Welcome to the final episode of season 2 of the Awkward Angler Podcast. This season has been great to connect with influential women doing work in realms of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within the fly fishing industry. We've heard some great initiatives that are just short of intersectionality but striving to do better, identity and coming out, vulnerability and healing, learning from our mistakes in advocacy, and how we quietly lead the way towards inclusion and conservation. What better way to end this season than with Kayla Lockhart. I know of no other way to introduce my boisterous guest. Kayla unapologetically advocates for human rights, mental health, and conservation. I appreciate how she authentically influences others by sharing her story and sharing how she lives with anxiety. I particularly admire the way she takes responsibility for the way she shows up; and the way she leads with compassion and empathy - both for her own mental health and for communities to have access to fly fishing as a gateway to conservation. Would you rather strive to be an ally or an abolitionist? Abolition requires a commitment to risk. Risking your comfort, safety, and status to ensure that your Black and Brown counterparts experience equity and its afforded benefits. Today I am sitting down with Andi Greene, host of Wine Down with Fly Gals on Instagram. She is also a scientist, a self proclaimed instigator, and an abolitionist. We talk about her identity and how she is white passing and also Mexican; and her learnings from being complacent to becoming the abolitionist she now proclaims. We also discuss cultural appropriation... and ironically Andi was recently calling out cultural appropriation on the company PostFly for profiting off sage in their Mother's Day box this year. Then she was called out on culturally appropriating an image she had on her screen while doing so. We talk about her learnings from this event and how to recover after appropriating other cultures. How can the industry learn how to recover when appropriation happens and when we have such good intentions however those negatively impacted are long lasting?! Becoming “anti-racist” sounds easy, but it can actually be quite challenging to shift our way of thinking. Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion work also known as JEDI is hard work, however if we can push through the discomfort and uncomfortable conversations, there is joy to be found. I met the founder of United Women on the Fly, Heather Hodson Neufeld, in 2019 at a fly fishing trade show. While it may have been a bit of a bumpy start, today, I now consider Heather an ally and activist within the JEDI space in fly fishing. I find Heather's anti-racist journey as bold. She is, what I consider a “classic model” of what diversity and inclusion work looks like: emotional, hard, complex, depressing, joyful and bold. I am so thrilled to sit down with Heather and have an honest conversation. We share moments of vulnerability and her raw experience of intent vs impact. And I gotta say, she's leaving a hell of an impact that I need all white women and the fly fishing industry to hear! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/erica-nelson2/support

Instagram has been a great resource for me to connect with other anglers and it's exactly how I met Emerald LaFortune. I found alignment in her posts and content when it comes to topics of LGBTQ+, racial and social justice, as well as being a female in male dominated spaces such as whitewater boating and fly fishing. Emerald is a writer, guide, and angler based in Idaho. This is also the first time we've actually connected outside DMs and emails. I could get lost in her voice, her way with words, and hearing her stories and perspective. We likely could have spiraled offf into many topics but today we discuss her identity, how the dominant culture can support women and LGBTQ+ boaters and anglers. We also break down an article about fly names. I especially loved hearing how she navigates social justice while being a white woman. So often I hear from white folks that they just want to get it right, or they don't want to mess up. I find it important to elevate Emerald's voice because she struggles navigating those ideals as well and we don't talk about it because it can get awkward. I, as an Indigenous, woman know the gender binary is not inclusive - while focusing on women is important, how are we going to move forward to include gender fluidity, non binary, and trans communities? I recognize progress in it's own right - getting women on the water is an important effort especially if it can be a gateway towards conservation however it's not enough. How are we expanding our education beyond the gender binary and it's colonial concepts? Thank you to my guests for your time and sharing your stories and perspectives. And thank you listeners for your support - the feedback, shares, and engagement - I didn't know what I was getting myself into but am pleasantly surprised and glad I can add a new skill under my belt. In this episode, Bianca and I go through even more questions and because there were so many we did not get to touch on all of them, however most have a similar theme that requires an understanding of what white supremacy is and how we participate in it. As the co-founder and consultant of REAL Consulting, we believe that taking responsibility for “white supremacy” is the duty of every person living in society, no matter their color, creed or background. We offer a new definition that breaks down the barriers that prevent us from answering this call to action. Our goal is to drag the concept of white supremacy out of the shadows of our consciousness and shake off the stigma; once we overcome the discomfort of naming it, we are empowered to begin the process of dismantling it. When it comes to justice, we need to talk about accountability. When it comes to hard conversations around justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, we worry about getting it right. So often when I conduct JEDI trainings, folks have nervousness about entering the space as they fear getting called out and for making mistakes. I can empathize with folks worried about hurting others' feelings or causing harm to underrepresented communities when we don't intend to. But we do. So...what do we do? We typically stay silent because working through hard conversations gets awkward. I have news for you...We're going to make mistakes. Even when we don't, we run into someone with opposing ideas, a different perspective or experience, someone that is offering a challenge, a push back, or willing to teach me deeper learning and understanding. I want to jump to 2018, when Camber outdoors announced a CEO Pledge that was the first of its kind. But there was already a pledge created by a Black woman, Teresa Baker. The amount of fear I have seen and heard from organizations that don't want to “end up like Camber.” but what they really mean is getting the PR backlash which leaves no room for justice, equity, diversity, nor inclusion. I have the honor of speaking with Amanda Jameson, who is a woman of color that was also the Diversity and Inclusion Program Coordinator at Camber Outdoors when this happened in 2018. In fishing culture, there is a strong belief that social media and geotagging is “killing” fishing, there are oftentimes guides or other anglers will get bullied for geotagging. And part of fishing culture is to never ask or tell fishing spots. As fishing is growing in popularity, I noticed an increase in gatekeeping, and online bullying as well. I find there is complexity in geotagging when it comes to fishing especially with overcrowding and vulnerable areas and fish. I am looking to break the barrier as it's oftentimes “taboo” to even talk about and I observe strong opinions and fixing blame take over. I found it necessary to have multiple perspectives and I am so thankful the following folks carved out time to have this discussion. People of Color have been demanding racial justice well before 2020. Why did it take the murder of George Floyd for companies and CEOs to publicly take a stance on anti racism? And on the other side, why are some companies afraid to even speak out? People of color have also experienced racism and discrimination within the workplace, so now that their companies are making statements, how are they being held accountable? This week we discuss “Performative Activism” that has been observed within the fly fishing industry that began around June 2nd, also known as Blackout Tuesday, and we'll discuss the impact we see today in the angling community. This is a conversation between a Black woman and an Indigenous woman and we share our personal perspective and observations as avid anglers in this space. Performative activism is a pejorative term referring to activism done to increase one's social capital rather than because of one's devotion to a cause. As we move into a new year, I would like to call in the outdoor industry to consider responding vs reacting and doing it authentically. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CA8I4D2FVxt/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link https://www.gofundme.com/f/brown-girl-outdoor-word-gear-library?utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer&utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/DemieshaDennis https://browngirloutdoorworld.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performative_activism#:~:text=Performative%20activism%20is%20a%20pejorative,activism%2C%20referred%20to%20as%20slacktivism. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/erica-nelson2/support

    Basic Fishes with Anna Le

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 21, 2020 74:21

On this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking and laughing with Anna Le. We get to hear about her career as a fish biologist. I realize I risk sounding like a fool sometimes, however, I didn't learn how to fish till I was 31, and my outdoor adventures didn't begin till I was in my mid 20's. So to me, all fish looked the same and the conversation industry gets a little confusing...on so many levels but this episode speaks to hatcheries and fisheries. While there's something for everyone to learn on this episode, my target is for beginners to let them know it's okay to not know everything about fish and various species at first. I also encourage you to keep at it and over time, you'll start to understand different types of fish. We discuss the fish spawn cycle and dating. Be sure to take the poll on this episode's instagram post. We also dive into the beauty in transgendered people and fish. Please note: I am not perfect, neither is Anna, and we still make mistakes. I'm always learning and even find myself fumbling through terms working in social justice. It's work that's ever evolving...it can definitely get awkward! https://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/article/fishtree_07#:~:text=A%20hermaphrodite%20is%20an%20organism,and%20female%20parts%20of%20reproduction.&text=The%20two%20large%20fish%20are,the%20smaller%20fish%20are%20male https://www.culturalsurvival.org/publications/cultural-survival-quarterly/indigenizing-love-through-dine-pride https://indiancountrytoday.com/archive/8-things-you-should-know-about-two-spirit-people-294cNoIj-EGwJFOWEnbbZw --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/erica-nelson2/support
