There is a reason why the art 'space' is divisive and why money distorts many things. In Episode #504 of 'Meanderings', Juan & I discuss: the book by Magnus Resch titled '100 Secrets of the Art World', tight‑knit gatekeeping at the high end of the market, how control of information shape what gets seen and sold (often more than artistic merit), parallels to other status markets such as watches/supercars, why 'better' often defaults to 'more expensive', where marketing can overshadow craft yet many collectors still buy for love and to support artists and why the truest encounters with art might still be found in small local galleries rather than at Art Basel. No support for this week, very sad puppy :( Stan Link: https://stan.store/meremortalsTimeline: (00:00:00) Intro(00:01:52) Defining the 'art space'(00:03:38) First impressions: elitism, provenance and pretence(00:09:04) Gatekeeping: cabals, galleries and New York(00:12:06) Parallels with cars/watches: scarcity and status(00:15:27) Art Basel anecdote: committees, control and quiet coups(00:20:02) NFTs, provenance on-chain and collectibles vs art(00:22:22) Popularity: storytelling, marketing and money(00:27:38) Quality heuristics: effort, complexity and the 22blue painting22 problem(00:32:38) Boostagram Lounge(00:34:00) Misconceptions across niches: calisthenics, hand balancing, circus(00:39:03) On labels and assumptions: steroids, fitness and nuance(00:44:04) Finding the essence: local galleries, pure enjoyment(00:48:06) Would creation persist without cash?(00:53:56) Purity at the base, distortion at the peak(00:55:27) Housekeeping and support links; live chat banter Connect with Mere Mortals:Website: https://www.meremortalspodcasts.com/Discord: https://discord.gg/jjfq9eGReUTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/meremortalspodsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcasts/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@meremortalspodcastsValue 4 Value Support:Boostagram: https://www.meremortalspodcasts.com/supportPaypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/meremortalspodcast

God is moving on the earth, and He's not looking for observers—He's looking for partners to execute His divine plan. But let's be honest: succeeding in this next season requires more than just your ambition; it demands a specific set of non-negotiables. In this powerful episode of The Leader's Cut, Preston breaks down the 5 indispensable assets Jesus operated in and shows you how to follow His lead. Remember: You can't open a locked door without a key. This episode reveals the keys you need to walk in divine alignment with Him. You will be challenged to ask yourself: * Are you making success ultimately about you? * Will you bring others with you—even the people who hurt you on the way up? * Do you hoard what you've been given, or do you know the power of leveraging it? * When the blessings come, will you spend them or will you steward them? * When faced with a choice, will you choose obedience, no matter the cost? It's time to trade in empty ambition for Kingdom stewardship and step into the highest form of partnership, with Him.
Want to know why bad AI cites really bother the courts? Jeff and Tim discuss two recent fake-AI-cites cases imposing sanctions and State Bar referrals, and draw this conclusion: It's not that AI is bad at law—in one of these cases, the court noted that none of the AI mistakes even went in the direction of helping the offending party. Rather, the problem is that AI is just bad at citing and quoting the law. And the courts are super-protective against our legal canon becoming polluted with hallucinations.Blame game backfires: In Shayan v. Shakib, appellant's counsel blamed non-attorney staff for adding the bad AI cites to the brief. The mistakes didn't really change the arguments, and the court ordered counsel to file a corrected version. But the outcome is going to be the same, plus $7500 sanctions and a State Bar referral.Gatekeeping function: Courts emphasize that even when fabricated citations don't advance a party's position, they still threaten "the integrity of courts and the legal profession" by risking that fake law becomes cited as real precedent. We discuss updates in the Boies Schiller/Scientology case, and whether these recent cases predict the result.Voluntary dismissal dilemma: Tim's firm filed an amicus brief in the Maniago case, arguing that voluntary dismissals with prejudice should be treated as appealable final judgments, challenging the rule that clerk-entered dismissals are merely "ministerial acts."Heated bench: A Texas redistricting case features an unusually scathing dissent beginning with "The main winners from Judge Brown's opinion are George Soros and Gavin Newsom," raising questions about appropriate judicial temperament.

I sat down for a quick mini-pod with Mike Schneider to talk about one of the biggest topics in fingerboarding right now.. gatekeeping.. Is it helping the scene, or is it hurting it?Mike's been in the community longer than almost anyone, and with FlatFace, plus now bringing Blistered Fingerboard Wheels and Duck Decks under his wing, he's seen every era of fingerboarding. So he was the perfect person to get some honest insight from. This wasn't a full episode that one's coming early next year and we recorded this on the fly, so the video and audio aren't at the usual Bigspin quality. Thanks for bearing with it!I appreciate everyone who's been supporting the podcast, and I'd love to hear your take on gatekeeping in the comments. And huge thanks to Mike for jumping on and making time for this mini-pod.Support Mike!https://www.flatfacefingerboards.com/Support the show
What if God is already at the table you've been avoiding? Acts 10 turns the insider–outsider story on its head as we follow a devout Roman centurion named Cornelius and a sincere, reluctant apostle named Peter. We walk through the rooftop vision that rattles Peter's categories, the front-door threshold that tests his obedience, and the living room moment where the Holy Spirit rushes in before the sermon even lands. No waiting period. No second-class members. Just the unmistakable sign that God is forming one family. We unpack why Cornelius disrupts expectations and why Peter's “No, Lord” is a heartfelt reflex, not rebellion. From there, we trace how God patiently expands a faithfulness that had become too small for the mission ahead. The real pivot happens when Peter says, “Now I realize,” steps into a Gentile home, and watches heaven validate what earth had fenced off. Then the ripple reaches Jerusalem: leaders question, Peter recounts, and surrender wins out over certainty with the line, “Who was I to stand in God's way?”Together we name our modern walls—politics, tradition, wounds, fear—and ask what thresholds love is asking us to cross. You'll hear practical prompts to examine hidden borders, honor real pain, and join what the Spirit is already doing among people we've kept at a distance. If God has entered houses we once avoided, our next faithful move is simple and costly: follow. And we are back with the second part of our exploration of common barista myths! I have to say, the main point for both the owner and barista episodes is to encourage everyone to exercise a patience, humility, curiosity, and a sense that there may be more to a story that what we initially see. The culture of coffee shops is shaped on aspirations and passion, but also on assumptions that can damage, hold back, and make toxic an otherwise promising career or cafe. In this episode, we dive deep into one of the most heated debates in heavy music: Is gatekeeping actually healthy for metal, or is it holding the genre back? We explore why some fans insist gatekeeping protects the culture, how elitism can damage growth and creativity, the impact gatekeeping has on new listeners, emerging artists, and the future of the metal community. In this no-holds-barred solo episode, Chris Craddock unleashes a passionate take on the newly proposed 50-year mortgage—and why the backlash from real estate professionals might be missing the point entirely. With firsthand stories of scraping by financially, and hard-won insights from years in both ministry and real estate, Chris breaks down why homeownership at any cost is better than being locked out forever.Key Takeaways:The 50-year mortgage is not a scam—it's an OPTION, and options are powerful. Most real estate pros project their own financial goals onto clients, creating unnecessary judgment.Appreciation—not just principal paydown—is what builds generational wealth.Time in the market matters more than timing the market. The average homeowner has 48x the net worth of the average renter.Buying anything, even with a long-term note, beats renting for life.Gatekeeping homeownership is only widening the wealth gap.Real estate agents should be educating, not shaming.Connect with Chris:Instagram: @craddrockFacebook: Chris Craddock BusinessResources
The Irony of Paid Transparency I saw a post the other day that made me stop mid-scroll. An actor—let's call him Workshop Guy—was going viral for saying he was "tired of gatekeeping in the industry." He wanted to break down the walls, create transparency, build community… all that good stuff. And then, at the end of his video, came the link. A $200 workshop. I laughed out loud. Because, honestly, that's not transparency. That's marketing. Let's talk about why. The Anti-Gatekeeping Paywall Here's the thing: if your solution to exclusivity is to sell tickets to your version of inclusion, you've missed the point. This particular actor is an NYU grad—one of the most expensive, most exclusive programs in the country. That's not shade, it's context. The gate was already built long before graduation. So now, instead of widening that gate, he's charging admission. That's not transparency. That's a rebrand. And look, I have zero issue with people charging for their time. I do it too. I teach workshops, classes, coaching. That's education. But when you say you're ending gatekeeping while collecting checkout links? That's manipulation dressed as empowerment. Boundaries Aren't Barriers Here's where people get confused. When working actors say no to a "pick your brain" chat, that's not gatekeeping. That's energy management. You don't owe unlimited access to your time or experience. Protecting your energy isn't selfish—it's smart. Gatekeeping is exclusion for control. Boundaries are protection for sustainability. If someone says, "Hey, I can't jump on a call right now, but I teach a class next month," that's not blocking the door. That's structure. And if you've done any of Peter's Core Work, you already know—energy management is everything. What Real Transparency Looks Like Transparency isn't a sales tactic. It's a culture choice. It looks like: Sharing what you've learned, within reason. Answering a quick question in a Facebook group. Being open about your rates and usage terms. Talking honestly about rejection, burnout, or bad contracts. Transparency says, Here's what I know, take what helps. It's generosity, not a business model. Why We Still Need Some Gatekeeping Okay, this might sound controversial—but I think some gatekeeping is good. Without it, anyone can say they're an "agent" or "coach" and start charging people money. Gates aren't the problem. **Who holds the keys—and why—**is. If you're protecting integrity, professionalism, and ethics, that's structure. If you're protecting ego or profit, that's manipulation. The goal isn't to eliminate the gates. It's to make sure they're in the right hands. The Real Takeaway If you're frustrated by gatekeeping, start with generosity. If you're burnt out from giving too much, start with boundaries. And if you're tempted to monetize "transparency," ask what you're really selling. Because $200 to "end gatekeeping"? That's not transparency. That's just good marketing. Take Your Core Work Deeper If this conversation hits close to home, it might be time to focus on your energy management. In this episode, we unpack a powerful listener question: Can students also become gatekeepers in spiritual spaces? From mentorship secrets to withheld resources, we explore where "healthy boundaries" end—and where scarcity, secrecy, or ego may begin. This isn't a call-out episode—it's an invitation to look deeper at how we share, protect, and pass on spiritual knowledge. We talk transparency, reciprocity, cultural protection, and why some teachings are guarded for good reason. In This Episode, We Explore: Gatekeeping vs. Boundaries: How to tell whether someone is protecting themselves—or protecting exclusivity. Scarcity and Insecurity: The hidden fears behind withholding teachers, tools, or lineage. Reciprocity in Community: When sharing is medicine—and when it must come with respect and responsibility. Cultural Protection: Why some teachings must be guarded to preserve tradition and fight colonization. Business Spaces: What happens when entrepreneurs gatekeep strategy? Personal Accountability: What to do when someone else's secrecy triggers something in us. If this conversation stirred something in you, please share your thoughts on Instagram or leave a comment where you're listening—your experiences help shape future episodes.

In this episode of the Too Personal Podcast, Joy Taylor sits down with Nina Parker — TV host, producer, and fashion entrepreneur — for a brutally honest talk about surviving in the entertainment industry. Nina opens up about Hollywood's toxic culture, how ideas get stolen, and why Black women have to fight every single day to be respected in the media world. Joy and Nina trade stories about newsroom chaos, betrayal, gatekeeping, and why authenticity still matters in a fake industry. They also discuss how success, friendship, and loyalty can't coexist easily in Hollywood — and why both women choose to build opportunities for the next generation instead of hoarding them. Then Joy and Nina open up about sex culture in Hollywood and how to be more open with your romantic partners
My guest this time is Erin Gallagher - CEO of Ella and author of Hype Women: Breaking Free from Mean Girls, Patriarchy, and Systems Silencing You. Erin shares the inspiration behind the Hype Women movement and subsequent book. She explains how a single, intuitive post about celebrating other women sparked a global movement that reframed how women show up for one another. The conversation dives into unlearning decades of conditioning, rebuilding an “operating system” that prioritizes calm and self-care, and reconfiguring the ways women deploy their various forms of capital (human, social, financial, political) to support each other. Erin also walks through practical strategies for boundaries, managing expectations within family and work circles, and the daily actions that accumulate into meaningful cultural change. We end with practical takeaways for listeners to start hyping other women and creating a more supportive, less competitive ecosystem. Key takeaways Unlearning and rewiring your operating system takes time and deliberate effort. It's not overnight, but small, daily shifts accumulate into lasting change. Hype is active and transactional: hype requires action. It's about transferring capital (not just admiration) to support other women and yourself. The hype economy rests on four forms of capital: Human capital: your experience, expertise, and knowledge you can share. Social capital: your network and the introductions you can make. Political capital: your reputation and platform. Financial capital: money and investments you can deploy. Boundaries are powerful and often resisted by others who benefited from your lack of boundaries. Erin shares this quote from Emma Gannon: “The only people who get upset when you start setting boundaries are the ones who benefited from you not having them.” It's possible to reparent and renegotiate relationships with family (especially parents) as you evolve. This can be painful but is often essential for long-term wellbeing. The “could, should, would” framework helps decision-making: Could: are you capable of doing this? Should: does it serve a greater goal or bring usefulness? Would: would you still choose this option given your values and desires? Owning your worth and choosing yourself is a form of radical self-respect that challenges intergenerational patterns of self-sacrifice. Reclaiming unpaid labor and boundaries can free substantial time and energy, enabling more impactful engagement with work and family. Gatekeeping among women is common but counterproductive; sharing knowledge and opportunities strengthens everyone. Real conversations with close family (even when difficult) can accelerate healing and transformation. If direct dialogue isn't possible, writing or voice recordings can help you process and release trauma. Suggested actions for listeners Do a personal life audit: where are you depleted, and where do you feel energized? Reallocate time and energy away from draining activities toward high-leverage, fulfilling ones. Practice boundary-setting: start with small steps and observe who reacts; use boundaries as a compass for where your time and energy should go. Identify and deploy your own four forms of capital to support other women (and invite them to contribute to you in return). Read or listen to Hype Women to understand the practical frameworks Erin shares and apply them to your own life. When does spiritual teaching cross into control? Danielle S. and Danielle B. explore “weaponizing spirituality”—the moment channelled messages or confident truth claims become decrees that override your agency. They unpack pandemic-era examples, business-space tactics (such as blind offers, urgency, and the “you're not ready” approach), and gatekeeping in training. You'll hear how humility, transparency, and psychological safety create healthier containers for learning, plus quick cues to spot red flags and practices to restore balance—like shared authority, longer decision windows, and clear expectations. If absolutist language, guru-centering, or pressure to buy now make your nervous system spike, this episode offers a grounded reset and questions to bring your power back online. Highlights: Defining weaponized spirituality and its impact on personal agency. Business tactics: blind offers, urgency marketing, and inflated payment plans. Gatekeeping in training with labels like “untrained” or “unqualified.” Mediumship as an interpretive art with room for error and growth. Humility as the antidote to absolutism in spiritual teaching. Psychological safety built through clarity, transparency, and time. Restoring balance with shared authority, alumni access, and peer learning. Red flags: absolutist language, guru-centering, urgency, and pressure. Self-check prompts to notice when you may be giving away power.
Welcome back for Season 9 of Edge of the Couch! And hello to those of you who might be just starting your grad programs and finding us for the first time. When we were in school, professors kept bringing up their concern that there was oversaturation in the field. So, we discuss this question: Is it true that there are too many therapists? That question feels even more pressing now than when we first started the podcast five years ago, as the landscape of the field has shifted dramatically. In this episode, we explore why the number of therapists and the number of good therapists aren't the same thing, and why thoughtful gatekeeping plays an essential role in upholding the standards of the profession. While we often view bookkeepers as the magicians of our business finances, appreciating their attention to detail, their ability to categorize and match debits and credits, and for keeping our finances organized, there also exists the perception of a gap between the business owner's and the bookkeeper's knowledge of how money works. This lack of understanding can lead to miscommunications and underappreciation for the work that therapists or bookkeepers do. Sara Walls has seen both sides of the coin, having experienced being the therapist who needed help managing the business finances to becoming the bookkeeper who now helps therapists with their money. She actually left private practice for a few years until she discovered additional tools like Profit First by Mike Michalowicz and Linzy's course, “Money Skills for Therapists” (links below). In fact, one of her biggest realizations that helped push her to pursue help is summarized nicely with this quote: (00:06:17) "It became clear the more I got into it that what I didn't know was how much I could actually afford to pay myself, when I could pay myself, how consistently I could pay myself, exactly how much I should be saving for taxes." - Sara Walls Learn about her journey from therapist to bookkeeper for therapists, some financial management tips for neurodivergent private practice owners, ways to develop good financial habits to reduce stress about money and gain a deeper understanding of what a good bookkeeper can do for your business. Reducing Stress and Enhancing Financial Management with Accountability (00:02:45) Bookkeepers' Unrecognized Complexity in Accounting Profession (00:08:45) Therapist turned Bookkeeper shares financial insights (00:19:10) Bookkeepers: Undervalued and Underpaid Professionals (00:20:58) Routine Financial Engagement for Reduced Money Stress (00:28:44) Financial Co-Regulation for Enhanced Accountability (00:30:37) Financial Literacy Training for Therapists Establishing Open Lines of Communication & Good Financial Habits for Long-Term Success Finding an aligned service provider when it comes to your business finances may require an interview or other setting where you can determine their level of transparency, their defensiveness or openness when you ask questions, and their expectation of your two roles in the business relationship. Some bookkeepers may gatekeep as their defensive reaction to “protecting” their value. Similarly, some practice owners may not recognize the complexity of the work required to keep the business finances straight. Here are immediate ways to improve your bookkeeping and financial management skills in your therapy practice: Establish a financial routine: Regularly approach your finances, whether it's checking your bank app, updating spreadsheets, or using accounting software like QuickBooks. Systemize & organize: Keep track of your income and expenses systematically to avoid falling behind, implementing some automation and delegation to help along the way. Learn basic accounting: Seek basic understanding of financial concepts like debits and credits. This knowledge can empower you to manage your finances more effectively. Find assistance & accountability: Work with a qualified bookkeeper who understands the specific needs of therapists and small business owners and who openly answers your questions and provides transparency. Avoid the “it's a write-off!” trap: While deductions are beneficial, ensure you have enough cash flow to pay yourself and set aside funds for...
