In a sense, contemplative prayer is none other than the practice of deepening one's faith in God. But faith manifests in many guises. Perhaps a less obvious quality of faith is confidence. What does it mean to sit with a “restful confidence,” fully trusting that God is bringing about a mighty work in you? Listen to this episode as Thomas draws from the inspired thinking of Sri Aurobindo as well as a favorite scripture of his from back home. May you live prayerfully, always with a “perfect brightness of hope.” 7-day meditation retreat (September 30th - October 7th) 9-month deep dive in the contemplative life (still accepting applications)

Daria Burke is an author, executive, and healer-at-heart. She's also a grandchild grieving for her grandmother and a daughter estranged from her parents. In this episode, Daria shares the profound impact of losing her maternal grandmother at age seven and how that early loss reverberated through her life. This loss and grief exist alongside the immense healing she's done around growing up in poverty, childhood trauma, and her parents' absences, addictions, and the eventual estrangement from them. With the recent release of her memoir, Of My Own Making, Daria opens up about the moment, decades later, that reawakened the grief for her grandmother - finding a newspaper article about her fatal car accident. That discovery, and ensuing grief, started a new chapter in Daria's healing process. In our conversation, we talk about inherited trauma, the emotional weight of estrangement, the invisible grief of childhood neglect, Daria's healing practices, and how she stays connected to her grandmother through what she calls “love taps.” Key Topics: What role Daria's grandmother played in her early childhood The ongoing impacts of childhood grief and unprocessed trauma How truth-telling is part of healing The collective grief she grew up around in Detroit of the 1980's Uncovering the grief she buried after her grandmother died Grieving for family members who are still alive Grief Practices Daria Shares: Giving herself permission to cry freely Meditative practices to connect with her grandmother Volunteering on holidays and creating new rituals Finding signs from her grandmother in the world around her Daria Burke is an American writer, speaker and award-winning business leader. A marketer by trade and a seeker at heart, Daria is a storyteller and sense-maker, weaving together personal experience and the science of healing and transformation to explore new ways of understanding how we choose who we become. This passion led her to complete Dr. Tara Swart's Neuroscience for Business course at MIT and Positive Psychology and Well-Being at Stanford, taught by Dr. Daryn Reicherter, an international expert in trauma psychiatry. Her debut memoir, OF MY OWN MAKING (April 2025) explores trauma, neuroplasticity, and Post-Traumatic Growth through the lens of her own healing journey. Kiese Laymon called it “as profound a book about the treacherous experience of befriending ourselves as I've read this decade.” Part memoir, part methodology, OF MY OWN MAKING blends personal narrative with scientific insight, Daria inspires readers to reimagine the narratives that define their lives. The sound of a twig snapping in our hands has the ability to travel directly into our soul. There's more to it than just hearing the sound—it's the vibration, the frequency, and it's also your soul's history. In long ago, previous lifetimes, we gathered, stepped on, broke, carved, pointed, leaned on, and utilized sticks, branches and twigs for many reasons, such as survival and even for cultural and ritualistic reasonings. As long as humankind has been here, so have trees, shrubs and bushes, and there has been a forever relationship between humans and twigs ever since. Breaking twigs is a powerful meditation, a powerful clearing tool and rewiring mechanism that can penetrate through the walls of PTSD, wounds of hardship and mental, emotional, and even spiritual injuries and blockages that feel like something has impeded a person's progress and seems to be keeping them stuck in a vicious cycle of confusion. Healing occurs on all levels when applying this powerful meditational tool. In this episode, learn how to break twigs in a way that moves you forward. It's an experience that you will never forget in this lifetime. In this episode… Learn about a powerful rewiring tool and spiritual healing therapy and how to harness it. Discover the best methods for snapping twigs, which twigs to choose and how many you should gather for this meditation. Uncover how thousands of years ago, your soul experienced the snapping of twigs and how to connect to those experiences. Learn how this therapy and spiritual tool can rewire the consciousness, subconsciousness, brain and the soul. Discover the imprint-removing powers that snapping twigs can enact. Learn how snapping twigs can be used as a form of communication between you and others. All this and more, tune in and don't miss out on this important episode. Contemporary drawing is one of art's best kept secrets: associated with sound, language and writing, it turns contemporary art into a meditative form of art-making engaging the spectator in a poetic and existential voyage. Led by Blank's discovery of sound within the daily practice of drawing, this episode is a sonic wandering and a philosophical exploration of the artist's work, engaging with recent technological changes. How can a minimal and poetic practice face such specific issues? What is the role of the artist facing a global net of information which connects us as much as it separates us? And what is the value of communication – and of silence? Irma Blank has taught me that and much more. The avant-gardes of the 1960s–70s were proliferous in innovative and minimal methods of creativity engaging the breath, the whole body and graphic deconstructions of language. Irma Blank was one of those artists with a subversive take on traditional artistic languages. Have you ever wondered how artists and curators work together? This episode muses upon the relation between me, a young-ish curator and the artist Irma Blank, who'd reached the age of 80 when we met, along with my co-curator Johana Carrier. This episode is an excerpt of a lecture given by me on the 3rd of February 2025 at ABK Stuttgart whose title was "The Paper is Impatient", under the invitation of the drawing department, and their teachers Katrin Ströbel and Hanna Hennenkemper. The « drawing sounds » are excerpts of Irma Blank's recordings of the sound of each series. For Radical Writings, she recorded herself, breathing in and out, because that was the basis of the image's structure.Music by Sarturn.>>>>>>>For more information about the artist visit her gallery's website: P420, Bologna, Italy.DID YOU ENJOY THE EPISODE?Support us through a donation or membership.DID YOU ENJOY THE TEXT?Follow me on Substack for more topics on art, society, artists and exhibitions.SUBSCRIBE , RATE AND FOLLOW US. It is centred around the artistic practice of female German artist Irma Blank, who never stopped producing her art, whether it was shown in prestigious events such as the Venice Biennale in 1977, or it wasn't, like when her Radical Writings on canvas were deemed a form of yielding to the 80s trend of the return to painting... whereas Blank was, on the contrary, more militant than ever for her elemental forms of the line and the minimal gesture by deeply engaging with the meditative breath in relation to the line and the colour blue, which for her represented infinity. Blank passed away in 2023, leaving a potent body of work whose incredible energy leaves no spectator or curator indifferent.

“Meditation is ultimately about getting out of the way so that a greater intelligence and a higher set of capacities can begin to show up within us. We meditate so that we can unlock a deeper care, a deeper strength, a deeper willingness to trust and ultimately a completely different order of consciousness than anything we can cause through our willful effort. As we awaken, this higher consciousness then begins to express itself in all kinds of ways organically and naturally in every aspect of our life.”—Craig HamiltonIn this episode, Craig explores a challenge many of us face—how to bridge the gap between meditation and daily life. When we meditate, we step outside the usual flow of life. For a time, we pause, let go, and rest in stillness. In those moments, we may touch something vast—something free. But as soon as we return to daily life, we often find that everything shifts. Responsibilities pull us in, challenges arise, and the ease we felt in meditation can feel suddenly out of reach. Many of us try to bring meditative awareness into everything we do, hoping to sustain a sense of clarity and presence. But no matter how much effort we make, it often feels unnatural—like trying to hold on to something delicate in a world that doesn't quite accommodate it. So how do we bring awakening into action? How do we allow the deeper intelligence we touch in meditation to move through us effortlessly, shaping how we respond, engage, and act in the world? In Awakening in Daily Life, Craig offers a fresh perspective on this dilemma—one that goes beyond trying to impose meditative states onto life and instead reveals how awakening can naturally express itself in what we do.To access the full transcript of this episode and discover more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. I've had the best month in Adelaide doing my show to great audiences, winning an award in the first week and getting five star reviews! Then on Monday, my last day in town, I accidentally crushed the door of my Mum's partner's car in the carwash. It was really scary actually, and it's going to cost me $2000. I find myself here yet again, in a moment where I could have maybe slowed down a little, but felt like I had everything under control, and then realised too late that I didn't. It was a mistake, whatever, we move on, but it'd be good to learn from it too, eh? For the next week I'm back in Melbourne and working on the setup of the gallery. There's lot's to do, and I feel really stressed about it, but I'm going to find time every day to stop and take stock of everything that's around me. Have fun. Slow down. Be in the moment. Have fun.

In this episode, we're joined by Mridula Sathyanarayanan, a third-year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, majoring in neuroscience, philosophy, and Buddhist Psychology & Mental Health (BPMH). A Laidlaw Scholar, Mridula has been exploring the intersection of contemplative science and public engagement through her innovative project, *The Museum of Meditative Practices*. Her work invites us to rethink how meditation is experienced, studied, and shared, creating an interactive and educational space where diverse meditative traditions come to life. We discuss the inspiration behind her project, the challenges of translating contemplative experiences into public exhibits, and what this means for the future of contemplative science. Tune in for a conversation on the creative ways meditation can be made accessible and immersive—and why this matters for both science and practice.
