In this episode, I speak with a woman whose podcast has deeply inspired me and whose writings have made significant waves in anti-racism movements. I had the opportunity to fangirl a little with Layla F. Saad as we discussed her journey to becoming an anti-racist changemaker and activist.Layla is known for addressing issues of racism and social justice, but this is her first time speaking publicly about her beliefs and identity as a Muslim woman. The ongoing genocides in Gaza, Sudan, and Congo have profoundly strengthened Layla's connection to the Divine through the concept of justice grounded within the Islamic tradition. Our conversation also covers a range of other topics, including how Layla's recent diagnosis as neurodivergent has changed how she interacts with the world and enabled her to understand herself better. Layla also shares her perspective on the importance of experiencing collective trauma, grief, and rage as part of our shared humanity.Layla Saad is a New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author, speaker, teacher, and cultural worker. She is the author of the groundbreaking anti-racism book Me and White Supremacy and the host of the Become A Good Ancestor and Good Ancestor Podcasts. Find Layla online here: https://www.instagram.com/laylafsaad/  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/becomeagoodancestor Support the Show.Find out more about Rose's work here: https://lnk.bio/dr.rose.aslanWebsite: https://compassionflow.comSupport Rahma with Rose so I can keep producing more episodes here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2197727/supporters/new Music credits: Vocals: Zeynep Dilara Aslan; Ney/drum: Elif Önal; Tanbur: Katherine Hreib; Rebap: Hatice Gülbahar Hepsev

Stella also works as writer and communications coordinator, while Emily also works as the Vice President of Advocacy & Community Engagement at Remake. “There are so many painful roots when you look back at the way that certain dyes came about and you know, cotton farming — there are so many different legacies of colonialism that existed and still exist. But I also want to take the word painful out of that sentence and say that we have also learned to acknowledge the roots of sustainability because not all of them have pain at the center. And I think what I've learned with so much interest and joy is the different textile heritages that exist across the continent — from natural dyes to hand looming to the ways that people grow certain crops, and yeah, just different ways of expressing and using textiles as ways to archive and also to preserve culture. And there are so many people that do this incredible work and I think that that is a really, really important acknowledgment that I had to come to realize in my own journey.” -Stella “Labor rights are the foundation of what we know to be fashion activism in general, if we think back to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, which I know that something here in the United States, folks maybe learn about in school. This was another fashion industry-related disaster that led to a swath of movement-building around how we advocate for safer workplaces for people working inside the fashion industry. You know, roots to International Women's Day, roots to some of the labor protections that we know and understand today, like the 40-hour work week. These are all things that if you look at the fashion industry from a history perspective, labor and the fashion industry, it is totally intertwined.” -Emily APRIL THEME — COMING TOGETHER TO BUILD A BETTER FASHION FUTURE Whether it's legislation, science research & innovation, transformation in language, the storytelling tools & platforms in which we use to communicate, the evolution of definitions, the popularization of the second hand economy or labor rights advocacy – so much has changed within the sustainable fashion movement over the last decade.  This week, we really put our new round table format to work. We dissect the sustainable fashion industry through a timeline of events, paying homage to Fashion Revolution Day – a movement that, in conjunction with many others, has brought more mobilization and change to the space. Join the four of us – all podcasters & storytellers – for this expansive breakdown. I Will Read for You: The Voice and Writings of Jaiya John

I do not know how to describe my third Sacred Conversation, with Laya F. Saad. We just finished our conversation, so my heart is still so full and crying. Layla lives in Qatar, has done groundbreaking work on the harm of and healing from supremacies, and has been on a beautiful personal journey involving her ongoing discovery of her neurodivergence. She shared so openly with me. I guess you can say that our conversation is about embracing your true nature, including your creative nature, and just how life saving and changing it is to do so. Our conversation felt to me like playful prayer. I hope it does for you, too.Sacred Conversations are periodic episodes of my podcast in which I reach out to people whose work and life inspire me, and we simply have an old fashioned phone conversation. No video. No scripted, transactional, extractive, one-sided interview dynamic. Just two people with a care and curiosity for each other's journey, asking each other soulful questions, and enjoying the ancient, mutually healing art of listening deeply. Again, not an interview. A spiritual communion. The idea is for us to relax and enjoy an organic conversation, like over tea or breaking bread, and get to know each other along the way. We're kicking off our Social Media mini series with none other than Layla Saad, the number one bestselling author of Me and White Supremacy, and a globally respected writer, speaker and host of the Good Ancestor Podcast, which we at Team Exactly highly recommend. Layla used social media, instagram challenges and internet trends to shirk assumptions about clout and instead issue an incredible call to action. Me and White Supremacy challenged her followers of all backgrounds to share their experiences of white privilege, encouraging her white audience to engage with the society's systemic racism in an unprecedented way. Floss and Layla discuss feeling drained by instagram, the inherent spirituality in Layla's confrontation with white supremacy and the importance of being uncomfortable. They also explore the vital work being done by writers and educators and their shared belief that while social media may be a springboard for speaker truth to power, literature will be their lasting body of work. Later they answer your questions on performative activism and dealing with relationships that change because of advocacy. You your anger, lest it use you. Lorraine Kim is a faithful connector of all people. She grew up in an inner-city neighborhood and church community. This influenced her spirituality, her views on race, and even her choice to go into social work. Her grandmother taught her that God never gives up on loving people, and neither should we. She talks about how beautiful our stories are and how they make us who we are. In 2018, Lorraine began an LGBTQ+ ministry group for allies, family members, and queer parishioners at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Urbana, IL. She shares the message that we can find our identities and that we all can feel God's love.  Lorraine shares her thoughts and observations about the tension inherent in social justice work and participating in institutions such as the church that cause discomfort and sometimes pain. “Sometimes we change the world by staying and working within and sometimes we choose to walk away,” is a powerful quote from our conversation.  Meet Lorraine Lorraine Kim describes herself as someone who wears many different hats. Professionally, she's a social worker who provides in-home counseling to homebound people through the Good Samaritan Program of Catholic Charities. She's also a mom and a wife, and an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She’s a quilter and she also loves reading. In 2017, The Orvis Company launched 50/50 on the Water, an initiative to introduce more women to the sport and to promote those already making a mark in the fly fishing world. I, as an Indigenous, woman know the gender binary is not inclusive - while focusing on women is important, how are we going to move forward to include gender fluidity, non binary, and trans communities? I recognize progress in it's own right - getting women on the water is an important effort especially if it can be a gateway towards conservation however it's not enough. How are we expanding our education beyond the gender binary and it's colonial concepts? I am thrilled to have my friends, Chrissy Atkins and Jackie Kutzer, co creators of the Orvis 5050 on the water initiative and hear about their individual learnings of launching something this big in the industry and reflections of their learnings on gender concepts. I'm joined in this conversation on race by Katara McCarty. Katara is an emotional well-being advocate for BIWOC (Black, Indigenous, Women of Color) She developed an app called Exhale for BIWOC to support their emotional well-being and manage their particular stress.   Key Topics:   • How Katara was born bi-racial (white mother and Black father) in 1972 and left by her mother in the hospital and then adopted and raised by a Black gay woman and her mother in 1972. Why she identifies as a Black woman instead of bi-racial.   • How systemic racism has resulted in stress, trauma, and life-threatening illnesses for Black, Indigenous Women of Color.   • Why Katara McCarty got involved in wellness after seeing that the wellness industry was primarily white.   • How she came to understand that the needs of BIWOC are different than white women who have not had the same trauma.     • How the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor and the resulting trauma to Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and Femmes caused her to develop her app to deal with their stress and anxiety that white people don't have.   • How many coaching programs in organizations are geared towards white people with white coaches who are not conscious about racism and the issues that non-white people have to deal with to navigate the corporate environment?    • What is in the app, meditations, breathwork techniques, coaching talks, and daily affirmations? They are in 45 countries.     • The need for everyone to practice anti-racism. Systemic racism is pervasive. How white people must play a key role in dismantling racist systems that they benefit from. What that will mean.   • Katara McCarty talks about the increase in her anxiety level, how the app helps her. The importance of people unpacking their own biases. She suggests people take the 20-day anti-racist challenge by Layla Saad.   • Suggested resource Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad.   • Her Exhale app empowers Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and Femmes to do self-care and teaches them how to meditate, breathe and feel good.   • Advice to people who want to talk about race: 1- Do your own work. 2- Know yourself. 3- Don't ask Black people to be your teachers, or educate you. 4- Unlearn, learn and relearn about racism.   Tweetable Quotes: "We have to create practices in our lives, to help manage the stress, anxiety, and trauma brought on by systemic racism, anti-blackness, micro aggressions, because it is killing us, there are resources to help us get that trauma, that stress, and that anxiety out of our bodies." - Katara McCarty "Most of those people were white that were paying for my services. So went from 20 years of work. Working with people on the margins to now I'm a coach and I have an all-white clientele, which didn't resonate with my values and how I want to show up for my community." - Katara McCarty     Bio: From out of the realities of abandonment by her biological mother, being bi-racial and growing up in a Black home, Katara McCarty realized early in life that the color of her skin mattered. After becoming a single mother at 19 and finding the courage to leave an abusive relationship, Katara became an entrepreneur holding leadership positions in both non- and for-profit organizations.   Today, Katara is a sought-after coach, author, and podcast host dedicated to cultivating brave spaces where all Black, Indigenous, Women of Color (BIWOC) belong. As a Black woman, she is committed to amplifying the richness of BIWOC and their stories, while also advocating for and providing emotional well-being resources for BIWOC, through her app EXHALE.

This week we dive into the TV masterpiece, It's a Sin, that has swept the nation and has been recommended to us on multiple occasions (thank you listeners!). It's A Sin arrives in all its glory and we are in love.
Synchronicity emerged in our reading this week, as Alex was consumed by Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters and Rhiannon sank into She Wants It by Joey Soloway. Both books offered incredible insight into the journeys and pluralities within transitioning. Alex shares another comedy song contribution, which is happening so frequently that it's almost ready to become a feature. Rhiannon drastically shifts the tone of the podcast by discussing cricket - we're as surprised as you are - and won Alex over with the drama of the Australian cricket team's journey to redemption, in the Amazon Prime series The Test. Finally, Alex shares her podcast hot tips, after listening to a fascinating discussion on Good Ancestor about white supremacy and erasure in yoga. Hello there, I'm Maddy Shine, and no that is not my birth name but more on that shortly. I'm your SEO and visibility queen, host of the High Vis podcast and your biz bestie for visibility.  I feel moved to share this because if I don't, it wouldn't feel authentic to talk about visibility and growing a business without talking about how to include being an actual human. I have found that we often tend to forget that behind the beautiful experiences we share on this platform, we are actually allowed to show up with other things too. If we are scared of “putting people off” or “that's not what my audience is here for” then we need to look at why (definitely something I've fallen into the trap of in the past) I'm talking, of course, about the anti-racism education that is SO needed right now, and has always been needed. In the past, I'll be honest (even though it makes me feel deeply uncomfortable to do so) I have watched and then flipped through stories and posts, praying for better and hoping people resolve it and justice is found but really I just didn't want to feel uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable is the very tip of the iceberg of privilege I'm sitting on and I don't want to feel like I'm being quiet about it any more. I've been on an online meditation retreat every evening this weekend and so I've had the opportunity to reflect on everything that I'm reading and recognising my privilege in being able to do so. I do not take this for granted. I'm educating myself this week starting with the following:  Workshop for white coaches (but to be honest all white business owners) //www.trudilebron.com/emergencyworkshop   People to follow and learn from on Instagram: www.instagram.com/novareidofficial/ www.instagram.com/rachel.cargle/ www.instagram.com/thegreatunlearn/ www.instagram.com/shiftingtheculture/   Petitions to sign, resources to learn from https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/   Books to read: Why I'm no longer talking to white people about race by Reni Eddo-Lodge    Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad    Brit(ish) by Akua Hirsch    I believe visibility is absolutely essential to making a success of your business. No matter if you are fully booked or have zero bookings, you need to be constantly reminding the right people you exist and that you are the perfect person to solve their problem.  I know that it can feel overwhelming on where to begin when showing up to get the results you desperately want and need.  So how do you start showing up and sharing your personality? What's enough? What's too far? Argh. These are some pretty common queries that I want to help you figure out.  Firstly let me say that people buy from people, we're not robots, or faceless brands so we need to share not only our expertise, but our personalities and show up authentically as ourselves  - an overused word I know, but it's true.   So where do we start and how do we get over the fear of what others might think ? Well, PSA right here! Listen up.  You will never be criticised by someone doing more than you, only by those doing less than you and the people who judge us are not our ideal clients.  I run my own business because I love what I do, so it's perfectly acceptable to share that I enjoy what I do.  When I acknowledged this, this is where it all began to change. I publicly celebrated wins, I shared my gratitude for simple things and I started to attract my ideal clients.

This week, Anna Joy brings you a solo podcast episode inspired by recent events both in the political environment of the United States, but also in the anti-racist environment of instagram and social justice online culture. The common thread? Child separation at the border. The context Anna Joy is coming at this from? Ancestral healing as political action.   She starts off with a short poem about her ancestors and a moment to celebrate today's Full Moon in Capricorn (find the youtube video where she goes into it deeper at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P079FndeBbs&t=320s) and then gets into the content!Anna Joy was encouraged by her own ancestors to share her family's story about becoming colonizers in the United States. She shares her awareness of her Swedish lineage as a case study for how white women who want to do better can use their family stories of colonization to heal systems of oppression within themselves and their society in the current day.   And, if you stick around to the very end, Anna shares the ancestral practice she uses which was taught to her by Winifred at Awentree (www.awentree.com and @awentree on instagram) including an altar and meditation suggestions.   Pertinent Links: @wildmysticwoman aka Layla Saad inspired this podcast episode. When Layla and I came together for our Sacred Conversation one Tuesday afternoon we had originally intended for our conversation to be about Layla's unveiling as a black muslim woman. However in the weekend before our recording white supremacists, neo-nazists and KKK marched openly in Charlottesville, Virginia. This sparked Layla to write a profound temple letter called “I need to talk to spiritual white women about white supremacy” – a letter that, if you haven't already, I highly encourage you to read. Feeling as though we'd been brought together for a higher purpose Layla and I decided to dive into the topic of White supremacy, patriarchy, racism and the Divine Feminine. As you will see and hear our conversation is open, raw and real. It may bring up guilt, shame, fear and blame – I know it did for me. So before you listen or watch I want to remind you that it is far easier to criticise, judge and project outwards than it is to truly sit with whatever arises within however dark it may be. It is however why you are here and I welcome you. “Through you this world will change” says A Course in Miracles. What that means is for you to shine a light on and heal what comes. Especially all of those uncomfortable, uneasy feelings. This is the true work of a master. Layla and I are, in this episode, not negating that you may have had it very rough, come from a troubled background or have had to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, however if you've been fortunate enough to have been born white then you haven't had to teach your sons how to behave in order to avoid being killed by the police, you don't have to add an extra 20-30 minutes of travel time to a meeting just in case you get pulled over for the millionth time for no apparent reason, nor have you experienced having your resume discarded simply because of your name. It is important that those of us who are born white finally acknowledges that not only is patriarchy and white supremacy real but also what it has put in place, because only in doing so are we able to finally begin creating a world that is for all. This Sacred Conversation with Layla was at times very uncomfortable for me truly realising the effects white supremacy have and how I inadvertently have benefitted from it without any thought. I've taken that as an opportunity for healing and transformation - I hope you will too... In this episode Layla and I talk about: White supremacy. The role of white women in dismantling white supremacy. Our roles as priestesses. Sacred activism and unveiling. Layla's personal unveiling and journey. How modern society lack purposely putting young people through initiations. How we create initiations for ourselves. How healing her Mother wound was key for Layla and lead to discovery about divine feminine and women's spirituality. How dark nights of the soul are not a fix but wisdom. How discovering feminist spiritual writing gave Layla a roadmap How the current unveiling of white supremacy is much more of a surprise for white people then for people of color. How the systems allowing white supremacy, racism and patriarchy has been in place forever. How Patriarchy and white supremacy is aligned, together, connected Why inner work is instrumental and important for the outer work needed. The fear of doing is wrong. What role the Divine Feminine plays in this. Why building inner resilience, courage and fierceness is important. Why now is not the time to let yourself be overwhelmed with doubt and shame, worrying about you having been complicit with your silence. Layla's journey within her religion. - and much, much more...
