In this concluding section of the Gate of Repentance (Shaar HaTeshuvah), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that even unintentional mistakes require reflection and repair. Whether a person accidentally desecrates Shabbos by forgetting the day or commits another transgression without malicious intent, Judaism teaches that every action carries accountability. The Orchot Tzaddikim recommends that a person establish personal consequences—such as fasting, giving charity, or voluntarily giving up a physical pleasure—to reinforce awareness and prevent future mistakes. These self-imposed acts are not punishments, but tools for spiritual growth and greater mindfulness.Rabbi Wolbe broadens this idea beyond major sins to include the subtle habits that quietly weaken our relationship with Hashem. Idle conversation, jealousy, hatred, enjoying another person's downfall, speaking lashon hara, reciting blessings without concentration, and praying absentmindedly all deserve sincere introspection. Every individual should regularly examine their own behavior, honestly acknowledge where improvement is needed, and approach Hashem with a humble, broken heart. Matilda Ho was banned from the kitchen for the first 25 years of her life. Her mother's rule was simple: cooking is what you do when you fail at school. She now runs China's first food tech venture fund.I'm joined by Matilda Ho, Founder and Managing Director of Bits x Bites — a $100 million fund vintaged in October 2020, 15 companies backed, Series A and B, and a board seat as a condition of every check. Her LPs are sovereign funds from Singapore, the Middle East and China, agrifood strategics, and family offices.Her argument is that the food system cannot be fixed at the checkout. She spent five years at BCG and IDEO advising food companies, and one project — working out how likely a Chinese meat processor was to have another scandal — turned up roughly half a million food safety incidents a year. She built an online grocery to fix it one shopper at a time, then concluded that would take longer than her lifetime. The leverage was upstream.What she found upstream is a manufacturing advantage most investors outside China have not priced. Seventy percent of the world's vitamins, two-thirds of its amino acids and more than 80% of its stevia are already made there — much of it in brownfield plants with fermentation tanks sitting idle. Where European biotech founders cannot fund scale-up, she can buy it cheap.She is equally blunt about what does not work. Beyond Burger's peas travel from Canada to Suzhou to California, and the margin never survives the trip. China already has tofu — clean, plant-based and 2,000 years old. So she funds certainty over moonshots: functional ingredients, animal health, matcha. Local governments run fund-of-fund structures and back specialized GPs rather than investing directly. Her own first exit was selling a stake to a provincial government vehicle at Series B, in year five of the fund.In China, DPI matters more than IRR. IRR can be manipulated; cash returned to LPs cannot. Most domestic funds have only a five-year life, which forces short-term decisions. Her USD fund has ten to twelve years.Back wartime CEOs, not peacetime ones. Growing revenue tenfold when money was free is not a replicable track record. She looks for humility, grit, and founders who keep going when 99% of the signals say stop.Software alone does not work in agriculture. Farmers will not pay for something invisible. Her Beijing crop-model company had to bundle seeds and inputs with the software; two-thirds of its revenue now comes from selling the inputs.Drones changed the economics for smallholders. A tenth of the chemical input, up to half the water saved, and profits up around 30% on cash crops — plus a whole new job class of drone operators. Most growth is now outside China, in North America, Brazil and Argentina.Agrifood is under-invested. It accounts for less than 5% of total venture funding. There's no shortage of news about institutions launching tokenized money market funds (MMF): Blackrock, JPMorgan, State Street, BNY, the list goes on.We hear less about adoption. Assets have grown from near zero to $15B, which sounds impressive until you compare it to over $7T sitting in US MMFs today.The chart below shows the efficiency gains tokenization unlocks, but how many participants are feeling the pain of the current T+2, multi-step process acutely enough to move? That question points directly to where the tipping point for adoption will come from.Treasurers feel that pain. So if I swipe my card at a Starbucks, Visa can help authenticate and move funds between my bank account and Starbucks' bank account. So there's complexity in virtue of how the technology works, but at the end of the day, it's just a more efficient way to help share value between two counterparties.”Tanner distances his application from the volatile (and often dodgy) world of cryptocurrencies. But Treasurers still need to understand the technology, but you need to present it the right way.Leading with the right narrative:“Treasurers, finance teams, CFOs rightly so, are some of the most conservative people out there. Because the number one golden rule in the corporate treasury handbook is do not lose the company's money. And a lot of the finance teams don't buy on innovation, they buy to de-risk something. So you have to really lead with a narrative of security, and trust and compliance and all those things.”The Theseus Ship of financial infrastructureThe global financial system is going to slowly, almost like Theseus's ship, just be replaced, by some of this blockchain, and Stable coin infrastructure. One of the most striking characteristics of St. Isaac's writings is that he never asks us to renounce the world because the world is evil. Rather, he continually places before us something infinitely more beautiful. He speaks so often of the sweetness of communion with God, the boldness of prayer, the radiance of divine light, and the immeasurable mercy of Christ that worldly pleasures gradually lose their attraction by comparison. For Isaac, the spiritual life is not sustained by fear but by love. Yet because he knows the human heart so well, he also warns us with remarkable honesty. The heart is changeable. We imagine ourselves steadfast, yet we are easily drawn away. A single hour of distraction can cool the warmth of prayer. Idle conversation, endless amusement, frivolity, curiosity, and the restless pursuit of novelty slowly scatter the attention that had been gathered before God. This is why the anonymous elder can say that when he lives in stillness, his hunger diminishes, his prayer becomes bold, and his soul delights in the divine light. But after only a brief conversation, he immediately notices the change. His appetite increases, his rule weakens, and the clarity of prayer fades. Isaac is not describing a rule. He is describing a law of the heart. Whatever fills the mind eventually governs the heart. Our own age makes his words even more urgent. We no longer need companions to distract us. We carry distraction in our pockets. We wake to it and fall asleep with it. News, entertainment, endless commentary, social media, notifications, and perpetual noise have become so ordinary that many no longer recognize how profoundly they shape the soul. We often wonder why prayer feels difficult while rarely questioning the thousands of impressions that fill our imagination throughout the day. The demons need not persuade us to abandon Christ outright. They need only keep us endlessly occupied. This is why Isaac joins stillness to humility. The deepest obstacle to prayer is not simply noise but pride. Pride always seeks stimulation because it continually seeks itself. Humility, however, is content to disappear. It has no need to be seen, entertained, admired, or constantly occupied. The humble heart finds its rest in God alone. For this reason Isaac's final exhortation is so beautiful. He does not tell us merely to become more disciplined. He tells us to imitate the humility of Christ. Christ Himself entered silence, accepted obscurity, embraced poverty, endured misunderstanding, and descended into the deepest humiliation out of love for the Father and for us. Only that same humility can preserve the fire of divine love within us.   The Christian life is therefore not primarily about giving things up. It is about guarding a flame. Every choice either shelters that flame or exposes it to the winds of distraction. Every act of recollection gathers the heart toward God; every needless dissipation scatters it again.   Isaac continually returns us to this single question: What helps the heart remain before God?   Everything that deepens humility, stillness, repentance, and love should be embraced. Everything that leaves the heart agitated, distracted, self-absorbed, or spiritually numb should be gently but resolutely laid aside.   In the end, the goal is wonderfully simple. To become so captivated by the beauty of Christ that nothing in this passing world seems worth exchanging for His presence.   The one thing necessary is not found by striving after extraordinary experiences, but by quietly protecting the heart in which Christ has chosen to dwell.   ---   Text of chat during the group:    00:01:35 Fr. Yes!  You are in!  Thank you for joining and when worthy, thank you very much for sharing.  Extra thanks for Two Tall for that opening hook.  Extra thanks to ThursDudesPM for bringing it last week.  As for this round, why do you work?  Why are we designed to work and contribute?  Here's your mic drop, your hammer coming from a letter written to Thesselonica...We talked about the importance of the Living Word last week.  You read it and it reads you.  This hit me like hammer this week.  Side note, not my first time reading it.  I've ready it countless times.  Yet that's the Living Word, it can impact you differently at different times in your life.  Hence, it's Living.  A reading from 2 Thes 3...Have you ever noticed that depression and idleness are closely related?How about addiction and idleness?Col 3:23I always feel good after a hard day's work, work out...ministry outreach.  It feels good and overflows the heart to serve.  To be of value to others.  To be careful, we are not to be workaholics either.  Some of us are bad at that too.  Resting.  We are commanded to Sabbath for balance.Have you seen a divide in the USA?  Do we encourage idleness?  Do we give people what they want for our power and votes?  Do we encourage their addiction?  Last week's reading warned us about helping people stumble.  Think about that.On the flip side, I serve the homeless.  Jesus encourages us to serve the poor, Matt 25:40.  To take care of orphans and widows.  Yet I don't shower and clothe my neighbors on the streets to keep them there.  I don't give them pipes nor syringes.  I serve to give them Hope.  To get them off the streets and into a life of Purpose.  2 Thes 3 is really one of the mic drops for that.  An idle society is a miserable society.  For those in the States, you enjoy the fruits of that country by those who worked their butts off and sacrificed.  If you think I'm trying to play a particular political angle, I also witness immigrants here in the Coachella Valley working their butts off in the hottest of days.  Their work ethic blows me away.  Did you know that retirement is not in the Bible?  A warning about being a glutton is.  God did not just put you on earth to golf, eat and drink.  If by chance you are able to retire, good job on your hard work and stewardship.  Now you have more time to serve the Lord, his Kingdom and your neighbors.  Clearly, I'm not retired.  If I could, I would still love and serve others.  Whether you are 20 or 70, this may be your wake up call.  The Idle Check Engine light may be on.Ending on a prayer note...

Today, Amy and Jag look at a financial risk that is easy to ignore because it does not feel urgent in the moment: the cost of doing nothing. In this episode, we focus on how delays in financial decisions can quietly create long term consequences, especially for healthcare professionals who are used to acting quickly at work but may postpone choices in their own financial lives. The central idea is simple. Inaction is still a decision, and over time it can carry a real cost. Amy explains that many financial delays do not come with immediate pain. Income is still coming in, accounts still exist, and nothing appears broken. That makes it easy to leave cash uninvested, skip HSA contributions, ignore open enrollment changes, or delay insurance decisions. But time is often the thing being lost, and time can translate into large amounts of money. A $100,000 cash balance left sitting too long can mean missing tens of thousands of dollars in growth. Missed HSA contributions can reduce both tax savings and long term wealth. Idle cash spread across accounts may not seem serious until the total missed opportunity becomes clear. The episode also highlights timing windows that matter. Open enrollment, tax planning before year end, lower income years that create Roth conversion opportunities, and insurance decisions made while health is still favorable can all have meaningful financial impact. Amy gives several examples where waiting leads to higher taxes, less retirement savings, or insurance that becomes more expensive or unavailable. She also notes that rule changes can remove options people assumed would still be there later. A major theme in the conversation is that the biggest mistakes are often basic ones that never get revisited. People repeat the same benefits elections, forget to update beneficiaries, let cash build up unintentionally, and miss planning opportunities because nothing forces action. Amy stresses that beneficiary designations override a will, which makes that one of the fastest and most important items to review. She also emphasizes income protection through insurance and the importance of identifying unintentional cash balances. The practical advice is to start small and focus on what matters most. Review beneficiaries. Check insurance coverage. Look for idle cash. Make a short list of what has a deadline, what affects family, and what becomes more expensive if delayed. Amy suggests one or two intentional financial reviews each year, along with a pre year end tax check and regular check ins on the biggest issues. The message is not to do everything at once. It is to notice what has been sitting too long and move it forward. Doing nothing feels neutral, but it is often where the biggest hidden costs begin.
