He's worked on treating HIV and tuberculosis in places such as Zimbabwe, South Sudan, Ecuador and Alberta.Catherine Hankins was the chief scientific adviser for the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS in Geneva, Switzerland. And in 2013, she was named to the Order of Canada and in 2023 was inducted in the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. She is currently an adjunct professor at the School of Population and Global Health at McGill University and a senior fellow at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development.

374 Water CEO Chris Gannon joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss the company's latest business milestones and the growing market impact of its groundbreaking AirSCWO™ (Air-Supercritical Water Oxidation) technology. As environmental regulations tighten and the urgency to address toxic “forever chemicals” like PFAS intensifies, 374Water is emerging as a leader in advanced waste destruction solutions that eliminate hazardous organic contaminants completely. “Our technology eradicates it completely, so it doesn't exist anymore,” Gannon told Proactive, referring to AirSCWO's unmatched ability to destroy complex contaminants such as long-chain PFAS compounds, which have proven resistant to conventional treatment methods. These persistent chemicals, commonly found in industrial waste and firefighting foams, are linked to serious health and environmental issues, making effective disposal solutions a global priority. Gannon announced that 374Water has secured a contract with the State of North Carolina to process Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) — a PFAS-laden firefighting material that is being phased out nationwide. This agreement marks a significant validation of the company's proprietary technology and highlights the increasing demand for scalable, reliable destruction methods as regulators crack down on hazardous waste. In addition to the North Carolina contract, Gannon revealed a strategic partnership with a RCRA-permitted TSDF (Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility) operator to establish the company's first dedicated waste destruction site. This facility will serve as a critical hub for demonstrating AirSCWO's industrial-scale capabilities and will help accelerate adoption across broader markets. Gannon emphasized that AirSCWO technology is technology-agnostic and modular, making it highly adaptable across a wide range of waste streams — from sludge and biosolids to concentrated industrial liquids. Current deployments are already underway in states like Florida and California, where 374Water is working with local governments and utilities to address critical wastewater treatment challenges. The company's momentum comes at a pivotal time, as governments around the world impose stricter limits on PFAS and other emerging contaminants. Rivers is an organizer not a fraternizer. In his many years of running for public office, he has not taken money from lobbyists, or any special interest groups. He considers himself to be a representative of the people, not a politician. He not only stands for the people but with the people. Rivers wants to increase the state budget by 12.5% over the next three years. This will be accomplished through increasing more import and export commerce thus creating more jobs. Rivers plans to improve Washington State's desperate need for a better mental health system. The state and the health system need to work together to structure a mental health system that deals with preventive treatment as well as diagnostic and continuous treatment. It should be structured for everyone, not just those who are chronically mentally ill. Rivers wholeheartedly support a woman's right to freedom of choice. No person, politician or government has the right to make that choice for a woman about what she can and cannot do with her body. Men have the freedom of choice and so should women. Rivers knows that homelessness is one of the biggest crisis facing our state and nation. He wants to develop programs that will not only help to reduce the problem but treat the underlying causes such as runaways stemming from child trafficking and abuse, inflated mortgage rates, and unemployment as well as mental illness. Don L. Rivers plans to go across the state to all 39 counties to speak with the communities. This is to explore avenues and options which can uplift each county. Today's episode is about a topic that I am truly passionate about - the introduction of social media and smartphones into all aspects of our lives - and what impact this is having on us individually, collectively and, perhaps most urgently, what impact is this having on our children. Jonathan Haidt is arguably one of the worlds' most eminent psychologists. He is a Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University's Stern School of Business and the author of 4 best-selling books, including his latest The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. In this episode, Jonathan and I explore how the fundamental differences between online and real-world interactions are affecting young people's social, emotional and cognitive development. We discuss why girls face unique risks on social media, from damaged relationships and reputations to harassment, and how gaming and pornography are shaping boys' expectations of relationships. Jonathan also shares some eye-opening data about the link between a decline in teen mental health and the widespread adoption of smartphones and social media. He emphasises the need for collective action to create healthier norms around technology use, both at home and in schools. We dive into practical strategies for parents, including setting clear boundaries and prioritising hobbies and family time. Our conversation also touches on the challenges of navigating technology use in a world where the pace of change has been so fast. Jonathan remains optimistic that we're nearing a tipping point and outlines four key norms we can all adopt with our children—even if they're already dependent on their phones throughout the day. We also discuss in detail what we believe schools could be doing to help their students have less screen time and the importance of collaborating with other families to support healthier habits. As a parent and a doctor, I'm deeply concerned about the mental health crisis facing our children and young people. But if, as a society, we can come together to raise awareness and take purposeful action, we can create a healthier future for the next generation. I think this is one of the most important conversations that I have ever had on my podcast.
