On Friday the Trojans put the pads on for the first time before Saturday's closed Coliseum workout. Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return to the microphones with a little twist to their typical format as they take on previews for USC's upcoming 2026 spring camp, which begins on Tuesday. Part 2 takes on the defense.  The boys of Helium skip on the pleasantries and jump straight into the spring preview of the defensive side in the following order: specialists, defensive tackles, defensive ends, linebackers, cornerbacks and safeties.  USC's defense is full of questions as Hall of Fame head coach Gary Patterson takes over the coordinator duties. Though he uses a similar 4-2-5 defense to what the Trojans frequently used under former defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, what personnel will Patterson prefer and utilize in each of those 11 defensive positions. When Coach Eric Henderson announced that he would be leaving the USC Trojans and returning to the NFL, there were plenty of big names linked to USC for the open job. After a few days of speculation, Lincoln Riley and Gary Patterson ultimately decided to promote from within and move Skyler Jones from defensive analyst to essentially become the defensive tackles coach with Shaun Nua. USC's defensive coordinator search came to an official close on Friday with the hiring of Gary Patterson, the former TCU head coach. Patterson was seen as the clear leader for the job over the course of the last several days.  Above you catch watch the Instant Reaction from USCFootball.com analyst Chris Trevino and Shotgun Spratling.  Patterson went 181-79 as head coach of TCU, and he was the Horned Frogs' defensive coordinator for three years before taking over as head coach. Additionally, Patterson has coached defensive backs and linebackers in his career.  "We are excited to welcome Gary and his family to USC," said head coach Lincoln Riley via a statement from USC. "As a Hall of Fame coach, who is one of the game's most highly regarded defensive minds, he brings a wealth of success and experience to our program. His impact will be immediate, elevating our defense and strengthening the culture we've built. We're proud to welcome him to the Trojan Family." In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") return to talk about the USC football team finishing off its 2026 Transfer Portal class with the addition of former Wisconsin tight end Tucker Ashcraft. The 6-foot-5, 257 pound tight end signed with USC Wednesday after playing 16 games for Wisconsin over the last two seasons with six starts. He has 22 career catches for 178 yards and two touchdowns. The portal window closes on Friday and there are no more additions expected by the Trojans for this cycle following the massive No. 1 ranked high school recruiting class that was brought in back in December. The guys also give their thoughts on the ongoing search for the next USC defensive coordinator, with the name of former TCU head coach Gary Patterson coming up in more conversations as of late. Head coach Lincoln Riley wasn't in a hurry to make the hire, and with only one day left for players to enter the portal it is looking more and more likely that the hire will come after that portal window closes. They finish up discussing what Ryan saw in Hawaii at the early Polynesian Bowl practices that unfortunately did not include the five Trojans signees that had accepted invitations to the game.
