How to consume information in the new age? (E·135) We're discussing a topic that touches upon the aspect of content consumption in the new age, and learning. Especially in today's world, where there are multiple means through which we're constantly consuming content, is having information equivalent to knowledge. Sure, etymologically speaking knowledge is derived from the word “know” and therefore the two words information and knowledge can be synonymous. However, semantically speaking they are worlds apart. Perhaps information is cheaply available whereas what we make of that information can determine one's knowledge. Continuing from our previous conversation about creative block, in this conversation, we try to find the genesis of creation. We look at if we can find a means of creating. What role does Artificial Intelligence have to play in creation in the coming future? We also look at the three facets of creation that bring to realization of thought into manifestation. We've been offline lately, and that's because we've been swamped with work. Real apologies for being inconsistent for that. We've also been feeling a little creative block, and instead of trying to find a solution for this issue, we thought of recording our conversation to see where it takes us. We all are creative individuals. Yes, even the so called “non-creative” ones. We're all creating something all the time. If not anything, at least the stories in our head. But an intentful creation requires a state of flow, and sometimes you feel stagnated – like what happened to us. We hope that this conversation allows us to A. find the creative side that resides within us, and B. find ways for mending through this creative block… Let us know your thoughts. _ Our aim at THIRTEEN is to find meaning in the everyday mundane and help people find their purpose and inner balance. When I was growing up, I thought that meditation was that yogis and sanyasis did. They all had to leave their home and renounce their material possessions and go in search for enlightenment. As I grew, I thought the purpose of it is for inner peace. We often get confused with meditation with these extremes. There could be various reasons that we choose to meditate. The other part is that meditation need not be about closing the eyes and becoming quiet or focusing on one's breath. Among the several definitions that we byhearted during our schooling was of Newton's First Law of Motion. It states that every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change by an external force. Likewise, we all resist change unless it is direly needed. We all read biographies, autobiographies of various people. And the takeaways from these readings are the experiences, the memories, and the learnings they had in their life. Now, if these experiences, memories and learnings is what makes them, then if we're able to put what is our perceived future in the hindsight and see the person we have become then we can clearly see the possibility of making who we are is within ourself. A word of caution though, this episode is not essentially a “how to” but more of a quest in finding these means of relaxation. Self-care is not a discipline, it is a choice. Often, we struggle in defining what is right for us. Well there isn't one right answer. However, learning to exercise the appropriate choice can do wonder. In this conversation, we're not discussing what is the right choice, for most of the time we already know it. We're neither discussing how to exercise the right choice, simply because that too we already know. Nike says "Just Do It." What does it really mean? Phil Knight's philosophy and what Nike meant to him narrated by Simon Sinek initiates this conversation, and then we try and decode what "Just Do It." means to us. _ Transcript of Simon Sinek's Audio Clip: The way that Phil Knight used to talk about Nike, I don't know if you've heard the story. He was speaking at a large conference, and he stood up and he said to the audience: If any of you have ever run for exercise, can you please stand up? Most of the room stood up. He said, if you run at least once a week, continue standing up else please sit down; most of the room sits down. He said, if you run twice a week, please keep standing. A few more sit down. He says, if you run three times a week, rain or shine - regardless of the weather, or the temperature, please keep standing. There are now barely a few people in the room, who're standing, and he looks out at them and he says that the next time you're out there before the sun is up, it's dark, it's cold, and it's wet, and you're running by yourself, we're the ones standing under the lamp post, cheering you on. That's how he described Nike. And, in an instant, you understand what “Just Do It!” means! It has nothing to do with winning. It has everything to do with trying. It has everything with doing. And, his story, his narrative, captures that so exquisitely, and when Nike is at their best, they celebrate the ones who do, not the ones who win. _ If you like this episode, share this with your friends. The first time I came across somebody who could flick pages and read a book was Vici the robot from the 80's show Small Wonder! But that fascinated me. Let me first begin by saying that this episode is not a philosophical conversation, but rather an enquiry into the construction of our own identity, and the impact it has on us. The power of "I" is in knowing it, not in knowing it as we've constructed the image of "I". A lot of times, our understanding of ourselves - as we refer to as "I" is clouded with biases. In that spirit, we intend to ask the question Who is "I"? _ If you like this episode, share this with your friends. In this digital world, we're governed by algorithms. Right from content consumption to our buying habits, from personal data monitoring to tracking of our emotions, everything seems to be using algorithms to control our being. But, is that really true? Were there algorithms even before the computer codes that read our minds? Are there algorithms present in a world outside of a digital world - a real world that we live in? _ If you like this episode, share this with your friends. Here are two men discussing in this conversation the casual sexism that lingers around, and what women must be experiencing. At one level, this discussion is important and on another level can we as men, even experience a fraction of what the women are experiencing? If one is not self-sufficient with love, emotion, generosity, or kindness then it becomes very difficult for one to even empathize with their own self. And, in this competitive world, we're experts in creating unwanted, unwarranted pressures on ourselves. It is, therefore, necessary (and vital) to realise that it is okay to slow down a bit and to allow ourselves to be in the situation that we are in. Today's conversation on self-compassion is about finding for ourselves what it means and its relevance in the present context. _ If you like this episode, share this with your friends. What is it with ruthless compassion? We see it and celebrate it when we hear instances of such examples... then be it stories of Steve Jobs, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Le Corbusier or Mahatma Gandhi...we have seen them being ruthless (and at times almost heartless) with their pupils. Is the seemingly paradoxical phrase the basis for something genius? Or is it downright cruel?
