Ahoy! Frizz and Bob hop aboard the smoothest ship on the sea and pour two fittingly fancy drinks - Frizz with a whisky of the waves, Johnnie Walker Swing, and Bob with Kavalan's Concertmaster Port Cask Finish. Grab your captain's hat as we set sail into the breezy, deceptively deep world of yacht rock, with its velvety vocals, jazzy chords, and more emotional vulnerability than you'd expect from a genre famous for boat shoes and white linen pants. Don't let the smooth grooves fool you. Behind the luxury lies a rich history of studio perfectionism, unexpected cultural crossover, and musical roots that run straight through the heart of Black American traditions. We rave about the underrated bangers, the comedians who coined the term “yacht rock,” and how this silky soft-rock sound found a strong second wind in the 21st century.

Listen to the sounds of waves, the birds, sparse Beach Rd traffic, ferry and other nautical stuff from 11pm until dawn. The recording took place on a harbor beach, a few stone skips from the Black Dog Tavern (and you will find the perfect skipping stones down at the water's edge).Let the waves calm you. Let your stress go the way I'm trying to let it go after experiencing my first time time trying to use the insurance I paid extra for at the Dick's Sporting Goods for a bike. I remember all of those consumer times where I buy something, say no to the insurance and then get, “Well if you had bought the insurance we could help you.” But haha — This ************* time I bought the ****** insurance and have been on a three week experience of “Asurion needs more photos;” I take more photos of the bicycle and upload and wait three more business days for “Asurion needs you to fill out another form.” My first claim was denied because I wrote “Bike has flat tire.” NO, they don't cover tires, what I should've written was my bike has a “flat tube.” Few business days. New forms. Photos. I get that Asurion was named to paint a word picture in folks head of assurance. And I'm sure that got some ****** high-fives in the boardroom, "it's like insurance that's an assurance. Where's the mirror?"
Yacht rock is a subgenre of soft rock, popular from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, characterized by its smooth, sophisticated sound and often associated with a leisurely, upscale lifestyle. It draws inspiration from smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, and disco, featuring polished production, mellow vocals, and catchy, melodic compositions. The term "yacht rock" itself gained popularity with a 2005 online comedy series that humorously explored the music's connection to boating culture in Southern California. The music features memorable, often upbeat melodies and catchy hooks. While not always explicitly about boating, yacht rock lyrics often evoke themes of romance, leisure, and a carefree lifestyle. It blends elements of smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, and disco, creating a unique and recognizable sound. Michael McDonald: Known for his distinctive vocals and contributions to the Doobie Brothers and his solo work. Christopher Cross: Famous for hits like "Sailing" and "Ride Like the Wind". Hall & Oates: A popular duo known for their blend of pop, rock, and soul. Steely Dan: While not exclusively a yacht rock band, their later work shares many stylistic traits with the genre. Toto: Another band with strong ties to the yacht rock sound. Ambrosia: Known for hits like "Biggest Part of Me". Boz Scaggs: His album Silk Degrees is considered a foundational work. Rupert Holmes: Famous for "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)". In this podcast my great friend Bob Gretz and myself have fun talking about all of this music we we alive the first time it came around. Dale and Amy are back after a successful trip to Pocono over the weekend and are now enjoying the beach. After telling people last week about losing her phone, fans responded with places they've lost their phone. Dale and Amy took the girls to Pocono with them over the weekend and enjoyed a trip to Hersheypark. The weekend was capped off with a win for Dale as the crew chief for Connor Zilisch. Who created the phrase “Yacht Rock”?Dale had an urge for Fruit Rollups the other day, and that took them down memory lane, thinking about nostalgic snacks. Then, Dale and Amy discuss if brunch is overrated, if captions on TV are allowed, if avocados are good, are adults allowed to wear graphic t-shirts, and more.Plus, Ask Amy:How does it feel to be the wife of a winning crew chiefWhat was it like taking the girls to Victory LaneWhat was your first car, and was it the same car you took your driver's test inDo they still use their treehouseParenting tips for a toddler and newbornVisit High Rock Vodka dot com to find a bottle near you. Sure, they are the hosts of The Approach Shot, but John and Neal were both radio personalities first. On air DJ's that spun records. So whenever a big time music act appears on the show, they geek out a little. And what a guest this week! BURLEIGH DRUMMOND (yes the word "Drum" is in his name) the drummer and original founders of the band AMBROSIA ("How Much I Feel", "You're the Biggest Part of Me", "You're the Only Woman", "Holdin' On To Yesterday" takes us for a Magical Mystery Tour of the 50+ of years of AMBROSIA, but also talks about Alan Parsons, Bruce Hornsby, The Beatles and others that have been part of their half century of music. Burleigh also talks about how golf was a big part of his life when he was younger and how he was able to bond with his Dad over golf. **He also got John and Neal's jaw to drop when he shocked us with a story of one of his Dad's friends who used to drop by and teach him golf. It's NOT who you would guess. If you grew up listening to "soft rock" or "Yacht Rock", you're going to love this episode. Or to borrow the title from an Ambrosia song, this episode is Nice, Nice, Very Nice"!

Hello friends! Jock Bartley from legendary 70's band Firefall returns to the show for episode 1490! Firefall's latest album, Friends And Family 2 is out today on Sunset Blvd. Records. Just like the first Friends And Family, Friends And Family 2, finds the band paying tribute to those relationships, the heady days of the pre-Internet music business, and some of the most enduring tunes ever penned. Go to firefallofficial.com for music, tour dates, merch, and more. Jock and I have a great conversation about making Friends And Family 2 and getting guests like Wynnona Judd and Ritchie Furay (Buffalo Springfield) to play on the album, touring, new music, new members, the history of Firefall, Yacht Rock, and much more. Plötsligt kommer bandets andra keybordist, Steve Porcaro in i rummet.

Our guest today is Garret Price, who Mike speaks to about his HBO Series “Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary.” In addition to editing dozens of narrative and documentary series and films, Garret directed “Love, Antosha”. This is his second directorial effort for “Music Box”, the previous being, “Woodstock 99: Peace Love and Rage.” In “Yacht Rock”, Garret not only burnishes his archival and editorial chops, but digs in for simply charming interviews with the creators of this putative outgrowth of the 70s Southern California sound. This was a fun one folks! Garret was game for the sort of back and forth jousting that comes when you try to nail down just what comprises this retrospectively imagined subgenre of music. What are the odds that a coin flip and a pair of ping pong balls could change the future of an entire NBA franchise? In this electric episode of The Ben and Skin Show, your favorite crew—Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray—breaks down the unbelievable, improbable, and absolutely thrilling moment the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery with less than a 2% chance… and landed the generational talent, Cooper Flagg. The Mavs defy the odds—literally the same odds as rolling double sixes twice in a row—and win the lottery. The guys break down the surreal behind-the-scenes story from the lottery room, where even NBA execs couldn't believe what they were seeing. Why this 18-year-old phenom is being compared to Anthony Davis and LeBron James—and why trading him would be basketball blasphemy.Should the architect of this new era stay or go? The crew weighs the loyalty of stars like Kyrie and AD against the pressure to reset leadership. Who stays, who goes, and how do you balance two timelines—win now vs. build for the future?Plus, Yacht Rock trivia, summer shandies, and a Stars watch party at Rollertown Beerworks—because no one blends sports, beer, and absurdity like this crew.

The genre of 'yacht rock' may be an invented one, but there are still strict rules about what's considered 'yacht' or 'nyacht'
Find David's music here: https://www.creatchy.com/ As viewers of this show know I HATE the term "yacht rock", but I love the music of the 70s and 80s, and I FINALLY get to speak with one of the architects of this genre that I believe don't get the credit they're due. Get your popcorn ready for a very special mid day conversation with David Garfield of Karizma and SO MUCH more. We talk about David's musical journey, what it was like in the 80s when the 2nd wave of studio musicians were dominating the pop charts, and what he's doing now. It should be a fun.
