we get told we are moving to a different house. Amy: Holy. Carlos: cow. Amy: then you guys go to another foster home? Carlos: Yep. We go through another foster home and then another foster home. And then we landed in a place where we were there for about two and a half years. And that was probably the first time ever felt that a family loved my brother and I. And we got really close with them. And then unfortunately, the judge said, you’re taking too much time with these kids and we’re gonna remove them and put ’em in a different home. Amy: Oh my goodness. Okay. So that one wasn’t the foster family’s Carlos: No, that was the judge’s decision. Amy: Wow, Carlos: Yeah, and to my understanding is that it was just because the parents wanted to do a guardianship instead of a full adoption and the judge didn’t like that idea and so they removed us from the home. Amy: Oh my goodness. Okay, so then you’ve reentered foster care again. Carlos: So then we moved to a different home, which brought us up to Brigham City from the south east corner. So totally opposite ends of the state. Amy: Yeah. Carlos: Yes. We were only there for six months and then things weren’t going well there. Amy: They did? Carlos: No, it was very quick on how they did it and came and picked us up and brought us back down to Blanding after the six months. Amy: Holy cow. And is that where your permanent home? Carlos: No, that, No. Amy: oh my gosh. Carlos: And so then there was another home after that, which was with a previous family that we, or he had been with. Amy: Okay. Carlos: So we were familiar with them. And then came our second adoptive family. Which I, at the time was really good friends with one of their kids. Amy: Okay. Carlos: Okay. and they’re good people. So this isn’t anything to say they’re bad ’cause they’re not. Almost everyone that I’ve ever lived with, I am on very good terms with. Amy: That’s amazing. Carlos: So we went to their home and we’re with them. how old was I? I was probably about, I think I was 10. And we were with them for maybe a year to a year and a half, somewhere around there. And then they had the idea to reconnect us with our family in California. Amy: Okay. Carlos: And so we went down there for Christmas, I don’t recall the year, but for Christmas, and spent Christmas with them and was able to see my sister and my mom, and reconnect that way. And then they said, we would like for you guys to spend the rest of the school year there and we’ll come back in May, June, whenever the school year ends and bring you back home. Just so that way we could just have that relationship with your biological family. Amy: Yeah. Carlos: And then things would’ve fallen out with that, with kind of some financial support or just in general just talking with them. Amy: Yeah. Carlos: And it’s sparked kind of an investigation or a curiosity with my brother and he got into my sister’s phone and saw messages that patients have seen. Yeah, that caused a lot of legal trouble for that family. Amy: For the adoptive family? Carlos: Yes. For the adoptive family. And they were getting charged with child neglect and child abandonment, because there was really no intention for them to come back and get us. Amy: Sure. Carlos: Which again, I haven’t been able to see the fully disclosed like the documents of the court which I’ve been trying to get, but the GRAMA request isn’t. Amy: I’m sure. Carlos: They’re being hard with that. But just speaking with several people was I don’t think their intentions were bad. I think the intentions was like, let’s get these kids back with their family if they’d like. But with the charges going on and them potentially facing jail time, my now family said these are good people. Don’t charge them. We’ll take the kids. Drop the charges. And that’s what they did. They dropped the charges and everything with that adoptive family and my brother, they came and picked us up June 4th of 2012, 6 in the morning. I remember I was staying with my sister. Six in the morning they picked us up and we drove all the way back in a day to Blanding and moved in with the Reds now, my adoptive family. And then after a little bit my brother returned to a previous family that we had lived with and was adopted by them. And so his last name is Black and my last name is Redd. Amy: That worked out. Carlos: it’s funny. I like to tell that. So a lot of stuff happened within all those families that we lived in. And again, like I said, I don’t have no hard feelings against any of the families that I’ve ever lived with. Amy: Yeah. Carlos: Which is really incredible because you really shouldn’t have been bounced around that much. Amy: Yeah. But unfortunately it is your life experience. Carlos: Yeah. I mean honestly, looking back, I would not give it up because I think it’s made me to who I am today. Amy: That’s amazing. That is an incredible perspective. So tell us a little bit about what it was like being with your biological family. How did that, like how was reconnecting with them initially when you were 10 or so years old? Carlos: It was weird to start off with. Amy: Because really they’re strangers, right? Carlos: Yeah. The last time I saw them was when I was five. I’m the baby of seven. Out of biological siblings I have half siblings and a couple full siblings. And I never really got reconnected with the two older siblings very much. I don’t, and I still don’t really know them very well. But the others I’m very close with and I never really look at the ones that have a different parent than I as half. They’re all like, these are full siblings because I know I’ve known them now and been able to reconnect with them so well that I don’t see it that way. My sister, it was a little bit awkward at first. Trying to figure out like, I know you’re my sister, but I don’t really know you. After a little bit within that six months we were able to get to a point where it’s like, yeah this is really good. Even with her boyfriend, now husband, I’ve known him since almost just as long as I’ve known her now. So it’s really good. We function as a good family I think and we try to see each other when we can and talk on almost a daily basis. Amy: So were all of the biological siblings removed, or just you and your brother? Carlos: So all of us were. Amy: Okay. Carlos: Except for the older two. Amy: Okay. Carlos: Some of them came to Utah and some did not. Amy: Okay. Carlos: Yeah. So my brother and I came to Utah. The other siblings were either put into a group home because they were older. Amy: Okay. Carlos: My two older sisters were put into group homes. And then the one home in California that we stayed in, that was the sister that I was just talking about and my brother. Then when my brother and I were adopted they only took me and him to Utah. They tried to bring the other siblings over to see if that would work, but it didn’t end up working. Amy: Yeah. What I’m really amazed by is that you guys have all reconnected. That’s a big family and to reconnect is really impressive. So who would you credit that to? Is it you guys now as adults? Is it these adoptive families? Like how did you guys reconnect? Carlos: I think the second adoptive family that sent us back probably gets some of that credit. Because without them doing what they did, it may not have ever happened until later on. And you never know how reactions would’ve been later on if it was a different family that would’ve reconnected us. And it’s funny, speaking of reconnection, this last Thanksgiving was the first time in over 20 years that all of us—except for the older two—had been together under the same roof. Amy: That is wild. Carlos: And so Thanksgiving was the first time. Amy: And how was it? Carlos: It was great. Everyone was smiling, having a good time. You could just feel the love in the air. It was great. Amy: Yeah. And is everybody healthy and functioning and thriving? Carlos: For the most part, yeah. I think some obviously struggle more than others, but for the most part everyone seems to be doing really good. Amy: That is so incredible to me. I have adopted kids and I know my kids have half siblings. We’ve never had that opportunity to meet those kids or have that relationship. I think that is really unusual and quite a gift that you’ve been able to have that. Carlos: Yeah, it’s awesome. I talk to almost all of them all the time. My brother Gio actually lives in Provo, so he lives about 10 minutes from me. Amy: That is so cool. So you and your brother were originally together for almost all of those moves? Carlos: Yeah, pretty much everything. Amy: And then the final move got split. Carlos: Yeah. Amy: What was that experience like for you? Carlos: Although we were in the same town, I remember the court day pretty good. It felt like my heart was torn out of my chest. Amy: Yeah. Carlos: I was sitting in the back row of the courtroom, bawling my eyes out because it felt like I just lost my brother forever. I think it was just a 13- or 14-year-old kid being dramatic, but it was pretty hard. Fortunately we were in the same town. I could drive to his house and it would take me 10 minutes. The families did things together throughout the week or months. Then eventually he moved and I moved, and now here we are again living about 10 minutes apart. My wife gets mad sometimes because I want to do things with my brother more than sometimes with her. Amy: That’s amazing. Carlos: I love it. He’s one of my best friends because he’s experienced that with me. He was a protector. Amy: What would you tell people—maybe kids that are in foster care or families that are fostering—if siblings have to be split up? Carlos: That’s a hard question. I don’t know if I necessarily have advice, but I would tell them it’s going to be okay. As long as they do their part to keep in contact and show that they want to still be part of each other’s lives, it’s going to be okay. If they get removed I don’t think they need to cut off all communication. The advice would be to continue the relationship. Amy: I love that. I think that is a huge part of foster care. Your story is a really good example of why it’s so important. You have a huge network of biological, adoptive, and family connections because people kept the relationships open for you. Okay, so tell us a little bit about what you’re doing now as an adult. You’re married—what does your life look like now? Carlos: I currently work for Highway Patrol as a canine handler. The dog that I have is a Belgian Malinois, four years old, and he helps with detection of narcotics and hopefully at some point for apprehension if needed. I’ve been doing that for almost four years and it’s been a blast. I’ve definitely experienced some things that even a 20-year veteran hasn’t experienced. I had an accident when I was about a year and a half on the job where I took a car head-on going the wrong way. After I came back to work I got into the canine program. I’ve always been interested in interdiction and narcotics investigations. By God’s grace I was able to get into it. I’ve been recognized by the NAACP, by Governor Cox, received a Purple Heart for that accident, and also a Medal of Honor recipient from Orem Fire—the first time it was given to someone outside of their organization. Amy: Wow. Do you feel like your life experiences growing up influenced your decision to go into this line of work? Carlos: A hundred percent. I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it is, but I believe the way I grew up influenced what I do now. It gives me a better perspective on how to do the job and be more compassionate when needed. But also knowing when there needs to be a boundary. Growing up in foster care and the experiences I had made me grow up fast. Amy: For sure. Carlos: I’ve been told a lot that I have the maturity of someone older than 25. I don’t always feel that way, but maybe it’s true. Amy: You’ve experienced so much. How do you think you are so resilient? You have experienced things that most people haven’t and things that no one should experience. Carlos: I have a couple reasons. The first one is probably my relationship with God. I’m not saying everyone has to believe in God, but I believe something guides people. For me it’s my relationship with God and knowing He guided my life to where I needed to be at certain times. The second reason would be my family—my mom and my dad. They’re good examples of resilient people who have gone through a lot. Amy: That’s amazing. Tell us what it was like being a permanent sibling while your family continued to foster kids. Carlos: Sometimes there was jealousy because when you’re the foster kid you get a lot of attention. Then suddenly there are other kids in the house and your parents are focusing on them. But it also helped me understand the struggles those kids were going through. I could connect with them easier than someone who had never experienced foster care. Sometimes I even sided with the foster kids because I understood exactly what they were going through. Amy: That’s a really interesting perspective. Carlos: There was a specific instance where one of the foster kids got into a physical altercation with one of my brothers and I stepped in and defended the kid in care. But everything smoothed out and we’re all good. Amy: What was it like when kids would reunify with their families? Carlos: I was happy for them. I already had a relationship with my family, so I wanted them to have that too. I wished them well. Amy: Have you kept in touch with any of them? Carlos: Yes and no. My parents have more than I have. Amy: What would you tell youth that are currently in foster care? Carlos: A mantra I keep for myself is that through pain and suffering there is light at the end of the tunnel. What you’re going through now can shape you into a better person if you face it head on. One day you’ll be able to help someone else. It can make you more understanding, empathetic, and less judgmental. Just keep going. There will be better days ahead. Amy: Did therapy help you? Carlos: I hated therapy. I refused to go. I felt like many therapists were just there to be there. What helped me most was allowing myself to feel the love of the parents and siblings around me. Sometimes kids don’t get that luxury, but there’s usually someone in the family you can connect with. I would encourage kids to find that connection. For example, one family we lived with for two and a half years still considers us family. When the mom passed away we were put on her headstone as one of her kids. Amy: Wow. Carlos: We still go to family functions with them. So I would encourage kids to find one or two people they can build a real connection with. A lot of healing can come from that. Amy: I love that. Kids do have to allow themselves to be loved, which is really hard when you’ve been hurt so many times. Carlos: Yeah, I still struggle with that. Amy: Thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your story. I know our listeners will really appreciate it. Carlos: Of course. Feel free to give my information to anyone. I’m always willing to talk or try to help someone out. Amy: That’s amazing. Thank you so much, Carlos. If you want to learn more about foster care, head over to www.utahfostercare.org.

She loves reading with the grandmas and grandpas. Oh, they get so excited. Diana: And then we had different kids this month and last month. And some of them said, “we have to go back. That was so fun.” They love it. [MUSIC PLAYING] Anthony Godfrey: Hello, and welcome to the Supercast. I'm your host, Superintendent Anthony Godfrey. It is a heartwarming partnership among senior citizens and elementary school students, a partnership where seniors from a local assisted living center are showing up and reading with kids in the school's media center. On this episode of the Supercast, we take you to Oquirrh Elementary School. That's where we see firsthand how being book buddies is building connections and companionship among students and seniors and bridging a generation gap. But best of all, it is inspiring a love of literacy in young children who look forward to the monthly visits from their senior friends. [MUSIC PLAYING] Anthony Godfrey: We are here at Oquirrh Elementary School during Golden Hour Reading, where Sun Ridge Assisted Living residents are working with students to improve their reading skills. Let's listen in. [INTERPOSING VOICES] You're going to read your book and show them how awesome you are. Here, tell you what. Wow. Hey, have you ever seen--have you ever been driving with your parents and have you ever seen this before? Well, I have. That's a long you. Called-- Good job. Good job. Anthony Godfrey I'm talking now with one of our visitors and one of the students here at Oquirrh Elementary. Tell me your name, what grade you're in. Cooper: Cooper and first grade. Anthony Godfrey: And Cooper, how's first grade going? Cooper: Good. Anthony Godfrey: And what did you guys read today? Cooper: Going Fishing. Anthony Godfrey: Oh, Going Fishing. So what did you like most about the book? Cooper: Like you have to get a special hook, like as a fish, but it's not actually a fish on it, but there's no splashing. Anthony Godfrey: And does this make you want to be a fisherman? Cooper: Yes. I really want to go fishing with my dad. Anthony Godfrey: So go home today and tell him, “Dad, I read about fishing and it's time we go fishing.” Cooper: OK. Anthony Godfrey: All right, nice to meet you. So how did it feel to be read to? First introduce yourself and how did you feel being read to today? Dale Koth: Felt great. Anthony Godfrey: Tell me your name. Dale Koth: I'm Dale Koth. Anthony Godfrey: And you're one of the early volunteers to come visit, but I understand there's something in your history that would make that not much of a surprise that you want to be at an elementary school. Dale Koth: I'm a retired teacher, elementary school teacher. Anthony Godfrey: And where did you teach? Dale Koth: I taught at Terra Linda for a while, and I also taught at Southland Elementary. Anthony Godfrey: How long did you teach? When did you start and when did you finish? Dale Koth: OK, I taught for about 29 years. I think it was in 1974. Anthony Godfrey: Wow. Over 50 years ago. Dale Koth: That's right. That's right. Yeah, in a little town called Antimony, Utah. Anthony Godfrey: OK. Dale Koth: I had nine kids. Anthony Godfrey: Nine kids in your class? Dale Koth: Five in the third, five in the second, five in the first. Anthony Godfrey: Wow. Dale Koth: No kindergarten because there were no kindergarten kids there. Anthony Godfrey: And from there you went to-- Dale Koth: I went to-- I taught every year then I went to Blanding. Anthony Godfrey: Wow. Dale Koth: And I taught Blanding Elementary. I taught three years. Then we came to the Jordan School District and I started in Southland Elementary. Taught there for about, I don't know, three years. May have been longer, but I forget. And then I went to Quail Hollow and I taught at Quail Hollow for a long time. Anthony Godfrey: Oh, wow. Dale Koth: Yeah. Then I finished up at Terra Linda and that's where I retired. Anthony Godfrey: So did you retire in the early 2000s? Dale Koth: No. Kind of in the late-- oh, yes, it's the late 1990s. Anthony Godfrey: Oh, OK. Dale Koth: You might say, yeah. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah. Wow. All right. Well, so you've been enjoying retirement. But is this an exciting addition to your retirement routine? Dale Koth: Yeah, I think it's great. You know, you have a good successful experience here for you and for the kids. And you know, you're doing something. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah. Dale Koth: And I really like it. Anthony Godfrey: Good. How many times have you been? Dale Koth: This is my second time. Anthony Godfrey: What did you love most about teaching? Dale Koth: Just watching kids progress, learn something. Anthony Godfrey: In elementary, you get to see a lot of that. Dale Koth: Oh, yes. There was a lot of it. Anthony Godfrey: What grades did you teach most? Dale Koth: Third grade. Anthony Godfrey: Third grade. That's a big one. Dale Koth: Which was my favorite grade. Anthony Godfrey: Third was the favorite. Dale Koth: That was the age when they start cursive writing. Anthony Godfrey: Oh, yeah. Dale Koth: I don't know if they still-- do they still do cursive writing? Anthony Godfrey: It's more-- not like they used to. Let me put it that way. Not like they used to. Dale Koth: If you had your way. Anthony Godfrey: Not that weird Q that looks like a 2. No, we don't do that stuff anymore. Dale Koth: OK. Yeah. Also, they learn their multiplication facts. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah. Dale Koth: And you could just get into reading, and like what somebody told me, the kids can be smart at that age without being a smart aleck. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah, that's right. Absolutely. Well, I really appreciate your coming and just getting to watch you with the students. It's really fun to see how much you get their attention right away. Dale Koth: Yeah. Anthony Godfrey: And they stay focused when they're reading with you. So thank you for doing that. Dale Koth: That's great. What's your name? Anthony Godfrey: I'm Dr. Godfrey. I'm Anthony Godfrey. I'm the superintendent for Jordan School District. Dale Koth: You're the superintendent? Anthony Godfrey: Yeah. Dale Koth: I've worked here a long time, but I don't think I've ever met the superintendent. Anthony Godfrey: Well, it's very nice to meet you. Dale Koth: I forget names a lot. Anthony Godfrey: Barry Newbold? Dale Koth: Barry Newbold. I knew Barry Newbold, yes. Anthony Godfrey: It's very nice meeting you. Dale Koth: Well, nice meeting you Anthony Godfrey: And thanks for doing this. We look forward to seeing you back next month. Volunteer: Well, great. I'll be back. I'll be back. Anthony Godfrey: We're talking now with Principal Jennifer Ludlow about the program here at Oquirrh Elementary. I know it's new. What do you think so far? Jennifer Ludlow: I love it. It's like my favorite thing and I just grin from ear to ear the hour before they come and about two hours after. Awesome. Anthony Godfrey: There's a great immediate connect with the kids and these volunteers. Jennifer Ludlow: Yes. Anthony Godfrey: Tell me about how the kids have reacted to this. Jennifer Ludlow: Oh, they get so excited. And then we had different kids this month than last month and some of them were like, “we wanted to go back. That was so fun.” They love it and they just love opportunities to read with kids or read with somebody else and get some practice. So far, it's been really positive. Anthony Godfrey: Having a new audience when you're reading out loud, so I'm going to try to impress. It really puts you on the spot, but it also puts you at your best. It helps you really be focused. Jennifer Ludlow: So yeah. And we know kids learn to read through repetition and practice and so what a great opportunity for them to practice with somebody with a lot of wisdom and experience. And we love it. It's so great. Anthony Godfrey: Add some novelty to the day and another human connection, another adult rooting for them. Jennifer Ludlow: Exactly. Someone else on their team. Anthony Godfrey: Well, it's another great thing happening at Oquirrh Elementary. Thank you very much for letting us be here today. Jennifer Ludlow: Thank you. It was a pleasure. Anthony Godfrey: We're now talking with a member of the PTA and the School Community Council. Introduce yourself and tell us how you got this idea. Alicia Abbott: My name is Alicia Abbott. I am on the Community Council at Oquirrh Elementary, also on the PTA board. So we were reviewing the stats of the school last year, and it hurt my heart to see how many kids are not reading and are not doing math. And it hurt my soul. Like literally, I couldn't handle it. And our school is amazing. I don't want to diss on our school. Our school is awesome and I love Principal Ludlow. She's amazing, and our teachers and the community here is awesome. Anthony Godfrey: And tell me, what's the impact that you have seen for the seniors and for the students doing this? I know it's only been a month. Alicia Abbott: Oh, I'm not sure I've seen an impact yet, but I feel an energy and a love of the seniors for the community here. And the impact on these kids is going to be life-changing. They are literally changing lives and the direction of the lives that these kids are stuck in, they are going to be helping them for generations, really. If you help a child, you help a generation. So I'm so excited about it. Anthony Godfrey: I think it's very meaningful when someone from the community spends time. They know their teacher has to. They know their parents have to. But when someone's choosing to volunteer and come in and be a part of their lives, I think that's a big boost to students, even beyond literacy. Alicia Abbott: Well, I have kids. I wouldn't be OK if my kids couldn't read either. So you know what? We got to put in. If we have parents working three or four jobs just to try to put food on the family table, they need help. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah, absolutely. Well, thank you for being a big part of that help and bringing this idea. I'm excited to see the impact that it has over the years. Alicia Abbott: Thank you. Anthony Godfrey: Stay with us when we come back. More with the seniors and students of Oquirrh Elementary School. Please introduce yourself. Teacher: Hi, I'm Anashele. I'm a first-grade teacher at Oquirrh Elementary. One of my students came back in with a huge smile on her face. I asked her how Golden Hour was and she said that it was so much fun. She loves reading with the grandmas and grandpas. She was reading a book about pets and she said that it was so much fun because books help her learn. They make her brain grow every day and she loves to read because she has so much fun doing it. Really seeing them learn to read is my favorite thing because they walk in the door at the beginning of first grade really not knowing how to read. And now I have students like the student going to Golden Hour and reading her own story about pets. So I love seeing that growth throughout the year. Anthony Godfrey: Thank you very much. It's great to be here talking with you. We're here talking with another one of our volunteers today. Collette Craig: Collette Craig. Anthony Godfrey: Collette. Now I understand Collette, that you used to be a teacher. Collette Craig: Yes. Anthony Godfrey: Tell me about your teaching career. Collette Craig: I was a cluster teacher. Anthony Godfrey: Where was that? Collette Craig: Clusters were east side and then west side. I taught at, I think, nine different elementaries. Anthony Godfrey: What district were you in? Collette Craig: Jordan. Anthony Godfrey: In Jordan District. What were some of the schools where you worked? Collette Craig: Let's see. Midvale. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah. Collette Craig: Sandy. Then they went west to Terra LInda, but not at the same time. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah. Collette Craig: And Monte Vista, Heartland. Anthony Godfrey: Wow. You really did cover a lot of area. Collette Craig: Oh, yeah. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah. Collette Craig: If you know culture history, it was all east side at first. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah. Collette Craig: And then they opened up west side. Anthony Godfrey: Right. What years were you teaching? When did you start and when did you finish? Collette Craig: 1985, I think. Anthony Godfrey: Is that when you started? Collette Craig: Uh-huh. Anthony Godfrey: And when did you finish? Coll: I finished in 20 years later. Anthony Godfrey: 20 years later? OK. 2005. OK. Very good. And 20 years later, you're back volunteering, reading with students. Collette Craig: Yeah. Anthony Godfrey: How has that been? Tell me about that experience. Collette Craig: This is my first time. It's been good. I didn't know what to expect, but it's been good. Anthony Godfrey: Good. Tell me about the students you've worked with so far today. Collette Craig: Oh, they're great. They're cute. Yeah, they're great. What else can I say? The pH sound is really hard for them to grasp. Anthony Godfrey: The pH sound. Hey, it doesn't make sense. Why does pH sound the way it does? No one will ever know. What did you like most about teaching? Collette Craig: I liked it when they got something. When they finally understood something. You had spent weeks, sometimes months on the same thing, and they finally got it. It's like, yay. Anthony Godfrey: It's rewarding. It's rewarding. Well, you're helping do that again, so thank you. Collette Craig: You're welcome. Anthony Godfrey: We're talking now with the activities director from Sunridge Assisted Living and Memory Care. Thank you for talking with us today. Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what's happening. Diana: My name is Diana. I'm working in the center for eight years and we have a purpose to have activities with purpose. So this activity is amazing for our residents because they find their friendship. They have a purpose in life, teaching kids. Also, that bring memories to them. We have some teachers participating in the activity, and that is amazing for them. They really enjoy it. The first time when we came, they came back telling the other residents, “that was so fun. We teach kids. That was amazing.” So we want to back. And today, when we back, other friends came with them. So that is amazing. They found a purpose coming here. Anthony Godfrey: Tell us more about the facility. Diana: OK. Our community has two areas. One is for memory care. The other one is for assisted living. We have seniors with some difficult to walk or to get medicine. So we assist them to get the most normal life like they knew it. So part of that and really important part of the life is to have activities. So we have activities every day from Monday to Sunday and we have our clubs. We have sewing clubs, cooking clubs. We have outings. We go one time a month to a different restaurant. Each week, we go to Walmart or to Smith's to do shopping. We have also assisted shopping. So we have volunteers to come with them and assist them to get whatever they want in the store. So that is part of the normal life like everyone knows. We have different things to make them feel like this, “I feel happy today.” And that is our purpose, to have them happy, to have them participating in every activity we have. And that is my satisfaction to see them when they are happy. And when I came with them last time, I saw their happiness in the faces. And it's just like a miracle to see them, how they share with the kids, and the kids accepting them. And it's like a miracle. Miracle happen. Anthony Godfrey: Yeah, wonderful. Well, thank you very much for making us a part of those activities and a part of the lives of these seniors. Diana: It's a pleasure. Thank you to let us participate in this program too. [MUSIC PLAYING] Anthony Godfrey: Thanks for joining us on another episode of the Supercast. Remember, “Education is the most important thing you will do today.” We'll see you out there. ► DONASJONER Vipps: Søk opp “Snakk med Silje” eller bruk vippsnummer: 806513 Bitcoin lightning adresse: psykologsilje@bb.no PayPal: NOK: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=LZBFC3PKM8ECA Internasjonal bankoverføring: BIC: DNBANOKKXXX IBAN: NO9015068887892 ► KANALER Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3XIJBJlX8FyZkyluivEch7 Apple podkaster: https://podcasts.apple.com/no/podcast/snakk-med-silje/id1684607083 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SnakkMedSilje Substack: https://open.substack.com/pub/psykologsilje ► SOME Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/psykologsilje?igsh=MW84MDE0MWplc2FwbA== TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@psykologsilje?_t=8oc3HBC1r4z&_r=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/psykologsilje Twitter: https://x.com/Silje_Schevig LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/silje-schevig-243750101?utm_source=share&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=ios_app ► KAPITLER 00:00 Start 03:16 Er folk mer hårsåre? 11:09 Steinar Wangen 13:36 Moralpoliti på Grønnland 15:54 Krimish 23:16 Skuespiller 25:08 Terapi 32:50 Hvordan bli komiker? 44:35 Skuespill 50:52 Reise alene 52:32 Sør-Afrika 01:07:39 Kastesystem 01:16:37 Kaffe eller te? 01:19:02 Pakistan 01:22:51 Dan 01:27:54 Oppvekst på Torshov 01:37:30 Familien Lillo-Stenberg 01:45:25 Tv-karrieren 01:53:17 Blanding av sjangereSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we explore a chilling series of firsthand Bigfoot encounters that stretch across the American landscape, beginning with a haunting road crossing in the remote hills east of Tacoma and Olympia, Washington. What starts as a late-night drive turns into a life-altering moment when three towering figures step into the headlights—then calmly look back. From there, the stories grow even darker and more unsettling. We travel to the high desert canyons of the Navajo Nation near Gallup, New Mexico, where late-night screams echo through the mountains and a massive black figure is seen crawling, standing, and watching from the darkness. We journey north to the rugged Blue Mountains near Blanding, Utah, where a Sasquatch rips open a teepee during a family hunting trip. We return to a known hotspot near Mena, Arkansas, just miles from Board Camp Crystal Mine, and hear updates from a witness drawn back to the same remote cabin where strange activity first began. The episode continues through the forests of southeastern New Mexico, the Ozarks near Marshfield, Missouri, and the pine-covered backroads of East Texas, where a family recounts terrifying encounters passed down through generations.

Episode Summary: In this episode of 90 Miles from Needles, host Chris Clarke looks into the intricate issues surrounding Bears Ears National Monument with guest Davina Smith, a Diné activist and Co-Chair of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition. The episode's introduction grapples with the political turmoil surrounding federal land designations and their impact on indigenous rights and environmental conservation. Clarke and Smith navigate through the consequences of political maneuvers by successive U.S. administrations, especially concerning the Bears Ears National Monument's existence and preservation. Throughout the episode, Smith discusses the historical and cultural significance of Bears Ears for the Dine people and other Native American tribes, underscoring its critical importance beyond mere land but as a living museum and spiritual sanctuary. Smith passionately depicts current threats from mining interests and unauthorized land use and calls for more robust public understanding and participation in protecting these sacred lands. As listeners are taken through Smith's perspective as an advocate and a former state political candidate, they are encouraged to engage actively in desert protection initiatives. Key Takeaways: Historical Significance of Bears Ears: Bears Ears is regarded by the Diné as a sacred cultural landscape with deep historical ties dating back to their ancestors, serving as a refuge and resource area. Current Threats to Bears Ears: The ongoing risk from mining activities and political opposition threatens the preservation efforts, reflecting past attempts to reduce and undermine land protections. Advocacy and Public Education: Emphasizing the importance of educating oneself about Bears Ears and its management plan as a means to participate proactively in conservation efforts. Political Dynamics: The Trump administration’s rollback of national monument protections is a recurring theme, revealing the broader political attacks on federal lands. Community Collaboration: Exploring avenues for economic growth respecting cultural lands, including tourism as a potential path, highlighting the complexity of local collaboration efforts. Notable Quotes: "It's about educating yourself, hearing from those that have worked in this work of protecting Bears Ears." "Bears Ears is a living environment, and that's why I go there…it's still communicating with Mother Earth." "I'm here to be a part of that voice because I was shared from my mother, my grandmother, and the grandmothers before them." "Educating people in these areas of Bears Ears…it's about educating these areas, but educating yourself as an individual." Earth Week 2025 came with a positive development for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) on efforts to implement a pilot program for analyzing wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) and learn ways to design safer crossings.Amanda Novak, a resource specialist in MDOT's Bay Region, returns to the podcast to talk about a recently awarded $476,000 federal grant and how it will be put toward the pilot program. She previously spoke about the grant on the podcast in September 2024.While we think of white-tailed deer most commonly when it comes to WVCs, other species to be considered include elk, moose, black bear, wild turkey, pine marten, eastern massasauga rattlesnake and Blanding's turtle. As laid out in the project abstract for the grant, the number of WVCs in Michigan continues to increase annually, worsening risks and costs to drivers. For example, white-tailed deer alone account for more than 55,000 WVCs and cost motorists an average of $130 million per year in Michigan. Additionally, WVCs are a major threat to many wildlife populations in the state, including documented impacts on several threatened and endangered species. Projected increases in tourism, housing development and climate change effects are likely to exacerbate WVC effects on motorists and wildlife in Michigan.

The last time the Bureau of Land Management made a comprehensive update to their oil and gas regulations, pop singer George Michael was topping the charts with his new hit song, Faith. So…it's been awhile. But that's changing. The federal agency is now poised to reform royalty rates, bonding requirements and even leasing preferences. It's a paradox that has bothered Shakespeare's fans for centuries: the man was as insightful into human beings as anyone whoever lived, and yet his own life is barely documented. This combination of literary genius plus biographical uncertainty has spun off a number of mysteries - including the question of how exactly Shakespeare came to know the things that he did. In this episode, Jacke talks to investigative journalist Michael Blanding, author of In Shakespeare's Shadow, about a renegade scholar named Dennis McCarthy's theory that Shakespeare may have drawn upon a previously unknown source - the lost plays of Sir Thomas North - and how Blanding himself joined the pursuit of searching for evidence to support McCarthy's theory.
