Understanding the cost of periodontal treatment is essential, but choosing care based solely on price without knowing all options can lead to unnecessary expenses and complications. Dr. Ben Young emphasizes the importance of informed decision-making and warns against profit-driven practices that may cut corners on patient care. He strongly recommends LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) over traditional surgical treatments for gum disease due to its effectiveness, shorter healing time, and lower cost when compared with other therapies that omit the electromagnetic energy component. To make LANAP more accessible, he has reduced its price to align with the cost of a single crown or root canal, making it a more affordable option than extensive periodontal surgery. Insurance coverage for periodontal treatment can be complex and misleading, often leaving patients with unexpected out-of-pocket costs, so understanding policy limitations is crucial. Finally, Dr. Young offers free gum health screenings to help patients assess their needs and connect with trusted general dentists to make sure dental health is maintained long term. Competition is being touted as a possible answer to banks' climate informed decisions. NZ First Minister Shane Jones has spoken out against several banks' attempts to reduce lending and services to fossil fuel businesses - decisions he says are driven by "unelected climate apostles". Federated Farmers banking spokesperson Richard McIntyre told Andrew Dickens that if new legislation came forward, he would like businesses to have other options. He says that if banks decide they're the moral police of the country, there needs to be enough competition so that those they decline can get lending elsewhere. People in Clare are being urged to make informed decisions around what gets poured down the sink in the process of cooking Christmas dinner. Ahead of the big day, Clean Coasts and Uisce Eireann are appealing to people not to pour fats, oils, and greases from cooking down the sink as they can cause blockages and buildups called fatbergs. The 'Think Before You Pour' campaign is instead urging all prospective chefs to let all cooking oils too cool before binning and to scrape all greases off pans before washing them. Lahinch native and Clean Coasts', Think Before You Pour Campaign Officer, Patrick Cross, says although the amount of oil poured down drains has reduced, its still a major issue around Christmas.
