As global supply chains fracture, AI reshapes productivity, and technology becomes a core instrument of national power, India is making an ambitious push to redefine its role in the world economy from IT services provider to deep tech superpower. In the season 2 premiere of TechSurge, host Sriram Viswanathan brings together three defining perspectives to examine how India is positioned to become a global leader in frontier technologies, and what must go right for that vision to succeed. The episode begins with S. Krishnan, Secretary at India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, who outlines how India is treating deep tech as national infrastructure. From the India Semiconductor Mission and AI compute investments to the new RDI (Research, Development & Innovation) framework, Krishnan explains how long-horizon industrial policy is being used to derisk private capital, strengthen domestic design and manufacturing, and accelerate commercialization.Next, former G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant places India's technology ambitions in a global context. As post-WWII institutions weaken and supply chains are redrawn, Amitabh argues that India's decade of structural reforms, digital public infrastructure, and global partnerships has created a historic opening, if India can sustain free enterprise, execution discipline, and state-level reform. Finally, T.K. Kurien, CEO and Managing Partner of Premji Inves, brings the investor and operator lens. Kurien explores why India has excelled at services and business-model innovation but lagged in core technology creation and what it will take to build globally dominant deep tech companies. From patient capital and university-led innovation to focused national bets in AI applications, biotech, and semiconductors, he outlines the path from ambition to execution.Across policy, geopolitics, and capital, one message is clear: India's deep tech future will not be decided by vision alone but by alignment between government direction, private risk-taking, and long-term discipline. If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform.Sign up for our newsletter at techsurgepodcast.com for updates on upcoming TechSurge Live Summits and future Season 2 episodes.Episode LinksIndia Semiconductor Mission (MeitY): https://www.meity.gov.in/India AI Mission & AI Kosh: https://indiaai.gov.in/National Research Foundation & RDI Scheme: https://anrf.gov.in/Premji Invest: https://www.premjiinvest.com/Timestamps00:00 India's Deep Tech Inflection Point02:05 Industrial Policy as National Infrastructure06:52 Why Government Must Catalyze Product Innovation Beyond IT Services09:13 Building the Ecosystem: Talent, Research, Diaspora Return & Startup Scale13:10 India Semiconductor Mission (ISM): What's Different This Time24:56 ISM 2.0 Plans: Fixing Design Incentives & Unlocking Risk Capital27:15 IndiaAI Mission Explained: Compute, Data (AI Kosh) & Model Development33:09 Global Order Shifts: Supply Chains, Tech Power & Introducing Amitabh Kant41:19 Alliances That Matter: China, Europe/Japan Partnerships & Why the US Is Key54:11 How Government Can Take Risk: Fund-of-Funds, R&D Incentives, and Grand Challenges57:07 Dismantle Red Tape, Build World-Class Infrastructure, 01:00:57 Why Premji Invest Focused on Growth Stage (and What Changed for Early Stage)01:03:16 India vs US Investing: Where Returns Come From and Avoiding Valuation Hype01:05:28 Building India's Startup Ecosystem: Capital, Patience, and Core Tech vs Business Models01:13:41 Three Sectors to Bet On: AI Software/Agents, Biotech Breakthroughs, and Pragmatic Semiconductors

Show Notes In this conversation, Simon and Amitabh discuss the current state of the world characterized by a polycrisis, primarily driven by neoliberalism. They explore the implications of this crisis on civil society, the role of the left, and the importance of grassroots movements. The dialogue emphasizes the need for emotional engagement in advocacy and the potential for change through collective action and solidarity. Key Reflections We are facing a polycrisis that is a manifestation of neoliberalism. The current crisis is the biggest since World War II. Neoliberalism has shed its humane pretenses. The left has become too centrist and lacks radicalism. Grassroots movements are essential for systemic change. Civil society must focus on holding power accountable. Emotional engagement is crucial in advocacy work. Generational divides exist but are not the only factor in activism. International aid needs to be reimagined for effective collaboration. There is a growing quest for freedom and justice worldwide. Keywords polycrisis, neoliberalism, left politics, civil society, grassroots movements, international aid, activism, generational perspectives, emotional engagement, human dignity Brief Bio Amitabh Behar, Executive Director of Oxfam International, is a global civil society leader with decades of experience in human rights, economic inequalities, governance, and social justice. Previously CEO of Oxfam India, he has held leadership roles in CIVICUS, Navsarjan, and Yuva. He serves on several global boards, including the Global Fund for Community Foundation and the Norwegian Human Rights Fund. Before Oxfam, he was Executive Director of the National Foundation for India and co-chaired the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, a network of over 11,000 civil society organizations. His work focuses on democracy, philanthropy, and citizen participation.

What about the movie poster Sir? One of the biggest challenges for today's students is fighting the flurry of unending distractions. Given how fickle our minds are, to rein in this ‘drunken mad monkey' (Swami would refer to the mind in this manner) is no mean task for anyone, let alone the impressionable youngsters. While studying in Bhagawan's school in Prasanthi Nilayam in the 90s, Amitabh Das Gupta went through an episode when he became a victim of the tricks of the monkey mind. But the merciful Lord alerted him and eventually emboldened him with His guidance and grace to deal with such antics of the mind, and learn to rise higher and become nobler. He shares those OMS moments with us today in this episode.

The U.S. agricultural sector is facing a challenging transition. Following a period of record profitability in 2021 and 2022, the latest USDA 2024 Farm Sector Income Forecast released in September of 2024, projects a continuing decline in farm income. According to Amitabh Bhargava, a seasoned expert in credit risk and portfolio risk management, farm incomes dropped nearly 29% in 2023 and are expected to fall another 9-10% in 2024. This decline represents a slowing of the income reduction but signals continued financial stress for farmers across the nation. Ransomware may not be on your machines due to your negligence or mistakes. It could be there because of third-party software you are utilizing. Do you know what to do if this happens to you? Today's guest is Amitabh Sinha. Amitabh has a PhD in Computer Science and more than 20 years of experience in enterprise software, end-user computing, mobile, and database software. He co-founded Workspot in 2012. He was the General Manager of Enterprise Desktop and Applications at Citrix Systems. In his five years at Citrix, he was the VP of Product Management for XenDesktop and VP of Engineering for the Advanced Solutions Group. Show Notes: [1:03] - Amitabh shares his background and current role and contributions at Workspot. [4:35] - The first sign of ransomware in an organization is widespread blue screens and Microsoft machines shutting down. [5:40] - How does ransomware find its way to a device? [6:59] - Ransomware in your organization is not necessarily your fault. [10:37] - Amitabh describes how he has helped client organizations back up and running after having been infected with ransomware. [13:11] - Typically, it is not recommended to pay the ransomware, but it may be a viable option for some organizations. [15:59] - Most small companies are not prepared to prevent or handle ransomware. [17:34] - In most large companies, not all PCs are up to date on security patches. [20:41] - Cloud storage is much safer and can be accessed on other physical machines in the event that ransomware shuts down an organization. [24:41] - For those who work from home, sometimes multiple machines makes things even more complicated. [27:35] - What are you willing to pay to not have something happen? That's how ransomware takes advantage of people. [31:20] - For small companies, there is typically an architectural solution, but that isn't always viable for large organizations. [33:14] - Consider the critical functions of your organizations and what a plan could be if computers were not accessible. [34:37] - These types of attacks are more and more frequent. [36:44] - Amitabh is confident that AI will make preventing ransomware even more challenging. [40:38] - Most people have accepted that a lot, if not all, their information has already been leaked on the internet. But businesses are particularly vulnerable. [42:30] - A whole organization can be drastically impacted by just one machine being hit by ransomware. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
It's not about being risk averse, it's about being regret averse. There's a pretty well known story about Jeff Bezos, the guy who started Amazon. The story goes like this: Jeff Bezos quit his nice hedge-fund job to start Amazon. He did this big leap of faith because he imagined he was 80 and he wanted to be an 80 year old who had as few regrets as possible. Back in 2021, Utkarsh Amitabh wrote about career transitions in the framework of the regret minimization formula for the Harvard Business Review, he talks about how Bezos' boss walked around New York's Central Park to talk about why Bezos wanted to quit. His boss gave him two days to decide to quit. Bezos theorized that even if he failed, he would regret not trying, because when you ignore your dreams you become a curmudgeon yelling at kids and dogs to stay off your lawn. Amitabh writes, “Transitions aren't just about doing something different. A career transition is a lifestyle redesign that often entails rethinking how you want to feel at the end of the day, how you want to spend your time, and how this relates to your longer term goals. When you feel this need for change, it isn't necessarily related to a fancier title or more money, but your inner voice whispering that you could do more, be more, experience and achieve more.” Morgan Housel writes, “David Cassidy's last words were, “So much wasted time.” What a terrible thing to realize when it's too late. And I wonder if it'll become more common as many of us spend our days aimlessly scrolling our phones. Regrets are a dangerous liability because their final costs are often hidden for years or decades. And decisions that are easiest in the short run are often the most costly in the long run." For Hausel and for Bezos it isn't necessarily about risk; it's about making sure that they aren't going to be old and full of regrets.
