For the 300th episode of What's My Thesis?, Javier Proenza is joined by Los Angeles-based artists and cultural workers Dakota Noot and Christopher Anthony Velasco for an informal conversation shaped by friendship, shared history, and long experience in contemporary art communities. The discussion reflects on public visibility, social media hostility, reputation, and the shifting dynamics of creative life in increasingly online cultural spaces. The episode also examines practical questions of artistic survival, including teaching, freelance writing, collaborative creative work, and the limitations of traditional institutional pathways. Moving between humor and critical reflection, the conversation offers a grounded portrait of how artists build careers, relationships, and parallel forms of legitimacy outside conventional gallery structures.

Spring is in full swing and Tahoe trails are opening for business quickly. In Episode 86, as the snow vaporizes, the boys chat about a bunch of trail tales, some funny, others concerning. After an extended Rumspringa on the ebike, Pow Bot returns to the traditional “Amish” mountain bike, but will he be Sin Bot for still occasionally riding his ebike? The boys share four-wheeling stories with their in-laws, talk about new trails being built, trails north of Truckee being closed for the season and some trails in burn zones being sprayed by the Tahoe and Lassen National Forest with glyphosate, aka Roundup, known to cause cancer. Trail Whisperer asks is it dope or derp to go on a road trip when gas is $6/gallon, jokes about Breckenridge opening local trails to ebikes (only with a medical condition) and a Core Lord calls in with a rant that South Lake Tahoe doesn't have any cool, progressive mountain bike trails. 2:40 – Everything in Tahoe is a month early – riding hero dirt and Pow Bot hanging up his snowboard.3:45 – A recap on Winter 2025-26 – Ended up at average snowfall for the season.6:15 – Pow Bot comes off the ebike Rumspringa and returns to the Amish bike community.11:20 – Early season Tahoe trail conditions – Riding the Tahoe Rim Trail and Flume Trail.12:40 – Trail Whisperer building new trail on Verdi Ridge.16:15 – Tahoe National Forest has closed trails in and around Emigrant Trail, Prosser, Boca.20:00 – Shout out to Tahoe Mountain Sports – helping TW out with a ski binding issue.20:50 – The Truckee Follies – Rated X fundraiser for Downtown Merchants Association.23:15 – Truckee Dirt Union Loam Masters Rally happening May 29-30.24:08 – Sugar Bowl is selling off all their vintage 1950s gondolas for $10k a piece.28:40 – Randy Robbins thinks snowboard beaver tail slapping is DOPE.29:45 – Parkhill has some thoughts about hallowed vs hollowed ground and gatekeeping.31:02 – Reno Tahoe tourism blowing up a sensitive hot spring on social media.33:00 – Gatekeeping – don't blow up the spot when its firing.34:10 – Chris has a rant about public versus private property.40:30 – Jacob really enjoyed VCGP episode – big divide between motorized and non-motorized communities.44:00 – Breckenridge is finally legalizing ebikes…but you have to have a doctor's note.45:40 – Moab allows ebikes on some trail but not all, but Jeeps and side-by-sides are all over.47:55 – Pow Bot's story of four wheeling in Telluride in a rental Chevy Blazer with his in-laws.50:40 – Trail Whisperer's 4x4 story of getting stuck in a Land Cruiser and spending the night in it with his ex father-in-law.58:15 – DOPE or DERP – going on a road trip when gas is $6/gallon.1:00:54 – Tahoe National Forest and Lassen National Forest spraying toxic Roundup weed killer on public lands.1:10:18 – Big Sally calls in with a trip report from Lost Cannon Loop MTB and Sonora Pass ski.1:13:20 – Chad wants to know why there aren't more progressive MTB trails in South Lake Tahoe.1:27:20 – If you get baptized for coming back to the Amish bike, then you ride the ebike, are you a sinner?

Ascolta An iPad guy su YouTube Podcast.Supporta il podcast
Benjamin Taylor was once brought in to help eleven chief executives navigate a merger that would cost the job of some. Before the meeting, a more senior colleague on his team pushed back on touching that topic. It would embarrass them, he said. It was better to keep things “professional”.Benjamin thought the opposite. That staying professional in that room was going to make it impossible for anyone to have an honest conversation. What happened next? An awkward silence and the topic remained untouched for the rest of the that meeting. He has spent his career walking into rooms like that one. And what he keeps finding is that most people just don't know there's another option. Sometimes it takes someone breaking the rule in front of you for you to realise that you've been following one all this time.We talked about where professional norms come from and why they're so hard to name, what it costs to break them and what it costs not to.Links to learn more about Benjamin Taylor:WebsiteLinkedInSir John Kay's LectureSitcom ‘Dear John'Any thoughts? Send us Fan MailSalon owners everywhere are asking the same questions:“How do I hire stylists?” “How do I fill my suites?” “How do I attract better people?”But what if the real problem is that most salons are still trying to solve outdated problems? In this episode, we break down why the salon industry shifted so dramatically around 2020, how owners responded in ways that often made things worse, and what modern stylists are actually looking for today. We talk about overwhelm, burnout, isolation, leadership, growth, mentorship, financial instability, social media pressure, and why offering snacks, towel service, and “flexibility” isn't enough anymore. We also share lessons from our own failures, including what went wrong in previous businesses, how we rebuilt differently with Hello Hair Co., and what we believe the strongest salons are doing right today.Your business should serve you, so that you can serve others. And that starts with solving the right problems.Key TakeawaysMost salons are still trying to solve outdated industry problems. Stylists are looking for support, clarity, stability, and growth. “Freedom and flexibility” alone do not build strong businesses. Snacks, towel service, and perks are not meaningful differentiators. Isolation and burnout are major issues in modern salon culture. Strong leadership and accountability help people grow. Social media pressure is overwhelming many stylists. Growth plans and mentorship create long-term retention. Financial instability cannot be solved by simply increasing commission. Because Tanya and I had booked the red room but weren't participating, I offered K the space and acted as her “orgy director,” gatekeeping the line of eager men, prioritizing condom use, and repeatedly coaching guys to deliver what K asked for-especially enthusiastic massage and no kissing or coming in her mouth. With five feet of new snow on the Sierra Crest in April, Tahoe is finally getting the snow we should have gotten in March. As a result, the boys are back to skiing, with a couple days at the resort and a backcountry mission to the Eastern Sierra for the annual Green Creek Chute-Out. The boys talk about the concept of hallowed ground – places with spiritual significance and importance, and how social media has led the charge in exploiting these places, resulting in “hollowed ground”. The concept of gatekeeping is also discussed, and asking, is gatekeeping actually a bad thing when you are trying to protect hallowed ground from abuse of the masses?Other topics include new ebikes launched at Sea Otter, lift line DOPE or DERPs, is AI music a plague that should be resisted, upcoming events to check out, discovering the original ice cream man song has racist affilations, and CALL US BACK, GORDO! 2:30 – Winter isn't over yet – recapping a busy late season Palisades pow day11:25 – DOPE or DERP – The Rogue Single in the lift line16:20 – DOPE or DERP – Smacking your snowboard off the ground to remove snow18:08 – Pow Bot went wing foiling and Trail Whisperer got some hero dirt19:28 – Skiing the east side of the Sierra Nevada – Green Creek Chute-Out29:20 – The concept of hallowed ground and respecting special places35:45 – The Jackson Hole Air Force – the first JH skiers to ski out of bounds39:00 – White Man Hallowed Ground vs Native American Hallowed Ground42:40 – Gatekeeping and protecting Hallowed Ground44:50 – Hallowed Ground vs Hollowed Ground49:20 – Downhill Phil calls in – POP-CORN was the phone number, prefers the original theme52:44 – Colin says AI music is DERP. Gatekeeping has long been a concern within the board game hobby. For decades, our hobby was shaped by small communities, often dominated by white men of a certain age. They decided who was allowed to call themselves a board gamer and who couldn't. However, as the hobby grew, it also became more diverse. Nowadays, welcoming newcomers and making the hobby accessible to a wider audience has become a highly important goal, a goal which I strongly support and feel very passionate about. Unfortunately, some people have started to use the term gatekeeping in such a way as to become gatekeepers themselves. In this article, I want to look at this paradox more closely.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2026/04/21/gatekeeping-the-gatekeepers-discussing-standards-in-our-hobby-topic-discussion/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: www.purple-planet.comSupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/(Photo by Florian Wehde on Unsplash)

Courtney Reimer's career trajectory reveals a profound evolution in how professionals navigate the intersection of corporate ambition and personal autonomy. After decades of climbing the ladder at prestigious organizations, she reached a critical inflection point that fundamentally altered her perspective on work and legacy. Being laid off multiple times throughout her media career forced her to confront an uncomfortable truth: the energy and loyalty she invested in corporate entities yielded minimal personal returns. This realization sparked a fundamental shift in how she views success, moving away from corporate validation toward building something that reflects her values and provides genuine autonomy over her creative decisions and daily operations. Courtney's insights about the podcast industry and content creation reveal a sophisticated understanding of what separates sustainable ventures from those destined to fail. Her central thesis—that not everyone should start a podcast—stems from recognizing that most people underestimate the operational demands required for success, from maintaining consistent publishing schedules to managing guest coordination and technical production. Her work across vastly different client types has taught her that the common denominator across all successful ventures is intentionality and strategic thinking about audience impact. If you're ready to build a sustainable, intentional approach to your creative venture, Courtney Reimer offers practical guidance through the Sounds Great Podcast Accelerator program. Gatekeeping is sacred when there's an elder to pass it down. But in the West, the lineages were broken. When systems attach gatekeeping to borrowed frameworks, protection becomes control: you're not enough until we say you are. This episode explores why, and what it means to reconnectwith animistic knowing - the direct, non-hierarchical relationship with universal healing intelligence that doesn't require permission, levels, or anyone's approval to access. If you've felt that hunger for a power you can't name, feltReiki as you experience and work with it is only half the truth, or questioned why Reiki demands so much gatekeeping - this is for you.5 THINGS YOU'LL LEARN BY THE END OF LSITENING IN:✅ Why gatekeeping is sacred in some cultures but becomes control in the West - The essential difference between initiation with a real elder present (alive, specificto lineage) and artificial gatekeeping of borrowed systems (hierarchy masquerading as protection)✅ What "spiritual orphaning" means and why your hunger is real - How broken Western lineage created a hunger for medicine that was never passed down, and how thathunger is being exploited through permission-based systems that make you feel "not enough"✅ The animistic knowingthat doesn't require levels, attunements, or anyone's approval - Spirit doesn't rank, doesn't gatekeep, and meets you exactly as you are - this changes everything about how you access and work with Reiki energy✅ How to spot the difference between aligned mentorship and control systems - Why paying for a guide's support can be sacred (like our ancestors did), but gatekeeping yourworthiness behind levels and certifications is exploitation✅ What it actually means to root yourself in direct spiritual authority - Not collecting frameworks like trophies, but cultivating conditions to unearth your own answers so you live, lead, and serve from authentic personal power that's yours aloneSpirit-led Reiki Pathway (investment options from £333 GBP with payment plans) https://www.reikiredefined.com/spirit-led-reiki-pathway/Free 30 min workshop https://www.reikiredefined.com/lifting-the-veil-on-reiki/Get my updates straight to your inbox: https://reiki-redefined.kit.com/6629991732Free community: https://www.reikiredefined.com/free-communityYou'll find me on Tiktok @reikiredefined
Join the Conversation at 303-477-5600 or text to 307-200-8222 Monday - Friday from 3 pm - 6 pm MT. https://RushToReason.com (3-31-26) HOUR 1 What happens when humor, culture, and truth collide? In this hour of Rush To Reason, guest host Andy Peth—alongside Tanner Coleman and Ashley Carter—guides listeners through a satirical yet serious look at what is shaping society's future. It opens with sharp, comedic jabs at "No Kings" protests, but beneath the laughter is a deeper challenge: are modern movements built on conviction or contradiction? The conversation pivots quickly to a debate on marriage, family, and declining birth rates, asking a tough question—are we waiting too long to build society's foundation? As generational perspectives collide, the trio explores financial reality, responsibility, and whether anyone is ever truly “ready” for kids. Then comes a striking twist—could having children actually improve mental health and purpose? But just when you think the conversation settles, it shifts again—this time to tax policy and economic consequences. A controversial move in Washington State raises a critical question: what happens when success is punished? Will the wealthy stay… or walk away? This hour not only informs but pushes listeners to confront how today's attitudes and policies may be reshaping America's future. HOUR 2 Hour 2 of Rush To Reason ramps up the intensity as Andy Peth, filling in for John Rush, teams up with Jerzee Joe for a fast-moving, no-holds-barred conversation that spans headlines, policy, and culture. It begins with sharp critiques of government narratives—free speech, immigration policy, and political hypocrisy all collide in a rapid-fire exchange that challenges listeners to question what they're being told… and what's being left out. Then the tone shifts. Real-world crime stories tied to immigration spark a deeper, more emotional debate: are these isolated incidents—or signs of a larger systemic failure? And why do some stories dominate the news cycle while others disappear? From there, the lens goes global. Poland's economic rise and strict immigration policies are contrasted with Europe's struggles—raising a provocative question: Does who you let in shape the future of your nation? And just when you think the conversation settles, it pivots again—this time to money, opportunity, and the American dream. Is college always the best path… or are skilled trades quietly becoming the fastest route to success? This hour asks big questions—and doesn't shy away from uncomfortable answers. Timestamps 1:20 — Jerzee Joe - https://JerzeeJoe.com HOUR 3 With Andy Peth filling in, hour 3 of Rush To Reason brings John Rush's audience a high-stakes conversation that focuses on a question that could reshape Colorado politics: Is the caucus system helping Republicans… or holding them back? Joined by Eli Bremer, the discussion pulls back the curtain on a process most voters barely understand—but may be quietly determining everything. Why does less than 1% participation control candidate selection? And what happens when that system produces candidates who can't win when it matters most? As the hour unfolds, the conversation moves from critique to consequences. Could the caucus system be discouraging strong candidates from even running? Is it draining time, energy, and resources that should be spent winning elections instead? Then comes the bigger vision: what if Colorado adopted a simpler, more open system like Florida or Texas? Would that bring voters back—or completely transform the political landscape? This hour doesn't just question the system—it challenges whether it's time to replace it. Timestamps 1:15 — Eli Bremer — Political commentator / former candidate

One of the topics I've wanted to cover on this show for the longest time is gatekeeping in witchcraft spaces. It was on my original list of topics when I started the show, and it just kept getting knocked down the list. My opinion has evolved a lot over the years though, and the take I have now is in many ways completely different than what it would have been if I'd made this episode when the show first started. And hopefully it's a journey you're willing to take with me.

"You're on stage. You're playing shows. You're going on tours, and they're like, you haven't paid your dues. It's like, I'm doing it right now. This is the dues." Drop Dead, Gorgeous is back. After a 15-year hiatus, frontman Daniel "Stills" Stillman joins Brian and Lizzie to talk about their highly anticipated return, dropping the new EP Sink Your Teeth, and gearing up for Warped Tour. Stills takes us back to 2006, explaining the raw, meticulous production behind In Vogue and what it was actually like blowing up on Myspace as teenagers. We talk about the very real pushback they got from traditional hardcore bands for wearing tight pants, why they skipped the "paying your dues" phase, and a wild story about a lost Skrillex remix that never saw the light of day. We also get into the current state of songwriting and the uncomfortable reality of AI tools pushing pop artists to either innovate or be replaced. "We were in that phase of wearing tight jeans, girl pants... we were kind of in a heavier scene, and so there was still hardcore bands that weren't really into that at all. We got a lot of pushback and hate because of that." "AI highlighted to me how formulated pop music actually is. And I think what it's forcing actual big pop artists to do now is to push the boundaries and mix it up more, because if they don't, they will be replaced by AI." "You're on stage, you're playing shows, you're going on tours, and they're like, you haven't paid your dues. It's like, I'm doing it right now. This is the dues. I'm here today to do that." Paul Pape is a creative problem navigator, TEDx speaker, and author known as “Santa for Nerds.” Over the past 20 years, he has built a reputation as the specialty artist companies like Disney, Universal, and Nickelodeon call when they need something that doesn't exist or their internal teams can't build. Working from his Nebraska studio, Paul creates custom collectibles, props, and prototypes with tight deadlines and exacting standards. Paul is the creator of Gamify Business and author of The Creative Player's Handbook to Business, which translates intimidating business concepts into gaming language that creative minds actually understand. Through his books, workshops, and coaching, he helps entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses without sacrificing their creative souls, proving that the “starving artist” stereotype is outdated and unnecessary. Paul first appeared on Follow Your Curiosity in September 2024, and I invited him to come back to tell us about his new Gamify Business program. Paul talks with me about how he recognized the need for a more creative metaphor for entrepreneurship; the danger of losing touch with your passion as your creative business grows; how the focus on what's NOT possible, plus the constant need to ask permission—even as a adults—can get in our way, and a whole lot more. If you've ever been intimidated by the idea of starting a business, especially as a creative, this episode is for you. Episode breakdown: 00:00 Introduction. 04:10 Using Dungeons and Dragons to explain creative business roles. 08:18 Leveling up business skills with gaming metaphors. 12:00 Business isn't selling out; creatives deserve a livable wage. 16:05 Building the book through stories and personal experience. 20:13 Learning entrepreneurship by adapting methods to suit yourself. 24:10 Gatekeeping of business concepts and simplifying with new language. 28:47 Kids embrace entrepreneurship because they haven't been told no. 32:27 Making a fool of yourself helps growth and confidence. 37:08 Confidence from passion attracts opportunities and like-minded people. 41:57 The tipping point: when passion becomes a draining job. 46:53 Failing is natural; our schooling overemphasizes perfection. 51:25 Coaching, permission, and feeling proud support creative entrepreneurship. 56:29 Rediscovering fun and permission helps creativity thrive. We open the door to the underexplained corners of Nerd and Geek culture—where a driveway TARDIS keeps you warm at the bus stop, Flash Gordon becomes a friendship hinge, and debates about whether Star Wars is science fiction or fantasy spark better ways to watch everything else. This is a brief note from Podfest in Orlando earlier this year.
Send a text#372 - Have you ever heard a runner call say someone else wasn't "a real runner"? Have you heard someone call someone disparagingly "a jogger"? This person is trying to gatekeep running. Trying to keep others out of certain running circles is nothing new. Fortunately, it's not as common as it used to be, but it still happens. I explore the subject of gatekeeping today. I also talk about why it may be a positive thing in some circumstances. Also, please don't miss the last part of the show, where I give tribute to one of the pioneers in running. I think that a lot of people argue about what emo is because they're trying to protect their own identity as part of it. The Emo Social Club debuts on Idobi Radio! Brian and Lizzie discuss the Warped Tour 2026 lineup announcements and the reality of festival budgets. Brian argues that while fans want My Chemical Romance, the price tag might be impossible for the tour to sustain. The Emo Social Club has officially moved to Idobi Radio! For our debut episode, we look at the only news that matters right now: The Warped Tour 2026 lineup announcements. Brian and Lizzie debate which heavy hitters are likely to take the main stage—from the return of Fall Out Boy to the potential for a Bring Me The Horizon headline slot. Brian argues that while fans want My Chemical Romance, the price tag might be impossible for the tour to sustain. Plus, we tackle the internet's favorite argument: Gatekeeping. We look back at being "called emo" in 2005 vs. 2026, and why the term "Midwest Emo" might just be a weather pattern rather than a genre. Whether you were in the pit in 2005 or discovered the scene on TikTok, this episode covers the past, present, and future of pop punk. "I think that a lot of people argue about what emo is because they're trying to protect their own identity as part of it." In this episode of Beyond the Image, James Patrick calls out one of the most damaging behaviors in the photography industry right now. Photographers mocking others for asking questions, shaming so-called "basic" knowledge, and treating curiosity as proof someone doesn't belong. James breaks down how gatekeeping disguised as expertise harms education, kills curiosity, and drives people out of the industry. He explains why assuming everyone has the same access to information is a form of privilege, not professionalism, and why the loudest gatekeepers are often the ones who could benefit most from continued learning. This episode is a reminder that real confidence doesn't fear questions, real educators don't shame curiosity, and there are no dumb questions. Only people too insecure to ask them. If you care about growth, education, and building a better photography community, this conversation matters.
