Volume 11 of one of Japan's greatest inventions, City Pop, is a tribute to Obon, a fusion of the ancient Japanese belief in ancestral spirits and a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. City Pop is a fusion of Western styled pop, rock, disco, funk, R&B, Adult Contemporary and yacht rock. This Japanese concoction had its heyday during the late 70s and early 80s, a time when Japan was riding high in its bubble economy. The music in this episode doesn't fully represent the Obon festivals, but in the spirit of City Pop, each of these songs can convey that wonderful August charm, which is when Obon is usually held in Japan.
