This is a podcast produced by one periodontist to his patients and talks life and the management of a condition of chronic inflammation called periodontitis or periodontal disease. It is produced in small chunks for easy digestion.
Understanding the cost of periodontal treatment is essential, but choosing care based solely on price without knowing all options can lead to unnecessary expenses and complications. Dr. Ben Young emphasizes the importance of informed decision-making and warns against profit-driven practices that may cut corners on patient care. He strongly recommends LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) over traditional surgical treatments for gum disease due to its effectiveness, shorter healing time, and lower cost when compared with other therapies that omit the electromagnetic energy component. To make LANAP more accessible, he has reduced its price to align with the cost of a single crown or root canal, making it a more affordable option than extensive periodontal surgery. Insurance coverage for periodontal treatment can be complex and misleading, often leaving patients with unexpected out-of-pocket costs, so understanding policy limitations is crucial. Finally, Dr. Young offers free gum health screenings to help patients assess their needs and connect with trusted general dentists to make sure dental health is maintained long term. Please pass this podcast along to those you know who might benefit.
I talk about the difference with managing dental implants and teeth long-term. If you have dental implants there are certain checks you need annually. I also talk about how this holiday season is different from previous ones and also how humility helps us heal.
A review of Supportive Periodontal Therapy and a reflection on spiritual growth as a healthcare provider.
My daughter called me with a dental question.
People often get a few important oral hygiene concepts wrong. This frequently results in tooth and gum damage.
This a discussion on the topic of cost for periodontal services. I get into dental insurance, LANAP versus conventional periodontal treatment, dental implants as well as the importance of budgeting in ongoing preventive or supportive dental and periodontal care.
Your dentist tells you that you need a crown lengthening procedure. Let me try to explain what this is and why you might need one. Also we will get into the question about how long should people brush their teeth? The answer will be a little deeper than the rote answers often given.
Have you ever had a "deep cleaning"? Did you know this means you have had periodontal disease? It might be a good idea to listen to better understand the differences between different cleanings people can receive.
Introducing three recent readings from my daily blog found at thestillpoint.substack.com. Also there is a holiday treatment offer stuck in there as well.
How should you, a patient, interact with dentists and physicians? It is helpful, I think to give you a little background on who the two groups are trained.
I am passing on an idea I think important about the upcoming elections. Be sure to vote.
You have an area of receding gums and you would like to know if it is a problem or not. This podcast delves into all of this and hopefully will help you consider what you might want to do about it.
Is our success in life more about our intelligence or about those who influenced us? In this podcast I tell you about my mom, how she kept me from getting cavities as a child and how she essentially launched my future career.
The patient is the Appointment Manager and makes decisions for their health care as well as that of the children under their care. I respect expertise but it cannot be used to pressure people to do things they do not feel comfortable doing. Are there exceptions? Sure. There are exceptions to everything it seems, but we are discussing the big picture in this podcast.
Grateful people have learned to give their ego's a rest. Gratitude and humility go together. Anyone who bristles at the idea of humility and believes it to be a sign of weakness has trouble with true gratitude to others. Sure, we can all learn to thank people as a social behavior, but it will not warm us inside in the same way sincere gratefulness always does. Finally, it takes true courage to admit a need. And we cannot admit needs without humility. And humility is needed to have true gratitude.
On this ninetieth podcast, I think it's time to go back and talk about some of the basics, but it isn't just a rehash. I talk about my recovery experience a little and how it relates to treating periodontal disease and other health conditions. I also give a quick review of the origin of A Tooth Has Four Parts and what its primary purpose is (probably not what you think). Finally, I talk about why I podcast. Enjoy and share if you feel so inclined.
I share a brief comment about having multiple insurance policies. It isn't what you might be expecting. thestillpoint.substack.com

A talk about Christmas from a more adult perspective.
Children love wonder and repetition. They want the same stories over and over. Although adults enjoy providing Christmas to children which involves wrapping gifts and reading same-old stories over and over, they hope for a little more. Where children want a magical time, adults want a meaningful one. Repeating or doubling down on what worked before never works quite as well again, so in this podcast we will take a new path and I will tell grownups a new, and yes, deeper story.
How do you look for medical and dental information? And when you find it on the Internet, what do you do with it? How do you know from an Internet Search who you should see for care? The answer, according to Dr. Young, is it depends on who you are.
Some tips to help you manage dental fear in yourself and in children.
In this podcast you learn about my Airstream, my mom, and the most important question the world is struggling with right now. Thanks to all of you patients who are giving me such encouraging feedback. I talk about that too.

That's right. Think for yourself – even if you disagree with me and others. It sounds strange that I would say this to you I know, and that is because there is an initial desire to be agreed with. How much easier would it be if you just did what I told you? It is an enticing thought, because my day would flow so much smoother. Everyone would fall in line and do what I say. It is the highest form of human power, is it not? to speak and have others move – without argument, without discussions. But here is the problem...
So, what counters this natural tendency to play the victim in my own life? How can I not fume at every stop light or slow driver who happens to be in front of me? On the one hand, I can scold myself – tell myself to shape up and be nicer. But I have two problems with this approach. First, I think it lowers my mood – which I frankly don't want to do if I can help it, and second, it doesn't work. Instead of just getting down on myself, my approach is to practice respect...
Throughout my professional career it has repeatedly been brought home to me that if I fail to explain clearly enough for patients to become comfortable with the decisions they will make, it will affect the treatment I am able to provide them. This means I have to schedule time at the beginning of care for them to be able to talk and for me to listen...
