Two years ago, OpenAI's GPT-4 kick-started a new era in AI. In the months leading up to its public release, Peter Lee, president of Microsoft Research, cowrote a book full of optimism for the potential of advanced AI models to transform the world of healthcare. What has happened since? In this special podcast series—The AI Revolution in Medicine, Revisited—Lee revisits the book, exploring how patients, providers, and other medical professionals are experiencing and using generative AI today while examining what he and his coauthors got right—and what they didn't foresee. In this episode, Dr. Christopher Longhurst and Dr. Sara Murray, leading experts in healthcare AI implementation, join Lee to discuss the current state and future of AI in clinical settings. Longhurst, chief clinical and innovation officer at UC San Diego Health and executive director of the Jacobs Center for Health Innovation, details his healthcare system's collaboration with Epic and Microsoft to integrate GPT into their electronic health record system, offering clinicians support in responding to patient messages. Dr. Murray, chief health AI officer at UC San Francisco Health, discusses AI's integration into clinical workflows, the promise and risks of AI-driven decision-making, and how generative AI is reshaping patient care and physician workload.Learn more:Large Language Models for More Efficient Reporting of Hospital Quality MeasuresGenerative artificial intelligence responses to patient messages in the electronic health record: early lessons learnedThe Chief Health AI Officer — An Emerging Role for an Emerging TechnologyAI-Generated Draft Replies Integrated Into Health Records and Physicians' Electronic Communication Comparing Physician and Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Responses to Patient Questions Posted to a Public Social Media Forum The AI Revolution in Medicine: GPT-4 and Beyond

Today I have a truly groundbreaking story from one of my previous show guests Nathan Longhurst. Last time I spoke with Nathan, he was fresh off his solo ascent of the Cassin Ridge on Denali and making waves in the climbing community. At the time, he had also just discovered his next passion—paragliding. I remember joking back then, hoping he wouldn't get hurt as he dove headfirst into this new pursuit. But just a few weeks later, he crashed—breaking his pelvis.Since then, Nathan has pushed even further in fulfilling his vision of merging the sports of solo alpinism and flight. Becoming a leading pioneer in a budding new style of alpinism. His latest project in New Zealand involves  linking together 100 technical alpine peaks not just by climbing them, but also flying between them. His goal? To Successfully summit all of “New Zealand's 100 Greatest Peaks”. A curated list of New Zealand's 100 most iconic mountains that had only ever been climbed by one man Don French —a journey that took him nearly 34 years to accomplish. However, on February 27th 2025 Nathan managed to complete the entire objective in a staggering 103 days. revolutionizing what's possible in mountain travel by blending the skills of an alpinist and a foil pilot. But this wasn't just a smooth, picturesque journey through the mountains. Along the way, Nathan battled snow blindness after losing his sunglasses, survived loose rock fall that nearly ended his entire mission, and had to manage the terrifying reality of flying on a damaged wing after a failed launch high up on a rocky ridge. Every decision mattered, and with each new challenge, he was forced to recalibrate his limits, balancing the thrill of the unknown with the ever-present dangers of both the air and the mountains. This conversation goes deep. We talk about the mental and physical challenges of combining two of the most committing mountain disciplines, how his perception of risk evolved after cheating death during a crash landing due to catastrophic canopy failure…, and the logistical puzzles of executing a cutting edge project that has just simply never been done before. At the point of releasing this conversation Nathan has yet to speak with anyone about the intimate details of his experience ... .and I am honored to share his story…So nowI bring you 3 hrs of Nathan Longhurst.----HELP KEEP THIS PODCAST AD FREE! | For a little as $3/mo!----Don't forget to check out our full video episodes on Youtube! The TCM movement is growing but we need your help to spread the word! Accidental Gods
Living Well in a Tiny House with Rachel Butler and Maddy Longhurst of Bristol Tiny House Community

Accidental Gods

Our two guests this week are deeply embedded in the creation of Tiny Homes as a way for us meet the needs of all within the bounds of the living planet. Both are living absolutely at that sharp, bright edge of inter-becoming from which our more flourishing future will emerge.  Rachel Butler is the founder of Tiny House Community Bristol, Chair of Bristol Community Land Trust and is a member of Bristol's One City Homes & Communities board. Her root mission is within systems change/paradigm shift: to re-common as much land as practicable, enabling as many people as possible to move back onto and reconnect with this land, by co-creating and co-residing in Tiny House Regenerative Settlements. She believes that, at this critical time of human-created poly crisis, as the current system collapses and composts, it's also time for the human species to rejoin the web of life, in sacred reciprocity; healing our relationships to self, each other and community; not only human, but of all beings and kinds.Maddy Longhurst is a director of Tiny House Community Bristol alongside Rachel and, for the last 4-5 years has been helping to create their Tiny House development in Sea Mills, Bristol, as well as another small tiny house community off the radar. Since having to leave her rented home this August, she and her daughter have decided to exit the mainstream housing system so as to no longer be subject to its unethical, exploitative ways, but to live, for now, in the fertile margins until their tinies are created. She's UK coordinator of the Urban Agriculture Consortium, weaving relationships between people working in the urban and peri-urban agroecological transition. She is also Studio Coordinator for Constructivist, a regenerative design school for built environment professionals, and part of the Strategy circle for Bristol Commons. Some of her current areas of work are on Reimagining the Greenbelt as a place for regenerative settlements, prototyping Landed Community Kitchens and developing a model for Tiny Homes for land regenerators in the city. As you can imagine, our conversation ranged from how grinding bureaucracy so often gets in the way of genuinely restorative, regenerative practice,  to the philosophy and practices that are the foundations of the change we need to see in the world.  We explored the actual social technologies that moved things forward and learned of two workshops that sound totally transformative.  Since recording, it's become apparent that the one in Bristol with El Juego is not really open to other participants, which is sad, but I have no doubt they'll be back - and that Maddy and Rachel will be able to engage with the teaching and bring it into life here and elsewhere.  I've put links in the show notes to the Fearless Cities event in Sheffield on the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of November.  If I go, I swear I'll be at a microphone in time for the Ask Me Anything Gathering in the Accidental Gods membership that day.  This is also a good time to remind you that Dreaming your Death Awake is on the last Sunday of October, 27th from 4-8pm UK time. In 2018, at a time when the faith beat in Canadian newspapers was steadily declining, John Longhurst made an unusual deal with the publisher of the Winnipeg Free Press. He wanted to help expand the paper's audience by reporting on religion, particularly within local communities: Mennonite, Indigenous, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, whomever. The publisher thought it was a nice idea, but how would they get the money? For Longhurst, the answer wasn't difficult. He went out and fundraised it. Since then, after every other faith reporter in the country has retired, been fired or passed away, Longhurst—who is also a Winnipeg correspondent for The CJN—has found himself the last man standing in his field, his career kept afloat by annual crowdfunding campaigns. And on June 12, he is launching his new book, Can Robots Love God and Be Saved?, a collection of articles and essays he's written during his decades covering religion. Longhurst joins Ralph Benmergui, himself a spiritual director, for a zoomed-out conversation about the state of religion in Canada today: what's changed over recent decades, what the data shows and how reporting on religion has evolved. Credits Not That Kind of Rabbi is hosted by Ralph Benmergui and produced by Michael Fraiman. We're a member of The CJN Podcast Network. A wisecrack from a listener has Marty Gold recounting the history of "Hail Aurtarlia" to open Episode 34. Another listener commented about a retirement at CBC-TV, who the new Winnipeg anchor might be, and what needs to be improved in local CBC coverage- but won't be. 6.00 - Researching into the provincial budget, we flagged a few items for our upcoming interview with the CTF- including a meagre break for home security systems that the NDP refused to implement 15 years ago despite their own Speaker at the time, George Hickes, supporting our idea. We only need $405 to reach our funding goal - Donate here to help us succeed today! 12:43 Part 2- The Wab Kinew government has alloted funding to "anti-racist" education and Holocaust curriculum. Marty Gold says it's giving false hope to the community. That's because, last year the Winnipeg media blackballed coverage of the incident involving an outburst by "Free Free Palestine" University of Winnipeg Collegiate athletes at the Gray Academy Jewish campus. The Free Press couldn't even bring itself to admit the chants and gestures were antisemitic. And the Department of Education and the schools involved did nothing to get to the bottom of it. In other words, the authorities are all talk and no action when it comes to harassment and intimidation of Jewish students - and the media sides with the "protesters". 17.00 Three local newspapers have allowed bizarre, antisemitic narratives disguised as "pro Palestinian" activism to be published without balance or challenge to the inherent anti-Zionist messaging. - The Manitoban has ceaselessly promoted a concept put before the University of Manitoba Student's Union to adopt a definition of "Anti-Palestinianism' invented by an national Arab lawyers group. You'll hear how Rhonda Spivak dismantled the notion the proposal is any equivalent to the IHRA definition of antisemitism. "The proposed definition of anti-Palestinian racism will not allow for supporters of Israel to present their viewpoint on campus, or criticize Hamas or the Palestinian side in any way, without running afoul of the definition of "Nakba Denial" ... anyone speaking in favour of a two-state solution, Canada's stated policy, will run afoul of the definition of Nakba Denial in the proposed definition before UMSU." In other words, it's antisemitic. - The Winnipeg Sun without hesitation printed a letter to the editor that claimed the October 7 massacres was a "false flag" operation falsely blamed on Hamas - as rancid a conspiracy theory as can be imagined. Yet the newspaper published it. 21.30 Meanwhile the Free Press, still reeling from the blowback to a Jen Zoratti column about October 7th, was embarrassed by an Honest Reporting Canada investigation into a column by far-left Faith reporter John Longhurst. Longhurst performed stenography duty for the antisemitic Mennonite Central Committee, which claimed Israel was withholding food aid from Gazans. "On the day Longhurst's article was published, well over 200 trucks filled with humanitarian aid entered Gaza, in addition to 159 tonnes of additional aid airdropped over the coastal territory. The next day, 258 humanitarian aid trucks entered Gaza, 166 of which carried food, well over twice the amount that was entering the enclave prior to the war." As we explain, when the media repeats misinformation and slanted reporting assailing Israel for carrying out a "genocide" and deliberate starvation, Marxist politicians like Nahanni Fontaine repeats the narrative of Jew-haters, citing the Fake News media reports. To the dismay of militant Palestinians, Mayor Gillingham has stood his ground and refused pressure to add a "ceasefire now" motion to a city council agenda, after Wab Kinew caved in to them. MSM won't ask, but we do- When the Iranian-funded "Al Quds Day" comes to Winnipeg, will the Mayor and Premier tolerate a thousand pro-terrorist marchers calling for "Intifada revolution" and the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Israel?

Pat Ruddy may be known to many of you as the owner and course designer of The European Club located at Brittas Bay, Co. Wicklow. That association is central to his story, however, it does not tell the full tale. In addition to course design Mr Ruddy is a Golf Journalist, Author, Bibliophile, Historian and Magazine publisher. A native of Ballymote, Co. Mayo, Ruddy would often cycle 20 miles from his home in Ballymote to play the great coastal links of County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point, where he was a member. His early days in Ballymote fueled his love of the game of golf and those that wrote about it like Longhurst, Warren-Wind and Darwin. He completed his first design for Castlecomer GC in 1969 and would go on to make revisions at Ballyliffin (Old), Rosapenna (OTM), County Sligo (Championship) and Donegal (Murvagh) in addition to new courses at Rosapenna (Sandy Hills), Ballyliffin (Glashedy), Druids Glen, Druids Heath, St Margarets and 36 at Club de Golf de l'Île de Montréal in Canada. This is part one of the Pat Ruddy story, we hope you enjoy our chat! Intro and outro music - _Shoreline Serenade by Dye O _- under license from Epidemic Sound Special Guest: Pat Ruddy.

In the last episode of the season, Episode 115, our resident coach, Fiona Pawley, talks with Aly King-Smith, Founding Director of Clearworks Coaching; A team of coaches offering bespoke leadership development and coaching for individuals, groups and teams in STEM, Biotech & Pharma. Their mission to bring about more healthy, happy, high performing leadership confidence in the senior teams of STEM, Biotech and Pharma. Listen as Fiona and Aly talk about how Clearworks supports senior leaders who are moving from their technical and scientific backgrounds into impactful senior leadership roles. The transition from smart technical expert into inspirational, charismatic leader is no mean feat. There's a whole new world of skills and behaviours needed, to feel confident and balanced setting the vision and direction, and communicating that across a team. No longer do the measures of accuracy, fact and data work, once we're leading people. Nothing that we measured ourselves upon, throughout our early academic career is relevant now, as we step up into the strategic and people-focused roles. Good news the Lab to leadership™ solution addresses exactly this; supporting retention of emerging leadership talent, developing their confidence and enabling them to find their own leadership voice and style. Coming in spring 2024 is the Lab to leadership™ Podcast hosted by Aly and the Clearworks coaching team which will provide tools, inspiration and support for leaders within STEM organisations who have responsibility for developing talent. Aly and Fiona also find time to talk about the interesting inclusion debate held at the recent Silverstone Technology Cluster Conference (link below*) and how limiting inclusion can limit innovation. Finally, the joys of driving their first cars; which Aly's happened to be driving a Jago Jeep across the Cheshire salt plains.   Links: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alykingsmith/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/clearworks-coaching/ https://clearworkscoaching.co.uk/solutions/lab-to-leadership * https://youtu.be/7ZRV-ucV7RA?si=WED8vnqzAZZAhwgx   Leave a review!   Don't forget to check out the Inside Silverstone website for more great content. Episode 13 looks at antisemitism in Winnipeg media, concealed under the guise of far-left "intersectionality" and claims that it's only anti-Zionism, not antisemitism. Even with Justin Trudeau shoveling millions of dollars annually into the newspaper, the Winnipeg Free Press needs every reader and advertiser they can get. But when the pages are filled with slanted reporting and mean-spirited opinions that insult the public, it's a losing battle. 3.00 - To stem the tide, WFP editor Paul Samyn emailed a mea culpa to readers on Jan. 24. This was after blatant failures to flag a sexist column by Tom Brodbeck about former Premier Heather Stefanson ("for that we apologize"); an unhinged attack on unvaccinated Manitobans that "provided us with no immunity against the criticism that came our way"; and ongoing complaints about coverage of the Gaza War. You'll hear how his "adjusting the mix on our letters page" instead opened the door last Saturday to Hamas-supporting leftists- who laugh about the paper being their useful idiots. Samyn assured readers their feedback was "helping the Free Press be stronger, a trusted place you can turn to for defining the news of the day and debating the issues of our time." In less than 48 hours, he was forced to eat his words. 11:00 Part 2- Three columns in the Winnipeg Jewish Review provided a scathing rebuke to a review by Jen Zoratti of an event hosted by Gail Asper exposing the sexual violence of Hamas on Oct. 7. First, Marty Gold reads some of the unbelievably rancid comments from Zoratti. Then, he recaps the op-ed of Jessica Cogan, herself a feminist, who was at the program on January 24 at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. "I am left wondering how Ms. Zoratti could have left that program with the viewpoint that she did, without even a shred of compassion for the victims discussed that evening... she goes on to scold us for the way we are being forced to "bear witness". Does Ms. Zoratti live under a rock?"  "Ms. Zoratti then accuses the Jewish Community, including Jewish women, of exploiting "women's bodies to drive a political agenda and justify violence." This is victim-blaming of the highest order. In what gender studies classes did Ms. Zoratti learn this approach?" Cogan asked, "Would Ms. Zoratti go to an event hosted by the Muslim, Black, or Indigenous communities and have the audacity to "what about" them? Tellingly, Ms. Zoratti had no hesitation in doing so to the Jewish Community. Again, it speaks for itself." Samyn may have to issue another mea culpa, since "The one glaring omission from Ms. Zoratti's opinion was any hint of compassion or empathy towards the Israeli victims or the members of Winnipeg's Jewish community who assembled that evening." 22:54 Part 3- We tell you how Larry Pinsky, a Winnipeg lawyer, went even further in his op-ed, Holocause Remembrance And October 7: How Do You Fix A Problem Like Zoratti? "Ms. Zoratti, who usually is held out in the paper as an entertainment columnist... denigrated the survivors and victims of the mass sexual assaults and other crimes committed by Hamas and their co-conspirators." "Ms. Zoratti paid lip service to believing that these vile crimes were committed, using the word "ostensibly" (and) takes aim at the solemn presentation of the proof of Hamas's crimes... She said that the solemn evening veered into "agitprop". " "While Ms. Zoratti might have a political agenda, and while she might want to gas light in the tradition of her Marxist forbearers, the facts are the facts... To top off this tripe, Ms. Zoratti abused her presence at this earnest evening to accuse Israel of apartheid." 31:32 Part 4- WJR editor Rhonda Spivak piled on another problem for Samyn, after Faith reporter John Longhurst tweeted "great column" to Zoratti. "(He) has set back interfaith relations... How does Longhurst  propose to repair that which he has damaged?" And, we wonder, how will his boss? Comments/Support via Interac: martygoldlive@gmail.com

We should strive to choose goals in life that will challenge us, test us and that we think are impossible. Only through aiming at the highest peaks we can possibly envision will we truly transcend the suffering of the world to find meaning and purpose. For some this may be being a good life partner, having kids and enjoying the outdoors. For others it may mean climbing the wildest and gnarliest lines possible. Our guest today at the age of 23 has managed to complete a lifetime of climbing accomplishments and he's just getting started. Nathan Longhurst is an endurance athlete and climber. In our conversation we discuss how he climbed the infamous Bulger's List at the age of 21. This consists of climbing Washington's 100 highest peaks. As crazy as that is, it pales in comparison to his journey climbing the Sierra Peak Section (SPS) which involved climbing 247 peaks in 138 days. This accomplishment is mind blowing and a true feat of grit, endurance and logistics. Finally we chat about Nathan's solo ascent of Denali's infamous Cassin Ridge. Clips : MUST SEE: Microscopic Video of Engineered Bio Structures Removed from Blood Vessels – Mike Adams NZ Scientist Examines Pfizer Jab Under The Microscope Neil Oliver Wakes Up With Dr Tess Lawrie One Acupuncture Treatment Drops Blood Pressure For Over a Month Without Medication Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine and University of California, Irvine , August 21, 2022 Emerging evidence from a research study shows acupuncture may be an effective treatment for hypertension. Acupuncture regulates blood pressure, blood flow and body temperature. Patients with hypertension treated with acupuncture experienced drops in their blood pressure that lasted up to a month and a half, researchers with the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine have found. Their work is the first to scientifically confirm that this ancient Chinese practice is beneficial in treating mild to moderate hypertension, and it indicates that regular use could help people control their blood pressure and lessen their risk of stroke and heart disease. “This clinical study is the culmination of more than a decade of bench research in this area,” said Dr. John Longhurst, a University of California, Irvine cardiologist and former director of the Samueli Center. “By using Western scientific rigor to validate an ancient Eastern therapy, we feel we have integrated Chinese and Western medicine and provided a beneficial guideline for treating a disease that affects millions in the U.S.” Longhurst and his UCI colleagues Dr. Peng Li and Stephanie Tjen-A-Looi conducted tests on 65 hypertensive patients who were not receiving any hypertension medication. Separated randomly into two groups, the subjects were treated with electroacupuncture – a form of the practice that employs low-intensity electrical stimulation – at different acupoints on the body. In one group of 33 receiving electroacupuncture on both sides of the inner wrists and slightly below each knee, the researchers found a noticeable drop in blood pressure rates in 70 percent of participants – an average of 6 to 8 mmHg for systolic blood pressure (the high number) and 4 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure (the low number). These improvements persisted for a month and a half. Also in this group, the team identified significant declines in blood concentration levels of norepinephrine (41 percent), which constricts blood vessels and increases blood pressure and glucose levels; and renin (67 percent), an enzyme produced in the kidneys that helps control blood pressure. In addition, the electroacupuncture decreased aldosterone (22 percent), a hormone that regulates electrolytes. No consequential blood pressure changes were found in the group of 32 who received electroacupuncture at other acupoints along the forearm and lower leg. Although the blood pressure reductions in the first cohort were relatively small – mostly in the 4-to-13-mmHg range – the researchers noted that they were clinically meaningful and that the technique could be especially useful in treating systolic hypertension in patients over 60. “Because electroacupuncture decreases both peak and average systolic blood pressure over 24 hours, this therapy may decrease the risk for stroke, peripheral artery disease, heart failure and myocardial infarction in hypertensive patients,” Longhurst said. Vitamin C may encourage blood cancer stem cells to die New York University Langone Health. August 17, 2022 Vitamin C may “tell” faulty stem cells in the bone marrow to mature and die normally, instead of multiplying to cause blood cancers. This is the finding of a study led by researchers from Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health, and published online in the journal Cell. Certain genetic changes are known to reduce the ability of an enzyme called TET2 to encourage stem cells to become mature blood cells, which eventually die, in many patients with certain kinds of leukemia, say the authors. The new study found that vitamin C activated TET2 function in mice engineered to be deficient in the enzyme. “We're excited by the prospect that high-dose vitamin C might become a safe treatment for blood diseases caused by TET2-deficient leukemia stem cells, most likely in combination with other targeted therapies,” says corresponding study author Benjamin G. Neel, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Medicine and director of the Perlmutter Cancer Center. Changes in the genetic code (mutations) that reduce TET2 function are found in 10 percent of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 30 percent of those with a form of pre-leukemia called myelodysplastic syndrome, and in nearly 50 percent of patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. Such cancers cause anemia, infection risk, and bleeding as abnormal stem cells multiply in the bone marrow until they interfere with blood cell production, with the number of cases increasing as the population ages. The study results revolve around the relationship between TET2 and cytosine, one of the four nucleic acid “letters” that comprise the DNA code in genes. Every cell type has the same genes, but each gets different instructions to turn on only those needed in a given cellular context. These “epigenetic” regulatory mechanisms include DNA methylation, the attachment of a small molecule termed a methyl group to cytosine bases that shuts down the action of a gene containing them. The back- and-forth attachment and removal of methyl groups also fine-tunes gene expression in stem cells, which can mature, specialize and multiply to become muscle, bone, nerve, or other cell types. This happens as the body first forms, but the bone marrow also keeps pools of stem cells on hand into adulthood, ready to become replacement cells as needed. In leukemia, signals that normally tell a blood stem cell to mature malfunction, leaving it to endlessly multiply and “self-renew” instead of producing normal white blood cells needed to fight infection. The enzyme studied in this report, Tet methylcytosine dioxygenase 2 (TET2), enables a change in the molecular structure (oxidation) of methyl groups that is needed for them to be removed from cytosines. This “demethylation” turns on genes that direct stem cells to mature, and to start a count-down toward self-destruction as part of normal turnover. This serves as an anti-cancer safety mechanism, one that is disrupted in blood cancer patients with TET2 mutations, says Neel. To determine the effect of mutations that reduce TET2 function in abnormal stem cells, the research team genetically engineered mice such that the scientists could switch the TET2 gene on or off. Similar to the naturally occurring effects of TET2 mutations in mice or humans, using molecular biology techniques to turn off TET2 in mice caused abnormal stem cell behavior. Remarkably, these changes were reversed when TET2 expression was restored by a genetic trick. Previous work had shown that vitamin C could stimulate the activity of TET2 and its relatives TET1 and TET3. Because only one of the two copies of the TET2 gene in each stem cell is usually affected in TET2-mutant blood diseases, the authors hypothesized that high doses of vitamin C, which can only be given intravenously, might reverse the effects of TET2 deficiency by turning up the action of the remaining functional gene. Indeed, they found that vitamin C did the same thing as restoring TET2 function genetically. By promoting DNA demethylation, high-dose vitamin C treatment induced stem cells to mature, and also suppressed the growth of leukemia cancer stem cells from human patients implanted in mice. “Interestingly, we also found that vitamin C treatment had an effect on leukemic stem cells that resembled damage to their DNA,” says first study author Luisa Cimmino, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology at NYU Langone Health. “For this reason, we decided to combine vitamin C with a PARP inhibitor, a drug type known to cause cancer cell death by blocking the repair of DNA damage, and already approved for treating certain patients with ovarian cancer.” Researchers found that the combination had an enhanced effect on leukemia stem cells, further shifting them from self-renewal back toward maturity and cell death. The results also suggest that vitamin C might drive leukemic stem cells without TET2 mutations toward death, says Cimmino, given that it turns up any TET2 activity normally in place. “Our team is working to systematically identify genetic changes that contribute to risk for leukemia in significant groups of patients,” says corresponding author Iannis Aifantis, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Pathology at NYU Langone Health. “This study adds the targeting of abnormal TET2-driven DNA demethylation to our list of potential new treatment approaches.” Burnt out? Rhodiola rosea supplements may help, says new study Wein University Medical School (Austria), 18-Aug-2022 Daily supplements containing Rhodiola rosea extract may improve the symptoms of burnout, suggests data from the first trial to examine the effects of the botanical extract on this modern day condition. Results of the open-label, multicenter, single-arm trial provide “an encouraging basis” for future clinical trials to study if R. rosea extract can indeed help people suffering from burnout, which is reported to be an increasing burden to people and economies in the Western world. “Most of the outcome variables assessed in this trial demonstrated relevant improvement over time with considerable changes already being detectable after the first week of R. rosea administration,” wrote Siegfried Kasper from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria and Angelika Dienel from Dr Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co. in Germany in Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment . Despite being the first to specifically examine the effects of R. rosea in burnout, the results are in-line with previously reported benefits of the root extract, which is primary used for stress, mental and physical fatigue, depression, and to boost energy. Study details For the new study, Kasper and Dienel recruited 118 men and women aged between 30 and 60 suffering from symptoms of burnout. The participants were asked to consume 400 mg per day of a R. rosea extract (WS 1375, Rosalin, which is the active ingredient in Dr Willmar Schwabe's Vitango product) for 12 weeks. The majority of symptoms improved during the course of the study, with some improvements measurable as early as the first week, said the researchers. Specifically, improvements in symptoms such as “emotional exhaustion”, “fatigue”, “exhaustion”, “lack of joy”, “loss of zest for life”, and “depersonalization” were all recorded during the study. In addition, the participants reported increased sexual interest and functioning, which supports the potential activity of R. rosea to ameliorate burnout's impairment on sexual function. Resveratrol supplementation improves arterial stiffness in type 2 diabetics Toho University (Japan), August 18 2022. A randomized, double-blind study reported in the International Heart journal found improvements in arterial stiffness and oxidative stress among type 2 diabetics who were supplemented with resveratrol. The trial included 50 diabetic men and women who received 100 milligrams resveratrol or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI, a novel diagnostic measure of arterial stiffness that is a marker of atherosclerosis) and blood pressure were assessed at the beginning and end of the study, in addition to blood assessments of oxidative stress and other factors. At the end of the study, subjects who received resveratrol had significantly lower blood pressure, less oxidative stress and decreased arterial stiffness in comparison with values obtained at the beginning of the study. Participants who received a placebo experienced no significant changes in these areas. “The primary finding in the present study was that oral supplementation of resveratrol for 12 weeks decreased CAVI in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus,” authors Haruki Imamura, MD, and colleagues at Toho University Sakura Medical Center in Japan write. “Many previous studies have demonstrated increased CAVI in atherosclerotic diseases such as acute coronary syndrome and stroke, and these reports indicate that CAVI reflects organic atherosclerosis.” They suggest that a reduction in oxidative stress may be one mechanism involved in the improvement in arterial stiffness observed in this study among participants who received resveratrol. Improved endothelial function via increased nitric oxide production may be another mechanism. “Resveratrol may be beneficial in preventing the development of atherosclerosis induced by diabetes,” the authors conclude. “However, a large-scale cohort study is required to validate the present findings.” Research reveals how physical exercise protects the heart Through experiments with rats and cells, a study shows that aerobic training reactivates system that helps rid heart cells of dysfunctional mitochondria. University of São Paulo (Brazil), August 18, 2022 Regular exercise is considered an important form of treatment for heart failure, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. The benefits of exercise range from prevention of cachexia -severe loss of weight and muscle mass- and control of arterial blood pressure to improved cardiac function, postponing a degenerative process that causes progressive heart cell death. About 70% of heart failure patients die from the condition within five years. A study by the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, published recently in the journal Autophagy, helps to elucidate part of the mechanism whereby aerobic exercise protects the sick heart. “Basically, we discovered that aerobic training facilitates the removal of dysfunctional mitochondria from heart cells,” said Julio Cesar Batista Ferreira, a professor at the Biomedical Science Institute (ICB-USP) and principal investigator for the project which was supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) Mitochondria are the organelles in charge of providing energy to cells. “The removal of dysfunctional mitochondria increases the supply of ATP [adenosine triphosphate, the molecule that stores energy for the cell] and reduces the production of toxic molecules, such as oxygen free radicals and reactive aldehydes, an excess of which damages the cell structure,” he added. In a previous study, published in PLOS ONE, the group showed through experiments with rats that aerobic training reactivates the proteasome, an intracellular complex responsible for cleansing cells of damaged proteins. The results also showed that proteasome activity in the heart of a patient with heart failure decreases by more than 50% and that, as a result, highly reactive proteins build up in the cytoplasm, where they interact with other structures and cause heart cell death. Dietary management of OCD: Study links metabolism and vitamin D status to disease severity Ordu University (Turkey), August 20, 2022 One carbon metabolism that includes vitamin B12 and homocysteine, plus vitamin D deficiency could all play a role in the onset of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), research suggests. The study, published in Psychiatry Research, investigated whether vitamin B12, homocysteine folic acid and vitamin D play a role in the cause (aetiology) of childhood OCD. Led by Erman Esnafoğlu from Ordu University, Turkey, the team noted that one carbon metabolism – which includes vitamin B12 and homocysteine – has been investigated in many psychiatric disorders, while vitamin D has also been considered to contribute in a variety of psychiatric disorders in recent years. “To the best of our knowledge the role of one carbon mechanism and vitamin D deficiency in children and adolescents with OCD has not yet been investigated,” wrote the Turkish team. “For this reason we aimed to investigate serum vitamin B12, folic acid homocysteine and vitamin D levels in children and adolescents in this study.” Esnafoğlu and colleagues reported that lower levels of vitamin B12 and higher levels of homocysteine in were found in OCD patients – suggesting that one carbon metabolism plays a role in the onset of the condition. Furthermore, the team found that low vitamin D levels were linked to OCD, and that vitamin D status in patients had a negative correlation with disease severity. “This study has demonstrated that there is a significant decrease in vitamin B12 and vitamin D and a significant increase in homocysteine in children and adolescents with OCD,” said the team – noting that vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for development of OCD. “The findings of this study demonstrated that vitamin B12 and vitamin D levels were significantly lower in patients compared to healthy controls, whereas homocysteine was higher in the patient group,” noted Esnafoğlu and colleagues.
