With an accessible beauty, he shows how the ordinary things we do—mending, seed-saving, composting, and birding—can become new parables that might help us make hope where it is least felt and most needed. Meditative, inviting, and prayerful, Van Horn's writing compassionately makes space and time for readers to experience the meaningful practice of hope. O'neil Van Horn is assistant professor, theology, Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH. In this episode, I share what my life was like before, during, and after a spiritual awakening that occurred while I was sober and active in Alcoholics Anonymous. At 27 years old, two years sober, and deeply immersed in A.A./12 Steps, something happened that completely altered how I experienced reality. While working in a warehouse listening to music, the sense of “me” collapsed. Time, identity, and space dissolved, revealing an unmistakable unity of self, other, and existence itself. In this talk, I reflect on: Life before awakening: addiction, avoidance, and chasing what feels good. Early sobriety and how I used the 12 Steps as a way to manage discomfort. The spiritual experience that changed my relationship to thought, emotion, and identity. Why I suddenly began seeing thoughts instead of being lost in them. How this experience was misunderstood in A.A. and why it concerned others. The absence of language, framework, or teachers at the time. The years that followed: creativity, self-creation, and eventual collapse. Why existential despair came after awakening, not before. This is not a teaching, a prescription, or a claim of enlightenment. It's a personal reflection on sobriety, awareness, and what happens when insight arrives without a container to hold it. If you're interested in meditation, non-duality, recovery, or the intersection between spirituality and real life, this conversation is for you.

This conversation centers on choiceless awareness: the recognition that there is no personal will, or control, and that everything—thoughts, emotions, actions, reactions—is arising spontaneously on its own. I talk about: Life before awakening and why revisiting that contrast is important. How recovery, 12-step work, and gratitude shaped my relationship to suffering. Why meditation is not something you do, but something that's already happening. What it means to rest as consciousness itself—without effort, discipline, or belief. How seeing the illusion of free will naturally softens judgment and resistance. Why this recognition doesn't eliminate emotions, but instead loosens their grip over time. This dialogue is less about philosophy and more about direct experience. Nothing shared needs to be believed, or agreed with, intellectually. It's an invitation to notice what's already happening—internally and externally—and to explore what it's like to simply relax into being. In the next episode, I'll share the full story of what life was like before, during, and after my waking-up experience. If you have questions, or want me to clarify something, please let me know in the comments—I'm happy to take another crack at it. Imagine a process that can bypass our dominant, loves-to-be-in-control brain and open a subtle energetic pathway to help us sense and feel the many dimensions of the Universalis human. A deeper contemplative process of feelings and intuition, not fixed mental boundaries. In the newest Universalis Project conversation, Aviv Shahar, Karen Heney and Kyriaki Nikandrou explore the potential of a guided meditative process in expanding access to our universal nature. They demonstrate several pathways in an abiding circle meditation, a process that focuses the creative energy generated in the shared ecology of a group contemplation. The circle meditation is a healing journey of inner discovery that invites us to metabolize and release pain and trauma. It builds inner conductivity and activates latent capacities and sense organs that enable deeper registrations of our universalis possibility. Other insights from Aviv, Karen and Kyriaki include:By abiding with inquiries in collective circle meditations, we unlock different processes, shifting from mental references to a whole person melting, merging, and harmonizing of different feelings and inner states. We are not one thing; we are multiple lives within; a soul, spirit and many other capacities. A struggle emerges as this orchestra faces the demands of an exterior world while forever harmonizing the interior life.Meditative abiding engenders greater awareness of the subtle bodies of somatic and mental processes. Each organ has its energetic body; together they constitute a configuration of presences. We shrink and separate ourselves by all sorts of modern conventions, but spiritual traditions and texts invite us to realize we are the crown jewel of the universal process here on this planet. The nature of universal love is that we are never alone, even when we feel lonely. The spiritual source of this love is forever around us with healing and possibility. This conversation is part of the continuing Portals discovery into what is emerging on the frontiers of human experience in this time of profound change. Information about upcoming special events can be found on the Events page. Also visit and subscribe to our YouTube channel. TWEETABLE QUOTES “The Universalis human will also not arise through some techno-utopian version of ourselves. We are not likely to find the Universalis human arising in silicon, or in sophisticated computer chips. My conviction, my belief, is that the birthing of a new human possibility, the suggestion is that the Universalis permission, the Universalis possibility, the Universalis activation, occurs inside us and in between us.” (Aviv)“Wherever you will find a group of people who are interested in how we humans are evolving, both to solve the existential problems that the meta-crisis brought to us, and even more so to do so by unlocking our latent potential, the way we go about cultivating our interior inquiries and contemplations, individually and collectively, we are leaning into these possibilities, which is, how can we be part - a co-creative, co-participative part - of the rise of a universal human?” (Aviv) RESOURCES MENTIONED Portals of Perception WebsiteAviv's LinkedIn Aviv's TwitterAviv's WebsiteThe Universalis Project #15: Pathways to Universal Life

Send us a textWhat if love didn't start with your effort but with God's presence moving toward you? This guided, unhurried reading of 1 John 4:7–21 explores a radical claim—God is love—and shows how that truth can steady anxious hearts, transform relationships, and make faith visible in everyday life.We walk through the text line by line, hearing how the sending of Jesus redefines love as concrete and self-giving. Together we consider why living in love means living in God, how the Spirit anchors our assurance, and what it looks like to “live like Jesus” in the world. The passage dismantles the fear of punishment, replacing it with confidence rooted in perfect love that drives out fear. Then it turns the spotlight on practice: if we say we love God, we must love the people we can see—especially the difficult ones. That challenge is not a burden to earn approval but an overflow of being loved first.Along the way, we pause for reflection. What is your picture of God? How does that picture shape your capacity to receive love and extend it to others? With a simple invitation to open your hands and welcome a fresh touch of grace, this episode blends scripture, stillness, and honest questions that lead to action. If you've been craving a faith that feels less like striving and more like abiding, these words offer both clarity and comfort.Listen and share with someone who needs courage today. Mapping Complex Mind States: EEG Neural Substrates of Meditative Unified Compassionate AwarenessIn this episode, Dr. Jud Brewer and Dr. Poppy Schoenberg explore the neural mechanisms behind advanced meditative states, specifically those linked to non-duality, emptiness, and awakened awareness. Using EEG, this study mapped brain activity during different stages of Indo-Tibetan essence-of-mind meditation, revealing decreased self-referential processing and increased executive control in regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex and insula. The findings suggest that meditative states of deep compassion and awareness involve distinct neural patterns, challenging conventional models of consciousness. Tune in to discover how meditation transforms the brain and fosters selfless awareness.Full Reference:Schoenberg, P. L. A., Rufa, A., Churchill, J., Brown, D. P., & Brewer, J. A. (2018). On this one Jared and I sat down with our friend Ryan Teague from Feather and Finch Photography all the way on the Gold Coast of Australia. Ryan is one of those rare photographers who has been wildly “successful” on paper, shooting 120 plus weddings a year, and still had the courage to ask if any of it actually lined up with the life he wanted. We talk about falling in and out of love with photography, what it does to your heart to be a dad to a son with special needs, why surfing every sunrise might be a better business plan than your current workflow, and how much more powerful your work becomes when you stop trying to impress the internet and start trying to really serve the people in front of your lens.If you have ever looked at your own work and thought “this came too easy, is it really worth what I am charging” or felt that quiet little pull to slow down and be more present, this episode is going to hit you in the best way.In this episode we get into:The 120 weddings a year seasonHow Ryan built a fast growing brand on the Gold Coast, what it felt like when the work was almost too easy, and why that started to mess with his sense of value.Falling out of love and finding it againThe honest side of running your own business for years, the seasons where you could not care less about picking up a camera, and the small shifts that brought him back.Rethinking “candid” and “documentary”Ryan talks about how couples use these words, what they actually expect on the wedding day, and how he now has very specific conversations up front so the experience matches the marketing.Empathy first, ego secondWe talk about the difference between being the entertainer at the center of the room and being the quiet presence that makes the room feel safe, and why he is willing to sacrifice a perfect frame if it means his couple stays grounded.Meditative portraits and quiet framesHow music, stillness, and silence shape the way Ryan shoots portraits, why he chases “quiet” images, and what it looks like to invite a couple into a slower, more intentional moment on their wedding day.Parenting, disability, and a very different true northRyan shares how being a dad to a ten year old with cerebral palsy and autism has completely changed his priorities and made it very hard to care about the little vanity games we all get sucked into in this industry.Designing a slower life on purposeSunrise surf sessions, short office days, training, and building a rhythm that actually supports his health and his family instead of constantly demanding more from them.Aftercast preview inside PHOTOCOIn the Aftercast for members we dig into the actual questions Ryan asks his couples, how he prepares them for a more meditative experience, and how he is thinking about storytelling over an entire wedding day as his style shifts.Listen to more episodes and read the show notesPhotographic Collective Podcast homehttps://www.mileswittboyer.com/podcastJoin PHOTOCO and get the Aftercast with RyanPhotographic Collective membership and training platformhttps://www.mileswittboyer.com/photoLearn more about the Photographic Collective communityhttps://www.mileswittboyer.com/photographic-collectiveFeather and Finch Photographyhttps://www.featherandfinchphotography.com.auFeather and Finch on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/featherandfinchphotographyMiles Witt BoyerWebsitehttps://www.mileswittboyer.comInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/mileswittboyerJared Mark FincherWebsitehttps://www.jaredmarkfincher.comInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/jaredmarkfincherIf you are new around here, the Photographic Collective Podcast is basically Jared and me sitting down with people we really respect and pulling on the threads that actually matter. This 10-min meditative doodling practice is here to help you get out of creative spiraling, and soften the overwhelm you might be experiencing. (This is a re-aired episode from 2024). About mePascale Côté is a creativity guide, therapeutic arts practitioner, artist, and writer who helps creatives meet, understand, and express themselves by guiding them to work *with* their (creative, complex, unconventional) nature instead of against it. She helps artists, visionaries, disruptors and earth stewards break free from the vortex of overthinking and move forward with their bold, rebellious ideas. Her work challenges conventional norms, inviting creatives to explore what's possible when they release outdated narratives and embrace their true, authentic expression. Pascale believes that art is a powerful vehicle for both individual and collective change when it's grounded in truth—created outside the rigid systems that stifle our creative spirit.About the podcastCreative minds are the architects of a new world, and their art holds the keys to reimagining our reality. The challenge is, creative minds often spend just as much time crafting self-limiting narratives as they do creating their art. Dear Creative Mind is a space for creative liberation—a pathway out of the cycle of overthinking, burnout, and stagnation. This podcast is for artists & creative entrepreneurs where Pascale, creativity guide, shares grounding meditations, gentle coaching guidance and heartfelt conversations with inspiring artists. When I first came across my guest on social media, I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. His interactions with the animals wasn't only unique and intriguing, but I found a sense of calm come over me. Plume was lucky enough to have been surrounded by women all of his life. These same women are a big part of how and why he's on this journey now.  I'm so happy we were able to have a conversation, not only about his new bond with his animal audience, but he's also lending a different perspective on life and what's important. My guest's videos have a very calming effect on his audience. Yet, in seeing how the animals interact with Plume brings a smile to my face and a more human perspective to the magic of the beautiful four and two legged creatures he interacts with.Currently, Valerie, Plume's mother, is part of his production crew, as his camera-woman. She has always been very supportive of his work. His maternal grandmother, Paule and her three sisters helped raise Plume since a child.  Paule is still very present in his life today. She plays the piano and has a wonderful sense of humor and attitude about life. And we also had an opportunity to hear about Elsa, Plume's girlfriend, who Plume says is a constant source of support and love. As a creative, Plume says "it can be hard to believe in yourself and in what you're doing," and Elsa has always been there to encourage him.Growing up in France, Plume was introduced to cows nearby to his grandmother's home. HIs grandmother's sister, who knew the cows the best, reassured him at a young age, that they were friendly, kind and curious. One of the more rare and distinct animals that Plume has encountered is an okapi. An okapi is not a true "mix" of animals but is the only living relative of the giraffe.I thoroughly enjoyed meeting my guest and sharing his story of bountiful love and support from the many important women in his life. And my guest is also very gracious and sincere when he says he's so fortunate to get get the opportunity to share his love of music with these beautiful creatures in the preserves and his human audience around the world wide. SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS:IG: Plumesofficiel       FB:Plumes "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Sonia C. is joining in from London, and she is loving the chance to live life in the moment. It's one of her favorite forms of meditation! From resetting a frayed nervous system to focusing inward rather than on the chaos that is swirling around all of us, living in the moment brings bursts of creativity and connects us to our portals of intuitive listening.    This week's theme is: Find your personal lane of meditation.    Highlights: Nothing beats living in the moment. [:30]  Sonia T.'s intuitive listening led her to the thrift shop! [4:35]  Nothing calms a barking dog like meditation. [6:34]  What if I can't sit still long enough to meditate? [8:18] Transmissions of peace from Nana. [11:15] Sonia C.'s update from London. [13:26]  Scan the field and listen to those vibrations. [18:54] Intention first, then connection. [26:04]  Engage your senses and your intuition will follow. [31:13]  Tool of the Week: Get a ribbon and move your body! [43:25]  Question of the Week: Is the voice that guides me back to calm my spirit? [48:46]   The world feels so unstable right now, but we've got the perfect way to center yourself and quiet all of the noise. Get lost in the moment. Go for a walk, spend some time in your garden or yard, get creative. Meditation in its simplest form happens not when we are thinking, but when we are feeling. When you give yourself a moment that is worth getting lost in, you're giving yourself permission to dive into your intuitive portals.    Tune in and you'll hear exactly what the vibrations are telling you. Whether it's time to lean in or get out, being an intuitive, connected soul means that you have the power to honor your true self. Moving your hands will allow you to ease into a flow state. Clean your house, create art, or sit outside and listen with your body. We are all connected, through music, through heartbeats, and through vibrations. It's time to get out of your head and into your body. Are you ready to tune in?    Tool of the Week: Get a ribbon and move your body!
