Witness the incredible true story of Joseph F. Smith, a Mormon teenager who showed incredible courage when faced with a gang of armed men in the Wild West. This story of bravery and calm in the face of death will inspire you.Joseph F. Smith, LDS history, and teenage bravery come together in this true story of quiet courage. At 19, while crossing Southern California during a time of anti-Mormon violence, Joseph faced a gang of armed men. While others ran, he didn't flinch. “Yes, siree. Dyed in the wool. True blue, through and through.” That one line said it all. But this moment was just the tip of a life forged by hardship—an orphan at 13, a missionary at 15, tested in the Sandwich Islands, and transformed by grit and faith.

Biographical films can be incredible ... that is if they delve deep into the main protagonist's character based on their past. Their influences growing up drive who they are and why they became the important figure, we are watching being analyzed on screen. In 1970, there was a larger-than-life war hero, who for better or worse was a strong force for the American effort in defeating the Nazis in WWII. However, George S. Patton ruffled more than a few feathers during the last few years of the war. Franklin J. Schaffner directed this Best Picture winner, Patton, illustrating this macho, no-holds-barred general who helped win a war, but made many enemies on BOTH sides of the battlefield. George C. Scott's legendary performance is what people remember about this Oscar-winning film. However, there is a lot more that can be analyzed about this classic. After 55 years, does this film still hold up? Does it still deserve the same praise it received when it was first released? Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about Patton, as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1970.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSkyShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.com or jackferdman@gmail.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating. This season we're doing something a little different. This season will consist of mostly shorter episodes with inspiration drawn from the Biographical Dictionary of Evangelicals by Mark Noll and published by Intervarsity Press. BDE features brief biographies, ordered chronologically, of over 400 evangelicals from John Wycliff to the modern day spread across 816 pages. My plan for each episode is to use a random number generator to select a page and then deliver a brief biography of whomever was randomly selected. This is something of an experiment and we'll have to see how it goes.

Craig Yoe's biographical interview highlights his creative journey through personal struggles and reinvention, who transforms adversity into creativity while remaining true to his innovative spirit. He discusses his graphic novel Woman & Man+, a psychedelic reflection on leaving the U.S., a painful divorce, and using art therapy to rebuild his life. Raised in the Midwest, Yoe credits his parents for encouraging his creativity, with influences like Carl Barks, Marvel Comics, Steve Ditko, and Robert Crumb. In the 1970s, he embraced the Jesus People movement, blending communal living, spiritual exploration, and work on Christian newspapers with artists like Rick Griffin. He oversaw David C. Cooke Bible and Life Pix comics before moving into toy design with Sid Diamond Toy Company and Marvin Glass toymakers. Yoe later became Creative Director for Jim Henson's Muppets and founded Yoe Studio, building a decades-long career in design and storytelling. Sety in the Desert. Around 1300 BCE, King Sety led an expedition into the Red Sea hills. His purpose? Gold. The King brought soldiers and charioteers out to mine precious metals for his treasuries. The journey was difficult, traversing a dry and rocky landscape far from the comforts of home. Fortunately, Sety left detailed descriptions of the event; and art and artefacts from this era allow us to reconstruct the journey... Following Elon Musk's estranged daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson's accusations of unethical behavior on the part of Musk's authorized biographer, memoirist Kelly McMasters and biographer Iris Jamahl Dunkle join co-hosts V.V. Ganeshananthan and Whitney Terrell to talk about the ethics of biography. Dunkle, the author of Riding Like the Wind: The Life of Sanora Babb, talks about using archives to restore the history of Babb, the writer whose notes John Steinbeck used to research The Grapes of Wrath, and how women's lives are often wrongly or incompletely depicted. McMasters, a memoirist whose recent book The Leaving Season: A Memoir portrays many people close to her, talks about the impossibility of writing honestly about her life without including her children, the two people with whom she spends the most time. Dunkle and McMasters discuss Wilson's accusations against Walter Isaacson, whom she says did not directly contact her for comment for his recent book about her father, although much of his book refers to her life. The group also discusses recent revelations that Alice Munro failed to act when she learned that her second husband had abused her daughter, and how authorized biographies often omit full accounts of the truth. Dunkle and McMasters read from their work. "In my own two analyses, I had observed such transformations for me in a very impressive way. I started my own analysis after the traumatic death of my sister when I was 22 years old. At that time, I had a breakdown, and I suffered from severe depressive and psychosomatic symptoms and sleep disorders but also from terrible nightmares that haunted me almost every night. Fortunately, my two analyses did change my depressive and psychosomatic symptoms, but what was at least as important for me, subjectively, was the change in my dreams, including the manifest dream content. The nightmares became less frequent; I was hardly in the position of an observer anymore but actively involved in the dream event. I was less alone in the dream but accompanied by people close to me and was more often able to solve the problems and conflicts which arose in the dream. In addition, the dreams were no longer predominantly characterized by fear and death anxiety but a whole range of emotions emerged. Towards the end of my second analysis, I will never forget that I had the only dream of my life from which I woke up because I was laughing out loud." Episode Description: We begin with acknowledging the ambivalence that many analysts have towards research. It is seen as distant from the sharing of subjectivities that draw many to our field. Marianne honors the unique transference reliving and then remembering that is central to the analytic encounter and from that position suggests ways that it can be researched. She presents a patient whose manifest dreams were studied over the course of treatment along with his sleep laboratory data. She notes how the stability of the analyst's presence is essential but not sufficient to maximize therapeutic benefit. We discuss the role of theory, the controversy over approaching the veridical past and the seductions of simplified treatments. Marianne closes by sharing her deep respect for the unconscious and how psychoanalysts are living in "rich times of pluralism." SHOW NOTES: On this show…we're asking ourselves the question, is it really that bad? As we strive to gain a historical perspective on some of today's challenges. It's easy to jump on the negative train and pump up the steam engine with your own parroted two cents. But before you know it, the train and the topic have jumped tracks and you aren't even sure where you're going or what you're talking about. Before you join in the chant of “it's never been this bad”, take a deep dive into history to gain some insight and an alternative perspective. Looking back at history isn't just about old stories—it's about learning how we've tackled challenges before, seeing what worked, and using that wisdom to navigate today's ups and downs smarter. It's like having a treasure map of experiences that can guide us toward better decisions and brighter futures. So, let's dig in, learn from the past, and build a tomorrow we can be proud of together! I've said it before, I love reading historical fiction. Biographical fiction too but historical fiction gives you new characters living during historical events. I find myself saying…” Whoa, we've come a long way baby!” But I think that is so important because if you just read the news or talk around the water cooler, your outlook might be far different. Instead of adopting this narrative, push back and ask - Is this really the worst time in history for _____? Maybe you aren't sure. Do the research. Dig into the details. Come to the conclusion yourself. It's true, not all history is positive but it is relevant. Human beings have made mistakes throughout human history. We've failed, learned, grown, and evolved. The only way to make sure we don't repeat past mistakes is to learn from them. The only way to learn is to research. Take an active part in your narrative by doing the work. Paul Ratner presents Harvard professor's study identifies the worst year in human history found at Big Think Rachel Sharp gives us a reality check on the Daily Mail, Think 2020 was the most stressful year EVER? Think again..... historians say it was only the EIGHTH worst time to live through in US history Louis CK on Collin O'Brien 12 years ago, posted on Youtube - Everything is amazing & Nobody is happy Gregg Levoy suggests Zooming Out: The Power of Putting Things in Perspective found at Psychology Today History is crucial for putting today's challenges into perspective for several reasons: Understanding Patterns and Cycles: History shows that many challenges are cyclical. Economic recessions, social unrest, and political upheaval have occurred repeatedly throughout history. Recognizing these patterns helps us understand that current challenges are not unique and can provide insights into potential solutions. Learning from the Past: By studying how previous generations addressed their problems, we can identify strategies that worked and those that didn't. This can help inform current decision-making and policy development. Gaining Context: Historical context helps us see the broader picture. For example, technological advancements, medical breakthroughs, and social progress often emerge from periods of significant challenge. Understanding this can help us appreciate the potential for positive outcomes from today's struggles. Building Resilience: Knowing that humanity has faced and overcome significant challenges in the past can be reassuring. It fosters a sense of resilience and optimism that we can navigate current difficulties. Avoiding Repetition of Mistakes: History provides valuable lessons on the consequences of certain actions and decisions. By studying these, we can avoid repeating past mistakes and work towards more effective solutions. Appreciating Progress: Comparing the present to the past highlights the progress we've made. Advances in technology, healthcare, human rights, and living standards become more apparent, providing a balanced view that acknowledges both current challenges and achievements. Inspiring Innovation: Historical examples of innovation and problem-solving can inspire new approaches and creative solutions to today's challenges. Fostering Empathy and Understanding: Learning about the struggles and triumphs of people from different times and places helps build empathy and a broader understanding of the human experience. By placing today's challenges within a historical framework, we gain a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of our current situation and can approach problems with a more informed and balanced perspective. CHALLENGE: Let's rewrite the narrative: While today's challenges seem daunting, history reveals that every era has faced its trials and triumphs. By embracing our past, we gain perspective on our progress and the resilience needed to shape a brighter future together. I Know YOU Can Do It!

When we think of oral cancer, we often picture a seasoned smoker or a long-time tobacco user. But did you know that a growing number of cases are affecting young, non-smokers? Over 20% of oral cancer diagnoses occur in people under 55, and the culprit might not be what you expect. The rise in instances is linked to Human papillomavirus (HPV) from unprotected oral sex, not tobacco. During Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we want to take some time to spotlight the extraordinary dentists and practitioners who have taken on this little-understood cancer and are survivors. Today's guest is Dr. Scott Edison, a Clinical Associate Professor at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. Before Scott found a lump on his neck in 2019, he didn't know all that much about head and neck cancer. Nothing makes you an expert in something more quickly than lived experience, and he set out to find out everything he could about the different types of treatment available to him.
