When does spiritual teaching cross into control? Danielle S. and Danielle B. explore “weaponizing spirituality”—the moment channelled messages or confident truth claims become decrees that override your agency. They unpack pandemic-era examples, business-space tactics (such as blind offers, urgency, and the “you're not ready” approach), and gatekeeping in training. You'll hear how humility, transparency, and psychological safety create healthier containers for learning, plus quick cues to spot red flags and practices to restore balance—like shared authority, longer decision windows, and clear expectations. If absolutist language, guru-centering, or pressure to buy now make your nervous system spike, this episode offers a grounded reset and questions to bring your power back online. Highlights: Defining weaponized spirituality and its impact on personal agency. Business tactics: blind offers, urgency marketing, and inflated payment plans. Gatekeeping in training with labels like “untrained” or “unqualified.” Mediumship as an interpretive art with room for error and growth. Humility as the antidote to absolutism in spiritual teaching. Psychological safety built through clarity, transparency, and time. Restoring balance with shared authority, alumni access, and peer learning. Red flags: absolutist language, guru-centering, urgency, and pressure. Self-check prompts to notice when you may be giving away power.
Welcome back for Season 9 of Edge of the Couch! And hello to those of you who might be just starting your grad programs and finding us for the first time. When we were in school, professors kept bringing up their concern that there was oversaturation in the field. So, we discuss this question: Is it true that there are too many therapists? That question feels even more pressing now than when we first started the podcast five years ago, as the landscape of the field has shifted dramatically. In this episode, we explore why the number of therapists and the number of good therapists aren't the same thing, and why thoughtful gatekeeping plays an essential role in upholding the standards of the profession. This is a spicy one! While we often view bookkeepers as the magicians of our business finances, appreciating their attention to detail, their ability to categorize and match debits and credits, and for keeping our finances organized, there also exists the perception of a gap between the business owner's and the bookkeeper's knowledge of how money works. This lack of understanding can lead to miscommunications and underappreciation for the work that therapists or bookkeepers do. Sara Walls has seen both sides of the coin, having experienced being the therapist who needed help managing the business finances to becoming the bookkeeper who now helps therapists with their money. She actually left private practice for a few years until she discovered additional tools like Profit First by Mike Michalowicz and Linzy's course, “Money Skills for Therapists” (links below). In fact, one of her biggest realizations that helped push her to pursue help is summarized nicely with this quote: (00:06:17) "It became clear the more I got into it that what I didn't know was how much I could actually afford to pay myself, when I could pay myself, how consistently I could pay myself, exactly how much I should be saving for taxes." - Sara Walls Learn about her journey from therapist to bookkeeper for therapists, some financial management tips for neurodivergent private practice owners, ways to develop good financial habits to reduce stress about money and gain a deeper understanding of what a good bookkeeper can do for your business. Reducing Stress and Enhancing Financial Management with Accountability (00:02:45) Bookkeepers' Unrecognized Complexity in Accounting Profession (00:08:45) Therapist turned Bookkeeper shares financial insights (00:19:10) Bookkeepers: Undervalued and Underpaid Professionals (00:20:58) Routine Financial Engagement for Reduced Money Stress (00:28:44) Financial Co-Regulation for Enhanced Accountability (00:30:37) Financial Literacy Training for Therapists Establishing Open Lines of Communication & Good Financial Habits for Long-Term Success Finding an aligned service provider when it comes to your business finances may require an interview or other setting where you can determine their level of transparency, their defensiveness or openness when you ask questions, and their expectation of your two roles in the business relationship. Some bookkeepers may gatekeep as their defensive reaction to “protecting” their value. Similarly, some practice owners may not recognize the complexity of the work required to keep the business finances straight. Here are immediate ways to improve your bookkeeping and financial management skills in your therapy practice: Establish a financial routine: Regularly approach your finances, whether it's checking your bank app, updating spreadsheets, or using accounting software like QuickBooks. Systemize & organize: Keep track of your income and expenses systematically to avoid falling behind, implementing some automation and delegation to help along the way. Learn basic accounting: Seek basic understanding of financial concepts like debits and credits. This knowledge can empower you to manage your finances more effectively. Find assistance & accountability: Work with a qualified bookkeeper who understands the specific needs of therapists and small business owners and who openly answers your questions and provides transparency. Avoid the “it's a write-off!” trap: While deductions are beneficial, ensure you have enough cash flow to pay yourself and set aside funds for...

In today's "small" rant, I'm calling *bullsh*t* on the social media gatekeepers who make fitness feel exclusive, elite, and totally out of reach for normal women with real lives.Just as you start to feel like you're making progress, BOOM — another filtered reel, another set of “rules,” and another so-called fitness “standard” that leaves you feeling like you're not doing enough. From **macro-tracking shame** to **hydration vest speed-policing**, this episode calls out the performative crap that's ruining what fitness is actually meant to be: something that supports your life, not something that takes it over.We cover:
Comic Talk616 is a fandom podcast covering all things nerdy. Comics, anime, video games, you name it, we talk about it! So, follow us for weekly fun!In this week's episode #27, we discuss gatekeeping- when should it be done (rarely), and why people should stop.
This isn't another AI think-piece, it's a full-on data brawl. Copilot is out here plagiarizing Rob's pivot table crusade while the self-appointed nerd police try to lock down the definition of agentic AI. Meanwhile, thirty years of fantasy football become the unexpected proof that tuning beats buzzwords every single time. What starts as a slip from Copilot turns into a bigger story about how AI really works. Off-the-shelf tools can sound impressive, but they collapse into clichés when they're not tuned to the person using them. The difference isn't just in efficiency, it's in credibility. Get it right, and AI amplifies your voice. Get it wrong, and you sound like everyone else mailing it in. Don't settle for AI that sounds like everyone else. Listen in and hear what happens when tuned workflows collide with real-world stakes.

Too many aspiring veterinary professionals are met with a troubling response: “Don't do it.” In this episode, Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT, take a hard look at how that knee-jerk negativity, often voiced by those still in the field, may be harming the future of veterinary medicine. With decades of combined experience, Dr. Ward and Beckie reflect on their own paths and push back against the cynicism that's become all too common in comment sections and break rooms alike. They discuss how burnout, poor clinic culture, and a lack of autonomy can fuel dissatisfaction, and how mentorship, perspective, and opportunity can reignite passion. This episode challenges us to reconsider who we listen to, what messages we share, and how, as a profession, we might be deterring incredible talent. Do we hate our profession, or just our current job or role? And if we love the profession, why aren't we louder about it? Whether you're a seasoned veterinarian, a burned-out veterinary technician, or a curious student, this conversation is a call to stop gatekeeping and start supporting.
This week, Alex and Kate are joined by Jess Cogswell and Joseph Bradford to discuss Magic the Gathering, what got them into it in the first place, what's kept them invested, and the different ways it has created, and frustrated, community for them over the years.
July 15, 2025 | Are licensing fees required or gatekeeping? In this episode of The Chain, host Nimish Gera, vice president of Biologics at Mythic Therapeutics, and Ian Wilkinson, CEO of Gamma Proteins, discuss accessing antibody discovery technology through licensing fees and royalties—and whether these fees are justified or not. Wilkinson delves into the current landscape of antibody discovery technologies, including if AI-based technology warrants fees, how royalties affect both small companies and big pharma, and his background as one of the first experts in the field who offered purely free-for-service options. He also shares what excites him about antibody engineering and beyond. Links from this episode: Mythic Therapeutics Gamma Proteins

The New York Times' "The Protocol" podcast was designed to cast doubt on the efficacy of gender-affirming care for youth. The podcast recycled previous NYT's reporting that platformed dubious sources in the absence of a “smoking gun,” let alone any credible evidence. Yet, the Supreme Court would take the claims seriously, citing the Times in last week's United States v. Skrmetti 6–3 decision upholding Tennessee's ban on minors' access to gender-affirming care—violating their civil and human rights.. “Letting the states decide,” as we've seen with post-Roe abortion access, endangers people's quality of life and their very lives. This week, Katelyn and Christine have a robust discussion with mental health reporter Sandy Allen, a trans journalist who once worked with the host of “The Protocol.” Together, Katelyn, Christine, and Sandy debunk the Times' reporting and expose numerous issues with the new anti-trans podcast in the context of the Supreme Court's wreckage. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Jason Faust's first taste of the supernatural came when he ditched Sunday school to skulk through his family's church, hoping to catch the same “whispers and shadows” the elders gossiped about over coffee. Decades later, he's no longer a curious kid but a full-time paranormal investigator, fielding calls from families desperate for a night's sleep free of knocking closets and guttural growls. In this conversation, Jason breaks down his working theory that truly dark entities don't waste time on the unprepared—they reveal themselves only to people strong (or stubborn) enough to fight back. From blessed water that boils on contact to homes where the air itself feels weaponized, Jason explains what separates an ordinary haunt from a demonic showdown—and why he still believes curiosity is his best protection.
