Greetings in faith, hope, and love. Summertime is here! Growing up in Texas, summers were nice, but the heat could be overbearing and the air thick and balmy. It never stopped my friends and me from going to the park, having fun, feeling free and alive.Thinking about today's environment and how many families and children are afraid to leave their homes—to travel, to simply live and thrive—is disheartening. Many are overwhelmed by fear and the loss of freedom, no matter if they are U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, documented, or undocumented. The welfare of those who are labeled different carries a burden to simply exist and the right to experience freedom as whole persons in Jesus Christ.United Women in Faith, we believe that every person is created in the image of God and should have equal rights, no matter their location, identity, religion, or status. For 156 years, we have been working for justice and advocating for change to policies or systems that prevent all God's children from thriving. If you look back over our history, our foremothers were part of every movement for equal and civil rights and peace building in society and the church.Recently, at our senior leadership team meeting, I shared a devotional reading titled “We Have Work to Do,” from Vincent Harding. He had just shared with young people at a Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., observance, when a young man asked, “If Dr. King knew his life was at risk, why didn't he step back? Why didn't he just chill out?” Before Harding responded, a young woman spoke up with great wisdom, saying, “Dr. King couldn't just chill out. He knew he had work to do!”My sisters and anyone reading this column, United Women in Faith must continue to do the hard work of advocating and seeking justice for the oppressed and the marginalized. Like King, who risked his life for God's call to all, we must love kindness, seek justice, and walk humbly with God. Jesus also risked his life to overcome roadblocks of difference and evil that prevented the vulnerable from being part of the body of God. Micah 6:8 and Jesus' advocacy for the vulnerable and challenging unjust systems tells us what is right in the eyes of God.As United Methodists, we vow to resist evil in all its forms, through the sacrament of baptism and reaffirmation. Until unjust systems, policies, and actions at the federal, state, and local levels of our country afford human and civil rights to all, we have work to do for God's kin-dom to come on earth as it is in heaven. This July 4, Independence Day, let's commit to engage with more zeal, putting our love in action through our social justice priorities: Ending Mass Incarceration and Criminalization of Communities of Color, and Climate Justice. There is always a Call to Action in which you can participate. Go to uwfaith.org to sign up for alerts or to take the Micah 6:8 pledge. Or participate in Mission u, Practicing Hope Together. Change is possible if we do this work together. We believe love in action can change the world. May it be so.

Over the last 150-plus years these are the words that have been used to describe United Women in Faith. I don't know about you, but I think that it is pretty outstanding to be part of an organization that can hold such a strong claim to a variety of descriptors like those.United Women in Faith, or, as I like to call us, The League of Extraordinary Unreasonable Women has a long history that is rooted in spiritual growth, social justice, and leadership development. It is from this history that we use as our foundation being change makers for the church and developing a community for women to explore and define their faith.

Katelyn Woodside is the Executive Director of the VAPA Foundation, a nonprofit bringing transformative arts education into San Diego's public schools. A classically trained violinist, longtime educator, and nonprofit leader, Katelyn is advancing a bold vision: healing through expressive arts. Her organization's award-winning proposal will train teaching artists in expressive arts therapy and place them in 25 schools across the county—reaching nearly 5,000 students with creative tools for connection, confidence, and well-being. This special episode of Stop and Talk was recorded LIVE at the Prebys Sparx Awards Breakfast, where the VAPA Foundation was honored as the grand prize recipient. Katelyn is joined by four outstanding Sparx honorable mention awardees—A Reason to Survive, Coastal Roots Farm, United Women of East Africa, and Youth Creating Change—each bringing powerful, place-based solutions to the youth mental health crisis. This Episode: What if the future of youth mental health isn't found solely in clinics, but in classrooms, farms, and community spaces led by artists, mentors, and culture keepers? With a growing youth mental health crisis and a shortage of clinical providers, communities are turning to innovative, non-clinical interventions rooted in creativity, culture, and nature. The Sparx award celebrates scalable, collaborative ideas that empower youth with agency and well-being outside the traditional healthcare system. In this episode, Grant speaks with the five Sparx awardees. Together, they share how their work is rooted in cultural identity, creativity, and community connection—meeting young people where they are, and building healing from the ground up. Their work highlights how healing happens when we invest in the assets already rooted in our neighborhoods. Key Moments: [6:38] Grant introduces the vision behind the Sparx Award and prize philanthropy [19:10] Katelyn shares how VAPA's idea evolved through deep collaboration [23:58] Training artists to heal: the scale and ripple effect of their model [33:56] Honorable mentions present their work: A Reason To Survive (ARTS), Coastal Roots Farm, United Women of East Africa (UWEAST), and Youth Creating Change [43:17] Stan Collins (Youth Creating Change) on equipping youth with emotional literacy and mental health skills to care for themselves and others. [45:41] Eden Mengistu (UWEAST) on bridging generations through culturally rooted programs that open conversations about mental health in the East African community. [48:43] Javier Guerrero (Coastal Roots Farm) on reconnecting tribal youth to land, culture, and healing through ancestral farming practices. [50:49] Lucy Eagleson (ARTS) on creating a “third space” for youth to explore identity through art and grow as community-rooted mental health leaders. Resources Mentioned in This Episode: A Reason to Survive (ARTS) – Lifting young people in the South County region of San Diego to become confident, compassionate, and courageous community builders through the transformative power of creativity. Coastal Roots Farm – Cultivating healthy, connected communities by integrating sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom. Prebys Sparx– Prebys Foundation's award program for big ideas to improve mental and behavioral health for San Diego Youth through arts, culture, and nature. Children develop at different paces. Some kids appear to be naturally fast. Others appear to move slower. The pace at which a child completes various tasks and projects is known as processing speed. We typically notice when children have slower processing speeds, and this can be challenging for the child and the adults around them. But processing speed is not indicative of intelligence or I.Q. And with support, children with slower processing speeds can thrive. It is therefore imperative that parents, grandparents, educators, and caregivers gain strategies for supporting all children, regardless of how they learn. On this episodes of Faith Talks we talk with with Dr. Ellen Braaten. We will talk with Otto Braided Hair, who is a Northern Cheyenne descendant, and Bishop Elaine Stanovsky, who co-chaired, along with Otto, an advisory report on the Sand Creek Massacre during the 2016 General Conference in Portland, Oregon. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/679  This episode is presented by TroutRoutes, not only the best mapping app to find the best water but also a company supporting important groups who are pushing for diversity on species and anglers! Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/troutroutes  Heather Hodson, an avid spey fishing enthusiast and the founder of United Women on the Fly, shares her exciting initiatives with iFishiBelong.org. We delve into the significance of diversity among anglers, just as vital as the variety of native fish in our cherished streams. We also learn insights from a survey highlighting the role of women in fly fishing. Join us as we discuss the need for swift changes in the industry and explore upcoming events designed to engage and empower the community. Get ready for an inspiring conversation with someone as passionate and busy as me. Episode Chapters with Heather Hodson on iFishiBelong 3:14 - Heather discusses the success and mission of United Women on the Fly, an initiative she has been involved with for eight years that aims to empower and connect women in the fishing community. She notes that while progress has been made, the push for broader industry change has been slow, which led to the creation of her new project, iFishiBelong. This initiative seeks to unite not just women but all people to foster collective change within the fishing industry and beyond, highlighting the need for inclusivity and collaboration to drive progress. 5:45 - We dig into how they started iFishiBelong which aims to create an inclusive environment within the fishing community by advocating for diversity and unity. Heather also explains that while gender discussions are often easier to address, deeper conversations around ethnicity and sexual orientation can be more challenging. The organization aims to bridge these gaps by starting with gender parity and expanding to other areas of diversity. 9:44 - We ask Heather about the evolution of inclusivity in fly fishing, particularly focusing on women's experiences in fly shops. She notes that there has been some progress in making fly shops more welcoming to women, but she emphasizes that change is slower than desired. A survey by United Women on the Fly revealed that while women feel more comfortable in these shops now compared to a decade ago, there's still significant room for improvement. Heather highlights practical steps fly shops can take to fix this. 17:03 - Heather shares that in the current year, their organization successfully hosted four major events focused on inclusivity, both in terms of participant diversity and geographic accessibility. The events took place in New York, Montana, North Carolina, and Oregon. These efforts were supported by TroutRoutes, which sponsored scholarships to help attendees cover costs and hire guides. 20:50 - She talks about the success of their event called Trout Fest held in Oregon and confirms plans to hold it again next year. This is a significant event for the local community, providing support and extensive educational opportunities, particularly in fly fishing techniques and entomology. 24:34 - Heather discusses an initiative called "All Kids Fish" founded by Becca Sue Klein in Atlanta, Georgia. This program focuses on engaging young people, particularly girls initially, in the world of fishing and environmental conservation. A key aspect of the program is its diverse mentorship, ensuring that children see role models who reflect their own identities, whether they are queer, transgender, or come from various racial backgrounds. 31:19 - We get into spey fishing. 37:49 - Heather highlights the advantage of using the TroutRoutes app for camping and fishing. It helps her find campsites and navigate the complexities of public versus private land, particularly in regions with restrictive access laws like Colorado. She also mentions features such as gauge stations, which provide detailed water data, and the ability to mark private waypoints, safeguarding secret fishing spots. 41:28 - She discusses one of their programs called Ubuntu Fly Anglers, co-founded by Bob Bartlett and Carl Crawford. This initiative focuses on advocating and supporting black and brown anglers to foster inclusivity outdoors. They recently held an event in Spokane called "We Are Here," which was impactful and highlighted the importance of representation for black and brown anglers. 46:44 - We touched upon the challenges faced by DUN magazine due to COVID-19, which led to its partial dissolution and transition to online formats. Heather highlighted the impact of the pandemic on their community-focused activities, as in-person gatherings were halted. 49:16 - Heather shares her admiration for Rick Hafele, whom she first met at an event in Spokane about 10 to 12 years ago. A self-proclaimed "bug nerd," she took extensive notes during his presentation on entomology. She finds the study of insects, particularly their changing prevalence due to factors like water temperature and sediment pollution, fascinating. 50:40 - Heather also discusses the Spokane River's rich history as a prolific fishery, despite being impacted by dam constructions like the Grand Coulee Dam. When children go to school, we expect they will be in environments that are safe, nurturing, and conducive to learning. But this assumption isn't always borne out in every school across the country. A student's race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and class influences how they are received in schools. While this isn't something many will readily admit, our school communities have work to do to create the beloved community in each and every classroom. The good news is that each of us has an opportunity to support students and educators. On the next live recording of the Faith Talks podcast, we are excited to have a conversation with several members of the Dignity in Schools Campaign during the coalition's national week of action. we will talk with Khem Irby, a fierce advocate for public education; and Andrew Hairston, a civil rights attorney with Texas Appleseed. Please join us for what I'm sure will be an enlightening and uplifting conversation.Faith Talks is produced by United Women in Faith and hosted by Jennifer R.
